There has to to be some baseline when it comes to defending. Defending is done as a team, up and down every table in every league. If you can't or don't defend as a team, you ship goals. I still can't discern if it's ten Hag being poor tactically or the players having zero tactical intelligence. Most diplomatic answer will be somewhere in the middle. But I trust ten Hag is a tactically astute coach with his proven record at Ajax (people were drooling over his Ajax and often remarked that's how Man Utd should play). The players, well, they've proven record of frustrating 3 previous managers and 1 current manager.

The weird thing to me is that last season Ten Hag turned Man U around and they got 3rd place and Champions League when all the pundits (and me) said it would take years to sort out the mess. Now that he has actually been able to bring in a few of his desired players, they are actually playing worse.

    • @souradeepsengupta95
      @souradeepsengupta95 9 месяцев назад +22

I simply don't understand how he seemed so clear-eyed and decisive last season and is floundering like this now. I can only imagine Casemiro had one phenomenal season left in his legs, and Ten Hag made full use of that. Because the system isn't very different than it was last. Also Rashford, whose drop off a cliff I do not understand -- in terms of goals and assists, he always alternates between good and bad in consecutive seasons, but he has always run his socks off. He is now the worst presser in the league probably.

    • @iankemp1131
      @iankemp1131 9 месяцев назад +8

@@souradeepsengupta95 Yes, it is strange isn't it. I've seen it suggested that his system with a high press needs a mobile back 4 and he hasn't got that without Martinez, leaving massive midfield gaps. Interesting point about Casemiro. It seems as if key players are missing and his preferred system doesn't work, he hasn't got a Plan B. With Rashford I wonder if he's simply fallen out of love with football. He sometimes gets the inspiration again - as for a period under Ten Hag - but then loses it. Snag is that talent isn't enough at the highest level, you need dedication too, and it doesn't feel as if the Man U atmosphere in recent years has encouraged this. That being said it's amazing how they have pulled out some late comebacks - but also late capitulations.

So what? Ole did the same, Mark Goldbridge said Ole should get a statue if he got top 4. He got 3rd and 2nd the first two seasons, where we thought it would take a decade to replace such a incompetent squad and atmosphere. + a bunch of semi finals and finals with a squad EVEN WORSE then this. With key players constantly injured, and players individually choking in key games to an extent never seen before in proffesional football. This is on Ten Hag, the only redeeming thing about his tenure is the easiest carabao cup run we have seen the last 20 years.

Last year we had the best defense in the league, you could say we overperformed in most departments. This year we could almost never field our 1st team from last year (at least at the back). Not to mention the reluctance of certain players to put in a shift. The manager was cooking something until he ran out of ingredients and until some of them decided to spontaneously rot prematurely. There's only so many things a manager can fix, think about it, we've been in this position at least two more times under different managers. Not even Mourinho survived it, what makes you think whoever we'll bring in next miraculously fixes everything? Players need to go way before the manager, and history has shown us that.

All of them would get the team to defend properly first, then let the quality and speed of their attackers blow teams away on the counter. Rashford, Garnacho, Antony would all benefit from having space in behind to run into.
And before anyone says 'the fans wouldn't accept it', Alex Ferguson did it for years and years. 442, defensively organised, solid structure and let the players do the rest. But you HAVE to be able to defend. You cant expect to have to score three a game to win, because you know you will concede 2. Utds league goal difference is -1. Even Burnley go to Man Utd and get 15 shots. It is so obvious and he still does not fix it. How many chances have to be given away to realise there may be a problem to be fixed.
You are absolutely right about the complete lack of control. People talk about Man Utd being inconsistent. But they are very consistent in leaving gaps and not controlling games at all.

