I went to Les Mis six times when Philip Quast was in the show. I missed him every time. I got to see him in Evita in London, where he was (of course) excellent. I told him about my six failures and he immediately took my hand and busted this out at the stage door.

God, Philip Quast is a genius.
I think my all-time favorite moment from the 10th anniversary is during Javert’s suicide when he pulls down a lock of hair and in a blink goes from madness to destruction, really looking like a man whose cornerstones and fundamental principles have been shattered.

Frrrr the first time I listened all the way through les mis was with the 10th anniversary version and I instantly fell in love with this song as well as javert’s suicide. He does a brilliant job of it
The first time I ever heard this song was Russel Crowe in the movie, so you can imagine how surprised I was to discover that it sounds incredible usually.
What a shame that was. Neither the song nor Russell Crowe had to be wasted like that. He has musical experience and is not technically a bad singer, but the movie honchos insisted on wearing everyone out with 8-10 daily hours of full-out singing, and not all the actors got consistent vocal training. Crowe said he worked with like 4 different coaches depending on location, and never got a core technique down. It could've been so much better if they'd approached it with some sense.

Honestly acting wise this is where I think Norm Lewis has a leg up, during that musical break he crossed himself, bows his head and closes his eyes and says the next “Lord let me find him...” lines as a prayer with his eyes closed. It gave me chills and was just so in character and perfect.
yeah i think that would fit with the symmetry of les mis since "Bring Him Home" is also a prayer.
Philip Quast as Javert is like Leonard Nimoy as Spock- so iconic and _perfectly_ cast that it's hard to separate the actor from the role! Sidenote: Look up Philip Quast singing "Soft Kitty, Warm Kitty". He did it for some children's programming thing and uh. The mental image of Javert singing that is as valuable as prime seating tickets for Hamilton. More valuable, even. It's so silly and good.

The best part is the smug look he gives the audience after the song. He's still in character and doesnt allow himself even the smallest teaction to their applause.
Doing us Australians proud - I saw Philip play the role when Les Mis originally toured Australia. It was a show that changed my life.
I saw that too, magnificent. There was a young chap called Anthony Warlow as Enjolras too. Wonder what happened to him?
Where as my first memories of him is Play school - Imagine my surprise and delight years later finding that one of my favourite Play School Presenter became one of my Favourite Musical Theatre Performers!
I grew up watching him on playschool too, and my mum played the Les Mis cast album all the time. When this concert aired in Australia I finally got to see him in this role the way my parents did in the 80s. He blew me away.

@7:27 Philip Quast actually sings different lyrics than the original "And so it has been..." but rather, "And so it must be..." and it appears that everyone else who has sung this song after him has followed his lead!
Yeah, I love this change! I think it was a real spark of genius to take a fairly passive phrase and turn it into an opportunity to instead make a powerfully emphatic statement that perfectly encapsulates Javert's character.
Can you ONLY imagine how well he would have been in the filmed adaptation? Opportunity lost.

My heart literally leapt for joy seeing this title, as I LOVE Philip Quast's way of singing Stars (I used to sing along to it at home I was so envious of his breath control)
It's my favorite male performance of any musical theater. If you've never heard Quast talk about this one, look it up! It's awesome.
(Though I have to say, the 'shall his crimes be reprieved' from the reprise of this melody is hands down the best.)

