    Before you put your thoughts on comments, I have a request.
    Please choose empathy and be respectful to the guest. Not because he was an ex-British soldier, but because he’s just like anyone’s grandfather, who is sharing his thoughts and opinions of how he perceived the world. You don’t have to agree with him, but you can still choose to be kind. Because we all have that choice ❤

    This gentleman is close to my grandfather's age, if he was still alive. My grandfather was in the British Indian Army around the same time as this person. He had nothing but very fond memories of his British peers and supervisors. He was groomed to be a leader by his British superiors and was commissioned as an officer during WW2. After independence, he was offered to transfer his commission to the British Army and move to England. He chose to stay back and serve his country. The British may have hurt India in a million different ways. But they left India with a professional military that is its pride to this day. Even after Independence Britain helped indian military more than anyone else. Two things can be true simultaneously. British colonization was bad for India whole Britain also left India with great institutions that helped it succeed.

      The British called the Indian Civil Service (ICS) as "the Steel frame" which would provide an efficient apolitical administration to serve the best interests of the country. Unfortunately that "steel frame" is now all rusted thanks to incompetent people being recruited under the guise of "social engineering" policies. IN 1962 Nehru in his letter to all the CMs warned of the very adverse impact on India due to these "social engineering " policies, but it was too late. The genie was already out of the bottle !!!!

    Just have started watching but I do not agree with him regarding PM Modi and President Trump (I like them both, obviously). I still like how clearly he speaks at this age and it will be interesting to listen to historical points through his perspective.
    Colonial period was one of the darkest chapters in Indian history but it did have some silver linings to it. The Railways are the greatest example for that. Although built by the British companies and government for their own benefit, they also managed to unify Indians as a side effect. Railways helped India stand back on her feet again after independence. India withoit her railways is unimaginable.
    Currently, Britain is going through similar tough times too as their own government is increasingly getting oppressive towards its own natives. It is a sad situation overall. I empathise with the British natives because most did not even have a hand in colonisation. The newer generations are completely distant from it. What their government is doing to them is very wrong.
    Edit - disagree with him about Khalistan being equivalent to Scottish independence movement as well. Khalistan is a terrorist movement not based on any actual history.

    I mean we as Indians still havent been able to digest the fact that british people were not fully responsible for the partition. India's destiny with partition had already been written the day Islam invaded India. The fall of west and east pakistan was inevitable. Take Afghanistan for example, after it was occcupied and the hindu sikh and Buddhist population was cleansed and converted, the break of from India was confirmed.What we should be concerned about is that why we do not hold our leaders accountable for full population exchange.

    My apologies but I've got to say this: I'm assuming you are very young, but do they not teach any partition history in schools in India anymore? I am old and I went to school in India in the 70s before immigrating to the US with my parents. Now, granted, my grandfather was Netaji's protégé (he was a freedom fighter from the age of 15 and went to British jail for 14 years during the independence struggle and he was also later the general secretary of Forward Block) and one of Gandhi and Nehru's close group, but I'm pretty sure I did not hear about the fact that Jinnah was offered the PMO by them from my grandfather. I read about it in history class while in school there. You live in India and went to school there, right? So how do you not know this?! You said "really?!" @28:46 when he mentioned this. That is astounding to me that you would not know this. Do most young people in India not know these facts? Anyway, that is just one example. I feel that you should bone up way more on Partition history before you interview people like this gentleman. Just my opinion. No offense intended. However, I enjoyed this interview and I thank you and appreciate you and your efforts here. He is exactly my beloved late father's age and my father also had this fantastic memory and told me and my brother so much about those years. My grandfather died when I was 21, and we also heard a lot about those years from him. He was the reason my brother and I became history buffs and became economists and journalists. My father would have loved this interview and watched it over and over again. So, thank you again, so much.

