If the transmission grinds in fifth gear it's due to low on transmission fluid I had the same problem the last owner never changed the fluid 😊P.S. check the cluch fluid located under the brake cylinder
My GTO has the same tranny. She NEVER refuses to easily go into fifth gear! it should be like butter. I would suggest that you drain and change the trans oil to today's lubricants.. as well as a touch of an anti-foam agent to both your transmission and differential couldn't hurt.
Yes.. another way that the fifth gear is grinding may be because the clutch is not fully engaging. It could be either the clutch fluid is low OR the slave cylinder is getting weak.
My T-5 started grinding into 5th right after switching to synthetic ATF. Took a few changes back to conventional ATF to flush it out and fix the issue. Guess the syncros don't like synthetic.

This is an old video, but I’v successfully dealt with tired synchros in multiple cars by double shifting into those gears. Once you’ve synced the speed of the transmission input with the speed of the gear you’re trying to engage, it slides in like warm butter.
Hell Yeah! Brian got to drive the ZR-1 👍 Yeah that 5th gear synchro sounds no bueno. What fluid was put in the transmission?
