I have this damn problem ☹️ i need a mini computer as a server and im on a really tight budget so some old phone or tablet will probably be my solution
I also did this except for a few minor differences: 1. It was an Android phone with USB-C that supported video out 2. It was connected to a USB-C dock that provided HDMI, USB, and audio output 3. I built it for extremely cheap by reusing salvaged parts (like the case being an old 3COM modem) 4. My phone, busted screen and all, were left in-tact inside the new shell. No sense taking it apart and doing something silly with it, I thought. xD clearly I was not incorrect.
the dissipation tubes have liquid inside, the heat causes the pressure to increase and it changes the shape of the tubes, so they become round. Great project!
Do the same thing but with an old Samsung device that supports DEX; you could easily repurpose an old dock for the ports, overclocking the SOC for maximum performance and no throttling with the cooling solution would be a BEAST. With a Galaxy S9 this would be a great setup.
Actually if u do this using an Android based phone (be better if it support to run ubuntu touch and use it) u can actually have the external desktop mode. Like samsung dex or just regular plain old android desktop mode that google never actually make it usefull enough.
You put soo much effort & engineering in this. That's why I don't wanna say something negative. But you didn’t add any additional features or I/O for connecting Mouse / Keyboard. You just created a problem for a solution. This would look great if you added some RGB & Plexiglass or glass. Exposed motherboard will be covered in dust in a few days.
Looking cool, but some RGB and a coat of paint would have made it perfect. Add some filter matte to the rear fan, so it does look more deliberate and use heat shrink to mark off the power poles. The front screen isn't centered, that could have been cooler. Over all, amazing project. very fun
I love your idea of repurposing old parts. Perhaps you could make a series with this idea. Where you take old tech that people throw out and then see if it can be converted in to a desktop Linux computer. Android phones would be a rather easy one to try. I imagine modern calculators are doable. Hope that gives you some ideas. Good luck man.
Great way to recycle different materials in Malaysia, I like how different and an oddity it is. Id like one for just that reason. The messy back, i would have added the clear plexi, it would have tied all of it together, a lil cable managment. Well done. Fun
how is this big he just spread the parts apart. im a regular guy and have a soldering iron i can make the same useless boxy iphone too and better but why. the size of the screen isnt any bigger no exterior monitor no external controls he just made a less useful iphone such a low tier project
Do with the high end broken android phone like Samsung so you can use android, Linux, or windows 11 arms on it. using an iPhone wasn’t worth it because it can’t be updated iOS later on and might stuck on old iOS and is hard to use Linux, android on it because apple is very greedy these days. This is basically a iPhone mini MacinPhone
I liked the idea, with certain Android phones, you can have HDMI out, and installing Termux or Userland, you can run a desktop OS, such as Ubuntu or Fedora
You shouud have done with a phone which has desktop mode, like Huawei/Honor or Samsung. With a Keyboard, mouse and a little postable screen that would be great
Love this! The final result looks just like a miniaturized mid tower! One suggestion I have is that it might be possible to wire a 3.5mm audio input via the connection to the speakers. This way you could plug in external speakers or headphones without having to use a lightning adapter. I'd love to see how this works with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse and speakers/headphones!
So to people in the comments a year ago or whatever crying about this being pointless, this actually could be a great emulation machine. An iphone 7 has the power to emulate a lot of stuff, but is held back by the aforementioned overheating issue which is fixed here. Add a display output maybe, grab a bluetooth controller, this could be good for gaming simply because of the lack of overheating.
if this was an samsung you could've made it useful due to dex mode. just a usb c to hdmi adapter with a couple usb ports and you'd be able to use it like a pc.

If you used a dongle for hdmi and put the iphone screen flat, you could have used the display as a mini keyboard to operate it and the external screen as the monitor.

Would've been much better if he uses one of those samsung phones with dex. I'm currently commenting on a galaxy note 8 with a black dot and I'll fully convert it into a pc if the display broke
Can you create it with connecting an external monitor and keyboard? That way we can sue a small PC with basic accessories work work like windows and such?

Just use a samsung board with the same efforts you can use it as actual pc with hdmi and usb ports and display will no longer be needed. S8 would be fine
Dont listen to the ney sayers. They just morons. You just marketed this wrong. Its not a mini PC. Its a thinkering project and if you enjoyed it bulding it its worth it. Now to also give some tips. Or if conect a good Bluetooth speaker to it it could be a Radio or Spotify device. I also got inspired by this but beleive it or not my inspiration is the pipe for the case. I searched for solutions that are not requiring a 3D printer but this solution is so elegant and obvious now. Cut a pipe and heat it flat and cut it which form you want it. Anyways! Of course, you need a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and for an external monitor, you need an adapter from the Lightning port to HDMI.

You can only do that with Jailbreaks on iOS (iOS Jailbreaks are basically Android Rooting but so much more annoying to do)
