Lesson Taught by: Carl Brown
jesus christ a few months ago tried this song, and i coudn´t even pass the half part of the intro, then i realized how weak my fingers were, i started exercising techniques, leaks instead of learning songs, pushing my limits everyday, then yesterday this lesson came into my mind, i was afraid at first, but when i started playig it i was amazed how i could nailed it just in a hour. now i dont even wanna see the next video hahah, i dont want to ruin my happiness right now. thank you so much for you lessons :)
What kind of finger strengthening exercises did you do?
Please share!
I really need your help right now!
@@eknathsravanam3967 practice the hendrix chord embelishments every day. Thats the hardest part.
This is my first time learning it, i started about 10 months ago and i didn’t find this so hard, i also do exercises like chromatic patterns, finger stretching, etc... I’m about 6-7 minutes in but had to sleep due to school.
Wow! just the creative vision to compose this work, aside from the technical mastery to execute it, really illustrates Hendrix's brilliance. It is no wonder he has influenced every generation of rock guitarists since. Thankyou Carl! you have made my life as a guitar hack a better place.
This just happened to me funnily enough. I tried about four times and failed in the first few bars, but now I pretty much learned the whole intro in an hour. I purposely tried to learn some easier but still, Hendrix influenced tracks, like John Mayers Gravity along with some SRV licks to build up my speed and right-hand technique to give me the techniques i needed to learn this.
This lesson is really good, I mean, there are a lot of ways to play this intro, but this is probably the most iconic one. The explanations are really well-made, the only thing missing is some recap from point to point. It would be really useful to hear how it sounds as you add the parts to it, just to give some backup for those (like me) who had to stop and check out how it all sounds every new step. Anyway, great job.
For those reading this now, try learning a bit, then listen to Hendrix play it on the track (Keep in mind he's tuned down), then try playing it like hendrix. Rinse and Repeat
I'm not sure the part on the B minor is correct. Maybe the melody is a little bit different. The rest is pretty much perfect
I try to watch as many different lessons on whatever song I want to learn and no two are alike. Then I pick the one that is most helpful and go back to it but, I still find parts in most all of them and switch it out and then go back to the favorite and play along with it.I almost always pick songs/solos way above my abilities and learn the notes if it is too fast and play the notes slowly and as much speed up and then I can see the progress after memorizing the solo.It helps me when I start another one and all the pieces fall together. You probably have learned it and more by the time
you read this.Happy Playing!!

You my hero
Panu Mattila thx man
I'm sitting here, waiting for the sections to be laid out, and here you are being awesome.
You are the hero we don't deserve
Not all heroes wear capes
A performance of this song would be really helpful to see how it ties together and to have a cover in standard tuning, great lesson
Jimi was on a different level for sure....this proves it....he always had a guitar in his hands exploring it's musical possibilities....great job with this tutorial
I took only two hours to learn.
For a song like this, and a player like me (inexperienced), this is one of the best lessons I've ever seen
2 days of practise got me like 15 seconds into the song, its a great song and challenging to learn, if you like me havent been introduced to a style of playing like this one, Im pretty good at solos and other stuff but this is "beyond me", little by little and in no time i will be able to play this spotless, thank you for the lesson, great job !!!
Idemo u Hrvatsku!
i been sitting my ass there back and forth watching rewinding for almost 5 hours , i am almost there, thank you , u r the man .
I've watched this vid at 0.25 slow motion speed for 3 months.
I think I am there.
@goblingoblingoblin maybe you should fuck off
ShipBuilding you learn?
@fred nothing wrong with setting a goal to learn a hard song as long as that's not the only thing your doing.
@fred i said, I think I'm there. and i am there.
Never really bought into the hype and worship some people have for Jimi / SRV, but damn that's a ton of technical playing and flavour packed into one little intro. I can definitely see why so many people were inspired by their playing.
Just a general comment here. I've been playing for 30+ years, and I've noticed that just about any yahoo with a smart phone can (and does) post "how to play song x" videos on this site, whether they're qualified or not.
I always look for your lessons first because you decode each song and the concepts and context behind the riffs in a way that, to me, usually gets at what makes that song cool or interesting to play around with and absorb, rather than just regurgitate what's on the record (which can also be fun...).
At any rate, just wanted to say thanks for helping me expand my fretboard horizons in such a painless way.
Pro player gig warrior here, many years..heard this on the radio recently and it stuck in my head and found this..good breakdown but a full pass through before the tutorial would be helpful to get the passage organized n your head.
check the description for his new lesson. goes over every section of the song with him playing the part before he starts teaching.
You've a very calming voice & hence it's very easy to listen to & follow instructions without being pressured on. You're a natural teacher & can take up any subject matter. Thanks a heap .
