Hi by any chance do u sell oyster spawn mushroom?
Hey Tony you can use a solar panel system for best economy in long term of bussiness instead of gas may caught a fire
Good job bro keep it up
I love you tutorials. I will post you the results of my own project after watching most of your videos❤❤🎉
Finding a channel like this is dangerous at night because I want to watch every video you have
Lol, I'm here replying you at three
Your propane barel burner & pasteurisation technique is very inspiring
Its better to only poke a few holes at the top for fresh air exchange then later after full consolidation poke the holes for fruiting.
as always, really good videos , u can add a water valve to the barrel, to drain the water so that u don’t have to lift all that heavy wet straw
I've not grown mushrooms in a while(I'm about to get back into it as I have a yearning for some oysters and enokis) but what I started doing was cleaning the underside of my lawnmower really well and then putting all of my straw in a place where it wouldn't easily mix with any grass(though I never had any issue with the grass), and then run over it several times with it on the "mulch" setting so it wouldn't blow the straw everywhere.
Hello Tony, I am very grateful to you for this useful information with figures and very clearly explained. I live in the Netherlands and I want to start with a mushroom nursery this information and the way you work has helped me a lot thanks.
"Now you can use a knife for this, or whatever you want. I like to use an ARROWHEAD!!" 😂😂😂 Legend
definitely one of the top 'tips' in this vid :D
I'm gonna trying nuking some holes when I try this.
Your presentation is everything.
So, awhile back I watched this girl show how to prepare straw/ hay bails to grow plants, she fertilized the bail with a moderately strong dose of pellets and watered it and let it heat up, being careful not to let it catch on fire and wetting it down every day and after a week or so it cooled. When she finally showed the bail...I swear to god it had Magic Mushrooms growing all over it (I dont think she new what she had) . So later on this coming spring and summer I'm hitting my local feed store to buy a couple of bails and I might pick up some natural cow patties and some sweet oat grain for my horse because I haven't had any P. Cubensis in 10 yrs and I need a vacation from life. I am not going to use any special methods, I'm going to keep them moist and see if anything happens.
Had success? If not, I can give you my burner email and help you out my dude.
Lazy man. Why not make the magic spawn yourself, up your ante. Hah.
I like the way you weigh the straw, which makes each log a known quantity with spawn ratio. Yes, it is better to have a higher spawn ratio, the faster the mushroom mycelium colonises the less chance of contamination, all factors we seem to have to experience as we learn. There are optimum ways and less than optimum. You have this down to a fine technique 😁 thanks again.
Thanks for watching! High spawn ratio is definitely not as efficient economically, but can be helpful for small scale growers to minimize the chances of contamination as you said.
Question: why put the inoculated straw in a long plastic bag that you have to cut holes into? I've never seen anyone do it, but I've been considering using plastic netting. Already has many fruiting holes and since it's not ripped up, it's reusable after cleaning it. Any input is appreciated, I hate to waste money if it wouldn't work. Thank you! Edit: I know the solid bag is to keep contamination out while the mycelium grows through the substrate, but if you're ripping air holes in the bag during inoculation, I don't see why one couldn't put the sterilized hay in a plastic netting bag which is then put in your normal grow bag. Don't rip holes and once it's inoculated remove the solid bag so it's only the plastic netting holding it together, and it'll be ready to fruit out the netting holes. That's my idea, is it flawed?
What you describe works, but the amount of ventilation the net bags allow means you'll have to really dial up the humidity with either an evaporative cooler in the summer or a humidifying fogger. It's extra money spent on equipment and energy.
Exactly the way I do it, big bags, that onions come in, perfect for straw, spawn sub, hang and let the shrooms, eat and in no time a big bag of shrooms 😎 Leaf mulcher. For chewing up leafs, chews straw as well, way easier, work smarter not harder.
My spawn grain must be trash. It looks just like regular dried out grain. Yours looks moist and alive.
Eugen Krause it could be, but it depends some times when the spawn is well broken up it can look like regular grain.
ahw the soundtrack got me so damn sold - disco con tutti
Thank you so much for all the great content you created. I found it very useful. Keep it up, you're doing great!
Great tutorial!
the French monks use the used straw out of horse stables. commercial button mushrooms are done the same way with horse poop. need to add some kind of food for them.
Pasteurization is making the substrate cleaner. 3 or 4 bricks of coco coir and a pot of hot water and you're good to go. Or, you can try dry straw and hot water?
you are great, thank you for your videos!
thanks to YOU for watching!
