    This week’s questions:
    1. I may be going to my first NOIR CITY this March in L.A. Any advice on noir tours, stores, sights? Or any videos or books etc. that you know of for L.A. noir visitors?
    -Dave from Tallahassee
    2. Could you tell me which method of execution was really used in California in the film noir time periods?
    -Arlene
    3. What do you think of what has been called Nordic Noir, especially the Swedish-Danish series “The Bridge”
    -Mike
    4. Although filmmakers had to work within the boundaries set by the authoritarian Salazar regime, did any film noir emerge from Portugal in the 40s through the 60s? What about Franco's Spain in the same period?
    -Duncan, Ventura
    5. While the work of well-known composers of film noir scores is available on CD, it seems the only way you can listen to all the rest is to watch the movie itself. Are you aware of any sources, such as university collections, libraries or museums, one could turn to research this otherwise lost music?
    -John from Bethesda, Maryland
    6. Of all the films that you have considered showing in such venues, is there at least one that is available, but for some reason you have never shown. Whether it is a good film or not.
    -Ken, from Oklahoma
    7. I am hoping you can have a screening of “Johnny Dark” with Piper Laurie and Tony Curtis. I have never seen the movie, but I presume it’s noir?
    -Christine
    8. Are there any plans for High-Definition restorations of either “Nora Prentiss” or “The Unfaithful?” -Brian, Casper WY
    9. “Act of Violence” is on my top ten list. Any plans for releasing a Blu-ray of this great film?
    -Michael E.
    10. I have not been able to find a good, digitized copy of “D.O.A.” Is there one? And If not, why is that?
    -Robert
    11. In old movies when two people kiss on screen, why do you never hear the smooch? It always looks and sounds like a very chaste “press” of lips.
    -David, Carmel Valley CA
    12. Curious to know if anyone has ever done a careful analysis of the lipstick that is applied beyond the edges of the lips, in terms of the good girl/bad girl values being expressed
    -Eric

'Tis Tizzy! I am going to my first NOIR CITY Hollywood '24!! So excited & the first question is spot on for me. Train to LA Union Station, Dash bus to Hollywood, 2 films, then an English afternoon tea at wonderful Chado Tea Room (need reservations online) right across the street from Egyptian, meeting Eddie- wow. Now I'll add Larry Edmunds Books. 🥳

Anne, I believe the movie with Caroll Baker playing a mute is Knife of Ice 1972. DIrected by Unberto Lenzi, it had me going til the end. Really fun giallo!

Great show. Eddie’s impression of early Michel Legrand @27:21 needs to be your lead-in background music. Regarding musical scores, I’ve often wondered why boutique film distributors like Criterion, Kino Lorber, Arrow et al., don’t include the musical score of noteworthy composers, as a supplement drop-down on their releases. For example, the Criterion box set of Fellini would have been even more wonderful had it included all of Nino Rota’s wonderful music. The digital size of a soundtrack is very small, so there’s certainly enough room. I’m thinking composers like: Rota, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini and Maurice Jarre. Not to mention more current composers like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplait , Danny Elfman and Alberto Iglesias. Seems to me like a missed opportunity.

I agree that it’s a missed opportunity. Unfortunately it involves more money being spent. That’s why major studio disc releases stopped including separate music tracks fairly early on. Unfortunate indeed.

I wasn't expecting the Eddie Muller '70s Jazz Funk Skat break - love it!

Also, speaking of Jean Louis Trintignant, he’s in another Carroll Baker giallo called So Sweet, So Perverse. Might interest Anne. I think it’s also on Shudder.

Just read on Imdb that Mitchum denied the Hepburn story on the Dick Cavett show and that he and Hepburn got along fine. With 120 minutes Undercurrent is way too long, Mitchum is miscast as sensitivite lover and Hepburn is no convincing woman in peril.

Hollywood Heritage Museum is cool. Been to a couple events there. Sadly missed the one with TCM hosts, including an unadvertised Eddie Muller appearance which I saw from pictures posted online.

Also, the one where Baker plays a mute is called Knife of Ice. The race car driver movie is A Quiet Place to Kill.

Calling all noiristas! What Cornell Woolrich stories should I read after " Night Has a Thousand Eyes"? Eddie & Anne convinced me to give him a try, finally. It is stupendous! Please advise -

I saw Undercurrent on the Criterion Channel a few months ago and you're both right. It's terrible.

Clinton Duffy, the warden of San Quentin prison wrote a very good book on capital punishment and his experiences/observations, since he presided over 101 executions until he retired in the late 1950s. He said in California, they started using the gas chamber in 1937, but if an inmate had been previously sentenced to execution by hanging, execution would still be carried out as sentenced. The last hanging in 1942.
Duffy's book has a lot of insights, including his reasons why he was against capital punishment, but did his duty as warden.

How fascinating & sad. 1942 last hanging in CA! Ten years before I was born. Lasted too long 😢

All those Carroll Baker movies you are referring to are her collabs with Lenzi. Which leads me to think your interest lies with early giallo, Anne. Aka sexy giallo. You might like The Sweet Body of Deborah.

While I get that Warner Brothers doesn't want to sink money into a restoration that will probably not be a great return on investment for them, I don't understand the business angle to not licensing out titles to places like Kino. Is there a financial downside to that? Disney is letting Sony do work for them and as mentioned, Universal let's Kino...what am 8 missing?