I have one vid left. Should be ready soon! Thanks for watching!
I like this guy he's usually straight to the point and doesn't like drone on about how the song was made he just shows the notes and the ryhthmic patterns which is good
I’ve been learning this song for well over 2 years. At least the intro. I’ve played it wrong since the beginning, and coming back I realize I am playing a wrong note in EVERY phrase. Jimi was a god
17 minute lesson just on the intro. Oh man, this gonna take awhile...
Get the chord progression down and do your own enbellishments... make it fun
I agree with Russ. It's traditional to simply learn the intro since it repeats and is such a resolving progression of chords; learn the embellishments (solo elements) and then to give it your own flair, just keep the dive bomb and the wailing (16th fret high e string) G solo note intros.
Took me 4 days to get it down pretty well. Theres so many variations its really worth it. The solo is its own beast but my god does it hit the heart strings so well i gotta know it. Hope you had luck with the licks man!
Jeigh Neither nothing beats these voicings if you only know cowboy chord too ! Sooo soo good
@@overtonesnteatime198 how long have you been playin guitar :D
Ok! You taught me “Lenny” and I have to say I am pretty good at it and my lifetime musician friend said to me “you ready for “little wing”? You have to remember I started to learn what lead was about because of your teaching talent just 18 months ago and I am 62. When I get this one down a few months from now, it will be a celebration bc talented friends of mine will be in awe of what I have been able to accomplish bc of you. Sooooo, wish me luck in our journey together. Ty, your the best instruction online teacher.
There are just tons of videos on how to play Little Wing, but I can tell you - as a fellow musician - I haven't heard anyone better than yours. You not only get every note accurately, but you get the innate sense of his rhythm as well. Really great video.
There are a lot of guitar players out there, who can walk with a guitar, quite a few of them can even run, but if you want to fly, then you have to learn this all time classic.
And the glistening light of Guitar Gods will enlighten your wretched existence for a big moment. ;-)
i think this is the most accurate example of learning this song out there. However, I second the motion that you play the intro through its entirety so we can marvel and appreciate what our goal is. Please add it.
Great job taking it slow~! Hendrix was known to play this differently live & the song lends itself well to some variation. Probably one of the best intermediate songs as it teaches a LOT of guitar technique & "fluid flowing feel".
Yeah the solo will be posted on Tuesday. :)
"Today I'll progress this song!"
1 hour later
"I'll never do this"
+napukapu exactly xD
I'm slow as fuck !
consistency my friend
i never played guitar before
just got one
I WILL LEARN THIS SONG!!!! YEAH1!!!!!
me too im going crazy but i will keep trying be nice if i had teacher right here
Don't worry dude the first step at being good at something is sucking at something hell I sucked when I first started out now I can play through it
This is by far the best guitar lesson channel
I feel as though it is easier learning when a section is played in the actual song setting, going over it all at once is overwhelming
Yep, it will have 3 lessons total. Second one is going up today and the last tomorrow. :)
I'm sitting here playing jimi hendrix on my fender - life ambition achieved. I salute you - thanks!
Excellent. Be nice if you could play it through once (before the lesson).... Just sayin...
Willie Opie All of my lessons from the past year or more I play it before I teach it. This is an older video. Thanks for watching!
If you could edit it in and do a separate upload---it would be beyond golden! Either way, thanks for the upload--this is the best instruction I've found on RUclips for this song
Love it
I was about to ask the same
Here ya go ruclips.net/video/ru_mlNYjBOU/видео.html
Personally I like your teaching method. Looks like many aren't aware they can download Realplayer for free and download this video. Then they can back up any amount and walk their way through the lesson. Some great teachers here on RUclips andyou are one. Thanks so much!
I'm addicted to your videos. You got me through Sultans of Swing and now I'm tackling another favorite... Liked and subbed. Keep up the good work!
"And that's it for the intro..." Jimi was a better guitar player in that intro than I have ever been at anything my whole life!
Mate, I love your lessons! I`m a beginner and what I like about it he most is u don`t cut corners and make it easy, plus I can see u know what you`re talking about. All I can say is bravo! and keep them coming! Can we have more Hendrix please?
I just wish you'd done this in e flat so I can go back and forth and play along with the guitar god himself but thank you so much! Ima be that one guy at guitar center who can rock this intro now!!!!!
I almost tuned half step down on another guitar so I could change out when needed but I haven't yet.
This is the best lesson for this song! I tried several. I love Marty to death but this was just way easier for me. Thanks for all the time and hard work. It’s greatly appreciated by many!
thx for teaching carl... having difficulties with some of the phrases in the beginning i'm some steps further. For beginners: check out the Marty Music Version, it seems easier to me. You can still learn this version. Good luck!
