Yeah, it’s like, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones weren’t the first bands to exist either, but they did have the biggest influence on getting people to accept and take those genres of music seriously. Same thing with Band-Maid. I had heard of Babymetal before but it didn’t mean anything to me. I had heard of Japanese City Pop a year before before but that was pop music from the 80’s. Band-Maid not only opened my ears to music outside the West; Band-Maid is the reason I opened my ears again because I felt like rock was dead for over a decade. I found out about them last November and for the decade before that I thought all the music I loved was already written and there was nothing new for me to discover. They have unequivocally changed my view and reawakened my love of music.

Well said Wave Potter; a good way to describe BAND-MAID. They’re not the easiest band to breakdown for those who haven’t seen or heard them before.
They easily became my favorite band from Japan and there’s a lot to choose from. Of course, I owe BABYMETAL for discovering the Japanese metal/hard rock scene. BABYMETAL was my “gateway drug” to other Japanese bands and now I’m totally addicted to BAND-MAID and NEMOPHILLA! Keep doing what you’re doing, thanks.

One thing I've learned about Misa is that she has the type of personality where she let's her body of work do her talking for her.
Some people are just like that, and it's not uncommon in Japanese culture. They're also observers and deep thinkers. Misa is one of those people.

You are correct, and you accurately represent the significance of making a BAND-MAID documentary!
BAND-MAID is special to me, who is Japanese and has been listening to music in Japan for a long time.
From the point of view of the Japanese music scene, what they are doing is revolutionary.
Their stories and music are extraordinary.
That is one of the reasons why they are evaluated overseas more than in Japan.
I don't know about overseas listeners, but to be honest, Japanese listeners who listen to music like me and you are in the minority.
This can be easily understood by looking at the number of music reaction videos.
Believe it or not, most ordinary Japanese music listeners don't know about BAND-MAID.
Furthermore, even if you know BABYMETAL, it is not well known that their music is high level metal music.
This is going a little off topic, but I'm talking about ordinary Japanese people, but why does BAND-MAID not even have a name even though they don't know music in the same way? Why is BABYMETAL so well known? in history.
When BABYMETAL debuted, Japan was in its heyday for the biggest idol groups.
Because, as you know, BABYMETAL has appeared in the media as a group of idols singing metal.
There is a history of being introduced as a different idol group in a situation where idol groups are being featured in the media every day.
It's a pity, but it's because the media introduced Japan to the general public by emphasizing that part rather than the essential high-level musicality.
What is unusual about BAND-MAID is that, as a result, they have created their own music based on hard rock.
That's because, as you introduce, they stick to the initial concept and repeat trial and error.
It's not like we've been making music with a clear genre from the beginning, but we're making it with our personality and talent while evolving as a band.
As they sing "still unfinished", they don't walk on the path of the world view and genre that was completed from the beginning like other bands.
    That is also their charm.
    I thank you
And I'm also really grateful to the overseas BAND-MAID fans.
People from overseas, not Japanese people, are introducing great Japanese bands to Japanese people.
Perhaps this trend will someday change the way ordinary Japanese people listen to music.

BABYMETAL made a huge impact internationally by appearing at big festivals in Europe and touring with acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers & Lady Gaga. They also had huge festivals/concerts in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, etc. filling in huge arenas. The experience of seeing 3 young ladies fronting a metal band was just unique in the world of music and drew many people into this kawaii metal scene.
As far as musicality goes, the Kami Band that backed Su, Moa & Yui in concert are amazing players. The power of the rhythm section of Boh & Hideki Aoyama is overwhelming. Guitarists like the sadly deceased Mikio Fujioka, Takayoshi Ohmura, and Leda Cygnus have amazing technique and play very difficult passages with ease. In the studio, Dragonforce guitarists Herman Li & Sam Totman played a lot of the music. Kami Band is like if you had the Wrecking Crew backing the Beach Boys on their tours!
But the ace in the hole is Su-metal's amazing vocals. She was a prodigious singer even in her early teens. Producer Key Kobayashi knew immediately she had the strength to sing powerfully with metal backing when he was approached by Sakura Gakuin to form a new sub-unit in their show. Adding the ultra-kawaii dancers/backing vocalists Yui & Moa was just the icing on the vocal cake.
That is why BABYMETAL became the juggernaut it is. Having said that, I love BAND-MAID's music. They are an "organic" band and they don't have the backing of a huge idol management company like Amuse behind them. They work hard by touring and meeting the fans up close. Akane & Misa can stand toe-to-toe with Aoyama & Boh. Mincho is a superb lead guitarist and an amazing songwriter. Saiki & Mikju blend vocally very well with Saiki's lead vocals being well-rounded and strong. I love this band and hope to see them live someday.

