There's no reason to have a wild animal in the house if you're not rehabilitating it. Exotic pets get lots of positive attention online but no matter how pampered they are, having it out of their natural habitat is animal abuse, and endorsing trafficking.

@@MusicAndSkittles I bet she died because of the face transplant, the body naturally tries to kill any foreign "body" That gets in the system, that's why these people take immunosuppressants that make sure this immune system kind of goes to sleep, the outcomes are all bad though: - you'll need a new transplant because the medicines are not able to keep the foreign body alive anymore, so you decide to go under surgery, which is not a 100% safe procedure, often it has a 50% possibility of being successful. - you'll need a new transplant, but you don't have the money to afford it, so all you can do is appreciate the time you're left with before your own body kills itself (or more precisely the foreign body). - another way of dying after a transplant is by the medicines themselves which, like I've said, make your immune system weaker and therefore it makes you more likely to die due to other health conditions (these immunosuppressants also increase the risk of getting cancer).
I remember reading into this case and crying my eyes out. Travis wasn’t to blame, and neither was the victim. It hurts my heart knowing two living things ended up getting hurt.
This is why having pets is such a big responsibility. Not only does it require a lot of attention from it's owners and it's a big money investment, but accidents like this is always prone to happening. In my opinion, with buying any exotic animal like this, more than extra precaution should've taken place, especially when you own a 200+ pound chimp. Rest in Peace to everyone in the story, especially both Travis and Sandra. And I know this video was really hard to make for Hannah, but I'm glad she still covered the story.
thank you so much GlasGod. It was pretty hard to relive the story, I can't imagine how hard it was for Charla. The fact that Travis was pretty overweight is also kind of a tip-off....it can be argued that it's animal abuse right there, if you're overfeeding your pet!
In my opinion, just don't get these kinds of exotic animals at all. Maybe some harmless lizards and insects (that won't turn into an invasive species if released), but not a gosh damn lion or chimpanzee.
"He's eating her" That was the part I almost cried bro that's absolutely horrible, I can even imagine the horror she felt AND AM NOT KIDDING I COULD NEVER IMAGINE THE HORROR
Literally and I think Travis also lost family members w Sandra. He knew the family all his life and he lost them too. I feel like all the things going on stacked up on Travis but no one would acknowledge the signs
No one gives the healthcare workers that helped Charla enough recognization. Imagine having to see the pure brutality of what happened to that poor woman. Even with the counseling, I'd have nightmares.
healthcare workers in general deserve more recognition. there was this one EMT on instagram that posted pictures/videos of peoples injuries. me and my friend would always look through their profile because we thought things like that were interesting. the shit i saw was absolutely TERRIFYING. i cant imagine having to see stuff like that every day, especially since i have a very weak stomach😓
It’s because they choose the profession, it’s not like it was just dumped on them no warning. Tons of training and disillusionment is given to paramedics prior to working. They’re some of the most qualified and unaffected by gore and other physical trauma.
Well I’m sure It’s not that surprising as doctors and plastic surgeons have to deal with crush injuries, burn injuries, etc. they are doctors after all.
I feel terrible for everyone involved in this incident. Charla didn't deserve this, Travis didn't deserve this, Sandra didn't deserve this, no one did. It was a truly tragic event.
I remember hearing about this case awhile ago. So horrific. People shouldn't be allowed to own exotic pets like this, they should be in the wild or somewhere safe where a trained professional can handle them with the correct care.
Yessss. I get it if they're rescues or at a sanctuary where we try to give them a safe place or keep them from going extinct. They don't belong in our homes.
I really couldn’t look at her. It was just too gruesome. Im impressed by what they did with her facial reconstruction. Amazing. She’s inspiring and I’m so impressed by the medical team.
This is why you shouldn't take animals out of the wild and into your home, even if their domesticated. Their instincts kick in, they're powerful and dangerous
it seems like a no-brainer that owning undomesticated, 'exotic' animals should be illegal for private citizens. qualified & licensed rescues/rehabilitation centres should be the only places to find these animals besides their natural habitats.
