Here's few things about kernel level anticheats:
    1. While what was said in the article is true, those kind of malicious actions can be detected by antivirus and preemptively intercepted. Kernel level anticheats are on a much deeper level, where they give zero fucks about antivirus, because anticheat simply has higher priority on your system.
    2. One of the points against Vanguard is that it is always running since boot. Other anticheats launch with the start of the game.
    3. Those anticheats can be another exploitation vector if someone hacked your pc, check "genshin anticheat exploit". It was used to disable antivirus on the system.
    4. In order to work on the CPU without TPM 2.0, Vanguard requires disabling kernel virtualization, which is an important Windows security mechanism.

Hi! Programmer here. Running anything on Kernel level can expose vulnerabilities in your computer to outside resources. The concern isn't Riot stealing your data, it is other people exploiting vanguard and other anticheat to access you machine for nefarious purposes.
Also, kernel level anti-cheat mostly kills the possibility for any modding, such as customs skins, and I've been hearing about cases where having any modding software in your computer, even if not actively in use, can cause a false positive and get your account banned. Generally Kernel level Anti-Cheat doesn't affect every day users, but people such as modders and programmers can get unfairly flagged because of this.
Lastly, if I'm not mistanken, Kernel Level anti-cheat isn't even necessarily the most effective way to stop cheating, and there already exist ways to work around for this kind of cheating (which I will not name here).

@@minhminh-wp5lg The problem is not the client being compromised and some hacker stealing some of your Data. Annoying but not immediately problematic and than just about any program is at risk. The problem is that if a malicious actor gets access to your kernel level you are just fucked. Like kernel access means he gets more rights than even an Administrator would have and from nuking your whole system and holding it for ransom or even installing a different virus to spread to everyone in your network to literally making your pc completely and utterly unusable that you have no choice but to buy a complete new one they can do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. No exception made. The problem was never the anti cheat and having to install another Programm from Riot but the kernel level access for a Programm that wants to run 24/7 is just... ridiculous. Kernel level anti cheat is also already easily bypassed by many cheat makers, just gonna be a while until LoL cheaters and scripters get their hand on something new to bypass it.
It's kind of unavoidable in the current gaming word to not have some kind of kernel level anti cheat installed with how many games use them but NONE, not a single one, demands to run 24/7, even while not even playing the game.

@@minhminh-wp5lg The problem was NEVER to have to install another program from Riot that may be compromised. The problem is it is a KERNEL LEVEL program that wants to run 24/7!!!!!
If an malicious actor gets access to the client they can access my data and do some stuff not requiring admin permits but the damage they can do is limited unless they find another spot in the system to exploit. When they get access by compromising Vanguard well... then all safety barriers have already been bypassed and they can do WHATEVER they want with the system, as kernel level is just about the most rights a program can get. Their imagination is the limit.
Use your system to spread malicious software through the Network nothing easier than that? Encode your whole Drive and hold the PC and Data for Ransom? Well something with Admin access can do that already but there are ways to salvage that situation sometimes. On Kernel level? Nah you are fucked.
Nuke your whole PC including OS, BIAS and drivers to heaven comes making your pc and every Single part inside completely unusable by bricking the firmware.
Admittingly, avoiding kernel level anti cheat is near impossible in the current gaming world, seeing how many games use them but Vanguard is worse than just about any of them by wanting to run 24/7 from boot because that means your system is at risk not just while you play the game but 24/7 while the program is running.
Not to mention, kernel level anti cheat has already been proven to not be enough to stop cheaters. They have found ways around it in Valorant and other games and they will find ways around it in League. Just a matter of time really.....
The benefits of delaying the scripters temporarily is just minuscule compared to the risk Vanguard poses to the whole player base.

I actually researched the effectiveness not long ago for a school project and while cheating is possible in valorant (the other game with Vanguard anti cheat) according to cheaters themselves it *is* significantly harder to create cheats for it and they last for a significantly shorter period of time (aka you buy a cheat and it'll maybe last you a day if not less. Although there are different promised lengths for some cheats) so it becomes much more expensive for those who do want to cheat. So yes, cheating is not impossible. But it is a lot harder to do and it is a lot less of an issue as a result. I hope that league's implementation will be as successful

The thing is not in itself that the anti-cheat is kernel-level thus giving it access to everything on your PC. The problem is that now in addition to relying on Microsoft/Nvidia/AMD/etc. not being compromised and building software without vulnerabilities (that have years of experience being targeted) you now have Riot - a Chinese owned company with a recent history of being compromised and having bugs all over league of legends. You can't "antivirus" a kernel level program, you just trust the company not to have 0 day exploits or malicious intent.

