Indian history books mainly focus on guptas, mauryas, Rajputs and the Marathas… then Delhi sultanate and the Mughals and the British… South Indian kingdoms barely make a paragraph if not “ did you know!? “ box. And I am South Indian… so yeah… barely learnt anything about my ancestors
To learn at a deep level you have to opt for higher education in history. Which more than half of South Indians have not read! You come here and complain. Including Islamophobics of another level. Those who studied it beyond school had to study these empires in depth. Also, those that studied them, did not call it boring subjects then. So, you don't get depth in school; you get to read all history in basics. School wasn't wrong your taste in learning has changed.
How come we never learned about this great king and his achievements in my school days. I studied in Chennai, and I remember that the great Chola kingdom was just a 12 lines paragraph in my history book that had individual chapters on Akbar, Babur, Aurengjeb, Gandhi, Nehru, Ashoka, WW1 and WW2. It is a shame how much our own history was nothing but a ignored text in the history books of our own country.

Amazing, Kulottunga Chola was a contemporary to Emperor Alexius who also saved the Byzantine Empire from Turkic and Norman invasions. Also a contemporary of William the Conqueror as well, I suppose the 11th century was just a time of great monarchs.
@@BrokeBillionare Please search with Kulothunga I - wikipedia give a details information about him and his Chola empire that includes many many northern Indian territories and South East Asian countries with many books and inscription references from both Chola and Chalukiya sides. Very interesting and illustrious emperor Kulothunga I was.
Chalukyas (even though they got split into two )kannada based Kings were never defeated(may be because of good brotherhood relation) the cholas went in other directions for conquering
I was fascinated to read about him. He inherited the throne from his mother's side but was a true chola. Very underrated Emperor and prevented the collapse of chola empire for another 100 years.
Technically he did not inherit from his mother. Since he was born resembling his late grandfather, he was adopted by his grandmother. He inherited the throne as the adopted son of his late grandfather, not as his grandson.

There is a Tamil literature work on the war between Kalinga and the Chola Empire witnessed and written by Jayamkondaar named "Kalingattuparani". The details are so intricate. Usually, "Parani" will be named after the defeated Kingdom and it will only be written for the one who neutralizes a 1000 elephant.
Is there an English translation available? I am currently reading English translation of Ponni's Selvan and loving it. Would love to read another Tamil epic.
Kalingattuparani is highly exaggerated poem. Kalinga retaliates it defeat on Kalinga and ganga dynasty captured chola territory . Raja ganga dev Even married daughter of kulotunga chola rajasundari. And the king mentioned in kalingattuparani was kalinga king anantavarman ChodaGanga dev. Who never fled from battle as written in kavya they just taken back their captured territory .
I wish. But I am from tamil nadu and I did not know about this. South Indian culture is absolutely neglected here in India. I do hope a lot of people get to learn about how great our ancestors were.

Excellent video on a much ignored, but historically important, south Indian monarch. I really think that you have one of the best youtube channels in English featuring people and events from Tamil / south Indian history. The imperial Cholas are little known outside of India although they constituted one of the great dynasties of the Indian subcontinent. Another period that would be wonderful to explore would be that of the Tamil Sangam Age (300BC-300AD). Little known is that in this period south Indian society was dominated by a warrior class with a fierce heroic culture and code of honour, and with colourful pre and post battle customs and rituals. The period saw the genesis of south Indian martial arts (Varma ati, silambam, kalarippayattu) and, like the Japanese samurai, there were even forms of martial suicide. Archaeology has also revealed that some sword blades used were made from unusually high quality steel. The Cholas, Pandyas and Cheras (and their various feudatories) were in frequent or incessant conflict, and many of the kings (such as Karikalan, Senguttuvan or Neduncheliyan) glorified through war poetry. There are many accessible books on Sangam Age heroic poetry, and on ancient Tamil society and history in general which give a vivid picture of the martial elite and their internecine cattle raiding and wars. I have myself done many years of research into the warfare of those times.