@@HannahTheHorrible the relationship we have, as humans, with animals, needs serious work. it's so discouraging to hear that it's still legal despite this case.
Australia is super strict and it works pretty well. Only native exotics are allowed unless you have extensive training and apply for a license that is quite expensive and register every animal. Even native exotics are heavily monitored if they are potentially dangerous or have potential to be taken from the wild (snakes, lizards, some birds, etc). Of course not everyone follows the rules but it does help in reducing the exotic animal trade.
@@noway8222 that definitely sounds like a much better system, although I must admit I can't see a reason for individuals to have exotic animals in the first place, even if they're native species. still, things aren't black and white, and I'd much rather have Australia's approach than the US one.

It just depends on your definition and if the animals have become mainstream.
I read a more in-depth account of this incident where, apparently, Travis had been showing signs of aggression ever since reaching sexual maturity and his mother dosed him with human-grade Xanax to keep him calm. The trouble is, Xanax makes chimps hallucinate vividly. So when he attacked, Travis was both in a deep state of emotional distress due to grief from the loss of family members, AND violently hallucinating. Idk but just knowing that he was most likely just as scared as the humans involved during the entire incident makes it twice as heartbreaking.
that's so fucked up, even more why we need to let animals live normally, this entire situation is horrific, and its so frustrating to know that it could've been avoided had she just not "adopted" Travis to begin with.
I was about 8 when this happened and my mom and I were watching the Oprah interview with the victim and it traumatized me and I felt so heartbroken for that woman and I tear up every time I hear this story. yea my grandma told me about it right after it happened when i was 8 too knowing full well i had a very intense fear of any and all animals and then a year later she showed me the pictures of charla when she on oprah and that just cemented my fear of animals even more
This story is just disturbing that a family THOUGHT they could raise a chimpanzee like a child. Thought they would never get hurt? Like it’s a wild animal. They want to be free. What happened to her is so sad but I’m not sure what they expected.
Hearing the details about Travis going back to his cage after being shot broke my heart, I cried. Poor baby should never have been in that situation. I feel so bad for Charla, bless her for going through what she did. Her reconstruction looks phenomenal for the time.
I just feel bad for Travis. He never had a chance, literally stolen as a newborn and raises as a human, something he wasnt, and drugged apparently. I mean what did they expect, he was a wild fricken animal.
Obviously its horrible what happened to her but who the hell decides to raise a chimp as a human, have it on several drugs, and keep it in your home?? @@erikak8187 it wasnt. its how his instincts work. that's how wild animals behave in their natural habitats and it's the reason they shouldn't be near humans.
In my country (Norway) there's this one chimpanzee that was kept in a domestic household after his mother in the zoo rejected him and bit his fingers off. The owner of the zoo decided to take the chimp home and raise him (as chimpanzees are a threatened species, he didn't want the poor baby chimp to die). He raised him together with his wife and two daughters and the chimp lived like a normal human child. The zoo owner used Julius (the chimp) as an attraction to the zoo, and while he was small he was allowed to be pet and held by visitors, but after a few years (I think 3 or 5 years, I don't remember, but he was still small in size) he was too dangerous to be kept around humans. They tried to reunite him with some of the other young chimpanzees, but he didn't understand their body language and got scared and wanted to go back to the humans. Julius then escaped multiple times because the cage he was kept in wasn't secured properly, and he attacked people (not as severely as this situation, but he bit a truck driver). Poor Julius got too big to be with the only kind he knew, and got very depressed after getting locked up in this prison-like enclosure, and they debated on wether or not to put him down due to him not living a thriving life. The leader of the chimpanzee "pack" died of old age, and so the zoo owner and keepers decided to put Julius back in to try to make him into the pack leader. It luckily worked out and is still living with his own kind in the chimpanzee pack in Norway. He still gets super happy when he gets to spend time with people through the gates, and love to do "human things" like paint, eat cake, drink soda, and play with human things (clothing, toys, sun glasses, etc.). I'm so glad that the people who worked with Julius actually knew how wild animals should live, and reunited him with his own kind successfully. I wish something similar happened to Travis, as I've seen a similar situation (Julius) have a better ending.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Julius the chimp. And you're really good with how you convey the story. I'm glad this story you shared had a somewhat happier ending.
