Loved Scotland. Never realized the amazing comedians that came from Scotland. (I loved English humor and have enjoyed the comedy) But then I discovered the rich comedic talents of UK as a whole. I know I’m late to the party. I discovered Fern Brady. She is brilliant. I can’t wait to see more.
Interesting what Fern was saying about how misinformed and ignorant doctors are about autism. She is totally right. I’m not sure about the diagnosis rules in the UK, but here in Australia you have to have two medical professionals to get a diagnosis - an OT/Speech Pathologist and a psychologist or psychiatrist. I like this because you’re going through medical professionals who tend to have more of a clue about autism than GP’s do. As a registered nurse, I can tell you I got no training on neurodivergence at all. I had a one week placement at an inpatient facility for people with severe needs, some of whom were neurodivergent - that was it. I’ve heard colleagues say horrifically ignorant and hateful comments about autistic people. I feel I can’t come out as autistic in this world as it is now because of the ignorance and hate that autistic people face. Masking my whole life is killing me too. It’s a frustrating situation and I am so thankful for people like Fern who are speaking out and helping bring the lived-in experience of autism in to the worlds sight line.
I wonder if the guys were sitting there the whole time secretly pinching themselves and asking themselves (in their minds), "How the f*ck did we ever get such a beautiful, bright sweetie pie on our show?".
Great episode, Fern is a gem. Absolutely loving the podcast so far. Really appreciate the conversation around class, accents and prejudice.

It’s like listening to the bloke yelling on the street corner in Mike Leigh’s film Naked.
