I'm pretty sure it was just a joke that Ryosuke was making, not something that actually happens. If you watch Grace and Ryosuke's channel you'd know that he has a jokester type personality.

I personally have really curly hair and let me tell you, you do NOT wash that every day because it will become incredibly frizzy and uncontrollable!
Just smear some pure coconut oil on your palms after you have taken a shower and your hair is a bit damp. Then rub them into your hair. Once a week oil your hair and scalp thoroughly before shower. In a months time your hair and scalp will be wonderful.

Everyone should find the hygiene regiment that works for them and keeps them healthy. It's different for everyone, yet people seem to have a hard time grasping that ^.^;
Oh my god, I guess I just now realized how much we throw around "I love you!" in America... at least once a day- to family, friends, loved ones, pets, inanimate objects.. Yeah, we say it a ton.
All the Americans I know are all over-emotional. For me all the "friendlyness" seems very faked when it just takes one tiny thing for them to twist "love" to hate.
So I am more on the Japanese side with their logic. If I say something I DO mean it.

Ditzy Rose I still say it more than the Japanese do I think, but I went through the chat years as a teen very conscious to not say it if I didn't feel it, because it got tossed around a lot because it was expected. So now itd become more of a habit not to say it. I don't really say it to family, but to close friends and pets it's very regular. My cats "nickname" is "my little love" because I say it so often. I do wish there was a special word for the stronger feeling where the emotion of love and other similar powerful emotions like passion are combined and was used like the Japanese use the love. And American "love" was a more standard warmer heartier day to day. Especially because it's commonly used as a synonym for "strongly like" when it kind of has those two meanings which takes away from it's power in one meaning.
Poi Lethe I think it's mostly based on the context of the situation.
The biggest problem I have with this "pointless vocalisation" is when people "demand" to hear it all the time, otherwise you 'don't love them'. Last time I checked love is an emotion and there are different ways to express emotions. Speaking CAN transmit the meaning/emotion. But when I HAVE to say it, just to shut a person up, that is the point when saying it becomes utterly meaningless and stupid.
I am a good liar and I can lie straight to peoples faces about my 'supposed feelings' and they'd think I mean it.
So rather than resort to lying because it's what "society expects me to do" I'd much rather be silent about it and just show my feelings to the people I like with actions.
I think talking to pets and plants falls into a different category, as we actually do mean what we say when we talk with them.

I am not much of a beard person... A little stubble is okay or like Ryosuke with the small goatee but other than that it has to fit the guy or look good on him other wise nope ...clean shaven please. :)
Texan in Tokyo Didn't know how many people were "Do it Yourself"ers, since my family is more country so we do a lot of stuff ourselves. We put in our whole kitchen floor when it started to get old. My mom is kind of disappointed Im not more of that kind of person though.
Having facial hair as a man is commonly very attractive to American women... but personally I find a clean shaven face MUCH more appealing. I think this is why I'm often very attracted to Asian men. I like how well groomed they are. That said, I agree with Rachel that washing thin/fine hair daily is very bad for your hair's health!! I wash my hair every other day. I wash my body daily though. I think you have to take into account what works best for you. Generally, it seems Japanese have thicker, stronger hair that can withstand many washes. Very interesting video! Thanks!
I like clean shaven a bit more, too, but (east and some southeast) Asian men can't really grow much hair, in the first place. xD

Lol at all the people saying, "I wash MY hair everyday and its not damaging it!" yes, it is. Many reputable studies have been done on the drying, damaging effects of soaps on the skin and hair. Whether you realize it OR NOT, washing your hair with shampoos every single day (yes, even that super pricey, fancy shampoo) is so extremely bad for your hair. It is making your hair brittle, more prone to split ends and breakage, and in the long run, there are studies out there that have shown that washing your hair every single day is actually what is causing your hair to be so greasy/oily in the first place because your scalp is attempting to overcompensate for all of the natural oils you keep stripping out of it by making more and more oils. I'm not going to do the leg work for you, do a simple Google search about the harmful effects of everyday soap usage on hair and skin and read up on it yourself, but in the end of things, you can delude yourself into thinking you're doing fabulous things with your bottle of "Herbal Essence" all you want, but you're genuinely just damaging your hair and thinking otherwise doesn't change the well researched scientifically backed FACTS. So lay off of the girls. they didn't say they never bathe, they said they don't wash their hair everyday. And like it or not, science is on their side.

