The big entrance doors in Cartagena are because people in the colonial times used to arrived with their horses, they could enter throught the gates and there's like lobbys to let the horses and then get to the interior of the house. Many of the houses have like an small square with water foints and trees. In your travel to Cartagena you missed to go the Rosario's Island (Islas del Rosario), when water is green and blue with white sand in their beaches, really Caribbean. You also missed a lot of spots in Medellin, but of course, 24 hours isn't enough to know a big city.
