Hey, I just wanted to say thank you so much for using my song in this video. One of your subscribers just came by my page and told me that they looked me up after watching this video. Truly beautiful shots by the way!
The atmosphere in the beginning of the video, while driving through the snow covered landscape, with that relaxed song playing, immediately caught me. Awesome video!
I love my 200-800 so far -- had it for 2 months now. I enjoyed seeing your photos. I've never been to Alaska, so makes your video even more interesting to me. The owl photos were truly special -- an honest moment in its life -- all wild and free... Congrats. Kind regards
Beautiful images and videos, man! Really impressive. I got my 200-800 after waiting what felt like years, and my R5 Mk II should be arriving this Tuesday. I'm counting the hours like a little kid waiting for Christmas. Really looking forward to pairing it with the 200-800!
However early you got out of bed to find that beautiful light and perfect location it was certainly worth it. Great use of the lens through your skill and local knowledge - many congratulations and thank you for sharing.
Excellent! I use the RF 200-800mm lens with my R5 most days. (After living near Fairbanks for 30 years, we retired and are now in western Montana) I like that you label the distance (15 yards for example) on your photos in this youtube video. THANK YOU!

I'll be honest, although I sold my R5, and have been shooting with my R7's for 2 yrs (totally the right decision, for my small birds, where reach is always the #1 priority) if money were no problem, I'd like to add an R5 Mk II back to my gear collection. Not sure how much I'd use it, but I think it would be great for larger creatures, or BIF. I do still believe my 200-800 is the Holy Grail at any price, regardless of the camera crop or FF. Just SO much more versatile than a big white. So great to see your fantastic photography from Alaska, as 50 degrees is "a little cold" for me :) lol Great video :) Thank you :) That Northern Hawk Owl !!! WoW ! :) I would just about freeze to death for that bird ! :) lol
The r5 MKII with the 200-800 is great for birds and you can still drop the 1.4 TC on it and get great images. I still need to make that video, but the images are crisp. Gone are the days where the tc totally ruined your images. Still degrades a touch but not enough to make you regret it.
@WILDALASKA all this modern gear is so nice, it's not really about one lens or body being bad, and another good, but rather, one or the other is better for an individuals specific needs.
The sensor readout speed of the R7 is 30ms, ie glacial and rolling shutter is immense. You must be shooting stationary birds with your r7 and not bif. My R5 has a 15ms readout speed, but the rolling shutter can still be objectional with small fast moving birds My R5mk ii has a 6.5ms sensor readout, amd so far I havnt had a problem with rolling shutter artifacts on small fast moving bif. The biggest probelm with the R7 is the dodgy af. The R7 af has clearly been downgraded by Canon to help sell the more expensive R5 and R3. If you dont nail focus your shot is toast. Back in the day, the 7D did not have as good focus as the 5d3, and the 7D2 did not have as good focus as the 5D4 - Canon made sure of that. Product differentiation. As for R7 extra 'reach'. The R7 has a 30% greater pixel density than the R5. Can you make use of it in most instances with 750mm or longer ? No - heat distortion becomes the limiting factor if you crop too hard. I personally find crop sensor cameras pointless if you are still going to pay for, and carry the extra mass of, full frame lenses.
@nordic5490 yes, mostly small, perched Songbirds and such. I'm really not much into taking, or viewing BIF. I mean, I do occasionally see BIF that I like, but I won't give it any extra points just for being a BIF. For me, it still needs to be close, sharp, great color, contrast, exposure, good eye contact, etc.... oh, and no blue sky BG. This said ^ I have done some Hummers in Hover shots, with ES on the R7, and surprisingly, some come out great (depending on where there wings are in the stroke, when the camera fired) it also did great too with EFCS.... But I quit doing that when I starting hearing about all the MS failures with the R7. Trying to preserve the life of my cameras.
@@nordic5490 ok lot of iffy stuff here, but the biggest is the 750mm comment. Longer lenses and focal length is not for REACH its for magnification at acceptable quality distances. To enlarge a small bird at 10 yards and such, not shoot a small bird at 70 yards
Thanks for the videos, very informative. My 200-800 will be here tomorrow, can't wait to put it on the R5 and start testing for the migratory bird this winter in Central and South Florida.
