I remember Zathura coming FROM Jumanji in the book. Like the kid throws down the Jumanji board breaking it and Zathura pops out. I was a kid myself when I read it so I could definitely be misrembering.
I think Kristen Stewart’s character served the purpose of maintaining that perspective of how crazy everything happening is. The boys adapted pretty quickly to the craziness, but her arriving late to the game (literally) felt like it kept the emotion grounded because she’s freaking out.
@kaptainrogers Originally, it was a kids' book written in the 80s. The sequel to it was Zathura, but instead of being jungle themed, it was space themed.
Jumanji, Zathura, Race to Witch Mountain (2009), Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), Bridge to Teribithia, and The Last Mimzy were movies I overly played and annoyed everyone with at home 😂
In the Jumanji book the very last illustration is Walter and Danny walking past Judy and Peter's house with the Jumanji board game in hand. (They tried to play Jumanji first but switched to Zathura)
DAMN, THIS MOVIE IS A SUCH A THROWBACK😭. It's so surreal seeing Josh Hutcherson so young. He was such an a-hole older brother at first, but I'm glad he changed towards the end and learned to treat his little brother well🙌🏼😄✊🏼
It’s just so bizarre to see young Peeta Mellark and Bella Swan in the same movie. It’s even crazier that this movie was three years before the first Twilight movie. The same year as this movie came out, Robert Pattinson was also Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire and Taylor Lautner was Sharkboy in Sharkboy and Lavagirl! Now I want to see RR do reactions for the Harry Potter series, Sharkboy and Lavagirl and also the Spy Kids series (considering that Robert Rodriguez directed SB&LG).
First Jumanji and now Zathura. Whoever is making these cursed board games really needs to be found and given a good thrashing. Like seriously, who knows what other messed up stuff they could have made. lol
I believe they're part of the same group who made the comic in MLP where reading it sucks you into the comic and you have to stop the supervillan without being killed. EDIT Mamba from open graves too where if you win you get a free wish and if your character dies you die the same way. Not into the game but similar cursed theme.
This movie was playing on tv all the time when I was a kid and specifically advertised as Zathura: Jumanji 2 on YTV, before they made an actually sequel 😂❤
@@lewisharvey9109the magic of the board game is an adventure of exploration. At one time an exploration adventure was a jungle. The board game evolved when people were more interested in exploring space. In the original book.
I'm honestly so happy that you guys enjoyed the movie! I know that Zathura doesn't usually get alot of love like Jumanji does, with people just calling it "Space Jumanji" or a quote on quote "rip-off" of Jumanji, which honestly hurts that it gets overshadowed like that for the more recognizable and commercially viable Jumanji. HOWEVER, I still truly believe that Zathura will soon start to get more attention as time goes on, because it really is a great movie and spinoff sequel. The cast is great, the practical effects are fantastic, and how Jon Favreau directed the whole thing to feel like an adventure from the 80s/90s holds up pretty well. I'm honestly so hopeful that Zathura will return to the spotlight of the silverscreen. Maybe not with the whole "board game turning into a video game" treatment like the recent Jumanji movies are, but who knows? :)
1 - The idiom isn't "quote on quote" it is "quote, unquote." Which really isn't needed in text as you can just use " marks to point out that you're repeating something someone else is saying. 2 - I think that Zathura was a great film and that it would make a fabulous video game transformation much like the Jumanji sequels. Let's face it, space based video games are wildly popular and would be a fun sequel to do. Edit: Don't take me wrong here, I agree Zathura didn't get the recognition it deserved. I am just picking nits with the idiom part of my comment. I hope you're having a great day when you read this.
This video just gave me the throwback of a lifetime! My brother and I absolutely loved this movie when it first came out and we never failed to miss the rewatch on satellite TV 😂
I actually had the board game they made as a tie in for the movie. I remember buying it with my mom and sister at Toys “R” Us and we instantly played it once we got home. We unfortunately didn’t go to space, fight against Zorgons and meet Dax Shepard as the Astronaut/grown up Walter. But I eventually won the game and reached Zathura!
One of my favorite early hints about the astronaut being Walter is the astronaut knew they had a pilot light in the basement. It's not a common thing, and he just got there. He had to have been in they house before
Pilot lights in the basement were a very common thing into the 1990's. Even if the astronaut wasn't Walter, seeing how there was a gas hob, indicated that the house was most likely heated with gas, too. If it was set today, that would be a more likely indicator.
I remember seeing this as one of my favourite Kristen Stewart performances. Rewatching it years later (alongside with the other Jumanji movies), I still think she was actually really good in this movie
To piggie back off of Aaron‘s idea of a pirate version of Jumanji I’ve always thought it’d be cool to have like a medieval knight version. You could even have it like Camelot themed.

