    My boyfriend's Japanese and although we aren't married yet, I can totally relate to all of these except the feet thing, he doesn't care about feet really. I'll share two funny stories.
    Communication: My boyfriend likes to use English slang but sometimes he uses the wrong expressions at the wrong times. For example, when he stubs his toe, he shouts "Fuck off!" at his toe. And when he drops something he says "Ouch." I've explained it to him, but these kinds of situations are split-second reactions, and so he still accidentally blurts out the wrong phrase sometimes. I feel very bad laughing at him when he stubs his toe.
    Accidental Flirting: One time my (female, american) friend came to visit and stayed with us for a couple days. The first night she was here, she got out of the bath and came back into the living room and sat on the carpet to watch tv. My boyfriend grabbed a comb, sat on the couch behind her and started combing her hair for her. She and I were both really shocked by this but he didn't seem to know why we were so surprised. I got the feeling that he wouldn't have done this if she were Japanese, but he always combs my hair for me after the bath and it seemed logical to him that this is something foreign women enjoy and in order to be a good host he should comb her hair for her? IDK, I still don't totally get what his thought process was with this one.

    I'm Canadian, I don't understand how Americans wear shoes in the house. Take that shit off I just cleaned the floor!

    • @ForeverCellist
      @ForeverCellist 9 лет назад +181

      A lot of Americans actually don't wear shoes when at home or with someone you know well - everyone I know takes off their shoes because they want to be comfortable. It's usually when at someone else's house that we leave our shoes on. It's considered disrespectful to take your shoes off at someone else's house unless you are close enough to them or they invite you to take your shoes off. Taking your shoes off at the home of someone you don't know well enough is kind of like just walking over to their fridge and taking food without asking. There is a line between feeling comfortable in someone else's home and making yourself *too* at home, I guess. This is just from my personal experience, I actually prefer the culture of taking shoes off but I guess this is just something that goes back in the history American views on politeness.

    • @thisishowirelax148
      @thisishowirelax148 9 лет назад +146

      ForeverCellist That's so weird to me. I would think it's more disrespectful to keep your shoes on and track dirt all over the floor.
      If you came to Canada and left your shoes on you'd get an earful haha.

    • @ejhatespeople
      @ejhatespeople 9 лет назад +19

      +Malos Kain Well I'm sure some households allow shoes in the house but for me, growing up in a strict Asian Culture, shoes are a big nono especially on carpet, however if the floor is cold, I wear house slippers. :) So don't generalize all Americans, it depends on how they are raised. Cleanliness is a must for me x.x

    This probably explains why the protagonist in harems are so polite and composed, and why all the girls get the wrong impression... it could be to exaggerate and make comedy out of a common thing Japanese men do when they interact with people.

      Rachel & Jun I'm from the United States, and rarely ever talk about someone I'm in a relationship with with other people. It often makes the person you're talking to feel less important in your life, and I'd rather it be less known, so that there's less people to say rude things about us. I gain no enjoyment from talking about a significant other to someone other than that person. Why would I? The reason the relationship makes me happy is the person themselves; talking about them doesn't make me feel any nicer. That's just my idea of the person, not the person themselves.

    • @notaras1985
      @notaras1985 9 лет назад

      Rachel & Jun wow japanese guys are so cool. much better culture than the west. westerners are loudmouthed, sassy, showing off, judgmental and cunning. its good to see such a cultural difference. and i certainly congratulate them on the "dont talk about your relatioship even to friends" part. thats a very smat thing to do for many reasons.

    • @mizu-no
      @mizu-no 9 лет назад +5

      I think its important to some what show your taken. Like have a picture of your girlfriend in your wallet or on your phone. Like if you are oblivious then like the picture background will explain itself if you look at your phone. Dont need to bring it up. Its just for me i am always friend zoned with Japanese guys cause they don't get i like them. Thank heavens i have Japanese girlfriend who can till me who is single. But still dont have that all the time.
      I think there is pro and cons to not talking about it. I think showing your taken in a polite way is ok.

    I definitely understand a lot of this. I had a friend who moved here from Egypt a few years ago, and she's introduced me to all her family, so I've gotten used to them misusing/misunderstanding English phrases. Especially the "What's wrong with you" part. It's something with all foreign people, because English is weird. My favorite is explaining the difference between a "butt dial" and a "booty call" It's always entertaining.