Wave, you're doing a wonderful job documenting the Band-Maid story. And it's obvious that you're telling a story about a band that you think revived rock music - and I share that point of view. Of course there are pioneers that paved the way like Show Ya and of course there are other great bands that have an do revitalized rock music. However, I find it a bit unfortunate that there are always people who are offended when their favorite bands don't get the same attention. It’s your documentary, your effort and your homage to the style-defining and greatest band in decades. Music lover should appreciate the effort you put into your documentary. I would like to recommend to those who complain about your homage to B-M to get inspired by your passion and produce a homage in the form of a documentary for their favorite band as well, instead of complaining. That would be a win for everyone and we would have several other documentaries about many other great bands.

I really do not like people that are ALWAYS have to point out THEIR band... Babymetal was first, Lovebites is better, Band-Maid is the most creative etc. etc. I mean it is fine, but most of the time they do it to "downplay" another band or do not point out it is their opinion instead it is an fact (in their minds). I am an maidiac, but i still appreciate all the others japanese bands, there is no right or wrong, it is just what YOU prefer, your taste... Nothing else! I say the best rockband on the planet FOR ME is Band-Maid, there is nothing wrong about it, but still some people get angry or try to make a point why THEIR favorite band is better... Really? I dont care. It is my taste, nobody else is going to "convince" me that my taste is wrong. That is the problem i have with SOME fans of other japanese bands. All these bands getting along SO WELL, are in contact with each other and admire the work of the other bands. WHY is it SO HARD for some fans to follow into the footsteps of their favorite band and respect the other bands too. Thanks Wave again for your hard work and you cannot satisfy ALL people, even though i know you are trying and also always doing a great job at it (from my perspective). Greetings from Germany!

A printable transcript of what you said would be handy for fans (to create more fans). It's exactly why i love their music. They are way above the other bands. I said to someone on FB months ago that Saiki's voice separates them from the other female bands in Japan. She is a terrific singer - Puzzle acoustic is brilliant. I fell in love with the Beatles first through their personalities in the Hard Days Night movie - then the brilliant music came next. With BM it was music then personalities. Band Maid is the closest to the Fab 4 I've ever seen as a complete package. No need to apologise for doing a Band Maid doco ahead of other bands. They are a once in a generation talent. THIS!!!!! ^^^^^^^ This is what other band's management NEEDS to understand. The Main reason OTHER than the music so many of us like Band Maid is that the Ladies are approachable. They go out of their way for us their fans. To bring us good music, good entertainment, good shows, and a good experience. And NO, those are not mutually exclusive terms.
It would be great if more bands went out and were more open with their fans. The Ladies of Band Maid, to me, are like I suddenly had 5 more daughters who are rock Goddesses. I can't remember who said it, but they commented that they felt Band Maid was like their "Cool Older Sisters"
The Ladies a "REAL" to us. Not like some of the other bands.

Couldn't said it better myself 👍. One more thing though: for many of us, Band-Maid has been the gate to the whole japanese music scene (I know, they broke that new gate 😁) - before them, I was nearly totally ignorant of it (with a few exceptions), now I follow dozen of bands and artists and keep on exploring deeper their roots. I've always been curious about all music genres, so this curiosity led me to admire artists as diverse as Hiromi Uehara (jazz pianist - genius!), Boris (stoner, drone, doom - genius), Hitsujibungaku (indie rock - genius) or Aina The end (solo singer - genius), besides my love for heavy rock - I recommand you to explore their work. Finally, two young bands I recently discover: the schoolboys and girl punks of BANSHIMOKU (18 years, second album released yesterday) and the four ladies of LETITOUT-Leila, a slightly older band rather unknown because they didn't came to Tokyo (or Osaka or any other big town), but just released a very interesting EP "Taste 'em all" - more metal than what they did before. Keep on the great work Wave!

