You have made such a huge impact on my life as a musician. I have learnt more in the past year than what I could in the last 5 years. I literally cry with happiness at times. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I definitely echo this sentiment... Even better, I was gifted the Beato Book as a Birthday gift a few years back and I'm constantly finding new ways to push my playing between going back to these videos and reading the book.
I have just posted a Google Drive link to the TAB in the description. So download it, practice the solo and learn how to play it! Thanks!! Also, go to the video setting (the Little Gear On the Video when you scroll over the bottom right corner of the video) and you can slow down the backing track 3 different speeds while retaining the same pitch. Use .075 to start and if it's too fast, use .050. Thanks!!! Rick
Looks like the pdf was trashed. Really enjoyed this. Got the BEATO BOOK for Christmas, man that gets deep. Thanks so much for sharing all this info with us. You're a hell of a pianist too Rick
Rick, didn't you do a video just going over the chord changes of Rhythm Changes ? I could have sworn I saw it posted about a month ago and I can't seem to locate that video... Thanks again for all your work !
Very clear and easy to understand. You are a very talented musician and communicator. One of the best I have ever seen and I have been a pro jazz musician for over 50 years.
Rick - your videos are helping me as a composer, musician, and producer. Thank you. Also, I think you’re the Anthony Bourdain of music (there’s a strong resemblance and you’ve got an eclectic palate)!
I know a lot of jazz geeks dont like this video BUT it's only pr@ck envy. Ricks knowledge and RESPECT for pretty much every genre of music is to be LOVED!! Buddy for what its worth well done. "You've got class". As Sinatra would say
Really helpful lesson there Rick, I particularly like the exercise where you play the bass line and start to associate the chord tones. Excellent content as per. All the best, Owen
Thanks so much, This is right on target for me, after those heavy-hitting theory sessions. :) I really appreciate your work on this channel (the Steve Vai interview was great too, speaking of transcribing.)
Mr Rick beato, sir, I'm a new subscriber and your channel is amazing thank you so much for teaching us how you do, your so cool! Lol...gonna learn this jazz thing for sure now!
Hi Rick! How're you doing? I wanted to ask you, if you could make this .pdf available again, because the link is off. I just want to download and practice it, analyzing the notes vs chords
Rick, can you do a video on Rhythm Guitar? What is it? What does it sound like (in different genres, for example). A lot of the best rhythm guitar strikes me as a hybrid of chords mixed with melodic elements... but there's also 'crafting the rhythm of a part' that's so different than 'campfire strumming'. D U D U D U.... I like Highway to Hell as a dead simple (chord-wise) example that demonstrates how rhythm sells a song - or how Tom Petty uses chord tones on the high strings to create melodic riffs with Rhythm Guitar in (for example) Free Falling... I watched a video about the song Rainy Night in Georgia which is a more sophisticated hybrid of techniques. It's such a broad and genre-specific topic but I know it isn't just playing chords. It's a specialized kind of part writing that supports songs. I'd love to hear your thoughts. By the way - you're the best.
What if yer range is so small as to make the many octave accomodations barely singable? I have such a small I vocal range I have a hard time singing solos. any tips?
Hi Rick ... could you develop more exercises with chord changes with a contrapuntal bass line. That sounded like a really interesting idea that you mentioned in the video. BTW - really enjoying many of your lessons from your book
Dude, thank u brother. And man i must say, that guitar is GORGEOUS!! (U lucky bastard lol) i'm a pianist but I'm just curious which model is that is that like a Les Paul Junior double cutaway what do you call that? And thank you so much for all your videos amazing and your family and you are blessed :-)
suddenly @ 7:39 jazz turns Classic! To what degree does the melody of the song ACTUALLY enter into the equation while playing chord changes...sounds like a stupid question, however Rock players are dismissed for building solos that could fit into any Song of the same Key(and sometimes NOT).Outlining a chord is one thing, complimenting the melody is another.I love Jazz music but like Rock(metal),sometimes I have to absorb it in small doses...laughing as I type this, love your lessons.
Hey Rick i love your tutorial, but the Pdf Google drive don't work ..i know the video is actually old form 2017..but i really need that...H E L P i need some body
postlove I tried doing screenshots of it at the end of the video but it didn't work. It was really hard to read. I figure people just pause each line and screenshot it then stitch it together
Omg what genre of Jazz is this? I'm sorry for the ignorance, I usually play Bossa Nova and Gypsy Jazz which both have a different flavor, but you got some lovely lines on that solo that I weirdly hear and I would like to incorporate them in my playing :)
Hi Rick, I have a little situation where I am asked to remove the link to this video when I recommended it in a forum. The administrator said I need your approval. Can you kindly approve my sharing on the forum (Classical Guitar Delcamp)? It is under the thread "Starting Jazz Guitar"
How do you get your guitar to sound so much like a "jazz guitar"? I play in my high school jazz band and can't exactly afford an archtop guitar. I currently use a stratocaster and traditionally they and les pauls aren't "jazz guitar". I have tried everything to make my guitar sound like "that sound". How are you getting your les paul to sound so good?
Jack Weekly Jazz can be played on a Strat, check out Jay Umble. Try putting some flatwound strings on, at least .11 or .12 gauge, Daddario Chromes or Thomastik Infeld George Benson strings. Play on the front pickup, roll the tone and/or the highs on the amp back about 30-40% , but leave the mids on 4-5, bass around 4. Turn the amp volume down but the guitar volume up - set the guitar vol wide open and adjust amp for the sound level you need. If the amp distorts at all, back off guitar vol until there's no distortion. Hope that helps.
All good but to me this is left brain, thinking through the changes, playing. Personally, I love Lester Young, Stan Getz et al. They, generally speaking, didn't work for the chord-changes, the chord-changes worked for them. They played in the domain of home key and the blues over the lot. The domain includes riffs, melodic ideas, half-step lead-ins, subs and slurs, pedals and all the rest infused with the blues. Forget the changes and let it rip. Personally, I find the above playing style unmelodic and cerebral - but that's just my humble opinion. Rick's playing is great, no doubt about it. It's a style thing.
Hi Rick - some really great stuff on here - Which is why I post - Q Why give all this info for free ? Do you think it may affect guitar tutors / tuition ? I have only a few 'example lessons' on my channel - Most is example ' playing' meant to inspire / intrigue etc Why not just give sample 'edits' of your content ...and charge for the full lessons ? You potentially make others look mean or desperate for having subscription fee's / pay per view set up / charging for their DVD'S etc - when they are just trying to get by as musicians. This is not really about ' how great or big you are ' . People need to get by at all levels . Its fine to respond with ' no way is this intended to replace lessons attended in person as we really need teacher student interaction / feedback . Students need to be seen to correct hand position / technique - heard / tested etc- .blah blar bla . Yes we know that - Thinking about that point ...how often have you seen it even mentioned on all these lessons on becoming awesome ? The truth is many wont now take lessons when they feel they ' get them for free online ' . I have college students ... but I like many also rely on private students /lessons . If the little guys dont make money then they simply cant justify the time spent making music... unless they are wealthy in the first place... and I really dont like the idea that only the rich make art : / Interested to hear your views on this . Thanks Billy
Good info and lesson. The editing is annoying. Really crappy. It feels like you're constantly jumping around. People don't talk like this normally. It's not worth the time you save. Speak normally, just say a little less.