The fact that Travis stopped attacking to look at Sandra after he'd been stabbed and then crawled all the way back to the house after being shot 3 times just goes to show how much the chimp actually loved her. Every part of this story was tragic.

I wonder that too. It's kind of impossible to prove that that was surely it, I think he was capable of this no matter what. But I can't express how irresponsible it still is!
I've seen what Xanax can do to people. It usually calms people, but also causes massive amounts of confusion. And when anger happens, it is explosive. It can make people say and do things no rational person would do.
i respect the fact that you sympathise with travis bc it’s really unsettling the fact that this people surprised when animals can be animals still blows my mind.
Sometimes it feels like we humans believe we are the absolute pinnacle of life, and that making “lesser” animals more like us is this amazing thing, anthrophising primates especially. In reality they are perfectly fine at the level they are at, why can’t we let animals be animals???
Exactly! Animals act the way they do because they do it to survive! They don’t belong in human environments in the same way that a wolf can’t live like a fish; they aren’t built for it. Travis should have been in a jungle with other chimps, not in a house.
Humans will do that shit to other humans too. Put native kids in schools to act more white. Make autistic children act more "normal". Humans are absolutely discusting creatures at times.
People do this with dogs. Constantly projecting human emotions on to them. When reality is, every single thing they do is for food. That's it. Let's not act like they wouldn't eat you within a day of you dying in your house. Stop treating animals like people. They are not your "fur babies". They are _ANIMALS._
Travis was drugged. He had too much Xanax in his system and just snapped. That's what happens when you raise an animal like a human, yet cannot control them. He needed to be drugged after he got big because he was difficult to handle and, naturally, extremely smart. Travis, although he was raised as a human, is an animal. Of course, he has animal instincts and reasonably has animalistic traits. Regulations need to be set to keep wild animals like Travis safe and in the wild where they belong.
I hate to blame anyone but I’m blaming Sandra for the whole thing. She gave him Xanax, she knew he was pissed off to begin with, she BOUGHT Travis in general, so I am putting the whole thing on her.
Listen I don’t care if it’s an animal. If that thing is hurting/to the point of killing someone even though I know there animals and it’s on instinct, I’m grabbing something to kill the animal with no questions asked. I’m sad for the lady to the point where tears are forming. I could give less of a shit about the chimpanzee.
Yeah apparently she gave him Xanax to calm him down because he was like a teen and was aggressive so he was going thru a lot of emotional distress and he was hallucinating :(
You shed a lot of light on this story. This was so tragic and so many components to this heartbreaking story. You really handled this so delicately and the sentiments you expressed align with mine perfectly. This was so sad. The animal was simply too large for them to take on that kind of risk.
I don’t think the toy triggered him. Male chimps are very aggressive. Aggression is a common part of the chimpanzee behavior, whether it's between or within groups.
Chimps only “love” mama when they’re small. Travis looked big and old enough to understand the alpha male mindset. You bring him food when hes hungry. Not the other way around. And im sure travis knows that. He knows he is the alpha. And as an alpha, he can smack whoever tf he wants in his mind. If a female is dumb enough to challenge him…. Well, look what happened. He took something as a challenge and went full alpha.
@@HannahTheHorrible I think it was also a combination of the drugs and alcohol in his system as well. Xanax can make chimps hallucinate and he was apparently pumped full of them by Sandra.