TL;DR - Yeah, what he said.
Also, sorry about this wall of text ...
I was eight when The Beatles played Ed Sullivan.
    * It's a big world of music out there
I had already started piano lessons, and I was being exposed to a lot of variety in music. My parents danced to Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey. One uncle loved country music and made sure I knew Hank Williams, Porter Wagoner, and Patsy Cline. His son (one of my many older cousins) loved Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, and especially Marty Robbins. My older siblings were already playing piano or in orchestra, or singing in musicals; Showboat, The King and I, and Oklahoma! But as for The Beatles, I didn't get to see them on Ed Sullivan. My family didn't watch much television and it was on Sunday evening anyway. The next day at school, though, it was the talk of the third grade. They had already been on the radio some, and suddenly everyone knew how charimatic they were. Radio in 1964 was much more diverse than it is now. You could hear Little Eva, the Kingston Trio, Louis Armstrong, and The Beach Boys back to back to back. So it wasn't like The Beatles invented anything - if anything they were five years (or more) too late for the rockabilly sound coming out of Sun Records. But they had charisma and a unique style. They had a beat you could dance to ... you know, like beat-les.
    * Music doesn't have winners and losers
What struck me as an eight-year-old was how many classmates assumed if you liked The Beatles then you DIDN'T like The Beach Boys, or Jan and Dean, or Elvis, or whoever. I was never quite sure why. I was getting music thrown at me from all directions and it was all on equal footing. Peter, Paul, and Mary? Great stuff. Dean Martin? Great stuff. Martha and the Vandellas? Great Stuff. The Ventures? Great stuff. Ray Charles? Really great stuff. Glenn Gould? Really great stuff. Little Stevie Wonder? Really really great stuff. But the one constant from 1964 to 1969 was The Beatles. They had multiple songs on the radio practicaly the entire time. They, as much as anyone else, embodied the youthful exuberance of the early '60s, and carried on the hopefulness of the John Kennedy era even after his assassination less than 90 days before they were on Ed Sullivan. Were they the best musicians ever? Oh, probably not; but they were very good at what they did. They weren't jazz musicians, or Broadway musicians, or classical musicians, and they didn't pretend to be. They played rock music. To quote Chuck Berry: "I have no kick against modern jazz / Unless they try to play it too darn fast / And change the beauty of the melody / Until it sounds just like a symphony"
    * Music is more than just music
My point, and I do have one: I still don't understand the attitude - if you like this then you must NOT like that. I like Band-Maid quite a lot. Like you, they've inspired me and broadened my horizons. They've made me passionate about their music. They touch me emotionally and they are outstanding musicians. Undoubtably there are better musicians out there. But you don't have to be a great "musician" to be a great musician. Johnny Cash is a great musician but not because he's a great guitarist or a great singer, it's because he can express himself so well. B. B. King wouldn't be considered a great vocalist or guitarist, but who else can express how it feels to live in a shack in the Mississippi delta with no electricity and no running water, or in the Chicago projects, or looking for a place for you and your band to eat late at night on the road in the South? So anytime someone assumes if you praise Band-Maid you are neglecting Nemophila or Lovebites, or Baby Metal (or Sabaton or Nightwish), I just don't understand it. I like all of them.
    * There are forces working against music appreciation
I don't think Band-Maid or any other musical group will ever again have the sort of impact on the general culture that The Beatles had; or for that matter, Elvis, Zepplin, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the Sugarhill Gang, or Nirvana. There are too many media outlets. Television and radio is losing influence. Look at the bottom of almost any advertising; you see a whole row of icons for Facebook and RUclips and Instagram and Twitch and so on. Social media programs like Facebook seem to foster divisiveness. Social circles seem to become groups of US versus THEM. I hate it and I refuse to participate. I like having a wide circle of friends with many different interests. I like having friends who play the blues, and other friends who like opera, or even the Opry! I like a lot of music, all the way from unlistenable screeching ("Zero Tolerance for Silence") to baroque high art (St. Matthew Passion BWV 244) to cool Jazz ("Kind of Blue" or "Sketches of Spain") to unsophisticated storytelling (like Chris Stapleton or Townes Van Zandt).
    I was sixty-five when I first heard a Band-Maid song.
I watched the video for "Dice" on RUclips and immediately watched about ten more videos. They are the one band that got me to write emails to friends and say "You really need to listen to this." Of course, my friends would say "you know, you do that all the time", but this time I'm being insistent enough they're starting to call me a weeb. Whatever. Band-Maid is a great band for all the reasons you will be covering in your much-anticipated coming videos. I'm looking forward to it ALMOST as much as their Dallas show on October 21st.