It was a sweet crazy trip down memory lane today with you guys. Thanks for the fun again as always love u 🫶🏽✌️🎬🎬🌌🌌🚀👾☄️🛰😅
I'm SOOO happy you didn't figure out the twist at the end with the brother. I kinda guess it earlier in the movie and I wish I hadn't because it took away from the twist. Still, excellent twist! Rewatching it you can see how many times the astronaut essentially says he was in their situation with his brother in the past.
Aaron’s idea for a water jumanji is exactly what i thought of after seeing this forever ago. Like a whirlpool would be the center piece, you could make the house either a boat or a submarine, and pirates, the kraken, a breach, etc would be the rolls.

Notice that it is manually operated which means the house was built before electricity.
To answer your question at the end, yes Danny did scream “Zathura” at the end, but not like how the other movies have the characters call Jumanji’s name. What happened was Walter and Lisa were in shock that Danny won and Danny said “I beat Zathura!” So he just said the name in a sentence.

I felt bad for Kristen Stewart in this, to be honest. As you touched on, she didn't really have anything to do. She wasn't even really a character, but just a plot device when they needed her. The two primary examples were them needing someone to watch Danny & Walter to get the dad out of the house, and a way to bring the Zorgons back. With a couple of small tweaks to the script, she wouldn't have even needed to be in the movie. Personally, I would have preferred them tweaking the script the other way and had made her an actual character and more involved in the story.

This movie has my favorite Chekhov’s Gun in any movie: The piano. At the beginning the dad tells Danny “someday you’re gonna be really glad I got you that piano.” After the Tsouris-3 scene, the piano is leaning on the railing facing the stairs, and the payoff comes when Lisa pushes it on a zorgon saying “LISA… is upstairs!”
This movie is a great combination of classic films and you guys caught up on that too. Star Wars, jumanji, Jurassic park, alien, and terminator. probably many more and is a comedy action heartfelt and a lil scary. Even this is a kids movie from early y2k it’s a masterpiece to me

Didn’t realize this movie was that old! But I’m pretty sure my dad showed me this movie.. I always loved it and compared it to a “space jumanji” but never actually knew it was.
Also, I would give my left n…
To help write that script ! It sounds like an insane movie idea :)
If they ever came out with a third board game it needs 7 letters since the other two would contain the same ! 😝😅💜💜💜
I always recommended this one, it’s a classic and now I know how old I really am lmao
Thank you for covering this :)
I did hear Danny say "Zathura." BTW, I like your hair, Aaron.
Older Walter DID come out from a wormhole. Meaning he was truly from a different time line
"Jumansea." You're welcome!
My favorite movie as a kid!
my childhood movie
Absolutely need an iron giant reaction
Has anyone seen JUMANJI: THE ANIMATED SERIES?
It was dope
I watched it when waiting for “The Next Level” to come out. I’m thinking about watching the show again.
Nice retwist Aaron !🔥
This movie has my favorite Chekhov’s Gun in any movie:
The piano.
Kristen Stewarts character is similar to David Allen Griers character... Both not important but added a little more to the story
I love watching you guys react to movies. All you reel reject guys. You keep it family friendly which I appreciate.
Aaron and Andrew need to see Disturbia (2007). It’s a really good Shia LaBeouf movie. Since they both never seen it.
Definitely need a reaction to The iron giant, but also much more niche recs are *batteries not included and Aliens in the attic
Zathura and Jumanji were written by the same author
This movie is a great combination of classic films and you guys caught up on that too. Star Wars, jumanji, Jurassic park, alien, and terminator. probably many more and is a comedy action heartfelt and a lil scary. Even this is a kids movie from early y2k it’s a masterpiece to me
2:56 omg that book cover brought back memories of elementary school!
Hell yeah! Such a disregarded classic. Iron Giant next please
I COMPLETELY forgot that teenage Kristen Stewart was in this. Been sooo long since I've seen this film 😂