    Very thankful to bring this interview and having to know some insights from the days of independence through Scottish eyes.
    Why do you interfere the narrative with odd questions in between? Yes you do have to redirect a narrative at certain times but off the wall questions does not fit in.
    And why are you so apologetic for a question to be asked? A Journalist is there to ask a question, and not to apologize as it sounds like you’re saying sorry on behalf of 1.4 billion people.

    And for Khalistan.. we now realize that The Khalisthan will be certainty in Truedo's Canada. Never in India because Sikhs belong to India! Also, Bharath basically and originally belongs to Hindus, Budhist, Sikhs, Jains and other indigenous people

    British generally treated all Indians with contempt. However, since they took power from Muslims, they considered Muslims as their main competitors for paramountcy in subcontinent. Thus, their treatment of Muslims was brutal as well. In addition they had ancient animosity going back to crusades.
    From a Hindu point of view, they simply exchanged one foreign overlord for another.

      That is the Pakistani narrative. However, Mughals were already in decline after 1707 and for much of the 18th century, it was the Marathas, a Hindu group, that were the most powerful empire in India. The British finished them off and gained pan-India power by 1818, excluding Punjab. The point you miss is that already during the latter part of the Mughal empire, the Hindus were increasingly resurgent and this resurgence continued with the Maratha ascendency and when they fell, the Hindu resurgence continued under the British while the Muslims were in decline since loss of Mughal power. It is this continued Muslim decline which is also the cause of the failure of Pakistan as a viable state.

      @mohammedsiddiqi2862 22 часа назад

      Battles of Plassey, Buxar, Mangalore, Srirangapatnam and many other battles, British fought against Muslims not Marhattas. EIC recognized Moghul king as sovereign till 1857. The last great enemy of British was Tipu sultan. It was Moghul king they jailed at Rangoon.
      As for Marhattas, by 1707 they were crushed. Not a single Marhatta held any ground. All were in grave or in Moghul employment. They did rise up again but were crushed at Panipat in 1761. They rose again but surrendered at Basein in early 1800s to EIC. It was game over. All Marhattas surrendered. In middle 1700s Marhattas did make a strong stand. Some sided with certain Moghul nobles in Moghul civil wars. But at no time Marhattas held any ground long enough to make any difference. Only one instance of Marhattas unity was at battle of Khadla agaisnt Nizam in 1795.
      Accounts of EIC were mostly lies to advance their commerce. Almost all of history till early 1800s come to us from Muslim writers. Even today if you don’t know Persian or Urdu and have access to those ancient books it’s not possible to learn history properly.

    • @mohammedsiddiqi2862
      @mohammedsiddiqi2862 21 час назад

      Marhattas helped British against Tipu. Marhattas tacitly sided with British against Nizam. Their scorched earth policies bankrupted the land. Except for one or two Marhatta chiefs rest were mere bandits. Every single Marhatta submitted to British and recieved pensions for their betrayal. In the end we, Hindu and Muslim, alike lost. India is on its way to Hindu Rashtra, in practice it has become one, which does not bode well for future. Pakistan is a work in progress. Grave yards of history full of those who underestimated the musalmaan. Punjab, Bengal, Sindh, Kashmir, Baluch, just sample of nations which became Muslim majority.

      Forgot about the Maratha century 1719, when Bajirao was at the gates of Delhi, - to 1803? It was from the Marathas that the British took the throne of India not the puppet Muslim “Mughal”.

    • @mohammedsiddiqi2862
      @mohammedsiddiqi2862 17 часов назад

      In 1803 Baji Rao II, was a puppet, sometimes under British and other times under some Marhattas chief, he fought against Schindia the Marhattas raja. Moghul king at this time was Shah Alam II, also under British. Schindia won this war but they all lost soon. But at no time any Marhatta was ever crowned as king in Delhi. Moghuls, albeit as British puppets, remained the kings till 1857. It’s a tale of cowardice, both Hindus and Muslims were puppets. Marhattas after a brief flare up surrendered at Basien in early 1800s.