This is just one of many reasons why WILD ANIMALS SHOULD STAY IN THE WILD. They aren’t meant to be house pets. Also monkeys are really scary, personally I would much rather leave them in the wild. Only the small ones are cute, but still shouldn’t be pets.
@@wenzies Dude- do you wanna own a monkey that could rip your limbs off of your torso? A smaller monkey is cute and is more safe but having a big monkey is unsafe. I wouldn’t risk it. I’d keep the monkey until it gets really big.
I feel so bad for Sandra for living such a horrible life, NOT excusing her actions, but dude. That’s horrible. I’m also very proud of Charla for keeping her hopes up and staying positive!! Also, Rip Travis.
I'm sad she lost her family, but that's about where the pity ends. Travis was basically abused under her and her husband's care, probably because they didn't know how to properly take care of a chimpanzee.
In my mind, you can blame anyone for this all-around tragedy but those who tore him from his mother followed by the family who bought him. Great video, Hannah! 💜✌️
Yeah I can't help but agree. The breeder is the real villain here, but I have to question anyone willing to spend $50k on an animal that is not meant to be a pet.
This is why I'm SCARED of chimps. Like, I can't even look at them without feeling uncomfortable. I don't find them cute anymore. At all. Edit: I mean, the babies are cute, I guess, but as soon as they grow up...hell no. I know this really isn't Travis' fault. They should never have owned him as a pet. Chimps belong in the wild for a reason.
what i think really makes his death sad, is that he was essentially their kid and everyone just saw travis as child/teenager that got along with everyone
@Might_Nare, I feel like using that kind of terminology [referring to an animal as _kid,_or _son_ ] only adds to the disturbing vibe that this story just oozes.. Not only does it help push the boundaries of anthropomorphism firmly into the realm of distaste, but it also betrays somewhat of a blasé attitude regarding the language surrounding our constituent sanctity of human *souls*
@@ArtOfficialKreations well, i meant that the town and sandra, plus anyone else who knew them personally, would’t ve seen travis more of a child than an exotic animal. and that’s why his death seem more sad/disturbing, because so many people didn’t see him as a wild animal that could’ve snapped any second, and then he did. and although it’s sad, more people have seen the consequences of keeping a wild animal as a “pet”, thanks to this story
@@lulucohen6889 you’re the only one being ignorant I don’t care what that animal was to her. He deserved to be with his mother in the wild having a happy life. Instead some nutcase bought the poor thing and he died a tragic death.
I may be wrong here, but the “new haircut” thing makes no sense to me. Monkeys are hella smart. Plus if Travis knew her since he was a baby, wouldn’t he have seen her face? Of course the toy could have been a provoking factor here, but it feels like more to me.
Animals can be kind of wishy washy. Chimps are naturally territorial animals that will attack each other if provoked, and have even been known to commit cannabalism. I think the Elmo might have unsettled him, like he thought she was stealing his toy, so even if he did recognize her, he probably got pissed. Also, chimps who get aggressive also fight OTHER chimps, who are usually as strong as they are and can take a hit. It’s likely Travis was so close to the women that he assumed they were chimps, too, and treated them as such, without understanding that they were a lot weaker.
So I know a tiny bit about how chimps process visual information. Their working (very short term memory) is way faster than ours. It’s called the cognitive trade off hypothesis. We have more complex brains, but the chimp brain is still uniquely adapted to survive in it’s environment. Furthermore, chimps have to make decisions faster and rely more on instinct to assess threats in nature. Chimpanzees are terrifying warriors and are capable of rough group attack strategy. Travis’ brain evolved to do the exact same thing. My guess: in an interpersonal interaction with a human, the basic difference in stimulus-response time and threat assessment increases the likelihood of miscommunication in this kind of situation. Think about this as well; chimps don’t change their appearances like that. When Jane Goodall first arrives at Gombe to study them, they were extremely weary of her. Once she’d been accepted, the apes were fascinated by her pale features. Looking at it for that way, I think it’s very plausible that this change in her appearance would have been enough to cause confusion, especially in a state of stress. I hope this was helpful information!