    I'm like Jun, I tend to lean a little bit and draw all my attention to the person I'm talking to... I might look like flirting especially if the person is male... now that I'm watching this video, I understand more why some people were unconfortable and some girls (the girlfriends,lol) were mean to me... but for me, it's not flirting, it's just a spontaneous gesture of attention, I'm like "I'm 100% listening to you and what you're saying is really interesting". No more, no less.
    If I'm flirting, it's gonna be more complicated, I'll tend to be a litle bit clumsy and more distant because I'm tense, so I can't be "spontaneous" anymore and I have to focus on two things: my own attitude and paying enough attention to the other...

    • @ahleenah
      @ahleenah 8 лет назад +22

      Now that I think about it.... I think I'm doing that too! XD
      I never realized it before watching this video because it was (and is) just a natural gesture for me to show the other person "I'm genuinely interested in what you're talking about"
      Now I finally understand why some guys acted the way they did even though I wasn't interested at all... Ha... Ha........😅

    • @Ssookawai
      @Ssookawai 8 лет назад +22

      seru Seruna
      But you know, I won't change that to please some people or the girlfriends because sooo many others really appreciate how "involved" and "focused" I am when they talk to me, they feel my respect for them and that's something nobody can hate, who doesn't want to be fully heard and respected as a person expressing him/herself? :-)
      For some others, they feel a warmer atmosphere around them, as if I had some caring vibes which give them a lot of comfort and bring their smiles back to them, especially when they talk about an issue or some personal memories.

      Me too!! Even in my country (I'm a part Japanese descendant, but born and raised in Brazil)! Some guys thought I was flirting for listening carefully to them and smiling (and I normally do that to EVERYONE, women and men). Here in Japan, that hasn't been an issue so far (not with Japanese people) or, at least, no Japanese said anything about it.

    I'm Japanese American and my first girlfriend was White. We met in college. I never talked to anyone but one day, she asked me to have lunch with her. Funny, she had a White boyfriend, but she asked me to have lunch together. Anyway, when Summer break came, she dropped her boyfriend and asked me to be her boyfriend. The first time her Mother met me, she told her daughter, "Quick! Get him into the backyard before the neighbors see!". After 6 months of dating, her Mother told her, "I'd rather see you die in a car accident than go out with him!". Finally, her Mother forbid her to see me, so she went to her Father. Her Father had been a prisoner of war in Japan. He had been captured on Bataan and shipped to Japan. Her Father told his wife, "She can go out with anyone that makes her happy!". After college, we married, but it only lasted 3 years.

Idc about americans who became prisoners of war. That way we Filipinos got our revenge on USA for the atrocities they committed in my country. That mother had no right to treat you bad co'z those americans did worst to the world now that you mentioned her husband was an american soldier. I abhor all the american soldiers who colonized my country and those american soldiers who were and are still abusing and maltreating my country and my people! I abhor americans for still treating us their colonial slaves! So, don't feel sorry for that old hag. If I were there, I would have fired my gun at that dirty and fat old hag

      Being an American living in Ukraine, I have a lot of the same issues with feet thing. Also they keep their relationships close to their chests as well. My other half can not speak any English, so if I make a mistake, I need to figure out how to explain to her what I wanted to say. International relationships can tricky at times, but I would never change a thing.
      Us Americans and Canadians ( we are about the same) seem to think somethings are flirting that others don't.

    Yes, it does happen in every international relationship. I'm a Belgian, and I'm with a Dutchman, living in the Netherlands. I barely crossed the border, and we speak the same basic language. (Although, when I first moved here, no one could understand my dialect.) But the cultural gap is quite big. So it doesn't matter how close the country of your international lover is, you'll run into cultural hurdles.

      AsiaticTruth I'm not saying our cultures don't get along, I'm saying there are hurdles. For example, Southern Dutch people love Belgians, our speech, our food, our art, etc. But that only proves even more that there are fundamental differences.

We have been married for years and still find funny differences. I love hearing other peoples stories. I wonder if we are more tolerant when we marry across borders?

    I completely agree with all these points! I'm lucky though because Takashi is such a shy man that he really doesn't talk much to people he doesn't know, so the 'unknown' flirting doesn't happen. But it took him such a long time to tell his parents, pretty much 2 years after we started dating! He told them we were thinking of marriage and his mother was so shocked because it was the first time his mother and I met and he threw that into her face! A big thing I noticed since dating him though that he does not like public affection, which I guess is true about most of Japan, but as an American woman, I like to hold hands and such. It gets frustrating at times, especially the communication issues, but in the end, I have him and its so worth it. :)

    • @RachelandJun
      @RachelandJun  10 лет назад +24

      It was the same for us with PDA, too! Although Jun's gotten used to holding hands in most places now (but not the grocery store because "Rachel that's so embarrassing no!!") haha
      The communication stuff is deeeefinitely frustrating sometimes! Poor Jun faces most of it though, since I typically make him speak in English most of the time.

