    The most important thing is how Penn was mesmerised that he just wanted to see the cards and fan them out for himself instead of the crowd. He really enjoyed the trick and wanted to just see for him, then the joke of "Someone who is a professional in show business would do that automatically". That there is the moment you know, Penn was really enjoying the trick and was a true spectator.

    My absolute favorite part of this trick isn't the trick itself. It's the look that Penn has when he takes his hand away and see the wrapped deck of playing cards. One of the greatest magicians in the world and he had a look of pure amazement and joy like a little kid has. For a magician, that must be an amazing feeling.

    • @shawnr771

      That look from Penn is priceless. The only one I know of in the Fool Us videos.
      In later stuff I started watching Teller.
      Teller's reaction especially when he is sitting up close.
      When someone is really good his face tells all.
      When Teller is amazed everybody else in the room should be in awe because whoever is performing is that dang good.

    • @mikemx55
      @mikemx55 2 года назад +5

      Well... that look was faked. Because at the end, he claims he saw the deck switch, when the performer reaches for the pen. He must have felt the plastic wrap in his hands, which also has a different feel than the paper card deck. He's a true performer and did the surprise effect for the audience. In the end, he knew what was going on.

    I keep coming back to this performance and each time I'm equally amazed.
    Years ago I happened to be the close up camera tech when Shawn performed his "shape of my heart" routine at a magic convention on a Norwegian cruise ship and even though I was only a few metres away with a high resolution camera I could understand how he could manipulate those cards so buttery smooth.
    When he pointed to his mouth at the end of the trick, I raised the camera for the final shot and I almost dropped a very expensive broadcast Sony cam because I couldn't believe what I was looking at.
    During the trick in this perormance above, you can see Penn is watching every move like a hawk and as he said at the end, he saw the deck switch but getting the signed card in the new deck was insane.
    There are only two possible scenarios - either Shawn has sold his soul in exchange for superhuman skills or, well actually that's all I have . . . .

      The deck switch is actually him switching from a deck of cards to the brand new sealed deck with 1 joker card on top to make it look like a full deck or cards. The deck has a slit in the bottom for him to slide in the card, which he then covers back up somehow. Then it's placed into penns hand and he removes the top card.

      This is a complete guess, but I think there are three swaps, pushing it off into read more:
      1
      2
      3
      4
      5
      One swap before Penn inserts the card. This can be done so the card can be inserted "face-up" into the proper place.
      Probably a swap in-between everything, so he can have time to wrap the deck. If he swapped while in someone's hands, that's obvious, and if he DIDN'T swap, he'd have to insert the card "through the seal" (the other end is usually a fold, which wouldn't let him insert in the middle.
      Third: Swap before inserting the deck into hands. The deck looks normal (you can see a double-backed logo in the video), but pretending to pull out the joker is a necessary step. It hides at least the top from sight.
      I think they knew part of it, as they they mention "we saw A move". They didn't see any more. Maybe it could be done with two swaps (I'm trying to think of how you'd get it unshuffled while hidden, swapping once after they insert, so you have time to wrap it for the second). That's part of why the guy goes through the conversation: 'if I did it how you think I would've, I could show you *a* sorted deck, but how about...'. That's why Penn was agreeing, right up until he was like "oh no, he got me"

    Shawn, I had the wonderful opportunity years ago to be on a cruise where you were performing - your last tour with that ship if I recall correctly, and was absolutely MESMERIZED by your performances. You're a master of the art, sir. Fool Us is easily my favorite show on TV because it both celebrates the craft of illusion, as well as gives amateur analysts like me at opportunity to try to break down a performance - then be filled with wonder at a display that we can't figure even the beginnings of how something could be done. Thank you for doing what you do, and I'll always treasure that dumb little signed DVD of yours that I so happily paid for all those years ago.

    👏 Shawn! You tricky son of s gun you!
    Here's my guess on how you did it: 1. The original 'sealed' deck he takes out to start the trick has already been opened. He does something to the 7 of diamonds (maybe shortens it? OR crimp it) so that he could force it on Penn to sign. 2. He does a deck switch to take out the gimmicked deck that has been carefully cut open at the bottom which has 2 flaps in 2 positions. One under the 6 of diamonds and one above the 8 of diamonds, leaving a gap for him to place the signed 7 of diamonds into so it would be in the correct position. He uses a joker or other card I don't remember to hide the gimmicked deck under Penns hands. After inserting the 7 he pressed the gimmicked (probably glued) box shut including the cellophane. 3. Now here's the best part and how he fooled Penn. Shawn does a SECOND deck switch or rather 'BOX SWITCH' when he reaches into his right pocket to take out the extra cards. He leaves the gimmicked box in his pocket, and takes out a normal box to hand to PENN to examine. THAT'S what fooled Penn. He never was able to examine the gimmicked box.
    So that's it. What do you think? Am I close?.

    • @gauephat7760
      @gauephat7760 7 месяцев назад +1

      I think you're right it is a force, and I think you are correct there are shenanigans happening very late in this act, but I think the exact order of it you have mixed up. I don't know what the etiquette is around here about actually guessing close to the mark so I'll stay vague. I think the very obvious deck switch at 2:34 was meant to be seen by Penn, so that a much later and much more outrageously bold deck switch would go unnoticed. There's a sort of standard way to do this trick and the early deck switch is meant for Penn to think that is how it is going to be done. But it isn't done that way: the actual method is much more simple and devious.