Thanks, Wave, well said. Most (not all) other Japanese rock & metal bands don't have a sound that is unique within the type of music they play, unlike Band-Maid who very much do. Like you say, they sit in the sweet spot between catchy/singable and complex/surprising and have that balance down to an art form. There are a few other bands, however -- like Tricot, Broken By The Scream, Paranoid Void, and increasingly, Nemophila -- who I really like and hope will grow in popularity.

While BM is my fave (one might say, obsession), I've also gotten into Glim Spanky's sound (although frustrated with the lack of info in English - and surprisingly since I normally don't care - subs in English for lyrics since their music is often the type that I'd actually pay attention to the words a little), and also a young band called Tricot. I'm not into heavy metal at all - so can't take more than one song of Babymetal, but I fully acknowledge the talent of the band. Thanks, that was a good thing to do. Like you, my favourite is Band-Maid, but I also like the solidarity between these bands.
Following up on how you started this video, I think an episode on Band-Maid's influences would be great. I noticed you almost exclusively listed all-female bands at the start, and I understand why. The reversal (among bands making an impact outside Japan) of the usual gender imbalance is a major part of the story. However, that leaves out some great bands and some very important female musicians too. For example, when both Akane Hirose and Tamu Murata credit Nao Kawakita with inspiring them to play the drums, her band has to be significant here. Plus of course Band-Maid have cited influences outside Japan as well.

With all due respect to the other bands in the Japanese music scene, Band Maid, to me, stands out. While the others are certainly very talented, and have put out some great songs, my interest in those groups wanes as I dig further through their catalogs. Some songs are great, others not so much. This is similar to many, many, rock bands past and present, from anywhere in the world.
Band Maid, to me, is like The Beatles, or Led Zeppelin where, song after song, I find myself wondering if the magic will ever run out? Not yet, it hasn’t.

Along with BAND-MAID, I'm a big fan of BABYMETAL, Gacharic Spin/DOLL$BOXX, SCANDAL. etc.
But I never thought you were disrespecting any of these other groups with your BAND-MAID series.
Still, it's nice of you to clarify your intentions since it sounds like some folks might have gotten the wrong idea.
And I'd love it if you continued the series with some deep dives into some of these other great groups from Japan.
    That would be awesome.

Excellent, and a very good explanation of some of the important things that attract us to this wonderful band. Kinda too bad that you even felt the need to post this vid. Folks who become offended over aesthetic preferences are tiresome: they somehow hear "Vanilla sucks" when you're just saying "I love Chocolate." If you're a content creator like yourself, it's probably best to just blanket ignore these types. Personally I can well understand why you love Band-Maid, as for me and my aesthetics I find no real equivalent in Japanese music. There might be a song here or there that I'll need to listen to again, but these are like drops in the ocean of music that is Band-Maid for me.

