This game is a HUGE pleasant surprise! It's roll'n'write maybe, but it's decisions all the way and a real wargame challenge! It's going to be a big Christmas hit so here's all the details you need! :)
Recently found your channel and just love the in depth reviews and playthroughs. On the strength of the last two I've ordered 'The Grass Crown' & 'Bismarck Solitaire'! Thanks for the fantastic presentation & attention to detail. Essential viewing!
Stumbled upon your channel! I saw the companion Waterloo bookgame the other day! These bookgames look fabulous & engaging solo play. A great detailed review! Thank you & Yule tidings!!
Great review as always, Solo! Another option I'll add for those who don't want to write directly in the book is to use an iPad/tablet if you have one. You can take a pic with the camera and just mark that up.
@@Demy1970 Take a picture of the page. If you have a photo editing app (there are free ones), you can import it and just start marking it up as you would the physical version. Best with Apple Pencil but you can use your fingers too.
Awesome overview! I saw this mentioned on a forum I visit and then remembered that your video was in my queue. Have you seen that there are a number of similar books available as well? ~ So what happens when your Bismarck was sunk? Is that game over and start again or do you just try the mission again? And if you sink the Hood is it out of the game in the next mission? I’m definitely thinking of picking this up, or one of the similar book games. Thanks for the great video!
Good question! Each game/mission is a full reset. All forces on each side start with all vessels. In this way, it is not a 'campaign'. I understand that other bookgames are out there and I'm sure they're worth exploring. This has been very successful so I think there's a big untapped market. I for one would love to learn more because it's such a fabulous format!
Are there other solitaire war game books that you recommend? I often go away mountain biking in my campervan and this book format is perfect for gaming hobby in the cramped space I enjoy whilst in the van in the evening
Appreciate the feedback again, thank you! I've not played others but there are some out there. The Fields of Normandy is one and there are a couple more in that series. You may find them on Amazon if you do a search, I'm sure I've come across them there.
Appreciate that Heth, thank you. The best part about this game is zero setup. Open the book and play. Very refreshing and just as much fun and challenge as many a bigger game!
Just ordered the game - great review and play through. Looking forward to playing it. Going to use zip enclosure sheet protectors I picked up from Staples store. They open up on the long side of the sheet. I assume the pages are 8.5x11 inches? Also have dry erase markers.
Someone on BGG mentioned tracing paper which is a good idea. I use those sheet protectors with an ultrafine dry erase marker like you said. That works well.
Which do you prefer bismarck solitaire or waterloo solitaire? I am a very casual solitaire gamer who prefers something "not too thinky" and around 30 mins max. Thanks!
Thank you for your comment! Difficult to choose, and it depends on your interest. Personally, prefer Bismarck a little more. But Waterloo plays just slightly quicker on average. But both games are approx 30 - 45 mins.
Hi thanks for taking a look! Yeh, that's what it's for and there are several copies of each difficulty level so you can do each one 3 times. And I use a 5B pencil which is very soft so easily erased if I ever do want to do that. Some people photocopy, others use an acetate so all options are there.
I completely agree with you, that echoes my approach. I'd get another too IF I used all the pages. I appreciate your feedback, thanks for having a look :)
Clip on a clear sheet of mylar or small plastic sheet- buy a small picture frame with a plastic photo cover. China markers/grease pencil come right off the plastic.
Or...slice open the long end of a page protector to cover over the page. China markers. Dry erase markers are okay, but way TOO EASY to accidently rub off.
@@charleslatora5750 Charles, yes, an old photo frame, we all have them somewhere! Great idea! And tracing paper? Not even heard that since I was a lad - sheer brilliance :) Thanks Charles, very interactive comments :)
And another one I'll order right away... you drive me poor! ;) But I find it a bit unfortunate that they use the rather horrid Amazon book printing (almost every single book printed by Amazon tends to wear out very soon, losing its plastic covering and generally feels very cheap). As the book itself isn't that cheap I would expect a better quality here. Anyway, still no reason not to order it. ;)
Thanks for looking in again sir! Interesting comment on Amazon printing, wasn't aware of that! I'll have to see how things pan out. I'm sure you'll enjoy your game and I'm sorry if I caused a run on your funds! Thanks again for your great feedback, appreciated! :)
So glad you pronounced Eugen correctly. I could not finish the review that continually said Prince Eugene.... You have a new follower.
I'll take that!👍 Really appreciate your support, thank you!

Your feedback has really made my day, thank you very much! Makes these videos worthwhile for me to do!
Fantastic review. Wonderful style. Clear and straightforward. No rambling and no nerve wrecking ummms, errrs or you know.
Very kind of you to comment, thanks very much for watching, it's appreciated! The game has proved much more enjoyable than I first thought :)

I'm glad you lke the bookgames, they are a great idea. And thank you for taking a look! :) Merry Christmas to you too! :)
thank you, great review! I clicked on the buy button, I blame you ;)

What a superb idea! I think thats the best yet! Thanks for having a look :)
Or use the image in Miro on your computer (or any white board app) if a tablet is too small for your old eyes (like mine)
How do you mark it up on the iPad?

Another great video, sir. I picked this up and may use the events mechanics in my Richthofen game. Always enjoy your videos.
Much more to this than I thought. Super video thanks!
Thanks again for dropping in, it's appreciated. Yes there's a lot of game in these pages :)

Haha! Its arriving today! So much for pumping the brakes on buying myself stuff for Christmas. This is probably it, though. Good video, as usual.
Brilliant, you'll enjoy it for sure! Thanks for viewing and for taking the time to comment!
Great review looks like a fantastic concept
Thanks for your time, its appreciated

Thanks Derek 👍😊
One of my sons gave me this game for Christmas. It's been a lot of fun.
The Bookgame idea is a brilliant one and it seems to be real popular rght now! Thank you for watching!
That sounds really good. Thanks for the video!
This is my favourite of the book games 👍
I'm going to use this to generate miniature scenarios with General Quarters 1 and 3.
Thank you for taking a look! And thats a great idea too 👍

Wait, you are writing in the book? - how can you replay the game? Easy to erase?

Great review and sample play. You sold me on the game!
In that case I'm really pleased, you'll have a great time playing! And thanks for taking a look :)
With this type of game I like that there is a history in the book of the games I have played. If I actually use every sheet I'll buy another one.
I completely agree with you, that echoes my approach. I'd get another too IF I used all the pages. I appreciate your feedback, thanks for having a look :)
Great review, and nice dice!
Thank you for having a look and for your kind comment. I think the dice were a bag of 12 dice from Amazon a couple of years ago :)
Fantastic, detailed review! 👌🏼

I might still have some 'ancient' tracing paper in the garage. Clip it on & SET SAIL!!!
