    Have watched this numerous times and still marvel at it. Quast is A thinking man who understands the need to ask WHY things are how they are and applies it to understanding why he does everything he does. So analytical and insightful, yet so profoundly soulful. A good mind as well as excellence in expressive talents. He is very impressive and a great communicator. This is masterful and the interview is well conducted. Bravo!

      He is so much like me in terms of curiosity. I always want to learn new things and at age 76 I am still learning many new things. I do have 1 tiny advantage over him. I am naturally 45% right handed 45% left handed and 10% ambidextrous. One difference I see and work to see the future.

    He is possibly my favorite actor of all time. I love his thoughts on the business of singing this song I know the director emphasizing in the extreme that they would act the songs more so than singing them,.... still Eponine did it. Russell does not have a big enough voice for Javerts featured songs. Not by a long shot. Listen to Bryn Terfle if you want to understand,... i Mean cast THATGUY sure he wont put butts in seats like Russell but LES MIS, less so than many other musicals, but even with its EPIC story, Les Mis is about the singing the music not acting the story.

    My ex husband is from Scotland a when he was little he actually saw PQ as Javert. I’m so jealous. I wish PQ would have played Javert in the movie version. I know they were just looking for a Hollywood star. I think Russel Crowe sucked. Javert is my fav character . I actually named one of my dogs Javert.

    • @eichelbergergary
      @eichelbergergary 2 месяца назад

      Russell is a terrific actor, and was an intriguing choice at one time, but clearly is not a singer in the vein of the stage performers we have enjoyed, especially Quast. Crowe was bound to suffer in comparison and is to be commended for not trying to perform in a mimicry of what theatre fans are accustomed - which would be out of his natural range it seems. It is a different take on the character that while suitably menacing in the acting department was never going to be comparable in the musical presentation aspect.

      he was in fact, smart to not try to be something he was not really a good fit for -- a musical powerhouse. Crowe was quite good in the acting portion of the role, but ill-suited toward the musical presentation many of us now expect from the role as a result of performances such as Quast's - which is just incomparable and elevating.

      I see your point and it is an important song, but the whole story is encapsulated by ‘Who am I?’ sung of course by Valjean

    • @m0o0oeh
      @m0o0oeh Год назад

      @@chrisp4170 it’s a great song, but for me nothing encapsulates both Valjean and Javert like that song. We learn throughout the whole musical of the journey these two have been on, and Valjean could have killed him, he could have done so many things after the endless running and hunting, but he chose not to, prompting Javerts last song. A moment that lives with me forever (despite my younger brother spoiling it for me for years by yelling “splash!” right as Quast utters the last syllables.) It’s an amazing show, and remains in my top 5 musicals of all time, but Phillip Quast will only ever be *my* Javert.
