CHINA: How did the Mongols take (then ultimately lose) China?

  • Perhaps the Mongols' greatest nemesis--at least as regards the difficulty of conquest--was Song China. It took many decades (and immense death by sword and famine) to finally capture Hangzhou. Then, less than a century later, the Mongols were booted out again. So how did they finally take the Song down--and then how did they lose their hard-won grip on the ultimate steppe peoples' prize?

    Thank you! So great to put Mao's genocide of 50 million Chinese and 1.2 million Tibetans into perspective. I didn't know the Mongols (Gengis and Kublai) were just as bad. Such a shame how innocent people always seem to suffer at the hands of the military of cruel dictators.

    Solid narration - with relevant highlights (e.g. 'sects').
    Great concept - talking to someone about the local history while traversing the very same landscape.
    I don't 'feel' the 'powerpoint sound effect' though...

      Actually, Manchurian conquered only western Mongolia. Most of Mongolia joined Manchurian to form an alliance. That alliance survived until 1905.
      If you talk about Manchurian Qing dynasty, significant portion of the army and the ruling family were Mongols.

    • @mingpoyang

      This is misreporting.
      Ming dynasty toppled Yuan (Mongol) Dynasty with Mongolia incorporated into China. Then Manchu Dynasty toppled Ming Dynasty with Mongolia still incorporated.
      Why should Republican Party when toppling Democrats in elections involve loss of State territories?

    Kublai's campaign against Song China also irreversibly damaged his healthy currency system and thus the economy as he had spammed too much paper money to pay for the war. The financial minister probably became the least desired job during Kublai's reign. Many of them ended up dead after they failed to turn the economy around.

      @@SmallTownResident I'm from Mongolia, and what u said is half correct and half wrong. Modern day Mongolia is a nation himself. China is buying territories from Mongolia from the corrupted Mongolian gouvernment, because China is getting out of source and is overpopulated. The whole world is Chinas biggest economic partner. China bought a lot of COUNTRIES in Africa! China is now the leading capitalistic country. You ask a chinese businessmen to make iPad, they will make it better and cheaper! But they wont last long. Made in China 'nuff said. Because China is living in a big luxury, they are absorbing the Mother Earth. Sea, rivers, mountains, lakes, ANIMALS are getting inxtinct or vanished. This is why Mongolia doesn't like China. Because it is just not fair. Afterall money wins in this world no matter your right or wrong.

    The Song could have beaten the Mongols in the south if they hadn't been beset by systemic political issues. They could have also outlasted the Mongol Empire in the areas where they couldn't beat them i.e north of the Yangtze River.

    The Mongols started to decline because they suffered THREE HUGE LOSES in Vietnam and TWICE in Korea by the hands of BRILLIANT Vietnamese generals.

    • @hwasiaqhan8923
      @hwasiaqhan8923 6 лет назад +7

      ToiYeuYAHWEH That’s bs, the mongols lost more battles and men in China than in Vietnam, the city of Xiangyang alone stood 7 years against countless mongol invasions. That didn’t weaken their empire?
      The reason why they lost was because chinese leaders revolted against Yuan, Zhu Yuanzhang the founder of the Ming dynasty was only one of the leaders of serval rebel armies.

  • @rh5340
    @rh5340 3 года назад

    Your explanation is so flawed. Chinese in ancient time have a totally different view about race and civilization. You are essentially using modern European standards to understand China.

    • @rh5340
      @rh5340 3 года назад

      the idea of Han and 'the middle kingdom' do not refer to a specific nation state. It is an inclusive and evolving civilization. Each time northern non-Han people invade the south, they will be sinicized, which means they adopt Han culture and become a part of the civilization. Mongols did it, the Jurchens did it (twice), the Khitan did it, the Xianbei did it. Han is not a race, it is too diverse, both genetically and culturally. Identifying oneself as a Han Chinese is a cultural expression that you declare yourself as a part of the Chinese civilization.
