    Rupert - I joined youtube just to say how much I’ve enjoyed playing your arrangements - they’re accessible, really well written and sound fantastic. I’m not a jazz pianist - I’m terrible at improvisation - but having these classics properly scored has been a wonderful find for me and a great gateway into jazz, so Thank you. I’ve recorded a fair few of yours for my soundcloud so if you fancy hearing a fairly average classical Piano teacher butchering your material, do hit me up. Do More please. And why can I find nothing about you online other than on RUclips?! Sort that out!

      Hi Will, great to hear you have been enjoying playing some of my arrangements. I have looked you up on SoundCloud, and apart from hearing your lovely playing of some of my arrangements, I discovered that we have very similar taste in the classical repertoire. Lots of Debussy, Chopin, Scarlatti and Poulenc, and a conspicuous absence of Beethoven. If you added in more of Grieg's Lyric Pieces our tastes would be nearly identical. And great to hear three of my absolute favourites in there: Rachmaninoff's G# minor prelude and Novelettes 1 and 3 by Poulenc. I have previously considered posting the 3rd Novelette on my channel as I think it should be more widely known, and it has harmonic touches (e.g. altered dominant chords) similar to many jazz standards. Finally I thank you for introducing me to that super piece by Poulenc called Melancolie. It is gorgeous and I shall learn it when I have time.

    • @willwest4736
      @willwest4736 3 года назад +3

      Thanks for listening and replying, Rupert - it sounds like we do have similar tastes - it’s anything French for me really - Faure, Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc etc! I’m glad you singled out Melancolie - if I were only allowed to play one score for the rest of my days it would be that one.
      Really touched that you liked My recordings of your arrangements. I finished this very Gershwin one today too and uploaded it - so it’s there if you fancy.
      (And no - I’ve never gone big on Beethoven either!)
      Keep doing what you do - and thanks again.

      @@willwest4736 I listened to your Summertime at SoundCloud. Good job - the highly syncopated upbeat section is tricky indeed. I uploaded a new arrangement yesterday: Pure Imagination. Look that one up and see if it is to your taste.

    • @willwest4736
      @willwest4736 3 года назад

      Thanks for listening - it’s the toughest one I’ve tried of yours by a fair way I think, and a mile away from my comfort zone of classical! Your pure imagination arrangement is an absolute stunner, and my other half has already printed off and presented me with the score - demanding that I do it immediately! I’ll let you know when I’ve got my fingers round that bonkers middle section (the Dreamy rising octave movements in that bit - with the switch/replace thing from finger 5 to 1 as you climb the keyboard - reminds me a lot of the technique required for a Gottschalk one I totally butchered recently - also similar to some of the techniques required for Liszt - I think it’ll take me a fair while to nail - especially attempting to make the melodic line sing in the left and not sound stilted whilst flying around all over the shop in the right - monstrous stuff!)

    I have now downloaded about a half-dozen of your arrangements (you're amazing). I took classical and jazz piano decades ago...but never became so nimble with the chord progressions that I could do what you are doing. And so well paid too. THANK you for the FREE downloads! You made my Easter....and made me miss my parents less. THANK you so much. Just stunningly gorgeous arrangements--especially this one. Also, love your arrngmt of "Somewhere over the Rainbow"--my Kansas Mom's fave... Pamela (NYC and Seattle).

    I feel a lot of warmth & lightness to the piece, & warmth is not usually an adjective I put first in a jazzy version of this type of work. I’ve heard this piece done simplistically (nothing wrong with that) as well as on the opposing side, played w/great ability including probably a great deal of improv (done very well given his young age). You seem to fit in that nice pocket of ability and feeling. Not everyone can combine the two. Played quite nicely🎹👏🏼!

      @bill Bloggs Not sure where I am on the scale. (As a teenager--decades ago--I was playing Chopin's most difficult etudes...and some jazz.) Now, as a tax attorney, I rarely have time to practice. I do think music helped me be a better tax attorney. Question: I would like to get a good weighted 88 keyboard to put on top of a radiator in my NY area pre-war apartment. Do not want to spend more than about $1600. Want the most realistic feel. Suggestions? I hate shopping. Wish I could get really good acoustic grand, but I live on the 5th floor...and there's not adequate room. Roland, Yamaha, Casio. Looking for most realistic FEEL...and decent sound. Do not need all the bells & whistles--just earphones (and bluetooth would be nice...) Pam