Excellent ! Really nicely done. And by not playing it all the way thru for us, you demand that we put it together for ourselves. Talk about empowerment. Thank you.
Awesome lesson! quick note to anyone playing along with the original recording, tune a 1/2 step down (low E is Eb)
4 Minutes in and i am done, try again in 6 months.
this is actually how my learning process goes for songs 😂
LOL
Good lesson. I saw the comment about playing each part through all the way. I agree. Playing the song slowly will allow people to feel more accomplished with it.
One of the few lessons I have been able to follow compared to other peoples vids. Thank you for explaining each note I found the talking helpful the lesson is not too long for those who are learning I am so grateful that you have taken the time to do this thank you so much!
ur just gr8 thnx for ur tutorial videos which r very helpful coz u do full song with solo, verse n intro n thnx for ur song selection which is just perfect u know wat we want to learn....these songs r classic n legendry so thnx once again for all ur videos and keep them comin...
How can 33 seconds be so difficult
Best Jimi Tutorial EVER!!!
Fantastic lesson. As are all your lessons. Very clear and concise. This is helping me both appreciate the subtlety of Hendrix's playing and even teaching me to get something that sounds vaguely like it..!!
Man, I can't thank you enough for your lessons. Hopefully I'm going to purchase some lessons real soon. Keep it up, mate. Carlos - from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
yeah the jimi hendrix lessons are back!! Thank you! You are a great guitar teacher! You rock!
you got the best guitar lessons on youtube.
The one song I always wanted to learn. I think it’s time. Thanks!
I learned a great deal from your tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to create it, and taking us through each phrase so carefully and patiently. You're awesome!
The first 3 sounds are what most people including Pro guitar players get wrong. This is 100% correct Thank You Carl Brown
Well done. Thanks for not tuning down - that's a PIA. Very detailed - that's a good thing.
I like your lessons. You probably know that not everyone learns the same. I think I have minor OCD so your style of teaching every single note works really well for me. It would be nice if you played the song through in the beginning though. k thanks!

Great lesson but you should ve played the song once through or after every part, just link them, helps to figure out the sound and way of progressing! Anyways, Nice lesson!
Absolutely awesome! Must admit the first time I ever heard it was by SRV...just a beautiful guitar tune
Right when I saw the intro lesson was 17 minutes I knew this was gonna be the battle of the century
I like how Carl mention's it gets a little bit difficult half way through :D I was struggling the whole way! :) Your'e one of the best teachers on youtube Carl, I have learnt many of my favourite tunes from you, thank you very much! 🖖
Just gonna keep it on RUclips, it won't be on the site like the others. :)
I’d like to thank you for this video and your Randy Rhoads solo one! The Tribute album is why I picked up the guitar to begin with!
I have fingers, You have tentacles.
+Tony Robinson Lol don't worry there is an easier way to play it, just google the tab, and viola
Lol...I think you mean 'Voila!' Playing it on the viola must be just as difficult. Thanks I'll check it out.
Tony Robinson haha no problem my bipedal friend
You are right!people with long fingers take it for granted and don't realise what an advantage it is!
He doesn’t even use his thumb that much
Thanks for making me feel young again!
...the good message: that Hendrix stuff ist timeless, like classic music
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Your are the best teacher on youtube, keep on rocking dude!
Thanks for this video - it was really useful
I watch lot of these type of videos and I'm often struck by the length of the fingers that many of the guitarists have (long!!) - which is disheartening for me as my fingers are pretty short.
BUT then I remember Johnny Hiland doesn't have the biggest hands and he's not too bad.. so I guess there's a little hope
Thanks for the refresher! Time to bring this to the stage in a few weeks
hey thanks for not changing your tuning to half down!! finally!!
Dude you make everything so much easier to learn I really appreciate you channel.
Before I get to the bit I left last time. Thanks so much Carl, it really has made a difference to my life in general. Awesome lessons. Bill in England
Hey man , good lesson . It does help to sorta pause a little , show the next phrase , then teach it .
Cool Lesson! Practicing on my acoustic. Will work on this. Thank You!!!
i really enjoy your lessons you make them super easy
A full demo of how it’s done then a brake down would be good but still a informative lesson of a classic tune
I tried to play this song 8 months ago and felt hopeless. Thought I’d never be able to play this, or use my thumb. After at least 450 hrs of practice, I still can’t.
Inspirational
Great! And in standard tunning as well. This piece is so elegant and you translated that :) Thanks so much.