The Northern Hawk-owl just stole the show! The images and video were sharp, despite the higher ISO and slower shutter speeds. The excellent IBIS in the camera and the optical image stabilization in the lens make it possible to obtain excellent results despite the smaller maximum aperture of the lens! Lovely videos and photos... thank you for sharing these... Good to see CANON... as at first I was a bit "shocked" (LOL) after reading the text on your hat... again... AWESOME! Have a lovely X-Mas and a 2025 full of great photographic moments! Take care! (BTW I pair my 200-800 on a R5C and a C70...) Ciao, Max
I have the R3 with the 200-800mm. They work terrific together. No issues with IQ or AF. The biggest issue for me is the “throw” between 200mm and 800mm. I think “throw” is the appropriate term. Basically, the amount of rotation to zoom… It takes an effort to get from 800mm to about the 300mm-400mm range due to the amount of turn required. I basically treat the 200-800 as two lenses based upon what I’m shooting and the distance of the subject from me. Essentially, I use it as a 450mm-800mm or 200-550mm or so. I shoot aviation… It’s a really good lens!
Awesome episode Scott !!! soo relaxing watching your episode. the only problem with your videos is the fact they distract me from my editing, which is why silly me sometimes prefers to watch youtubes I can follow with half an eye, heheh. Unbelievable you could approach that other so close man !! Did you give him/her some tranquilizer ? It reminds when back in May we went searching for foxes and their pups in Amsterdam (or rather its dunes) .. and because I didn't expect to get close I was also armed with my 200-800 .. but one of those pups even approached to a single yard 🙈 When you're able to zoom in, the 800mm f9 actually gives the same bokeh as 600/6.3 and even better than 500/7.1. But indeed when zooming out a 200/6.3 requires good positioning to have any chance on bokeh ! Depending on the focal length I need, I switch between 100-500 & 200-800, but I'm no longer using my silly 420-700. Some days I'm really happy with the 200-800, but some other days nearly all shots (except the close ups) are soft for a single reason: heat haze ! In fall I even did some macro wildlife with in fall: flies on top of mushroom near 3 yards. Last Friday I did my first shoot with the 200-800 on my new R5ii, and had a great session with bearded reedlings. I feel the lens worked clearly better than with the original R5. I bagged 7300 shots from single battery, which is a huge improvement over shooting the R5 in EFCS to avoid its rolling shutter. Your final footage with the northern hawk-owl was simply magic 💪
Thanks Scott for sharing! I admit I can't wait to receive my R5 Mark II to pair it with my RF 200-800 (maybe in January ...). Beautiful images offered here again! Take care of you, Ludo
I only finally secured the 200-800. I have only had two opportunities to use. The full moon in November and once for birding. I did catch some awesome shots on my first try with the R5M2 with pre-capture on. Hated the wait, but glad I finally got it as a 400 or 600 are outside my budget.
As usual, your video’s and persona are incredible. Really can’t afford the R5ii, but wish Canon would make a 30 or 33 megapixel full frame camera so we can all get good pictures and video’s like yours. All the best to you and your crew, it’s great watching the fun you guys are having, getting excellent pictures and video’s of wild life in Alaska. Brisn
very good video, congratulations. I have to say that I notice much more sharpness in photography than in video in the Canon r5 mark ii, I'm thinking about buying the CANON R5 MARK II or the Nikon Z9, regarding the video, the Canon has 14 bits of colour in 8K and the Nikon Z9 12, but I see that the Nikon has better focus EYE AF than the Canon, is that correct?
Both are very good on Eye AF on birds. Other than birds the canon is a bit better. Not a ton but better. The sharpness in video is pretty good on both also. Remember there's a lot of difference on how we view video. in video you want natural motion blur or our eye doesn't like it. think old time movies etc or those high frame action movies. Where the Nikon wins is in image stabilization, but the r5mkii closed that gap some more.
While tempted to add the RF 200-800 for my R7 and R5, I opted for the RF 100-500 as my primary birding lens. I know it lacks reach, but it weighs 1/3 (1.5 lbs) less, which is not a trivial difference. L glass with weather proofing also makes a difference.