    • @TwitchDesu

      The only time I got Takashi to hold my hand was when he came here and we went to Walmart...apparently that wasn't embarrassing at all. But walking down the streets of Koube or Osaka? Nope ...I'm just gonna walk faster and ignore your advances! Lala laaaand. Lmao.

      I actually got so mad that I went to the nearest cross walk, and went to the other side of the street. He didn't even notice until 3 blocks down and started to freak out because he couldn't find me. Don't worry, the street wasn't completely packed so he could have easily seen me if he had looked a little more to the left ;)

    I think a lot of these issues just come naturally with multi-cultural relationships~
    Maybe the examples are different, but even me and someone else I dated, despite that we both have spent a large amount of our lives in America, since I am also Chinese/Taiwanese, and he is Korean, we still ran into some funny(?) miscommunication.
    But like any miscommunication, regardless of what caused it, the only way to solve it is by communicating more^^

      These still exist in the same cultures, too. My boyfriend does not understand that a girl touching him and laughing is flirting. My parents are also from Russia, so although I was born in America I still grew up in a slightly different culture, so sometimes we do hit strange barriers. For example, apparently in America it's normal to go into your friend's refrigerator and find food by yourself, even if his parents own the house. I was raised to see me being a guest as a burden and to not get in the way and to not get comfortable in a house you don't contribute to.
      You're totally right though, it's healthy to understand that there's differences and to talk about it instead of getting mad right away

    I'm probably digging way too deep into this, but I actually think it's really sweet of them to choose the word 'need' instead of something like 'want' or 'like to'. I know they probably weren't doing it intentionally, and I know the English phrase has a different meaning (it's the same in Italian), but it still was really nice of them to say that. I think that from a linguistic point of view saying that you WANT someone or that you LIKE it when somebody's with you... I don't know, now that I think about it it's kind of creepy. I mean, don't we use those same words for food and objects? Words like 'want' and 'like' referred to a person's presence only make me think of the delight I find in that presence... it's the same as with objects. Let's say a book: I like a book, I want a book: I know the book will make me happy. I like a person, I want a person: I know that person will make me happy.
    But the word 'need' is different. When I 'need' a book or any other object, it just means that I'm looking for it because it will be useful to me. But when I need a PERSON, it doesn't have the same meaning. It means that I long for that person, that I miss that person deeply, that I wish that person was there because I am missing a very, very important part of myself. I'm not just looking for delight in that person's presence, I'm looking for something more important. When I want something or like something and I don't get it, I'm dissapointed. But when I need something and I can't have it, I truly suffer. People use the word 'need' for truly important things, such as medicine and education. You don't say you 'want medicine', you say you need it. And they needed you and your presence.
    And one of the most important things in life is love.
    I think that, perhaps without really understanding it, they were trying to express how really important your presence was for them.
    Now, that particular phrase has a negative meaning for us, because our presence may be required for something 'serious' and not just important to them. 'Need' can also have a very serious meaning, and that is why theirs was a mistake. But I still think it was a sort of... sweet mistake, don't you? Last example. You can say to your loved ones: 'I want you' or 'I like you'. But none of them will be remotely as deep and romantic as 'I need you'. I think that, among those three words, it is the one closest to love.
    Sorry for the scroll, I should seriuosly apply for a position as a writing monk. My comments are always huge and useless. XD Anyway, you all have a great day! :)

    Wow, Jun's cute! I appreciate you uploading this, it actually brought me a little bit of closure. You see, a long time ago I dated a gorgeous Japanese man, and I really liked him, but he just bottled everything up inside and thought I was weird for wanting him to share his thoughts or feelings with me all the time. I believe communication is vital for any relationship, so things just fell apart. I always assumed it meant he was seeing other girls, or just thought I was out of his league and not worth the effort (I sure did, at least). But I guess it's just the cultural norm over there.