It seems there are two camps of mushroom growers, growers who generally pasteurize like you, and those growers who pressure cook the sealed bags. Is the second method an overkill in your opinion?
Depends on the substrate. High nutrition substrates like grain supplemented sawdust need sterilization. Low nutrition substrates benefit more from pasteurization than sterilization
What he said. Is true.
nice glasses, u look like the james bond of mushroom cultivation
Thank for the training.mr OLUDOJA
Excellent ,well thought out video. I do believe you covered all the bases in your presentation and obviously it works for you. I will subscribe to your channel. Good Luck going forward and thank you.
You seem reasonably intelligent. Hard to believe you didn't show the temperatures in Fahrenheit. 65-82c = 149-179F.
I'm happy more people see the benefits in going Celsius and metrical.
You don't sound reasonably intelligent.
They are Canadian. We use metric and °C here.
very informative good luck on your channel.
Thanks!
Amazing. This is what I was looking for. Keep it up.
This fuze intro was crazy
For heating the straw, when do you start the timer - when the water reaches 62-80 or when the centre of the straw reaches 62-80 degrees.
Probably the center so it's to temp all the way thru
@FreshCap Mushrooms, what should the temperature and humidity be at well your inoculating your straw logs?
Can you grow golden teachers on straw
Yesss...
Manure is still the best tho. Home mycology has some really good vids on this
1:58 that’s hardware cloth, not chicken wire - though chicken wire would probably work just as well. By the way, if you have any rural areas near by, you can get bales of hay for $5 usually. Or if you want to go big, a large half ton bale for $60. It’s usually quite a bit more expensive from feed stores, just buy from farmers.
Wao this is amazing stuff!! Thanks bro...
Thanks for showing i hope i can make one soon.
How long did you leave the pasteurized straw to dry on the table
Alcohol on table but outdoors? I'm confused
Hi sir, where i can buy spawn that you used in your video? Is it available online? Do you conduct training or seminar in mushroom production? Thanks .
have you ever tried to inoculate the straw with liquid culture inn a garden bed?
Which one more effective for straw substrate, pasteurization with hydrated lime or boil the straw?
Two two cents...
Hedge trimmers & Cold pasturization
I have shiitake mushroom rye grain spawn that I want to inoculate oak log totems with- but I first want to expand my grain spawn to hardwood sawdust before inoculating the totems. Can I do the same pasteurization process in your video, but using hardwood pellets/sawdust without issues/worries of contamination? I love your channel, very inspiring!
Hey there glad you like the videos! I hope to make many more soon... yes, you can add grain spawn to sterilized hardwood dowels to make dowel spawn. Similar process, just soak the dowels overnight, drain, sterilize ( probably only need to sterilize for 30-45 minutes) and then inoculate with grain spawn. I will have a video and an article about this soon, but it is pretty straight forward. I use 3/8" hardwood dowels.
Thanks for the quick response -Instead of the dowel method on smaller logs(4-6”) I’m interested in doing larger log totems (12-18”) - with that said can i pasteurize a large quantity of sawdust similar to how you pasteurized the straw vs sterilizing blocks of sawdust? I’m a little confused of when sterilizing vs pasteurizing is necessary.
Probably will work, as long as there is no supplementation to the sawdust.Generally sterilizing is necessary for ultra-nutritious substrates (like grain for grain spawn or supplemented sawdust blocks) Plain 'ol sawdust can probably just be pasteurized. I have done it before with Blue Oyster and it was perfectly good. No guarantees though :)
FreshCap Mushrooms thanks for the great feed back- I have plenty of spawn to experiment with. I’ll let you know the results 👌🏻
Which one work best, cold water pasteurization or hot water pasteurization?
Wanna try growing mushrooms at home
Please make video on how to grow button mushroom
U'r a genius
most growers are using bags and not putting holes in it before fruting. Why here are holes going in before fruiting. Do those holes increase contamination? What is the weight of the starw log when you are done packing it?
Cool video. Do we need to water the mushroom?
7:58 while cutting these holes, should we not be worried that contamination might pass through the same holes?
Would you recommend using a DIY filter instead of cutting holes in the bag? I feel there's a very high chance of contamination during the first stages of colonization with the median being so exposed. Does a straw substrate have a higher resistance to contamination?
