  • Hey folks, not a complete DIY Guide as I'm still waiting my tripod for Xmas but a walk through on how to remove and replace the indicator unit on a 2003 Toyota Yaris / Echo / Vitz
This is a much easier job than more modern Yaris models as the airbag unit and steering don't need to be replaced :)

For my 2005 toyota echo; with lights ON, my high beam light comes ON, automatically and sometimes, when I switch off the engine and headlights, the headlights turn ON by itself. Appreciate if you can tell what to do in this case.

Chances are if you have a European Yaris that's 2008 or so - or onwards - not much of this ^^ will apply. You won't have the handy plastic cover on the light-stalk, the airbag won't come out the way YT shows you & the repair will be a lot skillier than "use some sandpaper to clean the contacts" mainly as you won't be able to see any contacts as they are internal to the switch unit.
You also won't be "popping out 2 torx screws" to get the airbag off or pushing some handy springs through lovely access holes as you'll only find one & it only allows you access to the lowest airbag clip. Barely.. The 2 upper clips, you'll have to go peeling, squinting & poking to release - loads will give up in frustration, and if they don't, they will then encounter the switch-unit itself, which will make them then give up because you're going to have to dismantle that as well & it ain't that easy either unless you do a lot of electrical repairs.
If you do get that far, bang the entire contact-unit into an ultrasonic cleaner to remove the cruddiness. That's the contact unit plate that carries just the copper contacts - the one you removed from the switch-unit without breaking anything/losing anything/remembering how it all goes back together.. fiddly.
My honest opinion is that unless you are pretty good at repairs, give it a miss & get someone to fit a new switch-unit for you. Pay the nice person. Thank me later. :-) I fix a good few of these and most of these YT videos are La-La-Land compared to what you will probably encounter on your own specific model.

That's a really helpful description, have you made your own video showing how the steps differ on the European models?

Can I swap the switches ? Currently I have wipers on the left and indicators on the right but I want wipers on right and indicators on left.

That's a great question, I'm pretty sure it's not possible though. I don't have the car so I can't check but from what I recall the switch mounts weren't symmetrical and neither was the cowling for the steering column
