Just listening to him talk through the lyrics without even singing brought tears to my eyes, which demonstrates exactly why he's THE best Javert, period.
I had the pleasure of working and learning from Philip in 1992 in Les Miserables when I first started in theater. I was certainly raw, but help was there from old friends like Philip, Ken, and David. Philip is a wonderful guy, and gives so much sense to each word. Big hug my old friend Jeff Leyton.
Jeff Leyton How wonderful to see your comment. Every time I come to watch ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ sung by the 17 Valjeans from around the world, I skip back to replay your part. The power and conviction, and timbre, of your voice gets me every time. My favourite of them all. Your legacy in Les Mis surely stands alongside Philip’s.
Holy barricades, Batman… I literally wore down a CD and 2 VHS tapes going back and listening to your part in the International Valjean chorus. The key change is just exquisite. I also use the clip with my voice students as an example of… well, pretty much everything to do right. I’d have killed to be a fly on the wall in the Green Room during this performance- I’m sure the stories were incredible. It’s an honor to comment, sir! 😆😊
Chills honestly. My very favorite Javert. The 10th anniversary Les Miserables staged special is a classic. I hung on to every word of this interview. Thank you RUclips algorithm for queuing this video for me.
Hats off to the interviewer (and apologies if he's someone I should know, I'm just not familiar with him). He's an active listener, asks open ended questions and follows up when appropriate to let the subject _speak_ and share all of this gold. 29:00 is a great example, he caught that there was more to Mr. Quast's thought and just _asked the right question._ An oft neglected skill, unfortunately, for many interviewers.
This interview needs to be a standard viewing requirement for ALL ACTORS in this planet!!!! This is incredible mind blowing information and I've been in the business for over 20 years. Mr. Quast drives home the point that one never stops learning.
I was fortunate enough to participate in a six-week course with Philip in Sydney in late 2016. He was incredible!! I learned so much in such a short time and he was even kind enough to watch a rough cut of my first feature film and provide some great feedback. I never would have thought sitting in front of Play School and Les Mis as a 5-year-old that I would have such a tremendous opportunity twenty years later. He is a gem 👍👌😃
"What makes you sad?"" "Alas, politics. Narrow-mindedness, racism, sexism, misogyny. Violence." Just when you thought you couldn't possibly admire him more.
I came to this interview by a very roundabout route, starting with an item on a BBC radio arts program which announced that the BBC is going to broadcast a non-singing version of Les Mis this year. So I looked it up on Google and in that article I found a link to the 10th anniversary concert performance with Philip Quast (who I'd never heard of till tonight) and then discovered this interview with him. As a singer myself it's fascinating to see how he's thought out and developed the character of Javert and made him a complex man rather than just a vehicle for a voice. Thank you for posting this up.
just discovered this interview. LLLLLOOOOOOOVVVEEEDDDDD it!!! Yes, YOU are the real Javert! Yes, you are really amazing! Great teacher! Thank you for everything you shared. My best.
An hours worth of video to change the lives of singers everywhere. What incredible insight into how it should be done. I was only watching it because I love him as Javert. I wasn’t expecting life changing advice lol.
Have watched this numerous times and still marvel at it. Quast is A thinking man who understands the need to ask WHY things are how they are and applies it to understanding why he does everything he does. So analytical and insightful, yet so profoundly soulful. A good mind as well as excellence in expressive talents. He is very impressive and a great communicator. This is masterful and the interview is well conducted. Bravo!
Every time i hear Inspector Javert the only person comes to my mind is Philip Quast.. I want to see you sir in person and i want to learn something from you as an great theater actor...
Thanks for this wonderful interview. Philip is correct about vanity. It's what makes Hollywood actors look like cardboard cut-outs. Plastic surgery and fear of looking less than perfect makes them less than wonderful performers.
He is so much like me in terms of curiosity. I always want to learn new things and at age 76 I am still learning many new things. I do have 1 tiny advantage over him. I am naturally 45% right handed 45% left handed and 10% ambidextrous. One difference I see and work to see the future.
@@KathrynWebster-x8e at almost 70 I'm still excited by life and love to keep learning. The choice is ours as to whether we're open to our continued growth.
He is my favourite person best ever in the world that he is he made javert and the song stars my favourite song my bane is Craig king from south west wales 🏴 in Pembrokeshire
I'd much rather see people debate Philips contentions here because I don't think there's any right or wrong here. Ask him how he feels when he sees/hears renditions of Javert that are not like his.
I had listen recently "never enough" and i couldn't understand why that lady/man is so hard to pleased...untill i read the lyrics and i ve noticed the key words: " darling without you" ...( they are not very obvious when you hear it for the first time/times)...
These are two totally different types of singers......Quast is classically trained, Crowe has been singing for years in rock bands! Give Russell a break on this one, will ya?! He was not the worst part nor the best part of the movie. I thought Anne Hathaway's singing was worse (put tears in her eyes, cut her hair terribly, and tell her to try to sing). Crowe was hired for his acting ability, Quast for his singing. And Jackman can never come within an ocean of even slightly near Colm Wilkinson
Just listening to him talk through the lyrics without even singing brought tears to my eyes, which demonstrates exactly why he's THE best Javert, period.
Holy moly, his voice is intoxicating. I could listen to him read the White Pages.
By far the best Javert ever.
And it's a frenchman, fan of les misérables 1980's concept album who tells you that.
Don't forget the first french production in 1980 before the barbican: ruclips.net/video/H-7SeXDhacg/видео.html&start_radio=1