I wish that I had the video, but you put it into the trash.
Hello Rick, great video, but the tab is not available. Any chance to re-upload the file?
Appreciate demystifying the complexity .... back to the woodshed.
Your Right hand is SO relaxed, I can't see how you hold a pick!
It's definitely the progression that sorts the men from the boys in terms of improvisation ability. Another marvellous lesson Rick.
Very clear and easy to understand. You are a very talented musician and communicator. One of the best I have ever seen and I have been a pro jazz musician for over 50 years.
Beautiful lines Rick. I'm at work and dying for my guitar right now.
Rick - your videos are helping me as a composer, musician, and producer. Thank you. Also, I think you’re the Anthony Bourdain of music (there’s a strong resemblance and you’ve got an eclectic palate)!

Love your channel, Rick.
I've been going all across your youtube vids... Awesome skill set man. Cheers !
Great lesson; nice playing too.

Backing track starts at 14:20
The link to the TAB is dead. Brrrr
If someone has the pdf, please send a link... thank you.
Rick, can you give us 5 or 10 recommended solos for transcribing......

Hi, I know this is 4 yrs old, but the link to your tab isnt available. Can you re-publish?
Beato Bop
Would playing this arpeggios spread detach from the style? Like outlining the shell voicing of a dominant chord for example
Rick beato, the one to came to aruba in 1986? hello from Pepe gonzalez
+Pepe Gonzalez What's up Pepe! Great to hear from you! Write me at rickbeato1@gmail.com
Love a lot of the ideas here, but why so many notes? I feel like every other bar would feel a little more organic. Really appreciate the lesson!
Separates the men from the boys :-) I guess I'm sort of in-betweenish . . .
Hubert Van Calenbergh I must be a toddler then! 😃
The backing track is very cool but the tempo is killing me - lets see how long it will take to think fast.

I'm not sure of the chord symbol for measure 24. Is it F major 7 #9 natural 5? and Why that chord? Thanks.
Can anyone who downloaded the .pdf TAB before the Google Drive link broke please forward it to me? Much appreciated. Fletch!

Pablo Cardona bebop
Thomas Dawson Is it very difficult to play?
Or better yet, how do I play it?
Listen to a lot of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillepsie and study the tunes
Si tocas gipsy, tenes que saber un Rythm changes...

Hey Jack- I've been making records for 20 years so I know about getting guitar sounds.
Well of course. But is there a certain amp setting you use? I have tried just about everything.
Jack Weekly Jazz can be played on a Strat, check out Jay Umble. Try putting some flatwound strings on, at least .11 or .12 gauge, Daddario Chromes or Thomastik Infeld George Benson strings. Very clean amp (just start with the EQ flat), neck pickup, roll the tone back. See how close that gets you.
Yea neck pick up, tone roled back
the link to the pdf says it is "in the owner's trash"
a chord chart would be incredibly helpful too
I have it. If you give me your email I'll send it to you.