No one will ever sing this number like Quast. I cry every time.
I just watched the hour long episode of BEHIND THE RED CURTAIN with Philip Quast on RUclips and it was so good. What an intelligent and fascinating man! On this show, which is the Australian version on In the Actor's Studio, Philip talks extensively about his approach to acting and musical theater performances. A must watch for fans of both Philip Quast and musical theatre.
Excellent video.
Three comments:
1. When Javert starts the last verse, "Lord let me find him, that I may see him...", note how his tone changes from certainty and authoritative becoming more courteous, gentle and one of supplication to absolute authority - justifying why God should allow/help him to find Valjean.
2. Javert did not care _why_ Valjean was arrested or the injustice of his sentence, only that fact that he broke the law, thereby becoming a criminal and, subsequently, breaking his parole and becoming a fugitive to be pursued and brought to "justice" and punished.
3. Javert represents The Law (Old Testament/Covenant), while Valjean represents forgiveness, redemption, and mercy (New Testament/Covenant). Though, with Javert, there is no forgiveness, grace or mercy unless delivered by a direct human authority with no concept of love, forgiveness, grace or redemption by Divine means in the heart/soul, only by works and punishment in and of the flesh.
Though Quast is a superb performer and makes us love Javert, Javert, is in fact, a very sad, lost man that could neither accept or understand forgiveness, grace, mercy or be indebted to someone he considered beneath him. His pride and misplaced faith was his undoing and a very sad ending for he never knew, or could accept, mercy, forgiveness or love.
It was a sad ending to Javert's life but it doesn't mean that his life was sad. I agree that his inability to understand and accept forgiveness/mercy was his undoing but it just means he was human and, just like everyone of us, he had his own blind spots and imperfections.
I was very interested to hear you talk about his careful emphasis on certain words. There is a fantastic video (something like "Philip Quast Masterclass") where he breaks down Javerts Suicide and talks about the importance of certain words and how to bring them out.
A lot played Javert, but no one could equal Philip Quast's delivery of the song...

I was lucky enough to see Philip Quast live twice in London at the Palace Theatre. The first time I was sat in the front row stalls and when he stood at the edge of the stage belting out his lines, it changed my love of the character . For me there is no one else who portrays Javert with such passion and believability and I have seen Les Mis over ten times. Let’s not mention Russell Crowe or the film in general.

My favorite song in the musical. So emotional, so heartbreaking for how passionate yet mistaken Javert is.
"One day more" from that same concert is one of my all-time favourite musical theatre performances. I watch it at least once a week.
Search for the One Day More in the Hey Mr Producer concert. Almost the same cast as the 10th Anniversary - Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Michael Ball, Lea Salonga - but with much better acoustics. Unlike the 10th Anniversary where Javert is a good 2ft away from the microphone in Hey Mr Producer they have the forehead microphones so yo can hear all of Javert’s lines - in full Quast glory.

I am so surprised for the 2 meanings of “face to face” I never thought about it in that way! I love the way he describes and interacts with us telling not only vocal lessons and tips, but the story and what’s behind (his opinion). I love this kind of reactions.

My favourite Javert ever, probably because I saw Philip play this role here in Sydney. For me the really evil character is Thenardier, totally amoral.
I have always been impressed with Mr Quast.
One thing I have noticed - by its absence - When Mr Quast inhales, there is no loud hiss, slush or other noise which I have been seeing far more often with many Broadway performers - most especially since the cultic fans of Imelda Mendez and her turn as Elphaba in "Wicked" .
My mother was an opera singer (coloratura - and yes, when she rehearsed or practiced at home it hurt) and she always taught that inhale was to be as silent as possible.

I've always had vibrato envy with Philip Quast. He makes it seem so easy and free!
I remember seeing this when it premiered on PBS my senior year in 1995, and was so impressed with it. 25 years later it’s still my favorite recording of this show.
This just made me appreciate Quast's performance even more than I already had. Such good points about the intensity of certain words. I just caught how much he looked up at the "stars" and as a singer, that is really tough to sing with your head up like that! Great video reaction!
It's frequently discussed how important it is to not just sing but act the role of a song, and Quast does such a tremendous job here in my mind. He doesn't skimp on any of the physical mannerisms -- as you said, "intensity." Totally non sequitur, but I feel I have to confess ... I don't much care for Rent. I'm so sorry Marc, and I'll understand if you want me banished from the channel!
Just the best performance. I am a huge Michael Ball fan and saw him last year in London as Javert and he was fabulous. But Philip is to Javert as Michael is to Marius - just the best! No one can compare.
I would love for you to talk about Ramin singing “Til I Hear You Sing”. His Olivier performance....phenomenal!!
Love Never Dies gets a lot of hate, and I can largely see why, but the fact that ALW loved Ramin and Sierra as the Phantom and Christine so much that he wrote a fanfic for them says it all, and their stunning voices fully deserve it!