@@WILDALASKA Agreed. I have a progressive neurologic disorder, which now confines me to a wheelchair. The extra 1.5 pounds is a real challenge to me. But I continue to find joy in nature photography, which I don't wish to give up as long as I can avoid it.
I have the 200 800 myself and I love here, but I don’t own the R5MKII because this combination works only with a lot of light Use the 200 800 on my R6 and wait for the R6 MKIII, think this will be a great combination
Nah the R5MKII and the 200-800 work well together. You not gaining that much with the r6 vs r5 series for low light. Not enough to ruin your day anyway.
Headed to Southeast Alaska on a photo trip this summer. Mostly based from a small sailboat, but some short hiking also. In that scenario would you rather have the 200-800 or 100-500?
Hello, I just came across your channel. I have to tell you I love it. I just recently purchased a R6 Mark two and the same 200 to 800 Cannon lens. I haven’t had the opportunity to really take it out yet. A couple of questions if you don’t mind, could you share what strap you’re using (the blue one) as I don’t want to attach a strap to the body with the weight of the lens and also the covering that you’re using would be wonderful to know if you wouldn’t mind. I appreciate your channel. Subscribed. Thanks again. Joe
Welcome aboard Joe and thanks fro the kind words. The Strap is the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap amzn.to/3ZVjA6c and you can see it and some other items in this video we did a few weeks ago here ruclips.net/video/Ltgo-54ZIdQ/видео.html
As always an amazing video and explanation :) what you think about this lense vs nikons 180-600 with and without tc. Im struggling to decide if i want to go nikon or canon. The lenses and price from nikon is temting
Just look at the overall lens lineup as the 180-600 and the 200-800 are just different beasts. Invest int he lens lineup is usually my advice and remember it goes in cycles..Nikon may be up now and a couple years canon may be up, and pattern repeats....
I am rather new to the Canon universe having shot nature for years exclusively with Pentax. I have the 100-500 and the 1.4 TC along with a couple of other R mount lenses. I have been kicking around my next purchase, a 500 or 600 f4 EF II (RF are just too expensive in my wheelhouse). Your video gives me food for thought though. Any inkling how it compares to the 800mm f11? (never thought I'd ever consider lenses this slow)
if you want the 800 go the 200-800 route. If you are going to end game photography where your gear is no longer an excuse, then the 500 or 600 f/4 for your best glass in the line.
Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this compared to the 100-500 on the R7. Ive been looking at the 100-500 with 1.4x, of course its a lot more money then the 200-800, but its probably better in low light without the tc. Similar with it. Weight is also something im considering, cause I want to get rid of my sigma 150-600c with adapter really.
The sea otter clearly didn't have a care in the world! The hawk owl footage and photos were incredible. I've been using the 200-800 for a year now and find it to be super sharp, most of the time. I'd rather have the 800mm and less cropping than 500mm with a lot of cropping. I hardly use my 100-500 anymore, unless I know the subject will be very close.
@@WILDALASKA I'll be ordering one then. I tried one of those life guard skin wraps for another lens of mine and the installation sucks big time and I ruined 90 dollars, Never again.
I have the R7 and RF 100-400 but for a lot of my shots I'm missing the reach and in some cases sharpness I need. If you had to choose between the 200 - 800 or 100 - 500 which would you pick?
200-800 and you have to know the distance to each size of animal for detail. +20 yards on a finch is going to be bleh, but you can shoot 60 yards on a deer. remember focal length helps in enlarging a subject at a good detail distance not add more 'reach'. think enlargement more than reach.
Hello, I just bought the RF 200 800 lens and I'm using it on Canon a R8. Looking at the unprocessed RAW files, at 800mm F9 images seems slightly soft, with a slight loss of contrast (similar to haze), stopping down to F10 it improves. Nothing excessive but I don't see this behavior on the RF100-500. Is it typical of this telephoto lens? Thank you
Distance to subject is a HUGE factor. direction of light, etc. list goes on and on as to why the images could be 'soft' usually its us and not the lens as the 2 lenses iq is pretty similar.
