He reminds me of a Pakistani ex of mine. Our first date I told a story about getting a red BMX for my 6th birthday and he told me about stealing his neighbour's donkey cart and joyriding through the village with his brothers. It was the most hilarious culture clash.
Carrie Lynn that's actually cute !! and really nice to hear from someone else who isn't a Pakistan....thankfully there are people who don't think we are creeps -_- Good life to you Carrie...love from Pakistan ^^
Pakistani here. It kinda depends on the family he was raised in, and his immediate community, but I dont want people to get the impression that Pakistanis are a bunch of socially awkward weirdos. 182 million population, so it's not like one big homogenous culture (which of course the US isn't as well. Different regions of America have completely different cultures) Just wanted to get that out there. Kumail is hilarious in Silicon Valley, love that show!
Thanks I am Indian and I totally get it myself. He probably grew up in an all boys boarding school over there and never had the chance to pursue higher education there which is co-ed and I'm sure he would have been able to shake a woman's hand at that point!
Yasmine Xo Actually Kumail Nanjiani went to Karachi Grammar school (same school as I go to now) which is a highly selective and extremely liberal school in Karachi. It's co ed and we have proms and people date and everything so it's highly unlikely that he's never shaken hands with a woman. This is most likely a joke or one giant innuendo :)
+Pravoizavlijesvijeta Pakistan is a heavily Islamic country and except in liberal interpretations of Islam, physical contact between two people of different genders is prohibited unless they're married to each other. According to Wikipedia, Nanjiani was a former Muslim so his story is probably literal.
I LOVE THIS GUY! :) His stand-up is great. I think he's writing a movie, as well. Also, he's in those old Navy ads that have been showing on youtube. like, I love that ad so much, I actually watch the whole thing.
Oh, God, where I live there is this rule that you're not supposed to shake a woman's hand first - you're supposed to wait till she extends her hand first, because you must let her decide whether she wants to shake hands with you. But almost nobody knows why this rule exists - they only know the "don't shake a woman's hand" part. So whenever I try to shake a guy's hand they leave my hand hanging or straight up say something like "What's your problem?". It's sooooo annoying to me, so impolite.
I mean if somebody extends their hand to shake yours and you say to them, angrily "What's your problem?" and then leave their hand hanging, then how is it NOT impolite. Even if you're unaware of this rule, you can infer that it is rude to do something like that. Similarly, there is no written rule that I know of that requires you not to say "You're fat" to a newly met person, but polite people just KNOW that it is impolite.
Oh, honey, if you think that is rare, that is a clear sign you're not a woman in my part of the world (and possibly in any part of the world). Besides, is there a single culture where leaving someone's hand hanging without a word of explanation is not considered even a bit rude or weird?
corhydron111 "Oh, honey, if you think that is rare" That is extremely condescending and insulting, not to mention rude. Calling people honey is pretty much implying you think I am lesser than you, and akin to a child. It's so annoying to me, and impolite.
I know! That's why I thought he meant it literally at first... but they're making such a big deal out of it that I thought: "wait... this may be about something else xD"
The Music Man is another movie that takes place in Iowa. I'm surprised with Stephen being a theatre kid he didn't reference it with the opening number "You ought to give Iowa a try!"
Well to anybody who has opinions that this happens everywhere let me tell you its not the case everywhere in Pakistan! Maybe he was raised in a all boy boarding school or in a more conservative culture. Many schools in the capital i.e Islamabad and Rawalpindi...we call these cities "Twin-Cities" usually all schools and colleges are co-educational and every university is also co educational. So shaking hands is pretty normal...infact you can often see people hugging eachother as well. Islamabad is different from normal cities. Its quite modern, better livelihood, better education and job opportunities too. P.S I'm so happy that finally a Pakistani is there in Hollywood :D
What I don't understand is - he is now a successful AMERICAN. Doing really well for himself. And yet every interviewer wants to know if it was a culture shock when he came to America? I mean can we please have some original questions?
saw some Nanjiani interviews with late night shows and i must say: his suit game is excellent but his shirt choice is up to debate... ...UNLESS IT'S 100% INTENTIONAL, then he has my respect! :) nothing to say on the comedic flow, the guy has it and I find him hilarious
well we grew up on shows like Friends. That is the biggest American show I watched as a kid in 90s Pakistan. That was NYC. I watched Buzzfeed at times, again LA, SF or NYC for the most part. At most there is Robocop and 8Mile in Detroit. So that is America to most foreigners.
This guy shakes hands!

" Shaking hands with a woman, haha got you" . LOL this description bios crack me up
Lol I just noticed that after your comment. Haha
Oh with shaking hands he doesn’t really mean shaking hands
nah he literally means shaking hands. Muslim men aren't allowed to shake hands with women.
GAHHBU lol
Whose dad wrote this?
He is genuinely funny. I love him in Silicon Valley.
The Big Bang Theory for me ;)
Conan's interviews with Kumail are by far the best. He sits there and let's him tell his stories without interrupting every 10 seconds
That's conan's style. Hearing and reacting, not like the others that talk over the anecdotes
This guy is so clever and imaginative with words, even though he's not a native speaker. Respect
He could probably speak English before moving to America because it'd taught in schools
He graduated from Karachi Grammar School, the most elitist school in the country, and he's never shaken hands with a woman......give me a break.

lol Pakistani and Indians know what he is talking about.. Because we are on another level of Dark humour 😂

As an Iowa native, "lots of pork and shaking hands" is a pretty good way to sum up the state.
I feel like this is one giant innuendo...
are they talking about shaking hands or are they talking about "shaking hands"? too much meta in this interview...
+Pravoizavlijesvijeta Pakistan is a heavily Islamic country and except in liberal interpretations of Islam, physical contact between two people of different genders is prohibited unless they're married to each other. Actually, in Pakistan and other Muslim nations, I believe men shaking hands with women is just not done.
I know! That's why I thought he meant it literally at first... but they're making such a big deal out of it that I thought: "wait... this may be about something else xD"