Vanguard might not be the first Kernel level anticheat, but unlike others it's running the whole time on the background and you have to manually turn it off and then restart your PC again if you want to play the game once again. Other anticheats are automatically turned off as soon as you exit the game. Kernel based anticheats which are used properly are the current future of anticheats and therefore it should be used. These anticheats are more realible, precise and quick.
I don't mind when the anticheat on any level is running in the background while I'm playing my game, as I have nothing to hide from the devs. On the other hand I don't like the idea of it running in the background the whole time. Firstly, it will at least slightly impact the performance of your computer and secondly I just don't like the idea of some program running beyond my control and sight the whole time.

So even if some theoretical evil game devs were stealing your data, they don't have to have any good reason for it, it can be simply to make a quick buck on the side. So, Vanguard is pretty much useless as a anti-cheat mechanism, they know it too and that's the reason why ever time someone points out the program's fault's on their official Reedit page it gets deleted. But thanks to it's kernel-level access, it is a very good program for getting everything important from a device and making said device even more vulnerable to exploit for hackers and such. Anyone who knows that Riot games will going to look at everything on your computer(because they will), will just simply stop playing anymore, so that is some amount of players. Not to mention they updated LoL's system requirements so a lot of people who don't have windows 10 and above will not be able to play, and that's a good amount of people.
And about the part that a program doesn't require kernel-level driver to steal your info... that's somewhat true, most of the time it requires for you to agree to run said program as an administrator and such. Most of the time you can check a programs license too for validation.
Also, I love how the article said that it's the Developers who don't need your info... because sure they are the "problem" lol, yeah let's ignore that said developers work under a company that DOES want more info about you.

The real problem with a kernel level anti-cheat is that if theres a vulnerability in the software you are fucked. While you may not expect Riot to be malicious, the same cannot be said for anyone with knowledge of these vulnerabilities. You wont even have permissions to modify or remove the anti-cheat without significant knowledge, and if the vulnerability is bad enough you may never be able to remove it even with knowledge of how. Once you give a software access to read/write memory indiscriminately they've already hit a hackers end-game, they can do *LITERALLY* anything they want to with your system at that point.

Please Necrit, first of all comparing Vanguard to other anti-cheats is disingenuous, other anti cheats shut down after you close the game drastically reducing the risks associated with kernel level access, Vanguard runs on your PC the whole time unless it's uninstalled and the PC is restarted. And no you can't just disable it even after the updated version, Vaguard still behaves similarly as the old one, the difference is that it turns on whenever it feels like even after you chose to disable it in the options.
Secondly, the "risks" people are talking about have nothing to do with developers possibly stealing your data, most people don't care about big developers stealing your data, the issue has more to do with possible foul play from a third party whenever Riot security is breached because with kernel access you can do much more than steal somebody's data, your whole PC is at risk. Yes, there's still risks associated with other anti cheats but the risks are significantly lower than from an anti cheat that runs 24/7, Vanguard is like leaving the door of your house unlocked 24/7 instead of only when you play games.
Please make more research on the topic because a lot of the things you say sounds like damage control and regurgitating what other say, instead of relying on articles you should check how Vanguard behaves yourself with CMD, TCPView or similar programs. This isn't a conspiracy it's something you can research and check for yourself in few minutes.

The US government requires windows to give them a backdoor to all your information on your PC, your internet provider must also provide such data to the US government. The patriot act legalized 24/7 monitoring of citizens, this was 17 years ago buddy. You clearly don't actually care about this, otherwise you wouldn't be typing on youtube

Well the bug with placing ppl way higher than they were supposed to be into gold or plat may explain why I was 100% convinced about bots in my games a while ago. Happened 3 times. 1 yuumi, 1 lulu (both as my sup) and 1 evelyn.