After watching this, I went back and watched him as Javert in Les Mis and it made his performance that much more incredible.
i would die for him without a second of hesitation
This is by far the most sensible and thoughtful celebrity interview I have watched.

Truly a Masterclass given by the best there is. Even if you don’t act or sing, there are a ton of takeaways that you can apply to life as a whole.
I WORSHIP PHILIP QUAST
His speaking voice is as amazing as his singing voice. Well, almost as amazing.
He is truly a fascinating guy. The guy was was great
"What makes you sad?""
"Alas, politics. Narrow-mindedness, racism, sexism, misogyny. Violence."
Just when you thought you couldn't possibly admire him more.
Then he brings out the most common, stock-standard opinion in the industry?
It must be hard for him to work in an industry that celebrates narrow mindedness and bigotry.

Other actors plays the role ofJavert but Philip Quast owns the character, much like Ruthie Henshall own Fantine.
After watching this, I just have to watch the 25th anniversary again and listen for how he sings. Great interview.
This is a master class. ❤️
That was amazing! What a wonderful man.
Phillip taught me how to do freestyle swimming - random but true
No way! He was your swimming instructor???? Christ, that’s awesome.

Amazing interview!!

I listened him,i think he would be great in les mis movie(2012) with singing live,he can show his talents

Philip Quast is so lucky he didn’t see the film. He might have jumped off that ledge fo’ real watching Russell Crowe..
I almost did, myself
Agreed. Russell Crowe slaughtered that role. So cringey.
I know I wanted to, between Russell Crowe's screeching and Hugh Jackman's totally off-key singing. That was a terrible movie!
These are two totally different types of singers......Quast is classically trained, Crowe has been singing for years in rock bands! Give Russell a break on this one, will ya?! He's a hunk.
He really looks like Russell Crowe !
Pure talent !
Nah he's better looking
With Philip outshining Crowe as far as Javert goes
Had no idea Peter Gabriel played Javert
Ya know, he kind of looks like Russel Crowe. Had he been cast in the movie, he would have made the weakest part the strongest.
He would have blown Jackman off the screen..
He says he hates sexism, and follows it up with "misogyny". He doesn't seem to mind misandy. He is what he hates.
I was actually halted by this comment😂😂😂😂 and then I heard him say he struggled with self-loathing.😢😢
