  • A historically sweet moment from the Disney Legends ceremony in 1991! (Yeah, my first birthday!) ^_^
Just so you know, I was fortunate enough to save this footage before it got taken down a couple of years ago. I also added an extra surprise at the end! ;)

I remember the first time Sterling walked into the Baskin-Robbins I was managing in Laguna Beach. My back was turned when he ordered his ice cream from another employee. I whipped around and said "Sterling Holloway!". He was so impressed I knew who he was, he gave me his autograph and returned later with his Rolls Royce, I had admired earlier, washed and waxed & he gave me a ride home! I got a ride back to get my car because there was no way I wasn't going to get to ride home in a Rolls with Sterling Holloway! He was a nice man that was very humble about his fame & wealth. I'll never forget that meeting. Nice to see him get honored.

Growing up in the 90's, I got to a point where I was getting sick of Jim Cummings - invariably, his voice would be recognisable as it appeared in almost every cartoon produced in the era. There was always a "Darkwing Duck" quality behind most of his voices... But taking on the role of both Pooh & Tigger have got to be his greatest roles in my opinion, as he sounds so much like the originals and the least like himself, something that must be incredibly difficult to achieve.

I feel the same way about Cummings, often why he works better voicing his own original roles rather than as a soundalike, he has a very recognisable voice. Even with Tigger I instantly noticed he'd suddenly took on Peg Leg Pete's voice whenever it switched from Paul Winchell to Cummings. Pooh is the key exception, he just sounds so one of a kind compared to Cummings' other stuff. I do admit however I miss that mellow Southern drawl exclusive to Holloway's version. I guess since that was basically his natural speaking voice, it was far easier for him.
Sterling Holloway actually auditioned for the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh TV series before they decided his voice was too aged to replicate Pooh anymore (he does sound a bit hoarse here, though still recognisable). Who knows how differently Cummings' career might have went if they hadn't.

I know because if he did, he would’ve taught Jim how to sound like Pooh by alternating with him for The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. After the New Eeyore episode, Sterling Holloway would’ve passed the Pooh torch and the voice to Jim Cummings and said Jim I want you to take care of my little friend for me.
