  • Join me as I fix another jump box! Another Schumacher (I see a lot of those), this time the 1200 Peak Amp.
    For replacement batteries, use:
    Standard: amzn.to/42WDfSU
    Upgrade: amzn.to/49QJYjw
    Best: amzn.to/44n52fK
    I apologize for stepping away at 10:22. I was answering a coworker’s question. I return at 12:10. Thanks for bearing with me in my video making/learning process!

    my sj1289 has torx/allen screws, which are annoying to undo.. 22ah batteries cost about $47 now-- whereas pre covid probably about $35. It's still worth it, since a new jump starter of this type cost about $170 now and supply of them varies depending on time of year if you need to buy a new one. for those replacing 18ah batteries, the 20 or 22ah batteries will also be a direct fit-- just make sure the dimensions are the same... they should be. hopefully this will fix the psi inflator's inaccurate metering of the fill (is it related to a weak battery, bad circuit or hose?)

      Yes, they love their torx screws. Many times the size is T-15, often with the security dot in the center.
      $47 is a very good price for the 22Ah. Usually I see the 18Ah for $49.99, but that’s retail. Regardless, it definitely beats paying full price for a new one.
      As far as an inaccurate psi reading, it could be any of those things. Start with the battery, then check the hose for leaks, then, if possible to remove old meter and reattach new one, do that.

    Are those starting batteries? Or deep cycle batteries? Seems like starting a vehicle will kill a deep cycle pretty soon. Thanks for info!!!

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад +1

      It’s a deep cycle. In theory, a deep cycle should hold up better than a standard cranking battery since it is designed to be discharged. The thicker lead plates can take the abuse better. Though, I’m not sure how a box like this could be 1200 amps at it’s peak since these batteries typically deliver between 400-600 CCA on a load tester. Maybe something in the way the circuit board is arranged?
      Thanks for your comment!

      I have given your question a little more thought, and here’s my answer for you. Powersonic makes a PS battery that they call “general purpose”. That’s what I was using here. Technically, it is a deep cycle battery, while also being decent with cranking as well. Hence the label “general purpose”. They have a PDC line which is specifically for deep cycle as well a PHR line specifically designed for high cranking. I put in a PS-12180. If you want higher starting power, put in a PHR-12200. Same physical size battery, just more cranking power.
      Thanks again for watching.

    I have a unit that’s about 2 years old, but Ive only used it once or twice in that time, so it’s basically new; I’m using it again, but finding I only get 6 hours continuous usage from it. with a new battery, could I expect more usage time? thanks for the help.

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад

      Hey Chris, whether you use it or not, the battery will age and sulphate. It will sulphate significantly less if it’s kept fully charged, but if your unit has just been sitting around, I’m assuming it’s gone for more than 6 months at a time without being charged.
      A new battery should make it work like new.
      Just curious, when you say you get 6 hours use, what are you using it for?

      It depends where you are and what battery stores you have around you. Email me at duby4life@gmail.com and I can help you find something in your area of you’d like.

    Would replacing the 18ah battery with a 22ah throw off the charger or the level the unit thinks the battery is charged to? It seems to be a common swap as they make a 22ah the same size as OEM.

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад +2

      No, that would be an excellent swap. Be aware that some of the 22 Ah are specifically designed to provide more power, while some of them are designed to be better at deep cycling. For this application you would not need one designed for deep cycling, though, if that’s the only one you have available, you’re not going hurt your jump box if you use the deep cycle one. And it will still jump well.

    I pulled my battery out and put it on a charger only to find out my battery was good but the charger wasnt charging it. Big head ache. They are hard to work on.

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад +1

      @Scott and Cheryl freeone Sometimes it’s possible to charge the battery with an external source without taking the battery out. I’ve used about two dozen or so different boxes and haven’t experienced a problem by doing this: I’ll hook up my 1 amp maintainer to the clamps on the jump box. The red of the jump box to the red on the charger, and black to black. So far, I haven’t shorted or burned up any PC boards with this method.
      If you try this, you may have to double check the clamps on your jump box and charger. Some only supply power to one side of the clamps. Others run a small wire behind the hinge/spring of the clamp to take the power from one side to power the other. If you find you only have power on one side of your clamps, just make sure that side is in contact with the side that that has power of the other.

    Can we replace the lead acid battery with Lifepo4 ones?

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад +1

      Ultimately, I don’t see why you couldn’t. I’ve never tried it. The circuit board in the jump box may not get along with the built-in BMS in the LiFePO4. Also, it would be a very expensive replacement and I’m not sure you would be any better off with a LiFePO4 in there. The LiFePO4’s are ideal for deep cycling. In this application (unless you are solely using the jump box for the sake of the 120v AC port) you’re relying on a high amperage draw not deep cycling abilities.
      Bottom line: it might work, but unless you already have that battery sitting around and don’t know what to do with it, I don’t think it would best suit what a jump box is made to do: jump start vehicles.

    Hey where can I purchase the right power to use to charge my Schumacher?

    • @Duby4life
      @Duby4life  Год назад +1

      @Regi Cain if yours takes a barrel plug, you may have a hard time finding an exact fit replacement. With many of the Schumacher jump boxes, you can get a 1amp float charger with alligator clamps, clamp the red (+) of the float charger to the red of the jump box and the black (-) to the black of the jump box. In the same way you pull current out of the clamps of the jump box, you can put current in to charge it.
      One exception would be if the battery in your jump box has fallen too low (down to 7 or 8 Volts or less). Many chargers will not detect a battery and therefore will not charge it. NOCO chargers are good at detecting most batteries, even when they are very low in voltage.
      Hope that helps.