Always that one who knows better than an expert. 😌
Beneficial microbes prevent the straw from contaminating as it is 'pasteurized' and not sterilized.
mycelium produces antibodies as it's growing to a bulk substrate
I tried to go some mushrooms on some straw, but the mycelium doesn't seem to take to the straw, the mycelium has expanded well off the spawn but won't really touch the straw, I think it is because the straw was too wet when I closed up the bag, the info I got in the kit said poor out the water after pasteurization for an hour then add the spawn but I don't think that was enough time.
Hi! Great video. I was wondering though, as I have an autoclave at my lab, could I sterilize the straw in the autoclave? Is not better than just pasteurize it? Thanks!
I have the same question!
Straw is too nutrient poor to need autoclaves! But you can totally sterilize grain in jars or bags w/ inoculation ports and save a bunch on grain spawn by buying syringes
the music just wants to make me wanna move and dance!
Shortcut so I'm not the only one
Intereting videos Sir..its so simple
Can you tell me about the Straw?
In my country indonesia we used wood powder to made a log substrat but allso adding some formula. But dang is a long proses to grow fruits its about 40-60 days.
Can I use dray rice plant sir as straw?
nice video, i buy my straw precut and cleaned and use electricity to cook instead of propane. our entire facility is indoors tho
i noticed that the soy bean hulls have 40%fiber (85% of which is digestible) while coco coir has 85% fiber (60% digestible) everything else is the same within a few percentages. I am going to try supplementing some in my straw. going to use 50% wheat straw, 30% coco coir, and 20% spent brewers. I believe this will be a superior (to only straw) substrate. Wat do u think?
Hmmm... So, after colonization can they be keep in the sun light/out side? Is their a minimum growing mass size requirement?
Hi Tony, I gathered a lot of info on your channel to successfully started my first batch of blue oyster early October. I harvested about 2 lb plus. Now how to go about doing the second flush? Do you have any video available that I missed? Thanks and Really appreciate your efforts.
Awesome to hear! For the second flush, just leave the log in place- it will fruit again if left in the same conditions.
Could you please explain how it is not necessary to do this in a lab in front of a laminar flow ?
How do you find out the percentile spawn rate? I’m having SUCH a hard time finding blue oyster grain spawn. I don’t want 6lbs, cus I only plan to do like one bucket haha
I’d say anywhere from a 1:3-1:5 ratio on spawn to substrate. From what I’ve seen, many methods favor a layer upon layer effect, however I’ve also seen a “cocktail mix” of the two well tossed together but I fear that method may isolate spawn pockets if not mixed well enough. I hope this is the info you seek
What are the negative effects of more heat?
will any kind of straw work? if not which one works best?
likely, I have only used wheat straw and oat straw, but other straws can work for sure. Oysters can grow on a bewildering variety of substrates
What is the worst that could happen if you don't pasteurize your straw???? The whole boiling water for straw is out of the question for me and I'm hoping I can skip it without having a really bad outcome.
Okay, I bought a grow kit, it wasn’t chopped “really fine (6-8 inches). Not a big deal I guess it will take a while. Also in the grow kit was a bag of worm castings. I’m not seeing anyone on line using worm castings. Is this not needed?
i would love to know where u got the poly tubing from, thanks
Did you sterilize the poly bags too?
Do you need to sterilize the mixing box where you re mixing pasteurized straw and mycelium? How would you do it?
Can this process be done with shitake mushroom s??
Where did you purchase your propane burner and how much?
I am having a bit of trouble when I put straw into a small or medium container the mycelium takes to it fine, but when I am adding mycelium to straw bags it hardly colonizing at all?
10% grain to substrate weight. Is that wet or dry straw?
So you dont wait until visible mycelium until punching hole? Could we do the same with sawdust logs?
My straw log has some weeds growing in it. But most of log is colonized white mycelium. Some weeds growing out of holes I made in bag and in top of bag. Is it no good?
Have any of you reading this ever figured out a way to fold the poly into itself to make gusseted sides? to imulse smaller bags? home made unicorn bags so to speak
This video recommends 14" poly bags and the link to the web page recommends 16" poly bags. Have you settled on the best size yet? Thanks
It's not a problem the bag stay just opened to air and contaminants??
What yield do you get from one straw log?
What about lime methord... Which is best... I think lime is little simple... Please reply
I'm in Ghana can I using wood seudest for this bag or strum only please
hey bro, can i do the same method with my kitchen pot in a smaller scale?
