      Calling him John was very sensitive and she said that mostly at their most vulnerable moments, for the two of them it was always a symbol of sad departure. Her calling him just Master Chief, which she generally used to say on their official missions where they were a happier and hopeful pair, is to cheer him up, to remind him what they already went through together and how they always kept fighting. It is to encourage the brave soldier in him to move on and keep on going. John as a human is depressed and vulnerable, but as Master Chief, he is unstoppable, and she needs MC to finish the fight and John to move on.

      Cortana thought she was doing what she needed to do for the greater good, even deeper, she was doing it for selfish reasons.
      Just like Hasley did when she created the Spartan 2 program. Just like Halsey did when she tried to hide the remaining Spartans in Onyx. But unlike Halsey, Cortana admitted she was wrong. Even if it was too late.
      Now John and the Weapon have been given a gift. To learn from the mistakes that have been made and to be the ultimate paragon of what Halsey and Cortana thought they could achieve on their own.
      It’s a beautiful send off.

More than likely due to the fact that Cortana is basically killed off-screen (like they had this happen literally during the six month gap while Chief was still drifting in space), and that this goodbye is basically a pre-recorded message, it's not even a real time hologram conversation just another "echo". It also doesn't help that when she did sacrifice herself that again Chief wasn't there in real time to see it (another reason why I dislike the off-screen death), so as things stand Chief's last physical encounter with Cortana is the shitty betrayal scene in Halo 5.
      But even with all that said, it looks like she's dead this time permanently and I hope it stays that way so 343 don't ruin her like they did in Halo 5. Should've left her death in Halo 4 alone.

At another point, also explained in campaign btw, she threatened Atriox similarly and when the Brutes refused to stand down she used the Guardians to destroy their entire homeworld, which is why they wanted the ring to be their new home.

    I understand a lot of people were very unsatisfied with this ending, but I find it to be one of the best endings in all of Halo, if not the best.
    343 has started a trend where they are exploring how Chief is a human under all that armor, all that bravado, and all that badassery. Cortana throughout all the Halo games has been John's reminder of his humanity. It's beautifully ironic to me how he's finally got a good grasp of that once she's finally gone.
    John knows that with his talents as a soldier he has the ability to change the course of all of humanity. However, this led to John believing that all the "failures" he has experienced was his fault. It's his fault for Samuel's death. It's his fault for humanity losing. And it's his fault Cortana is gone. Him coming to terms with her death and accepting this new AI has indicated to me that he's no longer blaming himself when things don't always turn out great. He's not a machine. He's not some god. He's just human.
    This story and theme is something I believe 343 is capable of telling. Yes I'm sad Cortana is gone and yes the story could have been better. But I choose to trust 343 and the new adventures they will take us on. All ends are beginnings ~

      I really like how in this game they explore his humanity and not just taking on entire armies with little to no character development. His character becomes more relatable with us normal people, the feeling of guilt and depression, regret. Really great work from 343 on this campaign.

      i think with the Fall Of Reach releasing when Halo 5 came out, they wanted to show Chief’s emotional turmoil for others during his childhood before it was burned away by training. To emphasize he was a human, with emotions, who makes mistakes, etc. I think the recontextualization that in the Bungie games that Chief was essentially a husk of a human until the end of 2 when he left Cortana behind is a GREAT idea. That in 3, the first crack of humanity coming back is shown when he befriends Arbiter and comes back for Cortana. Halo 4 had some flaws, mainly with The Didact, Del Rio and how you needed the lore books and ten goddamn chapters of Spartan Ops to fully ‘get’ the story, but behind all that it’s actually really good. 5 is, well 5, lmao.