Sometimes, when you go on an effort to correctly explain, I sort of got confused amidst the words, and lost the sense of the fitting of the parts in the whole flow of the music. As a suggestion, you could play fluidly the whole part before/ after disassembling and explaining it. But this isnsubjective and most of all positive criticism: it was the best lesson I found on this song. Grateful for that :)
Great video. Many thanks, finally got the song down, never thought I would be able to learn it.
great lesson ! i think that will be so much better if in the final of the each session you could play session mixing with the last one to make it more clear.
You sir, are a life saver.
Thanks so much for the lessons man. 1st song I am gonna learn on my New Hendrix Strat. Except I can't reach with my thumbs. ...Deyyyy toook myyy tumbs. Chaaalie!!!! will have to barre the chords. Thanks again
I nailed it after 5 hours of practice on my acoustic! Thank you so much for the lesson! :))
I was actually very surprised that it turned out not as bad as I thought. Electric guitar is better anyways :)
Check out the Monte Montgomery version...
I had never heard of Monte Montgomery. He's quite wonderful to listen to. I also listened to his cover of Sara Smile....Excellent! He sure plays that beat up guitar beautifully.
He is a beast on the acoustic.....
Love this bro thank you
Explanation. Wonderful 🎸
Thank you for the lessons. One thing I would suggest in terms of your teaching style is to slowly play the phrases more. You repeat 2-3 notes repeatedly when showing a part and give miniature technique lessons and it often makes it difficult to put it all together. I know beginners would benefit from this, but at the end of a part you’re teaching, how about playing the phrase from start to finish one last time. So we can put it together quicker.
We really need a full video of you playing it ! Please ! If you can take some time to record one that would be incredible
That was really nice! I try to find this version of the song, and i can't.... Maybe you 've got a video of you playing it all the way to the end (without explanations).... That would be really helpful. Thanks!
you've explained this a lot clearer than other lessons here, thanks man!, Hendrix grooves are unique & come so natural.love it 👍
Congratulations for your 1M subscribers
You always do a spot on lesson
Carl I Love your lessons and have learned tons from you. Some of us can not come around the neck and use our thumb. My thumb on my left hand is just too short. It only comes to the bottom of my index finger. It would be nice if you gave alternate ways to play those notes or make a substitution.
jimi was a genius. simple as that.
I think it would help if you said what key the song is in and throw in a tiny bit of theory. I know it helps me understand the tutorial more!!! Thanks for the great videos!!!!
Great video! Very clear and well paced. Finally I can play this thing properly :D
I think it's amazing how someone who supposedly never took lessons, didn't have RUclips, and was self taught created this. I'm just curious what did he do to get so good? I've been playing for 3 years and I feel like with out RUclips and lessons I wouldn't be able to play half as good as I can. How did people learn? Maybe that's why people say now Adays there's so many good guitar players.
It's a long way buddy, 3 years is not so much. All i can say, practice and learn everything you can and, the most important thing, (for me) try to feel what your'e playing.
Like jimi use to focus "Experience" is all. ;)
***** This is totally true and totally overlooked when learning guitar/most things.
David Frame I think it may also have to do with how far you are willing to stretch your mind and creativity. Don't hold back on doing something because its hard or because its not theoreticaly correct you know. and another thing is that guitarists now are so consumed with knowing how to play songs rather then create them, you really can't call someone a guitarist if they can't pick up a guitar and play you something never rehearsed but still sounds like music but don't get me wrong im not saying messing up during this means your not a guitarist because like I said "...something UNREHEARSED..." but yeah nowadays people aren't that good at just playing the guitar in general, its always "can you play little wing? stairway to heaven? smoke on the water?" at the end of the day I think I great guitarist is one that creates as well as he/she covers other great guitar songs.
Hendrix didn't know much theory he knew the minor pentatonic by heart probably but I think he pick up other scales by ear on my opinion he was known to have an amazing ear.
Then again he got tips from local musicians but no one will ever know what they told him could of been the greatest tips of all time lol but, yeah Hendrix for sure didn't know how to read music all though I don't consider sheet music to music theory on my opinion
I love your lessons by the way you were born with the right finger to master the instrument i need some extensions for my short fingers 😂
There's a beautiful version of this song from, the royal albert Hall, almost make you cry, the emotion he conveys..
This is fun - using a Squier Strat and a little Fender Amp -
Hey I'm hearing lots of complaints about stuff that is somewhat easily learnable through learning yellow Ledbetter which is a song based off of this song. It explores pinky use in the g major and other minor shapes and it is how I came to learn this song a little easier
Many thanks for your job brother ;)
really good lesson thanks, could do with a shorter lesson also, its nice to have the detailed version too!
very nice i love this song solo awesome lesson carl as always thankx
Finally it took 3 days to complete this 17 min video
Just started learning guys!!
