Had a right ankle fusion in 2009.
Felt a little sorry for my self the first couple of years. Gained a lot of weight. BAD IDEA!!!!My New Balance 1080's changed my life!
    I'm up to a 5km jog 3 times a week now.
    Lost about 40kg.
I just need to keep an eye on my medial longitudinal arch. It tends to drop a little.
Strangely I prefer to walk barefoot around the house.
You can pretty much do anything you can think of. Take it slow and pain will tell you if you've gone to far. Change, adapt and try again.

Thanks! I had a left ankle arthrodesis (2006) after a nasty tri mal injury. I wore MBT’s for years and loved them. Glad to see they are back in action after some changes that made them hard to buy for awhile. And you are right, no more heels for the ladies. It was hard to give them up but being able to walk again made it worth it. Thanks for your video.

Thanks for the message Elizabeth. Can I ask a question with regards to your fusion. After such a long time are there any complications? Eg knee pain? Foot pain?
I have only had the fusion for about 6 years so far so was wondering if I will experience changes in the future? I appreciate each case is unique to a certain extent but any insight would be helpful. Many thanks

I've had ankle fusion on both feet 12 years a go when I was in college. I'm like you where 10,000 steps is my threshold. I live in Colorado and still do long hikes and backpacking treks. After 6 miles, I just deal with all pain and recover with stretches at end to combat swelling. I've tried Hokas, but definitely going to try out those monster MTBs now for long walks. Oddly Altra Lone Peaks are my go to trail shoe which are more on the minimalist side but yet people with foot/anklet still love them. Odd indeed since they are on other side of spectrum compared to Hokas/MTB.

Walking with one crutch now but none of my regular trainers are comfortable as I have a lot of hardware in my foot now 😔 I've been searching for information like this. Very helpful. Glad you are going well. I'm at the cross roads with damaged cartilage of the talus and just about to start talking to a surgeon regarding fusion versus TAR. Does your ankle fusion effect your other joints? Like they say you get arthritis in the bones going out the the toes? Id love to have an ankle replacement but something tells me it will be worse years down the track than a fusion.

    Hi everyone,
First of all I wanted to thank you for your videos! I had ankle fusion surgery 9 months ago and I've tried different Skechers and other fluffy-cushioned shoes from other brands, still struggled mostly.
Your video was the only one I found (surprisingly) about rocker bottom shoes and before going for the more expensive MBT or New Balance, I just ordered this:
Adidas Adistar running shoes. Apparently this is their only designated rocker bottom shoes and it works great, I can finally walk again somewhat longer distances without pain. You can find deals for it under 100€ (at least in Germany), so if someone's not sure about if this type of shoes are good, I recommend this.
Good luck with the recoveries, everybody!

Thank you ! This is really a great series of videos ! I have pretty severe osteoarthritis in my right ankle. I am nearing the end of trying all the non-surgical methods of treatment and am now starting to consider surgical options. My two main concerns are: (1) I like to go on a long hike/walk (10-13 miles on pretty well grroomed trails) once per month. This would be in the range of 20,000-25,000 steps with rest stops during the day. In one of your videos on MBTs I believe you mentioned 13,000 steps is pretty hard to get past. Do you have any view of an occasional day at 20,000+ steps?, (2) The doctors that seem to promote ankle replacement seem to point to fusion leading to issues with foot, knees, or hips 5-10 years down the road due to an altered gate. It sounds like you may be several years post surgery. How is it going? Any development of "collateral" issues? Again, thank you very much for the very informative series.

    Hi,
Thanks for the video, it was interesting and helpful. I am currently looking for a pair of trainers after having an ankle fusion in February. I know about the rocker sole as my Consultant suggested these. I must have looked at 100s of trainers in the last few weeks!! Some brands make it easier than others to advertise the rocker sole. I have ordered a few pairs to try, mostly Skechers and also a pair of Asics Evoride 3. I had a fusion due to drop foot and have never been able to walk with a natural gait on my left foot. It was always toe to heel, not heel to toe! I'm now trying to learn heel to toe and am desperately trying to find the right trainers to help me do this! I hadn't heard of MBT even though I have done a lot of research, so will look into those and see if there is anything that would be suitable for me!

    • @anklefusionguy
      @anklefusionguy  2 года назад +1

Yeah give the MBT trainers a go, that might prolong your ankle joint. Fusion is the last option so if you can’t walk without pain go for it. I had 5 operations to try save my ankle cartilage/ add extra cartilage but nothing worked so I didn’t take fusion likely. It’s not ideal because there are limitations but I remain positive and walking pain free has been great. Good luck and stay in touch

@@anklefusionguyAppreciate the feedback. Yeah it is painful to walk and some days are worse then the others. I haven’t had my fusion yet. Having a triple fusion in three weeks. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea 😣 I already wear mbts and found for hiking that the rocker soles made me more unsteady and I slipped easier. I’m hoping I’ll be able to hike again in my normal hiking shoes. I normally hike 5-10km but can be steep at times. I hope I will be able to hike and cycle and snorkel after having this surgery 🥺

@@rachnailedit - so I would wait on fusion. Well unless your bone on bone like me but even then. Ankle replacements would be a way better option. If your under age 55 due to healing. I finally found a doctor who provides options vs surgery fusion.

@@rachnailedit - I don't know what problems you have with ankle but if you can hold out on fusion of the ankle. I use to swim 2 miles ride mountain bike everywhere. Could run long distance pretty well until my accidents. Got my ankle fused because I had no cartilage for 2 years and pain was to much. Bone on bone not fun.
I am not sure your age or how severe your problem is currently but if you can get a second or 3rd opinion.
With ankle fusion treading water is a little more difficult. Hard to do breast stroke. Need flippers! As for hiking well. So far I use hiking sticks to counter possible instability and a little wider shoes. Lately I have been thinking in investing in minimalist shoes to help build the muscles I can for balance with what little movement I have left with toes.

Do you mean a motor bike or a cycle bike? I think both are ok. When I cycle a bike I just have to move the foot a bit further back on the pedal (mid foot) otherwise if I cycle with the ball of my foot like normal that can cause pain in the ankle. Hope this helps and good luck

Hi , my husband had an ankle fusion 14 years ago , hes never found suitable trainers but recently got fitted with some nice running trainers for tge gym with a rocker sole , they were too flimsy and within a week his foot was sliding off the edge ! The run shop were really helpful but have nothing that is sturdy enough
Do all ankle fusions have a tendancy to roll outwards ?
Are mbt strong on the tops , Nike 95’s seem the only shoes that doesnt seem to collapse on the outer side , but dont give enough movement so cause pain
Its a shame there is nowhere in uk to go and get fitted

I had ankle fusion because of a football injury. I could not walk without extreme pain. The fusion took away the joint pain. I walk normally without a limp. It is a bit painful to walk bare foot, which is why I wear the trainers. Not all fusions are successful but mine seems to be good. I am going to upload some videos this week showing me doing some squats and other exercises. If you have any other questions please ask and I could add the answers to my next video.