Straw when soaked it grab a lot of water 😔 i add lime water to straw as needed, until moisture needed Then i steam bags for 3 hours
Hi , can I add straw to grow from inoculated substrate ?
any ideas where to get good amounts og hay? straw? how old is too old... blocked polished straw frmo the store is expensive compared to finding a bale.
Just found out paddy straw mushrooms grow in my 90f/35c year round climate....but why is it all so complicated? I have 2 left hands😭 all our veggies/mushrooms are imported a.k.a mush when they finally arrive on our island Curaçao so I thought of growing my own but omg
Do you put your bag in sun, partial or shade when waiting for mycelium to grow? I heard you say inside cool place, but didn't catch what you said.
Hey Ed! For this log, I put it in a cool, dark garage. That being said, mycelium will colonize just fine on a shelf in your house at room temperature. You should just keep it away from direct sunlight.
Did you ever grow straw mushrooms (Volvariella Volvacea) ?
I’m assuming injecting a spore directly from a syringe into the straw won’t work. You need the grain to be colonized with the spore, yes?
Yes, you need spawn. Spore inoculations almost certainly won't work. But making spawn is fun!
How do u make spawn
Many ways, but best way is to add mushroom culture (either liquid or agar) to sterilized grain in a sterile environment. You can use a spore syringe aswell, but the results are WAY less predictable.
Do we need to Cool down the Hot Straw.
What about cold pasteurization
@FreshCap Mushrooms Hi, great videos! do you know if oyster mushrooms grow on a pine chip substrate?
It will, but it’s not the ideal tree to use from my research. The spores in the wild will seek out downed oaks as an ideal candidate from my understanding. However, you will still see results, as to what yield, I can’t say
Hey tony, whats your opinion on cold water pasteurization vs hot water bath? What would u suggest is a better of the two?
It depends on your situation, they both have advantages. To be honest, I am liking to use Cold Water Pasteurization lately.
Newbie question - What is the problem with going over 82DegC or even boiling?
Because it pasteurized not sterilized.going too hot for too long sterilizes the medium which is not ideal for bulk substrates.for spawn it is needed but not for bulk
lawnmower also works, why would u put nice clean straw on a table and expose it to the elements?
Thought Frankly because at this point it doesnt have to be sterile, its only pasteurization anyway, so alot bacterial still alive as it is, well the helpful ones are still alive, with the proper amount of spawn ratio to straw the mycelium will out grow the bad spores and whatever makes contact from outside.... the tek he is using is normal practice and highly successful rate in mushroom growing world.
He said it in the vid...so the straw cools as fast as possible and has an actually shorter exposure time than it would have cooling bunched up for hours
Can this method apply for straw mushroom?
Can you grow psilocybin shrooms in this
Awesome video, just wondering what is your yield from a one log?
Hey Tom, it really depends on the species, but you can get over 100% BE from oyster logs.
@@FreshCapMushrooms BE?
Great Video. Ditch the porn music though lol.
Brian James haha thanks I appreciate the feedback
Just bugging. Better sound track than a few others I've seen haha.
How much does that cost in propane to pasteurize the straw?
Any toxicity risks with that block you put in there to hold the straw down? Have you ever had problems with using fresh wet straw or soaked straw
Hey Kaya, no I wouldn't think so at all it is just a cinder block, but you could use anything, most of the time I just use large rocks, anything heavy will work. I like to start with dry straw, just feel like there is less inherent contamination and you have a better chance at success. wet straw can be moldy, or be rife with other contaminated that might not be killed off so easily with pasteurization.
Nice. Well you gotta ask your cinder block distributor if there is fly ash in your blocks, bc that can be toxic.
Ok I’ve got my bag of pink oyster hanging inside my house... one quart of spawn to one medium filter bag. Followed every step. Is that it? Just wait???
Should be! Is it fully colonized yet?
Does the straw need to be organic? I’ve seen chopped straw at my local Tractor Supply. Wondering if that will work. I’m not sure if it’s organic or not.
Yes. On the chemical level, the substrate will affect not only yield but taste and even texture of the fruiting bodies. But very slightly. The process is simulating a dead log, so to spend more on one substrate over the other is your own discretion, but may not be worth it
if we use this method of growing for liquid culture how many lbs of straw to ccs/ml of culture should we use? thank you!
can I grow oysters in straw in a bucket?