I think it was Jeremy Secomb who did Stars at some concert setting, where he kneeled, crossed himself, and leaned on the police baton like Christian crusades used to lean on their cross shaped swords. Such a powerful image, emphasizing how much he believes he's really an emissary of god. Was one stellar performance as well.
I got to see Jeremy Secomb live in the West End. He was phenomenal! All his acting choices were on point! I feel like a lot of actors don't understand the complexity of Javert's character but Secomb was magnificent! He's my 2nd favorite Javert after Quast.
Best song, best performance in the entire play. I've watched that video about ten times in the past two days.
The “small” songs from musicals tend to be the ones I love the most. This is number 1 on that list and this anniversary edition is my favorite performance of the song full stop.
YAAASSS!!! I was waiting for this one! Best song by the best male villain in a musical, performed by the best actor in the role. Javert fascinates me- so convicted, so sincere, yet so misguided. How is it possible? Could it ever be true of me? So much to ponder.
For the most terrifying Javert, watch the most recent version of Les Miserables produced by PBS for their Masterpiece series. David Oyelowo had me hyperventilating.
Quast’s demeanor and delivery is very much in the style of a fire and brimstone preacher, right down to his sermon’s thundering crescendo.
I honestly don't know how it's humanly possible for a person to get certain notes to sound like a bell pealing in a cathedral but somehow he does. You can hear it in the last "Stars" and in "Reprieve" in Javert's Suicide in the same recording.

For a fun change of pace, I'd love to see a reaction to Topol singing "If I Were a Rich Man." I know it's a movie and it's pre-recorded, but it's still such a great piece of humor and acting. Plus who doesn't love "Fiddler."

I know that you tend to focus on performances with only one singer as the focus of the song, but The Confrontation (10th anniversary concert) to me is such a phenomenal demonstration of inserting character within performance and would love a reaction to it
Philip gives me goosebumps every time, love his voice
I love the way he stares intently around the audience during their applause, never breaking character. It would be hard not to break character just a bit and respond to such adulation, but instead he continues as Javert scanning the audience for anyone about to fall from grace. It's almost as outstanding as the song itself!
This is such an amazing play. I enjoy your reviews. It's not just about singing. So much about backstory and context and meaning. You really understand the story and importance of each moment. You have good perspective on the story. Such a powerful production. Good stuff.

I absolutely love your take on this and I totally agree with you, especially about the contrasts. That is such an important aspect of the character that ultimately leads to his suicide. I love this song, this moment in the show, and that performance. Wow.
As a dude who started playing guitar 17 years ago (now 29), grew up on classic rock and that style, most of my singing has been pop/indie…
Philip is an icon to me. Good fucking lord. He IS JAVERT. I came to Les Mis longer than I should have, and that 10th anniversary cast is insane. Perfect.

I love that you mentioned the way he subtly pauses in places as though Javert is thinking of what to sing next. The whole stars metaphor as his stellar equivalents, in fact, seems to come to him just as he finishes the first verse and happens to look upward. It's one of the things I love about his performance.
Something else I love about this performance is the way he maintains character after the very end. The audience couldn't be any more enthusiastic short of rushing the stage to embrace him, but he stands there glaring at them, as though they might be hiding Jean Valjean, or perhaps about to fall from grace themselves. It must be hard not to break character and at least take a bow while receiving so much adulation.

It’s funny because I always used to feel like my fascination with the 10th anniversary version of this song (I’d say it’s among my favourites in the show) was kinda weird because of what he’s singing about. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in enjoying it so much lmao. The conviction, and reverence at times, and the way you can feel how his strong belief and the moral framework he has holds his world together perfectly and rigidly (and subsequently collapses it in it’s absence) really captivated me from the first listen. It’s almost comforting to hear his point of view because of how almost comforted by his religious worldview he seems to be. That as well as how uncomplicated it is- the simplicity is also comforting in a way because of how to him there’s always a right and wrong, always a light or a dark, and the world is set in stone without any grey areas or unsurety.
Also you should totally do a reaction to Philip Quast’s Javert’s suicide if you haven’t already :)

Philip Quest. Ahh.. One of the few actors who added soul to Javert. Very interesting character played by an excellent actor. ❤️ I'm in the PH and I managed to watch the Les Mis Tour last 2015. I also studied this song quite a bit, I agree with what you say about not judging the character. I mean, he's not a typical "villain", since all throughout the story (except his last moments) he believed that he was the one on the right.
Lets not forget, even in his suicide he believes hes right. Thats why he in fact kills himself.

Really interesting analysis-thanks so much. Quast has said that he is an actor who can carry a tune, and you bring out how he uses his acting skills, as well as how he does a bit more than carry a tune.