Even if he still recognized her, it was probably very confusing, even terrifying or traumatic. The first time my husband shaved his beard my daughter wouldn’t unlock the door for him. She was 7 and he was in his very distinctive work uniform. He may have known it was her and distrusted her for changing like that.
Holy fuck I can’t even imagine seeing Charla directly after the attack. Must’ve been horrifying. Monkeys have always scared me for some reason. It’s a stupid “fear” of mine and the thought of being tore at and just being ripped apart by one is terrifying. Like the force of him to be able to rip her to pieces like that is disturbing. But at the same time poor Travis . He was afraid. He’s a wild animal that shouldn’t have been in a human home to begin with. Even dogs have there moments when they snap for seemingly “no reason” Travis shouldn’t have been put there and poor charla was there at the house at a bad time.
Sometimes I feel scared because of the similarity to humans. I don't know when I see a lion's paw i see a animal but when I see a Monkey hand it's really chilling to me because it's has so much resemblance to humans idk
@@kathi9458 It shouldn't scare you, we're literally primates ourselves, we just have a higher degree of intelligence and opposable thumbs. My theory is that Travis got more aggressive after the family member died one by one and then Sandra gave him the Xanax and probably alcohol to make him more passive/calm but those two had the total opposite side effect which made Travis aggressive, irritated and agitated which sadly follows the attack of her friend. It’s a really tragic story that shows us humans that we should always be aware of what our actions can cause or what they can lead to.
I gave my dog Valium (under veterinary prescription) for her fear of thunderstorms and it had the reverse effect on her too- she was not at all aggressive but was more anxious and wouldn’t stop pacing, it was horrible. She wasn’t dangerous at all, but I can see how human drugs can have paradoxical effects on animals.
I can not overstate this enough, we have a language barrier between us and animals. We can interpret what we think they are trying to communicate with us, and knowing body language for the species is /helpful/ but it is NOT GARUNTEED. Exotic animals are beautiful, and most of the time they're lovely, but they are not pets for the average household. Even guineapigs and Rabbits are considered exotic pets and require specialised care, homes etc. Animals are not for us to toy around with, I have two dogs, I love them more than life itself, but they are still dogs at the end of the day. With all the training in the world and good intentions that doesn't erase their instincts.
Interesting Fact: Chimpanzees are one of the few animals that are kill on sight in the event of an escape at zoos. The reason is because they are exceedingly violent, fast, and tranquilizing them only angers them off more and by the time it kicks in, someone could be seriously hurt or worst. The fact that zoos would rather tranquilize big cats and bears and not chimps says something.

@@MusicAndSkittles I bet she died because of the face transplant, the body naturally tries to kill any foreign "body" That gets in the system, that's why these people take immunosuppressants that make sure this immune system kind of goes to sleep, the outcomes are all bad though:
- you'll need a new transplant because the medicines are not able to keep the foreign body alive anymore, so you decide to go under surgery, which is not a 100% safe procedure, often it has a 50% possibility of being successful.

Exactly! Animals act the way they do because they do it to survive! They don’t belong in human environments in the same way that a wolf can’t live like a fish; they aren’t built for it. Travis should have been in a jungle with other chimps, not in a house.

@@ArtOfficialKreations he was a child to her... dont be ignorant
@Fax Machine yup! Sandra was drugging him as he got more aggressive in his later years
So I know a tiny bit about how chimps process visual information.
Humans can have trouble with new hairstyles too, children OFTEN do, as do many adults on the spectrum.
12:52 I can hear the sadness in your voice. I’m proud of you for being so strong during this ❤️
this could’ve all been avoided if Sandra just settled for a dog instead of a chimpanzee
Not when the dog is a chihuahua those creatures are a demon but in smaller form

We're warm blooded animals, it's important to remember that because really, the differences are fewer than the similarities between humans and most other mammals. It's silly to fear the fact that we're maybe not as complex as you think we are.