Excellent description, Wave. You're writing, delivery and editing for this prologue is really good! You capture much of the essence of what makes Band-Maid special. Your documentary project concept is massive and I can only imagine how much work you're in for. But if it's like the prologue, we're all in for quite a show... and a valuable show at that!
Here's some info you might like I found from Hiawatha G. 07/13/21
Japan has had an active all-girl metal scene since at least 1981. This is a starter list of all-female (or in six cases, mixed, female-led) metal, punk, hard-rock and post-rock bands, with founding dates. It's mostly alphabetical, except for the first three, which are at the top of the list for historical reasons. They set the table for the explosion of Japanese female hard-rock, punk and metal bands. Note: I have deliberately picked clips that are reactor-friendly because they are high quality and are representative of the band's main style.
Show-Ya (1981 The original female J-metal band, founded before Metallica-this is from their 24th (!) anniversary concert-and they are still touring): ruclips.net/video/oJ_5Gv3vFjQ/видео.html
Shonen Knife (1981 The world’s first bubblegum punk band. They have done several world tours. They also perform as a Ramones tribute band called Osaka Ramones): ruclips.net/video/w9LUlYzOiWs/видео.html
Destrose (2005; This band was never stable, but has become almost mythic in Japanese metal history, because so many great bands spun out of Destrose, including Lovebites--you will recognize the drummer and bassist): ruclips.net/video/G1VwEGHPIhs/видео.html
Aldious (2008 Glamorous and kick-ass rockers-one of the first generation all-girl metal bands, along with Destrose) ruclips.net/video/sfkJT0rra-8/видео.html
Asterism (2013 Not all female, but will melt your face off- the guitarist Haruka Noma is off the charts talented and still a teen-ager) ruclips.net/video/IfxMi0Bx4x0/видео.html
Babymetal (2010) The flagship “Kawaii metal” band and the most well-known Japanese metal act outside of Japan. Combining “Kawaii” (cute) Japanese pop tropes over a thunderous heavy metal backing. ruclips.net/video/cK3NMZAUKGw/видео.html
Band-Maid (2013 OK, there are 100+ great songs by them. Here is a live clip): ruclips.net/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/видео.html

Lovebites (2016) Modern Power, Speed, Thrash and Heavy Metal. Most recent official MV, even better than Shadowmaker IMO: ruclips.net/video/hLFelI93VkM/видео.html
    Mardelas (2014 Another spin-off from Destrose; mixed male/female) ruclips.net/video/Wd8P7wTnWJs/видео.html

54 Nude Honeys (1992 Early Japanese punk-they toured the UK and Europe): ruclips.net/video/jHnJSoGN5Mk/видео.html

Rie aka Suzaku (instrumental guitar) ruclips.net/video/m6Z2GD5SqNs/видео.html
Sokoninaru (2015?) Extremely technical, progressive metal/math rock (male/female cofounders)
    ruclips.net/video/MVxl0zXZBR4/видео.html
Sonic Lover Reckless (2018 Special project of Miyako Watanabe, one of the two insane Lovebites guitarists): ruclips.net/video/DXZ-qhxd1VI/видео.html
Telecide (2016 Metalcore, aggressive and melodic at the same time) ruclips.net/video/keq-7ZCluFc/видео.html
Tricot (2010 Post-progressive math-rock, very technical, crazy time signatures and polyrhythms) ruclips.net/video/P_B_GalsJrE/видео.html
Trident (formerly Kakumei. Evolved from pop-punk to thrashier hard rock; several lineup changes but the bassist and lead singer have been constants) ruclips.net/video/9k9txMouU34/видео.html
Unlucky Morpheus (2008 Female lead (Fuki) and violin (Jill). This band is a deep well unto itself, they cross many subgenres of metal; Fuki and Jill also do other projects and Fuki is lead for at least two other bands including Doll$Boxx, above): ruclips.net/video/V8i_QhOgsKw/видео.html
Wagakki Band (2012 Folk-Metal fusion band, all jedi-level musicians, half of them play traditional Japanese instruments and the other half play standard metal instruments) This song was originally written for a virtual (AI) singer, referred to as a Vocaloid:
    ruclips.net/video/Q2meWkWqc-I/видео.html
There are many more (others that come to mind are BRATS, Drop’s, Stereopony, Scandal, Princess Princess; plus the Bang-Dream projects, which are live groups based on Manga series, etc; Some of these tend more in the pop direction; And of course, there are other female-fronted Kawaii-metal groups like Ladybaby and Ironbunny, to name the two best-known after Babymetal.

Thank you Wave so much, I really appreciate all the explanation you said about Band-Maid. Especially, the part you described how unique their sound is. There are bunch of other rock bands out there, but the reason this band really stands out for me is because of its complexity and the groove they create. I know so many other band members playing their instruments so well and "fast", but it doesn't hit my attention. If it's just about the "technics", I'd rather listening to the old legends, instead.
Anyway, it is hard for me, as a Japanese, to put my thoughts about this band into words, I mean in English, so I can't thank you enough for what you did. I am looking forward to this new series and find another good band. Arigato!!!