  • @XboneMalone
    @XboneMalone 9 месяцев назад +11

Don't agree with you in full. The players at his disposal change from week to week (what was our back line at the weekend again?). How can anyone be expected to produce consistent results relying on the players left with some of those players clearly not upto it? Maguire won't defend a high line, he AWLAYS retreats (for example). Can't think how spaces open up when your senior defender (apparently a 1st choice for his national side) doesn't stick to the game plan.
Martinez out, Shaw missing for large chunks, Mount perma-crocked, Martial the same, Malacia unavailable, Varane susceptible, Sancho throws his toys out the pram, Antony not upto it but fit. McTominay offers little with (look up how many passes he makes per game from centre midfield) and without (see Coventry's 2nd) the ball except a late run when Hojlund's taken the defence the other direction. Then the injury carousel featuring the rest of the defence.
Did you miss him instructing Dalot to go forwards and provide an overlap in the first half, just before Dalot ran forwards and provided an overlap and a cross for our first? Dalot then pointed towards ten Hag during/post celebration?
The options out there aren't much better, the fact that another manager is experiencing difficulties 2 years on from joining for the 3rd time should tell us all something. But some think a manager controls the minds of the players on the pitch who shit the bed and disregard instructions. I'd rather we keep ten Hag over keeping a lot of the players. I like he's brought in Garnacho and Mainoo. I expect we'll see another one or maybe two next season come up and get chances.
I would like to see these players move on:
AWB (too prone to errors and not great on the ball)
Malacia (better using his spot for a young player earmarked to replace Shaw)
Maguire (too slow, not great on the ball, poor communication & awareness, high wages)
Varane (injury prone, as good as he is still, high wages, probably off on a free anyway)
Lindelof (not gonna be better than an option off the bench, prone to errors)
Casemiro (form has fallen from a cliff, still looks off the pace, high wages)
    McTominay (see 2nd paragraph)
Eriksen (offers so much on the ball, but little off, wants to play frequently and won't get that here)
Antony (high earner, mentality isn't right, ability for the prem/europe isn't there)
    Sancho (see Antony)
    Martial (already gone)
At this point we might as well do an Everton/Forest and sell them all on for whatever and spend big take the points deductions.

I think you’re very unfair to Casemiro and Eriksen at 11.07 in the video though. You say they’re not doing anything but they clearly are, esp. Eriksen. Eriksen has just won the header, goes to chase the ball, sees Dalot going to the ball ahead of him so starts to run to Dalot’s previous man and then when the Coventry player gets around Dalot, he stops where he is to be a block to the player who is now on the ball moving towards goal.
And if Casemiro wasn’t standing where he is, there would just be loads of open space in front of United’s goal.

I just found it odd that you went so hard in your criticism of those two players for that moment when (a) I think you’re wrong; (b) you’re clear elsewhere in the video that players not knowing where to be in this defensive set-up is the manager’s fault; and (c) these two players are already getting tons of over the top criticism after this match.

Ole Solskjaer took responsibility for his choices till the very end.
But now I have reached the second point, and I say this as a huge fan of Ten Hag's Ajax teams. That Real Madrid-Ajax 1-4 in 2019 is one of my favourite matches ever. But Erik has got to go, this is not the right fit, and he is losing his mind. He has lost all touch with reality with his excuses, most players are regressing under him, and this is the worst prepared Man Utd side I have seen since Moyes. I was rooting for Utd to lose, so we wouldn't have to be humiliated in the final by City, and Ten Hag thinks he can win. Good managers can get some basic instructions through in two weeks or less -- he can't get them to figure out who marks who after two years. I can’t see anyone doing better with these so called stars, and that to me should be the starting point. Guardiola kicked out Ronaldinho and Deco before he even stepped foot on the pitch. Fergie sold countless stars (at their peak) in order to maintain balance and humility among the team. If we can’t do something as basic as moving off the weak and support the manager, then how will we rebuild?
One last thought, don’t forget the good work Ten Hag did last year…

I dont think ETH wouldn't have been telling them to be more structured or compact... I just think there aren't any leaders on the field that call out instructions or manage the game. Like Telling Arron to get back etc. Players being in random position isn't something a coach would be telling them. Its things like McTominay don't doing his defensive work, AWB not being aware or calling for cover when he needs it from Rashy... And Rashy just doing what he wants and no defensive work.

This analysis is too basic. Sometimes tactics are not just about the game at hand.
There is a reason ETH is playing like this. Beginning of the season we were not scoring anything. ETH has resolved that by playing a pure numbers game and getting as many players into their half as possible. The result, we're scoring more goals.
Yes this means he has to rely on his defenders to play 1 on 1 more when we fuck up. But the alternative is us scoring zero goals but doing well defensively like we did at the beginning of the season.
If we don't have the injuries this is a non issue as we wouldn't lose the ball much in the first place and when do we'll have more than enough quality to defend it with AWB, Varane, Martinez and Shaw
He still won the game and had 3-0 up with his approach