The 200-800 is possibly the most underrated lens ever. I think people were a bit preconceived with the idea that it's not an L lens, it is absolutely incredible. Fantastic subjects in this video, the Northern Hawk Owl was over the top.
Both the 200800 and 100400 are bloody amazing and affordable. I don't get why so many people are complaining rf lenses are expensive when we have amazing options like these. Focus is almost as fast as my L lenses.
Enjoyable video of an enjoyable dat - Love my 200-8- - waited 7 months for it - last week took it to Conowingo Dam Maryland shooting Bald Eagles - great time - usually on the R6 Mk2but tried it on the R7 for extra reach - a challenge to shoot at 1200mm for birds in fligh, hand holding but some good shots can be had with practice - looking forward to R7 Mk2 and R6 Mk3 …..
Have you had any issues with the R5mkii with the battery grip in cold weather. I keep getting errors saying change batteries in cold weather even when batteries have a full charge.
No issues. Been in -20f a time or 2 and no issues. Most of the time lately it's been single digits. I did have a couple times @ 50%battery life that it told me the batteries were dead in the first few weeks of use, but hasn't happened since. It was in the 40's when it happened, so not a cold issue. Just pulled batteries and then back in and I wad @ 50% and going again.
@ thank you! Hasn’t been that cold here in NC it’s been in the 20’s and 30’s. Photographing night football games I have received the error multiple times after camera goes into sleep mode. Using it as my 2nd camera with a wider lens on it has made it somewhat useless since I can’t trust it will come on when I need to switch to a wider lens. Not sure if it’s a battery grip issue or battery issue. When I got home and batteries were at room temp there were showing 100% charge.
Where did you get the lens cover? I just received my 200-800 after months of waiting. I shoot every late winter into fall in Yellowstone National Park, and I'm trying to get setup for next March. I also set up my R8 like you have yours setup learning it now. Thanks for what you do.
It's this LENSCOAT NEOPRENE COVER amzn.to/4h4bgY6 I made a gift video that has it in the video also. You can watch it here ruclips.net/video/Ltgo-54ZIdQ/видео.html
@@soumakbinduwildlife again what has that got tot do with this video?? I shoot both and review both. And the lenses are night and day as far as what they do..cant really compare the 2.
@ I had the R3, but I sold it 3 months ago. waiting for the R1, but I doubt whether I will switch to Om-sytem due to the high weight, so for now I don't have a camera.
Sorry to burst that bubble but with the 1.4 it's not sharper than the 200-800 without a TC. I've tested both extensively in the field. Plus its shorter and higher aperture (small but higher)

👍🦉🦦
Thanks Scott for sharing! I admit I can't wait to receive my R5 Mark II to pair it with my RF 200-800 (maybe in January ...).
Beautiful images offered here again! Take care of you, Ludo
Thanks and you will be a happy camper when it arrives.
I only finally secured the 200-800. I have only had two opportunities to use. The full moon in November and once for birding. I did catch some awesome shots on my first try with the R5M2 with pre-capture on. Hated the wait, but glad I finally got it as a 400 or 600 are outside my budget.
Sounds like you're off to a good start!
Awesome video!! Just subscribed!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, welcome aboard!
Brisn
Thanks Brisn, I appreciate your kind words!
that Hawk was stellar!!!!
It sure was. Been very lucky with the Northern Hawk Owls this year. Next couple outing videos we have more shots of some.
Great footage of the Owl!! I've been using this same combo and am now thinking of selling all my other lenses!
Its a great combo
And that NHO! Wow!!
Yes, I have been very lucky with them this year.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Do you recall what you video settings (Sraw, or bit rate, ... ) are for the hawk at time 18:37?
Same settings as in this video ruclips.net/video/pqYv6QVu6cA/видео.html
very good video, congratulations.
Ive used both extensively and I find the 200-800 much more useful in the field for what im shooting, but everyone has a different shooting needs
@@WILDALASKA Agreed. I have a progressive neurologic disorder, which now confines me to a wheelchair. The extra 1.5 pounds is a real challenge to me. But I continue to find joy in nature photography, which I don't wish to give up as long as I can avoid it.