And that they also introduced many of us to other rock bands coming out of Japan, both pre and post B-M. I've haven't been so into music lately than when I discovered Band-Maid. I like to tell friends that rock didn't die, it just moved to Japan. Looking forward to more of your series. I was talking to a friend the other day and I said exactly all that you just said in this prologue, EVERY word!! ... well, I didn't, but I can relate to all this and have the same thoughts over Band-Maid and why they are my favorite band... it all begins by the music but then, when you start to "know them" through interviews or comments they make (like the one you mention over the acoustic live but also the commented version of the 2020 live at Line Cube Shibuya), and it gradually mutates into a sort of passion for those 5 persons.
Another great news is that you plan to do more of these documentaries about other bands. I do have a few requests:
-SCANDAL (it's a MUST! - Another band that it's worth knowing more about each individual, great personalities - although I love them from those first 6 albums, it's that kind of band that I will always want to listen to whatever they release... the amount of awesome songs throughout these 16 years is amazing... )
    &
-SILENT SIREN (I simply love this cool sweet-pop band like some "guilty-pleasure" - it contrasts a lot with 99% of what I listen to but it's just a very special band...it's pop-rock with vocals, guitar, bass, drums and keyboards and a great song writer (Naoki Kubo it's like the 5th member)...
The great thing about these two bands is that there is a lot of documented material in very early stages.
I would also love to see some documentary about Maximum The Hormone since I only recently started to buy the albums and DVDs, don't know much more than what I read in wiki...
Anyway you go, these or any other Japanese bands, I'm in - love music documentaries about the bands I love and about the bands I know nothing about - it's a way to expand... Cheers!

They are riff machines. And hey embrace variety and complexity as a way to enhance the songs, rather than letting virtuosic showcases become an end, unto themselves.

I don't want to dissect the point because a lot of what was said is 100% valid. The older bands absolutely carried the flag for decades and some of the newer bands are definitely carrying it forward. I would argue that Babymetal isn't really rock in the sense we are discussing it here and Gacha Pin are power pop more than rock. Band Maid are one of those once in a generation bands that just check all the boxes in the best way possible. You nailed that perfectly here.

Band Maid is carrying the flag for not just just Japanese rock, but rock music in general, and that's why they're so important. That, along with the fact that they never disappoint. And like you said: they seem so down to earth (a trait many of their peers seem to share. It's refreshing!)
I just discovered them at the end of June, and they've quickly become one of my favorite bands - ever. They never cease to amaze.
I'd just gotten back in to trying to teach myself Japanese, and "Thrill" came up in my RUclips recommendations. That started me down a rabbit hole into the world of J-Rock, and it has been an awesome journey. Because of Band Maid, a whole new world of music has been opened to me. I'm now a fan of Nemophila, Lovebites, Aldious, Mary's Blood, etc. And the guys aren't too shabby either. The Gazette just put out an amazing record ("Mass") this past year, and K-A-Z is a pretty cool dude, too.
But after Band Maid, the band that has really captured my heart is Scandal. They're not really like those other bands, in that they really aren't what you'd call "virtuosos". But their songwriting prowess is formidable. The arrangements are amazing. I've absolutely fallen in love with their entire catalog. And honestly, I think their latest album, "Mirror", might very well be their best. Like I said, it's not Band Maid, but it's definitely something worth exploring.
But yes, all of this started for me because of Band Maid. Without them, I'd still be bemoaning the sorry state of modern music. I thought the music I love had died, but it turns out, it's still alive and well, and has moved to Japan. Now I'm happy again. 😊

As good as Band Maid are (and they are VERY good). the big difference between them and BABYMETAL is that while Band Maid have brought about a badly needed revival of interest in an existing genre, BABYMETAL created something entirely new which had never been done before. It's all down to individual musical taste of course.... everything is equally valid, but personally I am most excited by a band that is exploring new territory and pushing the envelope: which is BABYMETAL. Gacharic Spin, Band Maid. Asterism. Lovebites, D_Drive, Nemophila and Aldious are all doing amazing work. Right now the Japan rock/metal scene is much more vibrant than it is in the West, which seems to be stagnating by comparison at the moment.

Interesting comment! I totally respect what you’re saying on this, but from my perspective, BABYMETAL blended two things that already existed. Metal and JPop idol vocals. I mean idols have been around since the 60s. But BABYMETAL did do a heck of an amazing job bringing those elements together and creating a fresh experience! I could be missing something though and of course correct me if I’m wrong!