      Not exactly. If your guy goes out with an American girl to a movie and a dinner alone, she thinks it is a date. i'm sorry about all of the judgmental comments you've received on this video, esp. from people who don't seem to have experience with intercultural relationships. i don't think a 10 minute video is sufficient to judge someone else's marriage, and it's obvious the purpose of this video is to talk about funny or strange differences you encounter when dating someone from another culture. i mean, in america, if someone demanded you wipe your feet before you get into bed, you would think that person has OCD.
    in that same vein, i'm not sure about japan, but in korea there's no concept of "double-dipping." you share meals from the same dish, and no one thinks about dipping a french fry in ketchup twice. a lot of americans think it's gross to double-dip, but to a korean, this concept is just as "silly." it's not that these cultural differences are "wrong" or "right" or "good" or "bad," but from someone who hasn't grown up with them, it can be funny or weird or sometimes unintentionally hurtful.
    TBH, i think some people aren't used to seeing an AMWF couple and are coming in with a preconceived notion of, "oh, she's a loud, domineering american and he's a quiet, reserved japanese person; she's obviously controlling him." i'm not sure about grace and ryosuke since i've never seen other videos of them, but i think it's obvious not just from other videos, but in THIS video, that rachel is gentle when dealing with jun and jun has no problem speaking his mind.
    unrelated to the above, but i think the "men can't tell when women are flirting with them" is a japanese or "eastern" thing in this respect instead of a universal thing! i can't seem to find the study on it right now (which is strange, because it's a really popular one), but in the america, most men assume a woman is sexually interested even when she's just being friendly. i think a lot of this has to do with the culture and the media in the america, though, because unfortunately the general consensus in locations outside of the U.S. as well is that american women are "easy."
    anyway, sorry for the long comment! i look forward to the video from ryosuke and jun about the "weird" things they experienced!

      Jun's a little self-conscious about his image in our videos, actually. He's not very outwardly expressive (like a lot of Japanese people--Ryousuke is an exception here!) so in most his videos he gets comments like this. :/ He works really hard to "act" more outgoing for our Western viewers but it's still difficult for him, so stuff like this is a little hard for him to read. He's been planning on making a video about it, actually!

      Rachel & Jun He made a video once with his sister - I think I understand know why she was the way she was. I didn't think anything negative of it, but I did notice it.
      Jun should mostly enjoy himself. :) Don't stress too much about it, Jun!
      Also, thank you guys for doing all these videos! Everything is so interesting! Ever since I was four years old for some unknkwn reason I just really liked the japanese language and the little things I knew about the japanese culture. Now I remember my fascination again and I really enjoy your videos. :) Defintely want to learn Japanese again!

      Also are you guys going to make a video about some of the issues you guys had to break through culturally? I mean I totally get it if u guys don't want to. But it would be really educational to watch to see what obstacles you guys had to, or still have to go through :3

    Hi, I recently moved to Japan to live with my Japanese bf and found your channel.
    I totally agree with these as I have experienced all of them, especially the first one and last one. I felt so insulted and horrible when he called me dirty and demanded that I clean my hands whenever I enter a building, changing my whole outfit when I get home and complaining that I wasn't wearing slippers in the house or that I would sit on the floor, he's calmed down since then luckily.
    He's also a really really flirty guy, so it was difficult at the start to see him always flirting with these girls who would then tell me how they feel about him and he's completely oblivious and refusing to believe when I tell him what the girls said to me (he always introduced me as his friend, never girlfriend)

      That one time I had my American friend over for a sleep over and at some point we were outside in our backyard walking bare feet. That particular wasn't the problem (it was summer!) but when we went to sleep she went into my bed WITHOUT washing her feet and they were dirty. Like really dirty. You could see the dirt. They were almost black from all the dirt. But she flatly REFUSED TO WASH THEM. I even begged her to please please wash them but she said I didn't have the right to tell her what to do with her feet. Well that was the last time she slept at my house.

    you took off your shoes and wore socks all day ofc you need to clean your feet, your foot is in a dark (maybe slightly damp place) when it's in the sock bc of your foot temperature and everything if you dont it smells (even if it's subtle it still means it should be cleaned) .. i always wash my feet immediately after taking off my socks even if i wasnt wearing it with shoes (if i just wore it at home)

Of course it'd be nice to have a little "heads-up" of the subject matter, and it's confusing to come from an unknown perspective, it's really nice to hear a positive outcome!

    I'm not sure I completely agree with the girl's opinions on the boys "flirting." I think it's important to establish trust with your significant other. Regardless of what it looks like, if Jun sees leaning closer and maintaining eye contact as a way of maintaining a connection with another, then that's all there is to it. If it means nothing more to him, then I don't think it should be labeled flirting. But I can understand how this could be upsetting at first if you didn't know this. I would have an important talk where guidelines are layed out and misunderstandings are resolved. Cool video! Very neat learning about the cultural differences.

      +Kiz zie The point Rachel was making was that the girl Jun was focusing on got the wrong impression, not Rachel. Somewhere in the comments she said Jun was labeled a playboy before they were an item and he himself had no idea why, meaning the girls felt he was flirting even if he wasn't.