But it is important to remember that the movie Ponniyin Selvan (and the novel it is based on) take place in an earlier period of Chola rule during the reign of Sundara Chola. The younger son of the emperor, who is leading an army in Sri Lanka in the story, is the one who would later rule as Raja Raja Cholan or Ponniyin Selvan (son of the river Ponni). There were actually three Chalukya dynasties in South India (not to be confused with the Chaulukyas of Gujarat and Chalukyas of Lata), the first was the Badami Chalukya dynasty, which ruled from 543-753, before being subdued by the Rashtrakutas. The second was the Eastern Chalukya dynasty of Vengi, which ruled from 624-1102, and was originally a branch of the Badami Chalukyas before it was vassalized to the Rashtrakuta and later Chola Empire. the third was the Western Chalukya Empire of Kalyani, who originally feudatories to the Chalukyas, ruling from 973 to 1189, and is the empire that Vikramaditya VI here rules over.

Your Video on Kulothunga is interesting because it explains in detail about the wars Kulothunga had fought. In Tamil Nadu it is very often said that Kulotunga was brought from Chalukya Country to rule. It is also interesting that his mother was from Vengi Country which was ruled by earlier Cholas - the descendant of Karikala Cholan around 1Century CE. Also it is interesting to note that Vikramaditya who is considered a great Conqueror was subdued by Kulothunga. "It is also interesting that his mother was from Vengi Country" not mother, The father(Raja Raja Narendra, on whom my city is named Rajamahendravaram) is from vengi who married the chola princess.

To learn at a deep level you have to opt for higher education in history. Which more than half of South Indians have not read! You come here and complain. Including Islamophobics of another level. Those who studied it beyond school had to study these empires in depth. Also, those that studied them, did not call it boring subjects then. There is a Tamil literature work on the war between Kalinga and the Chola Empire witnessed and written by Jayamkondaar named "Kalingattuparani". The details are so intricate.

The younger son of the emperor, who is leading an army in Sri Lanka in the story, is the one who would later rule as Raja Raja Cholan or Ponniyin Selvan (son of the river Ponni). Both are central characters in the movie and novel and the whole plot of the novel is about the early days of Raja Raja Chola and a conspiracy to overthrow the Cholas.

Would be great if you could make a video on the Kalyani Chalukya Empire too. Their Imperial Capital at Kalyani (Basavakalyan) was said to be one of the largest and wealthiest cities in India at the time.

Wow, never would I have thought to know so much about the Cholas, if I hadn't come across it. Tamil history aficionados like me can also read Kalingapatturani/ defeat of Kalinga( it was written during the same duration and celebrates the hard-earned victory upon Kalinga, which was also a powerful kingdom in India at that time, mainly because of maritime trade). Also, a humble request as an Odia, please do a video dedicating to Rashtrakutas of Karnataka, Alupas of Tulu Nadu, Cheras of Kerala and our very own, Gajapati dynasty of Kalinga.

Tunga is still a family name you'll find in Andhra/Vengi territory. That's my half cent's worth contribution..
That's very interesting
@Mailman tunga is the name of a chalukyan river which flows western chalukyas to eastern chalukyas (vengi), they might have probably adopted the name or the Tamil language but geographically it is a Telugu-Kannada name.
Kula - Race. Tunga - Exalt. Kulotunga - One who exalts his race.
@Mailman oh, didn't know.
@Mailman I think there will be some marriage relationship between cholas and srilanka, so only their descendents using that name. I know about pandyas and cheras relationship with srilanka but never heard about cholas relationship with srilanka.
As a descendant of kalyani Chalukyas (western region Chalukyas), I was never a big fan of Chola empire. But more I learn about their history, I have to say they had some admirable individuals with achievements that shaped the world we live in today.
Every empire has some idiots and great kings

I had seen your Videos on Cholas which are very interesting. Cholas were indeed imperial and at the same time progressive as they thought about maritime prospects which none of the Indian Kings had thought. Tamil history talks much about Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola and of course about Kulotunga Chola also. But they are not much popular/publiscied. It's believed that Kulotunga directly involved in the second conquest of Kedah after his grand uncle Rajendra Chola. If your videos are based on references of rock edicts or some travel notes, it would be authentic. 👏👏