@@WavePotter No, I don't think you-re missing anything: I think we're broadly on the same page here.
If I could draw a completely unpretentious oriental gastronomic analogy (lol): Sweet foods have always existed.......
sour foods have always existed. One day, many centuries ago... a creative Eastern chef decided to try combining the two:
producing a new "sweet and sour" taste sensation which is greater than the sum of its parts. It's exactly the same with BABYMETAL.
If we're lucky, maybe once in a decade a band will come along who totally redefine what is possible in mainstream music:
(I won't bore you with obvious past examples)...but at the moment, BABYMETAL are filling that role magnificently! :)

Many of the best Japanese rock bands haven't even been reviewed by you or many other reviewers. My personal favorite Japanese band is SHISHAMO, which is absolutely much bigger than most of the bands that have been popular with western reviewers. They aren't as hard as Band Maid, but they are a fantastic trio.

Only Japan (and heavy) band i listen is Babymetal because i'm not heavy or rock music fan and i'm not very like classic heavy bands. Babymetal is only heavy band which i like because they play more universal music. Which is liked not only by rock lovers but also by everyone else.
Band-Maid is a more classical band, with its own flavor, of course, but they have a completely different tone of music.
I like the music and vocals of Babymetal more. Especially the concerts of 2016+. (not really into early Babymetal when they were kids)
besides Babymetal I listen to EDM (trance, house, dnb) That's why I'm not very interested in other heavy bands. My musical interests are too far from them. And only Babymetal managed to hook me with something.
This is the "magic" of Babymetal - even people who are very far from metal like them.
And that's why I usually don't listen to the opinions of metalheads about Babymetal - they just don't know what they're talking about, because they see them as a contender for a metal band. Babymetal is much more than just a metal band. They are more global.

Until the return of Babymetal, Band-Maid is the most successful Japanese band worldwide right now. Saki, of Nemophila, seems to agree. In an interview with Herman Li, she said that Band-Maid is now the most successful band outside of Japan. I don't think she was just talking all-female bands. If you look at RUclips subscribers, Band-Maid is closing in on 470,000. The great X Japan has less than half those subscribers. Dir En Grey has only 137,000 subscribers. I think when you get past Babymetal's enormous popularity, Band-Maid is clearly the second most popular rock/metal band from Japan ever. When you factor in songwriting and musicianship, it is not hyperbole to say Band-Maid is the most important rock/metal band in Japan and one of the most important in the world.

@@alohahola8055 I am always serious, but that is beside the point. Your response is a perfect example of why the idiom "knee jerk reaction" was created. I actually said that RUclips subscribers = popularity and success of a band. I then said that popularity and success + songwriting + musicianship = the most important rock/metal band in Japan and one of the most important in the world. In other words, their importance is a product of their growing worldwide popularity and the fact they are so damn good. I am very serious about that. Now, hopefully, you can respond with something a bit more meaningful and insightful than "are you serious?"

One OK Rock is a different story. I did overlook them probably because I consider them too pop rock so my bias for hard rock came into play. They are an older band and exploded worldwide about ten years after they formed. Let's see what happens with Band-Maid in the next couple of years. Although I concede that One Ok Rock vs Band-Maid is a valid debate to have, as a younger band, the Band-Maid story is still being written.
Let me start the debate. I live in Texas, so I know that both Band-Maid and One OK Rock are both playing the House of Blues in Dallas and Houston. I am sure there are other identical venues since Live Nation is promoting both tours but I haven't compared yet. The One Ok Rock shows are a few weeks before the Band-Maid shows. They don't have that particular feel of "Oh, this is something only Band-Maid can do..."
For example Babymetal did everything you said in this video, take it to another level in creativity, passion (of their own and for the fans) and production, created something of their own in the genre and erased some borders between genres.
Only that they're Metal not Rock, and they don't interact with their fans outside of the shows or satisfy their curiosity (it seem has became a habit to protect their private life since they began as child idols so they avoid encountering any kind of wierdo potential)