@@wellingtoncrescent2480 love to hear you are getting out there. so good for the soul being out in nature
I have the 200 800 myself and I love here, but I don’t own the R5MKII because this combination works only with a lot of light
Use the 200 800 on my R6 and wait for the R6 MKIII, think this will be a great combination
Nah the R5MKII and the 200-800 work well together. You not gaining that much with the r6 vs r5 series for low light. Not enough to ruin your day anyway.
@ merry Christmas and a happy new year
Headed to Southeast Alaska on a photo trip this summer. Mostly based from a small sailboat, but some short hiking also. In that scenario would you rather have the 200-800 or 100-500?
200-800
I've heard some people describe the 200-800 soft at the 800 end, this is not the case looking at your incredible images
The lens is sharp throughout all it focal ranges.
@ yes, thats my struggle to decide. Sadly in norway no camera store is lending out the gear. So have to relaying on channels like yours :)
Weight is also something im considering, cause I want to get rid of my sigma 150-600c with adapter really.
easy answer 200-800
@@WILDALASKA Im very surprised at that, in the UK, I can pick both up for a very similar price, just the lenses that is
Any videos coming out with the Nikon z50ii?
If I can get a hold of one. It's not one i'm buying for myself. So will have to be a rental or loaner.
Thanks Scott!
👍
I also really like my 200-800 on my R5II works great, BTW does the lens cover fit great or is it flimsy? I'm thinking of purchasing one for mine.
Very snug. It's why I love the lens coat stuff. There is a link to it in the description of the video.
@@WILDALASKA I'll be ordering one then. I tried one of those life guard skin wraps for another lens of mine and the installation sucks big time and I ruined 90 dollars, Never again.
I use an EF 70-200 L with a 2x extender and RF adapter on R6 mk2.
Very good lens
@WILDALASKA Also use on an older R camera because of the 30 mega pixel sensor. I enjoy using the R most.
@@WILDALASKAgood to know. Especially seeing as that lens is cheaper. I appreciate your insight and love your videos. Keep up the great work!
These new silver-ring lenses are incredible. Have you played with the 28-70/2.8 yet?
Yeah, it is a great lens. I love how it performs!
The best is the rf100-500
Great owl pictures
thanks
A dream for all wildlife photographers and filmmakers. Unfortunately, I don't have much free budget at the moment!
👍
Curious how you’re calculating distance of your subjects?
EXIF info from the camera. You an add it form the metadata window in Lightroom.
Envious of your outing!
😊🦉
Where did you get the lens cover? I just received my 200-800 after months of waiting. I shoot every late winter into fall in Yellowstone National Park, and I'm trying to get setup for next March. I also set up my R8 like you have yours setup learning it now. Thanks for what you do.
It's this LENSCOAT NEOPRENE COVER amzn.to/4h4bgY6 I made a gift video that has it in the video also. You can watch it here ruclips.net/video/Ltgo-54ZIdQ/видео.html
I've got an R6ii would this lens still be a player for me?
Yes, I used it a lot on the R8.
ground pod !!??
?
still i go with z8 and 180-600
Why? This isn't a competition video. I shoot both systems and both are amazing. Can one edge the other out? in some areas and some not. 😔
@@WILDALASKA It's the lens not camera..Nikon has variety of affordable lenses
@@soumakbinduwildlife again what has that got tot do with this video?? I shoot both and review both. And the lenses are night and day as far as what they do..cant really compare the 2.
You're a better man than me. I wouldn't lay on rocks!
pretty smooth rocks on the bay
Im.sticking with my rf800 f11, its light and sharp, sharper than the 200-800 at 800mm.
No it's not. Where does everyone get this stuff?
I have the 100-500 with a 1.4 extender. this combination is sharper than the 200-800. but the shared images are certainly not bad
Which body do you use?
@ I had the R3, but I sold it 3 months ago. waiting for the R1, but I doubt whether I will switch to Om-sytem due to the high weight, so for now I don't have a camera.
Sorry to burst that bubble but with the 1.4 it's not sharper than the 200-800 without a TC. I've tested both extensively in the field. Plus its shorter and higher aperture (small but higher)
@ everyone has their right in this matter
Just bought this lol