+Ceres Azalia I wash my hair everyday because i have to, and i refuse to not wash it everyday. The reason, i have extremely oily skin and if I don't wash it, it gets extremely oily really fast. Even if i wash it, 6 hours later, it will get oily again. This is why I carry dry shampoo everywhere.

watch the movie "Shogun". There is a Japanese woman who is made responsible to teach Japanese language and custom to the Englishman. She explains it pretty well. Plus, it is an excellent movie!
People spontaneously learn the language when they feel the need to. Those hispanics in America who only speak Spanish certainly are happy within the community of mates from similar backgrounds. But in case of Rachel and Grace, I think they had to learn it just to survive because most of Japanese people don't understand English, and also Japanese speakers are like 98% of the population.
But I share the feeling with you, as I'm a Japanese who live in America but I aspire to have a good command of Portuguese, German and Russian.

Almost all Asian societies don't use the phrase (or their linguistic equivalent) of " I love you" as openly as Americans. Probably it's the mindset that actions speak louder than words that allow us to express love in a 1000 different ways than just a verbal declaration.
I've got a really good friend who lives in shanghai and she was surprised by the fact, that in Germany we don't say "I love you" (ich liebe dich) to our friends but "I like you" (ich mag dich). So it seems that it depends on the country.

Being thrifty is definitely NOT applicable to American culture in general. That's not to say it's completely materialistic, but that all depends on what your socioeconomic background was. Also, diy is another case by case thing. I don't know too many people that build their own furniture, but as a crafty person I do a lot of crafts like knitting. Those kind of skills are seen as "cool" and valuable, but they're not super common or anything. Just fyi

+LilyLaya I totally agree. I prefer to buy my clothes new, mostly because I'm a hard to fit size (US 10 petite, 5.5 shoe), and can never find anything in a thrift shop. It's also more effort to go thrift shopping and I don't have the time to devote to driving to the store, shopping for a couple hours, and driving home; when I can just hop on my computer find something I like in 30 minutes and order it with free shipping and returns. That being said, I totally DIY a lot of things, and I bake and cook from scratch daily. I think it comes down to what you want to spend your time and money on. I'd rather spend it on my hobbies (baking, cooking), and my business (letterpress).
+LilyLaya Thirft shopping, buying clearance and basically only buying things you actually need is my motto. I have clothes that I've had since 8th grade that still fit me. I came from a family that was poor, but they used layaway and savings to make my sisters and I feel like we were rich. I'm used to constant gifts and celebrations while growing up and a crowded house due to my family being hoarders, but in my case, I barely buy anything anymore except essentials because I feel like I've got everything I need.
I think this is generational. Everyone I know that's my age and younger tries to spend as little as possible, except maybe on food.
DIY and thrift shopping were very very common where I grew up (pretty rural area)! I think it really depends on where you live--when I moved to the city, people were really amazed at the sort of things I would do normally like building things myself rather than purchasing them, and I started adopting more city-pron-habits as well.

With the English "I love you", it's really a matter of connotation. In many other languages, there are different expressions for different nuances, and in English, there's pretty much "I love you" and then there's nothing really (unless you want to count in "I like you", but I don't remember anyone really using that?). It's always fascinating to see how different cultures and languages work in different aspects, so to me this is so much fun!
In English the "strength" of I love you normally depends on the atmosphere or your tone of voice
In Germany there's "Ich hab dich lieb" (I think it is nearest to something like "You're dear to me") which is used for family and friends while "Ich liebe dich" (I love you) is used by/for lovers. But it can also be used for friends etc. depending on the tone. Ich hab dich lieb is more common, though.

I watch a lot of series and I often got confused because there of couples being together for a few episodes and after one of them said "I love you", the other one suddenly got uneasy and said "I'm not prepared for this" and broke up - which is why I thought that "I love you" is actually quite 'powerful' in English.
In German we say "Ich liebe dich" really early in a relationship - well sometimes even to confess to someone. Similar in French when you say "je t'aime".
Despite English being a language that has a lot of synonyms, it also is a language that relies heavily on tone of voice and context. For instance "What are you doing?" could be construed as mild curiosity, an accusation, concern, or even teasing just by context and tone. "I love you," can mean a million and one things like; "you are really cool," platonic/familial love, "I admire you greatly," or "I really appreciate this thing that you did for me" (like if someone save you from a spider.) Romantic "I love you"s are SUPER heavy, at least a first at first.
I cherish you, be safe, I'll pray for you, I care about you, you mean so much to me, you're the best thing in my life, you've helped me grow, forever & always, etc. We have a billion ways to say "I love you" without saying it. Context and atmosphere and personal vibe is everything.