So, two bands that I REALLY love from the beginnings of the 2010's rise in Japanese Rock/Metal are Aldious and Cyntia.
Aldious is a dual guitar power metal, Similar to The Lovebites but more ethereal vocals. They began in 2009 and have had two singer eras)
Cyntia is a mix of prog-rock/J-pop and seems literally unheard of (although two of their members are in the Neon Yeon Guitar girls thing you showed clips from). they released an album a year for five consecutive years. they began in 2012 but their early stuff is hard to find and they don't always translate the names of songs from Japanese characters so searching can be hard.
If you'd like to check out what i call the "aunts" of modern Japanese metal (show-ya is the Mama) I'd recommend Dominator by Aldious. For cyntia (copy and paste) 睡蓮と蝶 (translates to waterlilies and butterflies but that won't find them on youtube :( probably a cause of their unkownness)

Apparently AVEX is blocking reaction vids non stop, but if there's a way to get a piece out there on BRIDEAR that samples how good they are and props them up where they belong, I'd be really excited about that. There are plenty of great MVs out there, so maybe a piece with any of their promo stuff that's allowed to be used with links to their MVs : they deserve to be as big as Nemophila at the moment IMO, their latest album is THAT good. (Aegis of Athena) outstanding I have listened to tracks from that album daily for months now. my top three J-rock bands at THIS moment are: Band-Maid, BRIDEAR and Nemophila. another band that's VERY different sounding, but has been around a while and is pushing the limits of their style is Polkadot Stingray, really talented and entertaining MVs too. very unique style and sound. Ummm ..... hard rock goes back as far in Japan as it does elsewhere, and there are quite a few acts that this generation would have grown up with. At the turn of the century, there was Judy and Mary (Yuki's band before she went solo). At their best they made a snarling wall of sound with powerful vocals -- try the Warp Tour Final, notably the closing(?) workout on Lolita-A-Go-Go.
Shortly after that, FLiP came out of Okinawa -- the first track (DARTS) on their first EP made clear what they were about. They peaked a few albums later on Love Toxicity, and almost anything from the Love the Toxic City Tour (especially Katoniago) is great.
And so forth. As for the "Tenth Anniversary" -or thereabouts- bands, attention should surely be paid to Tricot? Try their first single, 99.974℃ -- most live versions don't catch all the intricacy within the power, but the "promo video" -studio track set to live visuals- certainly does.

As much as we all love BandMaid, like you pointed out here, many bands and artists revived rock. Maybe a more appropriate line is "How JAPAN Saved Rock". Then cover the many, many bands that had contributions to the revival, maybe even one band at a time under that title. Many will still argue that point, but it has to be at least 80% of the reason rock was revived. The U.S. can be cited in another documentary "How the United States KILLED ROCK!" All of this would take hundreds of hours to complete, so maybe start a donation pool to fund it. You shouldn't be expected to spend all that time for little to no compensation. Accept contributions, and every time a certain level is achieved you do the next video. On PayPal with a comment of what the funds are for, or a special link for the project. Please don't split it into another channel. The caveat being, that contributions are for the project, not to suggest or steer the project in any specific direction. You, and only you, should make that determination. You may change or add to the series if commenters point out to you valid points, like the comments that inspired you to do this video (very well done, if I may say so) or something you missed, just like you did in this video, You are great at this, and no matter how you do this, it will make a few unhappy. This will be a very interesting look at the Japanese rock & metal scene as long as Wave can stay impartial haha.
Been a life long rock/metal dude, i have been swept up in the Japanese music scene. I appreciate alot of these bands bringing new styles to a mostly exhausted scene. Every member of these bands are extremely talented unlike Western bands who mostly rely on individual members that stand out more than others
We all have personal favorites mine are Nemophila and Hanabie. Not only for there music style but for not needing / using a gimmick to gain attention by keeping it old school much like 80s Metallica & Pantera.. Live they bring tons energy n charisma and rock hard!! Also like Lovebites for there thrash side, there biggest issue is the singers limitations with her range. Its hard to think Baby metal as a band as the band and the 1...3 singers are really 2 separate things, personally 1 dont see them as anything special just lucky! Band Maid have worked hard over many years to get the rewards & status they deserve. Not the biggest fan but appreciate them beyond there gimmick, which was 1st done by Saki's band Mixx in 2010 lol. Another band that should be included in the series is Destrose, this band almost needs a series of its own with is history, sheer amount of members and bands created by former members.