Wayy off topic I love your pfp ❤
Well i couldnt sleep nicely after i watched a vid about fnaf
what’s the time stamp?
i was okay until she said "he's eating her" i almost cried , dear god ... that's so absolutely horrific .. do chimps EAT meat ? i had no idea . that just absolutely takes it to another level , i dont know .
but yeah , it's really awful that people think it's okay to have these kind of animals in their home ....
Yes, they do eat meat. Chimpanzees are omnivores
Yes, they do. They even sometimes engage in cannibalism if they kill a member of another pack.
Chimpanzees are actually our closest living relatives, and they absolutely eat meat. Horrifyingly, some groups of chimpanzees have even learned to form hunting parties with spears the same way we used to.
Technically every animal would eat meat if they absolutely had to.
Chimps will intentionally target a human's fingers/face/genitals in order to disable them as much as possible. It's actually really horrible
Oprah was really HEARTLESS in here interview this girl in this video talking about this is very kind and im glad she didn't say she was disturbing because it's sad im glad she didn't just say oh it's horrifying she had compassion
I just watched the evil stick video and I can’t stop watching these videos
Same!
Same lol

I'm glad that despite all of us being complete strangers, we can all agree on this 🤣
I bet Travis was trying to protect his owner and got confused, it’s really sad. He should not have been anyone’s pet.
Yeah I speculate that he was acting territorial and got confused on why he was being attacked. Also didn't recognise the woman that took his things
@@digimonalvatrax2738 doesnt matter people who keep wild animals including dogs deserve things like this, humans are suppose to be smart enough to know things like these aren't normal.
@@EpicGamer-dj7dm so the lady that got her face torn off and ate deserved it because her friend had a chimp? logic
@@user-vr5hn1ed9u you make it sound like she was forced to be with them, she voluntarily went knowing something like this might happen.
@@EpicGamer-dj7dm if you watched the full video, she was holding an elmo toy and he thought she took it away from him and started mauling her. you make it sound like she hit him and yelled at him and kicked him in the shin
Xanax makes chimps hallucinate horribly so it was likely having the opposite effect
This just proves they should NOT be held captive . Just like any other animal oFC , but especially not them.
@@mxfene I feel like the only reason animals, especially great apes, should be kept in captivity is if they were raised in captivity to begin with, are being rehabilitated, for conservation efforts, or if they are being researched.
@@mxfene well most animals in zoos are there because they are rescued
@@mxfene while i agree that animals shouldn’t be taken away from the wild. It is better for animals born in zoos to stay in zoos. They don’t develop a lot but from their parents genes, even then, they have little chance of surviving in the wild.
Captivity animals are categorized by that since they are literally born in the zoo.
This is why I hate Hollywood movies with kids and people bonding with wild animals like they're best friends because they 'trust' them.
"this dangerous lion is my best friend hes like my house cat" cool keep him in a sanctuary
Yeah... I don't think it teaches kids to truly respect the animals, they just see them as toys
This remind me to a lion and orca movie in my childhood
@@clairobscur1413 exactly, when I was kid I actually think if has a wild animal as pet is very intresting but when I was older I start to watch how the wild animal actually life. Like how the lion literally rip a zebra's back, that's really terrifying.
Yeah but it's a movie so...?
"Travis tries going back to his cage." Dude...... that hurt me.
Everytime I think of it, I just imagine a dog doing the same thing, and it kills me inside, cuz all this could've been prevented if Travis was left alone in the wild like he should've been
Fun fact about this story, possibly the only thing fun about this story, is that it inspired the movie “nope”
Poor Travis, taken away from his mother just at 3 days old, forced to be literally a human being and later on killed because he was forced into sometching he never wished for. My prayers going to Charla and proud that she’s still staying strong even after what’s she’s been through.
