  • This week we are renovating the root cellar in the basement of our 100-year-old farm house! We're going to rip out the old crumbling shelves, clean it thoroughly, and give it a good coat of paint just to polish it off. Then we'll set to work building sturdy shelves that can withstand the hundreds of pounds of stockpiled, canned goods we want to store down here! Come along and see how we renovate our large family, prepping pantry!

Oh thats great! You could even chalkboard paint the front boards so you could write on them what goes where. Great job! Wish I had a root cellar.

What a blessing to have great neighbors! Josh, you and the kids did a phenomenal job. The house i grew up in had that concrete shelf around a couple of sides and that is where all our canning jars went too. 1 little light bulb, damp corners, and spiders galore. So I know where you are coming from, except yours looked so much better than ours. I would be itching to get stuff on those shelves! Congrats!

I think I am the only person in my family that is not afraid of spider. If at all possible I try to move them outside. There have been a few casualties unfortunately. I have a spider to the left of my door when coming out. The webs are amazing and he/she takes care of other bugs for me. Everyone knows not to touch that web when it is up. lol

Oops in the basement was the summer kitchen and it was connected to a small house they attached to the bigger house out back . There's a well and shelves for canned goods but the really neat thing is there are about six foot shelves notched out of the foundation on all 4 sides of the basement and they are made of fieldstone slabs , They are about 2-3 feet deep into the walls .We were told by the later owner that that is where they would put jars of cream or jars of fruit that they wanted cool. Like if you were having peaches for dessert the stone would be ground temp and chill your jars just to be pleasant for eating -no refrigerator needed 🙂. Your poured concrete shelves may have been the same idea? Science experiment- check the temp of jars on the cement as opposed to the open shelves. There's alot of wisdom in the past. Thanks for inspiring me to clean up our cellar too.!

Great video. I don't watch all your videos as I am plant based, but I love to watch those that are relevant to me. Watching your hard working family is really motivating I find, and I'm about to reorganise my bulk food storage area so your two root cellar videos were just what I needed right now to give me some encouragement to get going. I know I need to do better with stock rotation as I've had a few missed items that end up wasted and I hate that. I have kept a well stocked supply throughout the pandemic and now I am in the habit I continue to buy extra for storage with each grocery order which has worked well with current supply and cost issues. Thanks for sharing with us 😊

If you guys can jelly and jam you could consider making shelves in the far end wall for pint size jars just so you have the space in case you add something else. For instance we're a family of six and I can my ketchup and BBQ sauces in pint size jars

    Great job guys!
If I may just a suggestion: use glasses when cutting wood because some knots could go flying and could hurt people.
One of the places I get some wood from, they do have all the safety equipment but sometimes the workers do not use it and recently one of them was cutting a piece of wood which had knots and a piece of a knot hit one of his eyes, he lost that eye because retina detachment. He has only social health plan so they said nothing could have done to place the retina back. Maybe, in the private health care(expensive), they could have done something, still most probably not.

Way past time to help you but cleaning up the existing walls pointing up all the cracks with the good mortar mix and then using old-fashioned whitewash to cover the walls it lets moisture in and out but also makes it more sanitary and livable.

It’s amazing the transformation of the space with just the paint and added light. The shelves look so sturdy and it was a great call to add the lip to the front of the shelves! We don’t have a root cellar or basement even so storage is a problem when you preserve your food and need long term storage solutions. What an added blessing to get the wood from the neighbor. Thank you for sharing, I’m looking forward to the final tour!

Thats fantastic. Definitely an improvement and looks great too. I have 1 really good, sturdy shelf that we found on clearance because the box was crushed on one corner. Hubby easily straightened that and its fantastic but everything else is on two old, seen much better days cupboards and a cheaper set of shelves spread through our small house. It works for now, one day we'll have to replace the old bits though. Well done family 😍