His performance in this show borders on perfect.
Also his hat could fall off when he looks up at the stars. But that this man is able to channel prop handling and costume business so beautifully into adding meaning to the song is impressive. Best Javert ever.

After the last video I watched where you less than glowing about Andrew Rannell's performance of "I Believe", I was interested but reluctant to watch this video. I won't tolerate anyone putting any shit on Philip Quast's magnificent performance in this show. This particular song from this performance is the GOAT.
On a side note: Did you know that Philip was a long-term (15 years) cast member of Playschool, an iconic Australian children's TV show that has been on air for over 50 years?

Wonderful breakdown of the song, insightful, informative and intelligent advice for anyone wanting to perform this song. A watershed performance by our Aussie leading musical theatre legend, the great Philip Quast. Well done Marc!
Philip is the best for this song and the character. I like how you said that Philip thinks through the song. All through his performance at that concert you can see his mind is involved. That is a good observation. The phrase "the flame, the sword" and the character himself makes me feel that they are instruments of justice and punishment and even death. Just as God uses fire to convey complete destruction as an everlasting punishment, Javert wields the sword of justice as divine punishment or even death. As if he were saying that God's flames of justice and his wielding of the sword are equal in terms of divine punishment and execution. It reminds me of what is written in the Bible which is the characters inspiration, Romans 13:1 says, "Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities, for there is no authority except by God; the existing authorities stand placed in their relative position by God." So Javert feels ordained by God to stand as God's law enforcer, punisher and executioner. Verse 3 we see into Javert's mind on how he sees himself in God's divine purpose, "For those ruling are an object of fear, not to the good deed. but to the bad." Finally in the last part of verse 4, "For it is not without purpose that it bears the sword; for it is God's minister, an avenger to express wrath upon the one who is practicing what is bad." This is Javert's sole purpose in life and the whole reason to his existence.

I am so glad you reviewed the performance. I had seen 2 live performances of Les Misérables, the film version which I did not care for and I have both the 10th and 25th DVD anniversaries. For me Philip Quast is the best Javer; powerful, determined, commanding and yes, every time I hear Philip I get chills.
The other voice coach who reviewed this performance had the same problem with the old expression "safe behind bars." It's not a reference to the criminal being safe, but rather to society being safe from the criminal. I think partly it's fallen out of use over the past half century, and partly it's a Briticism rather than an Americanism. So many good expressions have fallen out of use just in my lifetime. I have to direct my students, for instance, to Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" for the last use I can recall of "someday when my ship comes in." Of course in my youth in the 60s that was mostly used by con artists trying to marry the daughters of respectable families, but it's a great metaphor that comes from the merchants of the Italian city-states of the Renaissance. The expression lasted 500 years only to die out in the last 50. I wish I had a similar place to go to see an example of "behind bars" in context. It sounds like something that Bogart might have said circa 1940! :-)
When he is holding out that last word, you can see him briefly glanced down for a quick second. Do you think he was looking at the conductor?

One of the best commentaries on the role of Javert I have heard. So much truth, so much value in relating how the performance is done to why it needs to be done that way.
Maybe the next one should be "Confrontation" by Anthony Warlow or David Hasselhoff (they both are so great)
in the musical "Jekyll & Hyde")
I was tremendously blessed to see J&H 3 times in NYC. Each J&H was in Les Miserables. Robert Cucciloli(sp) , a Javert, brought out Hyde really well. Robert Evan, a ValJean, was a stronger Jeckyll. Joseph Mahwold (sp), an Enjolrah, was even keel. I just find this amusing. I love both shows so much!

I absolutely love his rendition of this song. It will stick with me forever, whenever the world seems unjust, whenever I encounter someone believing in a power beyond us, it’s just… so powerful. If there is one song that can make you understand a person’s devotion to a religion, it’s this. Not saying that I do personally, but there is something beautiful in faith.

I saw him in Les Mis in Sydney in 1988. He was incredible. Amazing stage presence. I met him a few years later and I asked for a photo. He thought it was weird but he did it anyway.
I love Quast as Javert for 2 reasons.
1. It is powerful
2. He was on Play School when I was a 5 year old so I remember him also singing nursery rhymes.
Stars is my favourite from Les mis it always. No one can compare with this guy. For his voice and is looks I'm still watching this on the 29th of January 2023 ⭐