      Yeah yeah that's great... or... and hear me out on this.
      Chief wakes up on the abandoned UNSC ship, Cortana brings him out of Cryo sleep because they were getting boarded by Insurrectionists. Halo 4,5 and Infinite? Horrible nightmare of possibilities infused PTSD. The UNSC is being threatened by Insurrectionists that only want to destroy the Earth and everything the UNSC stands for but NOT to kill any colonies just trying to survive, Spartan 4s have mostly been rendered as just fancy special forces and some even joining the Insurrectionists as popular unrest continues to spread throughout UNSC controlled territory.

      Cortana was trapped on the Halo and Atriox had almost full control of it, also Cortana thought that Chief was dead at the time so the only way that she could try to stop the Banished from fully controlling the ring from her entrapment was to sacrifice herself and destroy the ring so that it would be useless. She left this message for the chance that Chief was still alive because she knows how "lucky" he is.

      Yeah part of the problem of Infinite's story (at least to me) is that they relegated too much information on previous storylines in other games and characters other people cared about to audio logs, flashbacks and dialogue. Makes it really not feel as much like a follow up to Halo 5 as it should be in my opinion. I get people hate that game but I think they should've done more at least where the actual cutscenes are concerned.
      I very highly doubt Chief would be okay with Weapon taking Cortana's name and that'd be one of the worst decisions 343 could make with this character. I just took the scene as her asking Chief and wanting reassurance from him that it is okay to name herself. But at the same time it makes me worried that might be the case since she literally doesn't even say what it is. Guess we'll have to wait for the eventual DLC/other campaigns for confirmation. 😕

A copy of Cortana (which we've seen in the book Halo: First Strike) is different and copied directly from Cortana herself. Halsey replicated the process that had initially created Cortana to essentially create a new Cortana which she could do because Cortana was created from a clone of her own brain. There's so many unanswered questions so I am REALLY hoping they do campaign expansion DLCs like with Halo Wars 2 and don't just let us sit on multiplayer updates for the next decade. After all they did say they were done with standalone titles and only focusing on this game for a while so I'm almost 100% certain they're doing campaign expansions instead of releasing numerous halo games which makes sense in a way. No sense in wasting an already developed world that you're going to continue a story line on anyways. While this ending is good, I think she could have got a much better one or deserved a much better one being an iconic character. There are even multiple options.
    1. On screen death, she shows up (She saves chief from harbinger, although this would be the same as 4, however damaged "mortally", beyond repair), saying the same things and she could have quoted Johnson here to make it different, referring to Weapon. After Cortana says Now it's up to you, Chief is still blaming himself for failing her, but Cortana replies: "It is not your fault, You never let me go John, (Cortana looks at Weapon) never let her go.", then disintegrates towards the chief.
    2. She shows up, saves the chief from Harbinger and is forced to be deleted by chief later. She asks him and convinces him to do that, at the same time talking to Weapon as well. That would be indeed even more sad to witness.
    3. This one is a little bit extreme, but the UNSC discovers a way to make a human body for her, the AI equivalent dies, and Cortana - with no memory - starts a new life as a real human, which if I understand correctly was her wish in the previous games. Chief does not communicate with her, lets her go out to the world, as the sun shines on her, feeling warmth.
    I think all of these 3 endings would be better and wouldn't feel rushed.

    • @22slice
      @22slice 2 года назад +4

      I feel like all these kinda miss the point, it's too starting anew. Not remaining with what we have. Cortana being gone already makes you feel what Chief feels, the emptiness of not being able to save her, like he says at one point during the game to Weapon. having her be alive would feel like 343 trying to hold on to the previous stories when "this isn't an end, it's a chance to make amends. to rectify mistakes."

      @tlfearofthedarkhun387 2 года назад

Imagine if she became human with zero memories and chief simply watching her go out of the world on Earth. (He is not allowed to interact with her). The point of mine is that she deserved a much better (impactful) send off while at the same time not being able to save her. Imagine if Darth Vader was sent off similarly to how Cortana was, ROTJ wouldn't be the same at all. Here it felt like, "Oh we made a mistake in 5, we now just toss her away", I am not saying it is a bad effort, but this is a character known for 20 years?
