...I think Mitchells was probably the sleeper hit of 2021. The best movie of that year. If Sony make more movies like this then I am 100% on board!

that hand gesture Rick makes when looking at the sold house makes you realize that he feels a bit hurted for leaving that house, but, as soon he sees his newborn daughter, he sees why he did that hard descision, for her daughter 😌

What I love about Rick is that they made him an ACTUAL nature guy, not someone who watched nature documentaries, not one that admires explorers, not someone who'se only approach to nature was that neighborhood where more rural back then, not a fake nature guy like various boomers are, but an actual real campist, survival, expert.
That way, EVEN if you go with a bias to see the movie (whenever against boomers and their "god dang phones" or the youth and the "shut up boomer lolz"), you still can respect Rick for being an actual nature guy

@@demonminer8093 I still think it's an improvement over the "incompetent dad" trope. Perhaps a slight overcompensation but it was still more relatable to me when comparing them to my father who also knows his way around tools and being an outdoors man from being a boy scout.
Granted my dad unlike Mitchell's adapted very well to technology as it vastly improved his abilty to work.

Its not a huge detail, but one that I think makes this scene hit even harder, but that house that Rick has to give up isn’t just his dream house, he literally built the entire thing himself. You could probably call it his magnum opus, but he gave it up for his family.

I love this movie. This scene, along with the scene when Rick is trapped and talking with Mark about how Katie's videos have inspired him, just hits a perfect chord with me. This movie's strongest attribute (aside from maybe the animation) is making genuine characters, with understandable goals, attributes, and interests. You understand exactly where everyone is coming from with every line they say, and no interactions between the family feel forced or out of character. It's just genuinely wonderful to watch these people interact with each other, and that's the sign of well written characters

It was less the movie itself, but more the impetus. The FB/Apple guy talking about the Conflict of the Police Chief & His Daughter, being a Metaphor for his own relationship wit her. Seeing that people GENUINELY enjoy it an it has REAL Merit & Future. That it's a Skill others find Valuable. To say nothing of how much of a Jerk he realizes he's been, an that somewhere deep inside his daughter loves him & is trying to reach out just as much.
But has GIVEN UP on making Peace with her Dad, that she felt it was IMPOSSIBLE to bridge the gap that now exists between them.
An it's something I feel with my own Dad. In some ways our relationship is better, and some ways it's worse. It's hard, because while I love my Dad, I don't always like him a lot.

Let's appreciate the fact that the dynamic between the Mitchells feels very natural and fun at the same time. Everybody has their own problems instead of one person ruining it for everybody. The bond between Katie and Aaron is very wholesome and the conflict between Katie and Rick is something we can all relate too.
And also that goddamn animation is SO GOOD! it looks like a 2D painting!

I haven’t actually seen this since it first came out, and I forgot just how hard this movie hits both in the animation and the story. And I think this scene hits particularly hard just because of how blunt it is; the confrontation is Katie’s dad directly hearing that she lied, followed by her and Aaron having that breakdown in the shadows.

This movie destroyed me when I watched it, I was crying so hard. What gets to me the most is that even though the dad doesn't understand his daughters love for tech, he still tries to understand it in the end. He compromises and tries to understand, which is more than I can say about my own dad understanding my identity and my art career. He is, at his core, an amazing dad that does his best for his kid, something I don't really see in a lot of movies about "family is important". The dad is always an okay dad, or a less than stellar dad, but that's always pushed aside because "Oh but he's family!"
This movie showed what family, chosen or bio, is really about! Understanding each other and trying to support them. Educating yourself and letting yourself see something new so you can be there for the person you care about.

I've spent over 20 years growing up alongside my parents without really ever getting to know them until these last few years. So the scene where Katie learns about what her dad had given up for her really, and I mean REEAALLLYY, just reached me. It's a hard thing to process the amount of sacrifice that can go into your life without you even knowing about it. And just the amount of gratitude and guilt and love that a revelation like that can hit you with can be really eye-opening and overwhelming. Add to that the fact that my dad is a "work-with-his-hands" goofy type and my mom has supported my choice to become an animator even if we never really connected over it and this movie just... It just spoke to me so directly and sincerely that it'll always be special to me.

For me, PAL's best moment had to be when the Mitchells infiltrated her lair, and as soon as they ascended onto the platform to get up to her, that's when PAL figures out where they are. At first, she's just giving out orders to her minions like any villain, but then she spots them deviating from the path the other bots were on and basically begins taunting them and proceeds to pick them apart using their internet history and the security footage recovered from where they've been. And then as they continue upwards to PAL, PAL is just watching them ascend and continues taunting them. She knows it's them, but instead of calling them out, she lets them blow their own cover by taunting and picking them apart. That was very creepy and terrifying for me.

Was honestly expecting just another "technology bad" extended animated skit of a movie when I first got into the movie. I was terribly wrong - did not really expect that it would be yet another favorite animated movie I've ever watched!
(Edit: finally went through the video since I always had this nervousness when it comes to coverage of my favorite movies) I just freaking loved how the movie resonated with me especially with Rick and Katie's dynamic. That particular scene where he comforts her as she was crying before going into summer camp literally resonated with me given I also had such experience back when I was in elementary. The divide both have also somewhat manifested in my current days too in a way, and really loved how this movie perfectly shows that it can still be fixed with mutual trust with each other. Really a stellar movie throughout, and probably with the most human story when it comes to emotions considering this is literally a movie about a robot apocalypse.

This movie is a masterpiece and I love it so much. Also it does showing and not telling really well, which many movies really don't have much anymore.

For a robot apocalypse movie, this really isn’t about bashing technology, at least in my eyes. Focusing on this scene alone, without its mirror from the father’s POV, leans into that idea, but the two together tell a different story. This is a movie about how we throw things, and people, away and how important it is to see each other’s perspectives.
The first time we see the moose, Katie has basically thrown it away, having forgotten its meaning and the happy times with her father it represents. Now it’s just a thing he gave her, a thing to be moved on from as she grows up and away from a person she believes will never understand her.
The villain is an old AI, thrown away as the world advances, actually mirroring Rick.
Technology in the movie is only ever a bad thing in throw away jokes, whereas in the actual plot, it does far more good than harm. Katie is a RUclipsr, and uses that to express things she is incapable of saying directly. The camcorder allows Katie to see the things that Rick couldn’t tell her.
Technology isn’t bad. It’s kind of neutral, really. It allows people to be more themselves than they can be in real life, and whether that’s a person desperately trying to repair a relationship or the kind of person who throws others away is up to the individual.