Wildfan95 More like 2 dialects(not to mention Australian, South African, and maybe Kiwi), but even then, each country has regional dialects that make calling any one dialect "American" or "British" a bit of a stretch.
I think it's important to remember that these two women are the kind of people ready to meet another culture head on and to travel away from their home. They also say they love to travel and often travelers will be open-minded people and less materialistic because they constantly have to pick what's important to bring along.
So obviously not all american/western women would make wives like this :) I know a lot who would love to buy new things.
But thrift stores are a thing for sure.
Lythya I agree, I also think it's more so a traveller thing! We want the experience, not an item without meaning. But I also know people that love having brand new things and the best of everything.

I'm a 16 year old girl in England and my dad's teaching me how to fix cars so that when it breaks down when I'm older, i won't have to pay to fix it like my dad does now. It's like that here too

It sucks because here in America a lot of places try to rip you off (especially women) because they assume you don't know anything about cars. If I go by myself they give me huge lists of things that "need" to be fixed, but when my dad or grandpa goes they just fix what needs to be done... It's so frustrating. I tried to learn as much as I could from my dad, too!

I have Japanese female friends and they also don't wash their hair every day, unless it's super short, because it tends to dry out the hair too much. Stripped of its natural oils, my hair gets really dry, brittle and lifeless. In fact, almost every woman I know recoils in horror when asked if they shampoo their hair every day. For me, personally, I take a shower every day, sometimes even 2x a day if I go to the gym, but I always put my hair up into a shower cap. I'll generally shampoo it 2x/week.

We don't say "I love you" in Finnish culture either, I don't think I've ever told my parents that I love them or maybe that's just our family... lol, but yeah it's not something that you hear on a everyday basis in Finland.

Yeah I'm a mixed race American and I wash my hair every other day, otherwise it will be really dry and puff up like cotton candy lol. as I understand Asians tend to have more natural oil in their hair so they wash it everyday to keep it from getting too oily?
Keep in mind, the comment was about taking a bath, not showering. Most Americans shower daily, if not more than once a day. Taking a bath on the other hand is far far more rare. Most Americans take baths to relax, not necessarily to get clean. Anecdotally, the only days I don't shower is likely a saturday/sunday if I'm just having a lazy day around the house and don't leave to do something/work out.
Although in this case, I am wondering if they are using "Shower" and "taking a bath" interchangeably. Jun said Rachel takes a bath every other day. That's a lot of baths still. Plus I think at a certain age, baths becomes showers for everybody just because baths takes longer.
It would usually depend on the person. Like me, I take a shower every night to wash off all the sweat and such from the day and I like to go to bed clean. Whereas my cousin showers in the morning to wake up and doesn't shower in the evening.

I didn't expect any of the DIY stuff to be weird hahah! Whatever though, being able to build stuff yourself, especially as a woman, is pretty badass so that's a pro in my book. The hair thing I think is not just strange to Japanese men but even to men in western countries too. Males tend to get greasier than females so naturally they wash their hair more. So when they hear that a lot of us don't wash our hair every day, they think we must be greasy and gross but in reality we're not. They never understand how damaging it is either ^_^ I can go about 4 days without washing my hair and people are always shocked when I tell them I didn't wash it that morning, but I usually wash it every second day. Do Japanese people just have super strong hair or something!? I think my friends in Japan washed and dried their hair every day and it was so thick and strong. Mine will get extremely damaged if I wash it and heat style it every day.
SakuraKisetsu Yeah! Even guys in America seem to have "thicker", hardier hair than women a lot of the time. Plus their hair is so short that I think it just grows out and gets cut before anything can happen to it. Sometimes I think about how nice it'd be to have hair that dries five minutes after finishing my shower... haha!
Japanese hair seems crazy strong. I always get so frustrated that their hair falls perfectly flat and beautiful while mine is an insane frizzy mess, blowing around in the wind! Jun describes my hair as "fluffy" lol
Rachel & Jun That's so cute hahahah, "fluffy". Mine looks fairly similar to yours if I don't style it, it gets poofy and wavy. I got a straight perm while I was in Japan which helped with the frizziness but didn't really straighten it at all, it just relaxed it a bit. My friends in Japan got straight perms and it was like.... why. It looks like the same. It's naturally pin straight and smooth to begin with, I couldn't understand why they paid like $200 to damage their hair with almost no result hahaha.

