1990 C4 Corvette ZR-1 - Valet Key / Power Key! 0-70mph in Normal and Full Engine Power

- The power key in a C4 ZR-1 switches between 200ish hp and 375 hp. It is commonly called a valet key. In reality, Normal Power mode was meant to be used to pass emissions testing.
1990 is the only year the power key can be set and left at full engine power all the time.
1991-1995 you had to switch it on every time you started the car.
Always had a soft spot for the C4 ZR-1... The rite weather conditions, and shifting with your foot planted , they were easy 12 second cars! Late 80s early 90s that's hauling the mail!
Seriously never got why they get so much hate
@@isaacsrandomvideos667 because while it was a kickass engine , all the weight was up high cause ohc and on a track you'd notice it.
Still was the quickest one at the time though.
@@isaacsrandomvideos667 no reason, just idiots. It's the second longest running Corvette generation ever and the first one to see a "Supercar" version. There's a story of a guy who had one and for years had no idea that the car had 400hp ( drove it in "Normal" mode for more than a decade). Boy was he surprised when someone showed him what that key was for.
C4 looks cooler than the C5 don’t @ me
You might be right! 😁
I love the two options, normal and full. It should be good enough and full send.
LT5 glory. I just don’t think people realize how bad ass this thing was for an early 90s car. And then when they upped the power a little bit in 1991 this thing was a monster I still remember those 305 tires in the back.
Weren't they 315s? Regardless, massive meats out back.
Nice, I took my 1990 ZR-1 out this morning, my valet key never comes off full power. These cars are a blast to drive. The more I drive it the better it gets. 👍👍
Always was and always will be an icon.
What a cool car! This must've been to die for when it first came out.
My brother had a 91 when i was little. Remember him dropping me off at school thinking i was the coolest kid ever 😂
Good video Kyle. I’ll copy it when the snow melts.
Pure poetry in both modes!
Love these cars. Firebirds and corvettes are my favorite. I've got a 3.8 series II firebird that gets 12.6 quarter mile
Same here. I've got a 1984 L69 Trans Am 5-speed and a 1990 ZR-1! In the past I had a 1992 V8 Firebird and a 1995 3.4 Firebird which was my first car.
Wow 7k redline in an older v8 nice 👍
I love that if you click a key it says "full engine power" there's just something about that lol
I have to say, in my 90 ZR1, valet mode still feels pretty quick
That LT5 is sick!
Wow what a difference I hope can atleast drive a zr-1 one day
Great comparison!!
I think it would benefit from a slightly higher final drive too. Tall final makes for a pretty much one gear 0-60 but quarter mile and and track I think the higher final drive would beenfit the acceleration...
You are correct. 4.10s to replace the 3.45s are one of the most popular and best bang for your buck performance upgrades that can be done for the C4 ZR-1.
@@kylec4zr1 who did yours?
@@lukehelpmetakethisdangmaskoff I don’t have 4.10s. Original commenter was saying better gears would improve acceleration, and I agreed. I have the stock 3.45s.
However, I would have Haibeck do it, if I were going to.
@@kylec4zr1 He seems to be the authority.
@@lukehelpmetakethisdangmaskoff He’s been working on these cars exclusively for almost 20 years. His experience and knowledge of all nuances is priceless.
Had a ported RX4 a zillion years ago. No rocket, but I'd still disconnect the carbie's secondaries (by unhooking the vacuum plunger) before leaving it for any service.
That’s quite a difference in acceleration
Sounds sick I love the thumbnail displaying 69 mph
Sweet! 🙏🏻
Wow. No power past 5000 in Valet Mode. Need full power to get the most outta that 7k rev limit
There is a 1991 callaway just sitting in my city somewhere . I want too buy it so bad but those cars are expensive hopefully the person doesn't know and maybe I can buy it for cheap . Forged internals , twin turbos , put up the boost on it and it'll prolly get 450+hp
So sick.
Mine is purely for show now after deleting the secondaries.
Nice! 😎
Yep it'll do that...
👍
Help me to understand full power mode,so the engine is NA? also is it effecting the ignition so it moves distributour on advanced mode?
There are two sets of intake runners and fuel injectors, only half of them run in normal mode
@@keegenm.6154 thanks 👍
In drive by wire cars you can get a sprint booster which has a valet mode. Intercepts the throttle signal to throttle controller. Also unleashes some amazing drive ability and throttle response.
The original red key
Cool video. How does this work? Is it like an 8cyl engine and you’re running off 4 when you’re not on full power?
Not quite. There are primary and secondary fuel injectors, intake ports, and fuel pumps. Turning this key off shuts off 1 injector per cylinder and closes off the secondary intake ports. Still runs on 8 cylinders, except with less air and fuel, so it makes less power. Switches between like 200-ish hp and 375hp. Really cool technology for 1989.
@@kylec4zr1 nice, yeah that is rare
Each cylinder had 2 fuel injectors, 1 smaller and one larger. It’ll switch between the 2 is basically all you need to know
@@ryanrake2714 got it thx
Has anyone done a build on one of these engines?
Most definitely. Porting. Headers. Bore and stroke. Cams. Tune. 650-700hp naturally aspirated is not unheard of. These engines want to breathe.
@Kyle C4 ZR-1 they are one of my favorite engines, I've never seen one built before, now I know. Super nice ride man.

@Kyle C4 ZR-1 that is sick! These corvettes and the turbo buick are on my bucket list for cars to own.
Dumb question, but is that a manual trans? Cause if that’s an auto , that programming is defueling that thing pretty good for shifting like modern cars. I’m guessing that was not a thing back then but I’m just curious
Yes, it’s a manual. On upshifts I don’t engage the clutch again until the revs have dropped down to where they need to for the next gear. Minimizes clutch wear and you don’t get a big jolt in the driveline.
@@kylec4zr1 definitely some smooth shifting!
@@anthonys7534 you have to find what you prefer more or a sweet spot
Wait for the engine to drop to the right rpm and minimize clutch wear / slow shifts
A mix of both
Flat foot shifting, saves like a whole second but you're fucking up the trans and clutch lmao
The tach were not that accurate shows high. You needed to replace calibration resistor to get it to correctly read rpm’s
The tach is accurate and does not show high. Fuel cutoff is 7200rpm.
Complete diff
How does that work?
Simplest answer is there 2 injectors per cylinder.
Normal power Shuts off 1 injector per cylinder.
@@kylec4zr1 Super cool!!! Thank you!
It looks like the Pontiac engineers made gauges
looks the same
My V6 accord would definitely fusk it up
Your Honda Accord runs 12s in the 1/4mi ?
Sorry, I’m just going to go ahead and say it.
Unless it’s heavily modified, your Accord has no chance.
I owned an 8th gen honda accord v6, that wouldn't happen even on my best run down a hill lol. I can also see this car pulling away from my sonata 2.0t with a JB4, and it's definitely quicker than the V6 even if i were to stay on map 1.
Man, them old vetts was slow
Only with the power key off.
1989 and 375 HP ;___; wdym it's slow. With the full power it did 0-60 in like 5 seconds without even launching it
And yet it still holds multiple FIA world land speed endurance records for production cars. It’s not that slow
I guarantee it’s faster than your car
It's crazy how slow it feels in the video because of the tall gear ratios, when in reality it's not that slow and just that I'm used to shorter gear ratios and expect the top of 2nd to be like 50 or something.
