    Kind of a shame that whenever Leviathan and Behemoth get mentioned, people rarely mention Ziz, the massive flying creature that dominated the air and completed a trifecta of sorts. It's not as widely known as the more famous Leviathan and Behemoth, and as a result, doesn't get as talked about. But when you find out about it, it makes discussing these giant legendary creatures even more interesting.

      Where is Ziz in any biblical books? I haven't come across it yet, this is the first time I've heard of it. I have many biblical books, but I haven't read everything yet.

    • @wyvern0m3g42
      @wyvern0m3g42 2 года назад +17

      @@cindyledbetter2228 If my memory serves, Ziz isn't found in the Bible, or in any of the modern and mainstream variants of it for that matter. While I'm not entirely certain where exactly it is mentioned, I have a gut feeling it may either be in the Torah/Talmud(?) or could be a part of a more esoteric Jewish book. Sadly, since I haven't looked into Ziz very often and have gone so long without thinking of it, all I can really recall about it is its name and the fact it tends to be a forgotten and obscure third giant creature in Judeo-Christian lore. Chances are I could be wrong about a lot of this, but I'm hoping there's some truth here and there, so that if anyone wants to do the research, they can be pointed in the right direction to start.

      Exactly! It’s probably because creatures from the sea were more easily seen and link to bible verses. (Imagine seeing a whale for the first time for ancient man)
      On land we see large animals and the term Behemoth became synonymous with anything large, like mammoth is now. (Mammoth originally meant ‘earth mole’)
      And as time went by dragons, could by described as large land monsters, large sea serpents and flying fire breathers. So, they took their place I guess.

    I like to think that the Leviathan was a creature so massive and vast, that possibly all the different depictions of her may all be true, it’s just she’s too big for us humans to truly comprehend. Much like how an ant would have trouble comprehending us. Now on the matter of her being truly evil or not, I honestly think it’s more complicated. How can we truly understand a primordial creature of the ancient ocean, let alone assume it follows our understanding of morality?

      Leviathan I think is probably able to be compared with Cthulu in the sense that they can only be described generally due to them being a beast beyond our understanding. A creature stronger than humanity could ever hope to be is a very powerful creature and we have no real certainty on what it actually is other than the fact it's a sea dragon thingy which is a pretty vague description for a time where dragons could be anything really. @@blaxpoitation8528

  • @schizoidboy
    @schizoidboy 2 года назад +229

    It sounds to me like the Leviathan suffers from the same affliction all folklore and mythological creatures suffer from. Whoever writes about them adds something or takes something away from them. Think of any monster we have now, the vampire or the werewolf for instance often have something changed about them depending on the culture or whoever is writing about them. For instance the werewolf could be subdued by a cross or some other holy instrument, but that has dropped by the wayside. In the past the werewolf could come out at all hours, but then the movies came along and they only came out at the full moon, and silver bullets could kill them and not much else - which isn't always the case. Even in the Bible which the writers might be drawing upon several different sources is going to be having the same problems with their monsters.

    • @corbin_4738
      @corbin_4738 2 года назад +23

      One way to look at the resistance to holy immunity could be explained by today's culture. It takes *real* something truly holy to harm them. But who is definitely holy? What hasn't been tainted? As in the rewriting of the monster, so much as been rewritten in religion in hopes of placating and converting others. Does the symbol of the Flying Spaghetti Monster count as holy? Or only the cross - and if so, does it have to be baptized (or created) by a truly holy person in a truly holy church with absolutely holy faith?
      I do agree with what you say. The inconsistencies ruin most any monster.

    • @jeffbrownstain
      @jeffbrownstain 2 года назад +16

      Or perhaps different cultures have called different things by a similar name.
      What else can a 'primitive' people call a giant monster besides 'giant monster'?
      Modern interpretations aside here, obviously we all know that pop culture has destroyed all real culture at this point.
      We combine everything we know about, for my particular point here, 'Zombies', under one category and modern views of them take from everywhere to create new forms of them.
      But a Haitian zombie is a much different beast from a modern infection-based zombie or a risen undead from other myths or pop culture. At this point though, we call most living-dead things zombies.
      The same is true of *every modern reinterpretation of ancient-ish myths.

    For so many cultures to have conjured up a gargantuan sea monster in their respective folklore, one can't help but wonder if it were indeed inspired by a long extinct species of sea creature, like how many also believe the Loch Ness Monster to be in fact a Plesiosaurus. Now I'm no expert on Plesiosauri and I definitely won't claim that they specifically were so widely spread that they appeared all over the world to inspire everybody's respective sea-demon, but I do think that some of the aquatic creatures we commonly associate with what we call dinosaurs (or at least their descendants) were still present in the days of early human civilizations and the classical period.

      Fun fact, many iterations of the leviathan, such as the biblical version, describe the leviathan as a fire breathing entity. What makes this fun, is the fact that relatively recently (a few years ago), the skull of a massive crocodilian creature was found, and it's nostrils had scorch marks on the inside, as though it had extreme heat either being breathed in (which would have caused scorching else where on the skull), or being breathed out. • @limeangelo6019
      @limeangelo6019 Год назад +2

      At some point in most regions devastating flood is bound to happen, i would imagine "a flood but like, bigger" would be a pretty reasonable depiction of the end of the world, especially if you watch your entire village be ravaged by one, as your house and livestock get swiped away by the waters.
      Considering the ice age was a thing, it could very well have something to do with sea levels, although so far iirc we havent found enough evidence to support this theory but who knows?
      thats my take on it at least, i have the Occam's Razor take on this one.

    It seems to me that the leviathan was originally a crocodile. I think there's a line in Job that talks about it dragging itself through the mud, which rules out it being a whale (alongside the repeated descriptions of scales). The beasts in that book describe African megafauna fairly well, excluding the obvious embellishments, such as the behemoth being an elephant and the unicorn being a rhino. The dragon St. George was supposed to have slain was likely a Nile monitor in North Africa, and some of the earliest depictions show it as literally a giant lizard. It's easy to make a monster out of an animal that just about nobody in your region is familiar with, or just as well, exaggerating based on fear or ego. Imaging what kind of monster they would've created if someone came from the north and tried to describe a bear they encountered.

    I've always felt demons were more of an internal struggle, not physical manifestations. They could have physical form I suppose, but it seems more like the 'demon of Envy' is a reference to the voice/feeling that drives on to be envious. Likely because more harm than good comes from envy. The same goes for Lust, Greed, etc. It's always an emotional feeling that leads a person to lusting or being greedy. That need to put other things secondary in life, perhaps even the Lord Himself, for the sake of a dollar or a night of passion.
