- Today we are taking an in-depth look at the Friedman IR-X. This is a super cool Pre-amp, amp model pedaI that allows you to bring the Friedman sound anywhere. I hope you enjoyed this video! with regard to your criticism about the boost functionality, the IR-X does have boost lock functionality, accessible via the editor software

I believe the boost lock IS an option. Use the editor to activate the boost lock.

@@JordanSteeleit doesnt work for me. They need to fix this in an update. It leaves boost on both channels. I want it to remember channel 1 no boost, channel 2 with boost. If its plugged in i can do this by changing channels on the pc, but can’t get it to store this
Amazing playing and review. Totally agree on the bypass. Really my only knock against the iRX. Running it into the return of my 40 watt Dirty Shirley and it is amazing. Just wish I didn't have to buy a switcher to run this set up. Tones are A+ though.

Sick chops! I’ve been using the IR-x now for about two weeks live in a 4 cable setup with a TC electronics G System. I have a modded JCM 800 that I’m trying to leave at home and this is probably going to achieve that. Pretty happy with it. I would prefer a rack version as the knobs get turned too easily during setup and tear down. Always having to reset the positions each show. But I would tell anyone looking to scale down their live rig this is better than any modeler if you can get by with less tone/ variation requirements.
Side note, I found this out the hard way, when using midi to program it, if you’re using the editor at the same time, the midi changes won’t work. Once you unplug the usb cable the midi changes will work. It’s a bit of an oversight because if you want to use midi to change the features not available from the outside you have to use the usb connection to select them. Just know that when you store those changes, they will work after you disconnect the usb.

The very expensive price of this 2 tubes preamp pedal can be overrated vs the great ht metal by Blackstar and the great Two notes revolt (with a decent price) with its 3 channels with so great tones and with a brightness that had not Blackstar
Considering tons of preamp pedals there were before with tubes like Hughes Kettner tubeman, tube factor, Amt ss 11-20, Legacy Vai model, Ibanez and Effectrode (3 tubes inside) and some Vox pedals too (some great sound before the Revolt) and many more,
it could be interested but the demos do not sound so good as one of these list but happy you like it (or maybe just a demo for marketing influence)

Changing the foot switches to bypass, channel swap, and boost lock - that would make a great mod. I wonder if it's possible considering the MIDI switching implies that there are digitally controlled relays.😢

Man... amazing playing.. I think if you utilize the midi option you will be able to erase some of the cons you brought up. I'm currently using it through my Helix as I'm building my pedalboard and use the Helix as the midi controller for the IRX. Take care🤙

@@JordanSteele I am not sure about fractal gear. I'm assuming it should be possible. I've considered switching to fractal but hesitant cause always afraid when I make the decision to buy it gets discontinued. Like the FM3 😂

I had this pedal for a week and honestly it's a good preamp but nothing more than this. It's an average preamp without any "Wow" factor. Sounds good only for the brand on it. Returned. I can happily live without it.
Which one is your fav that you mostly use ?
@@anatol1204 I use real amps and not preamps. But I was looking for a more portable tube solution to blend with a digital multieffect. Didn't like it. Yes you can feel the tube but I was expecting more.

i've had mine for a few hours, already going back. helix sounds exactly the same at the same settings. guy in the video doesn't seem to realize if he holds the store button the boost would stay on. just not what i was expecting either.
been digging into more videos, pulled it back out of the box and made some changes, while the helix model nails the channel 2 sound, it does begin to not hold as much weight against the ir-x. is it worth $499? i'd think more $299/399. going to keep it a while longer and see if it grows on me more.

@@JordanSteele I've had the IR-x for a few weeks, thing is great! Replaced my distortion pedals, and makes my live sound pop out more. Great value for the money
I totally agree on the button layout. 2 channel buttons is a waste of real estate, they don’t do that for their amp channel footswtches so its an odd choice. It should be Channel toggle/boost/bypass. The boost should remain on for a particular channel until turned off even when changing channels. Having a bypass you could pair it with a clean preamp, like a ua dream, as well for more flavors. Now you need a switcher-which is a bummer. The thump and presence should be accessible from the unit not the app(like the boost side knobs). How do you tailor the highs and lows in a live environment when its on your board, drag your computer out? The boost button, boost led, and boost volume knob are laid out weirdly, why not all on the same side? Possibly future generations will have these changes. Hopefully stereo outs as well. Sounds great though.
I wish it the FX loop was stereo for headphones playing, and that it had a digital output (USB or SPDIF)
I run the stereo effects into stereo monitors