I got confused about the 'not showering every day' thing. I shower at least once a day but wash my hair every other day or every 3 days. Since I cycle to work and back I'll shower twice a day Monday-Friday. I didn't realise everyone was so different!
We all have schedules on showering depending on what we need I think. Since I'm from a tropical country it's really hot so most shower almost everyday to cool down, but some don't. It really depends on our need :D

Faylina Meir I used to be like that! When I first started dating Jun, I preferred him to be clean shaven. And then... I have no idea what happened. It just suddenly switched, and suddenly I thought he looked sexy and manly with stubble. But yeah that stuff is crazy painful sometimes haha! I do not appreciate stubble face rubs.

I remember telling a western guy that I don't shower every day and he threw a bitch fit about it. I guess it's different for some girls... I mean I have an office job and I don't workout every day so I don't really get sweaty and gross during an average day. It's also proven that women don't sweat as much as men. And then there's the effort of showering but keeping your hair dry.
Tipsylou I actually think the more you wash your sweat off and clean yourself with soap the more you'll sweat ... whenever I'm camping I only do 'top and tail' washing with warm water (basically armpits and private parts) and somehow don't stink after a week of this. It's weird. I always expect to be a filthy mess but nope!
+Tipsylou I mean... shower caps exist. They've existed for a very long time... They are made specifically to keep hair dry while you shower or bathe

I can't imagine not bathing everyday. I'm a very sweaty, oily person and for the reason I'm very fastidious about being clean and when I'm not, I get very upset.

I got embarrassed when they brought up the hair washing. I wash my hair about twice a week. My hair is so curly and so fair, I just can't do it any more than that, despite showering daily. But I don't even admit that to my American friends even though it's common to not wash hair every day. Japanese hair is typically far more strong and resilient than European hair. I envy the ability to wash it a lot.

American women adapt to whoever they are with and wherever they are. If they moved to a foreign country, and everything is expensive, they will make do and be resourceful. If she doesn't work, she will not understand money and will expect the man to pay for everything.
Also, there is a difference between dating and MARRIAGE. When an American woman is dating, she will expect a man to show how much he cares through material things. But when two people are married, American women tend to focus on what is practical, especially if she has the most income.

I understand not wanting to use a hair dryer or shampooing/wetting your hair everyday because it damages the hair. BUT you can bathe everyday without either wetting your hair or shampooing it. What damages the hair is shampoo so you can wet it. Though if I go out and there's smoke or I'm just out in public exposed to vehicle belches, shampooing the hair is a must even if it will destroy/dry it.

For me every time I've tried letting my hair get wet in the shower without washing it, it comes out really oily and weird, so I keep that dry, but yeah...
nenabunena You do not need to take a shower everyday. It is better for you if you do not. 2-4 days is okay depending on your climate and activity level (however some people are so sweaty/active that everyday may be best). When it comes to hair you can go for longer than 4 days.

It takes more time for it to become oily and greasy.
There is absolutely no need to wash it or even wetting it when it's already clean, especially that I have thick hair which takes me time to dry and style.
I definitely won't wash it everyday. My hair is healthy, looks good and smells good.

I think Jun's right to save saying " love you" for profound moments- I've just watched the Emmy's on tv tonight, and every other award winner was telling various people they worked with that they loved them. Now, don't get me wrong- I like my colleagues, but I certainly don't love them. The phrase has been somewhat devalued by many in the US.
Yes. And I especially can't stand when ppl say "I love you" after a fight in a resentful, incredulous way, just to shut the other one up. That's not love.

Reading through the comments it's funny to see some people appalled at not washing hair. For those who wash it every day, of course it gets greasy faster, you have to train it not to by not washing it as often, so it takes some time and will go through a really greasy stage, but it's better for your hair because shampoo strips it of essential oils and does a lot of damage if you use it a lot. And no, unwashed hair does not smell....I don't know why it would lol