Okay, let's list the games Ten Hagg's tactics have thrown away this season
    Arsenal: 1-0 to 3-1
    Tottenham: 1-0 and 2-1 to 2-2
    Nottingham 1-1 to 2-1
    Fulham: 1-1 to 2-1
    Liverpool: 2-1 to 2-2
Wolves 3-1 to 3-3 back to 3-4 because of Mainoo
    Galatasaray: 2-0 and 3-1 to 3-3 AND 2-1 to 2-3
    Copenhagen: 3-2 to 4-3
    Coventry: 3-0 to 3-3
    Brentford: 1-0 to 1-1
Every single game listed above had United leading/drawing in the 80+ minute before conceding
    City: 1-0 to 3-1
    Newport: 2-0 to 2-2 back to 4-2
    West Ham: 0-0 to 2-0
These games, we had the advantage at halftime before giving away the lead
The only games we've won late into the game due to these "tactics" are the following (no Wolves does not count):
Nottingham: 2-0 down after 4 minutes to win 3-2
Brentford: 2-1 in the 90+ minute
    Villa: 3-2
It doesn't work, and if Ten Hagg can't see that he should be sacked.

These analyses always revolve around 20-20 hindsight. The fact is players are not good enough, plays get injured / suspended, players tire, players are out of form, players make "mistakes" (I put it in inverted commas as mistakes come in all shapes and sizes with some being more worthy of the description than others). But you do have to also consider coaches over-complicate things and players fail to understand what the coach wants at times.
The biggest problem at united will always be that toxic dressing room where the wrong players are brought to the club and they end up having strops with the manager or go and post crap on social media. The club is rotten throughout. Ten Hag does deserve some blame but then who at the club doesn't?

The structure needs to be fixed first off all, then we can sort out the remaining problems 1 at a time. When fergie lost the league to city by goals, all he needed was a goal scorer and he won it back. The team has too many problems all over... from the beginning of the season I knew this season was going to be meh. Ten hag did very well last season but his decision to be a turn over team has really messed up this season, injuries to the defenders is also a big issue which most down play because its united and ten hag but the best defence in the league is Arsenal who have one of the most consistent back fours in the league, most especially centre backs... saliba and gabriel and finally add the toxic dressing room. If I'm ten hag I'd forget about the league and start planing for city because that's all that matters. I think the owners should sort out the structure of the club, the toxic dressing, the players and then come to the manager at the end of next season... by then we will be ready to go on all fronts.

I think we agree - mostly - they do need to start weeding out the overpaid problem players and might have to sell at considerable loss. You could of course also do to be rid of the Glazers but don't hold your breath there.
ETH, I repeat, shouldn't be immune to criticism all the same. He needs to pull his socks up but, as you seem to say, if he doesn't get at least another year, things won't be helped by the continued managerial merry-go-round.
I don't know what you mean by 'ready to go on all fronts', I must say, though. I think united are miles from having the consistency to be a real force, with it all coming down to the catalogue of problems we've agreed on.
They might take a cup or even 'flatter-to-deceive' again with an unexpected 2nd place in the title race but I'd say they need to keep things realistic for a decade and just work on getting better by degrees. Focus on quality kids on more modest wages at the outset (saves the club money and takes pressure off the player) and be honest with the fans: The rebuild could take a while.

@@NeilMalthus yeah that is what I mean by "ready to go on all fronts". Once the issues with the structure of the club in relation to football has been fixed, the players have been sorted then it would be easy to identify which coach would suite the football philosophy that united will take going forward. If done right it may not take so long in my opinion because as we've seen the quality is there but the proper infrastructure, discipline and tactics seem to be missing... but if things are not done well, it may take a long time. As united fan I'm not deceived by some second place or cup whatever... Glazers out is still top on the list but I am aware that ETH has several problems of his own and needs to be more honest in his interviews even though he is trying to save face, the english media is different from that of Holland and wonderfully bias against united because we are the news. I'm a lifelong United fan, and I don't think EtH is entirely the problem - though he's not faultless. I don't think sacking him will fix anything, it might prolong the pain in fact. No manager is going to come in an suddenly make these players do better, unless they're playing a low-block counter-attacking style which is the DNA of 80% of the players in this squad.
If United want to get better, they need to drop at least 15 players from this squad, and bring in 8. That will take 18mths at least, and next season will be more rebuilding. I'd rather keep EtH until we've made more changes and we're more setup for a different manager to come in, if that's even necessary at that time, as I think EtH is probably the right man for the job in the med-term.

I've been saying it for ages. None of Ten Hag's men really know what they should be doing in the 'system' they are playing. That's partially on the players, but mostly on the manager. It's his job to make sure they have a clear idea of their role and their responsibilities, and if that needs tweaking like stopping players from exploiting space, then the manager needs to effectively communicate that. He's just not a good manager.
