  • What are the visual trends in brands, design, photography, and illustration? What are the visual trends we should pay attention to in 2019? How do these trends impact your brand and marketing? How can you utilize these visual trends to connect with your audience?
Brenda Milis is the Principal of Creative Services and Visual Trends for Adobe Stock. As a photo industry veteran and experienced creative director, she leads the Creative Services group driving three key, interrelated activities: servicing the visual needs of top enterprise clients; identifying visual trends; and curating content for global merchandising activities.

3:17 - The Power of Visual Fluency
5:19 - Visual Trend: Natural Instincts
12:44 - Visual Trend: Creative Democracy
23:40 - Visual Trend: Disruptive Expression
31:00 - Visual Trend: Brand Stand
    41:00 - Q&A Discussion
As designers and brands know, we live in a fast-paced, intensely visual age, which means that images are one of the most important ways brands connect with consumers. That’s the reason visual fluency - the ability to see visual trends coming and understand what they mean to consumers - is so important. And it’s the purpose behind Adobe Stock’s Visual Trends. Our trend reports help the creative community spot trends as they’re evolving, understand what they mean to consumers, and build on them for maximum impact.
In 2019, our visual landscape will reflect far more than fleeting fads, likes, and shares. We’ll be surrounded by images that capture passionate, beautiful, contentious, messy cultural conversations about values, how we express our individuality and experiences, and how we find refuge in tumultuous times.
The Adobe Stock team looked around the world, from fashion runways and art galleries to the business world, pop culture, and social media - all with the goal of uncovering the major visual trends that will shape the year.
Here’s an early peek at the trends we’re forecasting for 2019 (Read more here): theblog.adobe.com/seeing-2019...

Awesome content! So it seems like a way to determine a brand’s authenticity to a “stand” is to look into that brand’s history to see if they're consistent with that type of messaging and truly what they stood for.

Excellent and inspiring content! I have seen many presentations like this by Pantone and at conferences, and I found this one to be most useful with Chris and Brenda's excellent dialogue about how brands can practically implement these culture-accelerating trends. I also realized that I combined the first two trends on an Instagram post I put up an hour before watching this lol!

Loved Hearing from Brenda! Could listen to her talk trends all day. Was interesting when she said they are not like fashion trends though, because the fashion trends are the same! I think the title Natural Instincts was even used in Promostyl and the sentiments are the same. Those ones stick around for years too, its just some fast-fashion high street stores will have you believe you need to buy something new every week.

Hey love your content! I have a plausible theory about the rise in the demand for more representative imagery that could ruffle feathers - I don't think its caused by a rise in consumer demand, but a fear of consumer retaliation from the intersectional fringe. People are so quick to outrage these days that content creators and brands who put themselves out there are at high alert at all times and are willing to do anything to prevent a firestorm from the left. Whether this is a good societal change or not is up for discussion, but I highly doubt that this trend is motivated by the public at large only investing in companies that grandstand with their brand's platform

I am more pragmatic. It's very easy to overthink things in the visual space, especially since you can easily superimpose subjectivity into it.
Example: Natural Instincts can very much be distilled into Korean and Japanese approach to visual harmony. Ernest Femollosa was making similar discoveries of "organic wholeness" in Japanese Art at the turn of the century. Frank Lloyd credited Japan for inspiring his foray into "Organic Architecture". Japanese design has an entire subdivision dedicated to connecting flowers to ideas and emotions (Hanakotoba) etc. etc.
And more presently, Korea has been pushing more organic and "natural" design trends for the better part of the last decade. It's not an inherently new discovery that requires layers and layers of interpretation and study. The world is simply being increasingly globalized, so are the unique design languages and approaches.
Look at the work of Seoul based CFC studio....They've beein putting out 2019 design trends since 2013 lmao

Brands today are forced to show themselves in a specific light. We see the creativity behind the people doing it and respecting it, but this doesn't change sometimes the "trend" of expressing incredibly strong your position, because we know what happens when somebody points a finger at you now in SM and get's the political train behind him/her.
