One thing that needs to be known. This Truce had nothing to do with the higher ups. This was completely done by the soldiers.
In fact generals assured that it will never happen again.
They used snipers and artillery to stop it, and they had to move companies, as they were worry soldiers wouldn't fight against people they just met.
Also I think some soldier finished in a martial court and condamned for treason or executed.
@@Fabi72g though by the next year the war had become so brutal that most soldiers didn't want to.
@@Fabi72g some of the units had to be re located as the next day they refused to fire

"The Christmas truce of 1914 showed that, given the choice, people do not want to be out fighting and killing each other." - Ron Paul
christmas day 1914, for the first time in a "modern" major conflict and also the last, the two sides laid down their weapons and crossed the great divide to great eachother as brothers.
Floor’s ending gives me full body chills.
yep, I think it helps re enforce the msg of the song.
Agreed... I don't know what it is but there is something magical about her voice.
I agree
Tom, in case no one has said it, the cross you see at the end is a real thing, and a historical landmark! It was erected in 1999 as a memorial to the dead on the 85th anniversary by a group calling itself the Khaki Chums, where some of the worst fighting took place. It's located in Ypres, Belgium, about 20 miles from the boarder with France.
I was wondering if the Cross was a possible landmark. Thanks for the info!
people leave footballs there...

You didn't recognise Floor's aria in the credits, it did say. . . . . . . .
This truce was due to the men not the countries, it never happened again as the Generals made sure of it (harder to kill someone you know). These men all wanted to be home for the Holiday and be with family and friends, here in the frozen mud they shared that longing and found humanity in the midst of complete insanity. As a vet this is also a remembrance song (11/11 just passed) for those in all wars who never made it home for any Holidays. May they rest in the peace they fought so hard to bring while the rest of us continue the insanity and try and capture that fleeting humanity they had even for such a short time. Floor's Aria at the end was stunning, the Valkyrie Goddess collecting the dead and bringing them home to rest from the battlefield. Amazing song and even more amazing video. Sabaton bring the human experience of historical events to life more than any old dusty history book and makes you experience those events through those that went through them.

Thanks for the heartfelt reaction. The saddest part to me was that the generals made sure that this could not happen in the following years by ordering attacks and shelling on Christmas.
Greetings from Iceland.
It's December 24th, 1914, Christmas eve. The war has been going on for about 4 months now. Both sides just recently dug in and started the whole trench warfare thing that is iconic when it comes to WW1. Many soldiers were still trying to get used to trench warfare and the war was supposed to be over by now, because many soldiers thought they'd be back over by Christmas. So the war is still starting to get going at this point, it's many people's first Christmas away from home and obviously also their first Christmas on the front. So we have a ton of soldiers who are already bummed out because they have to be in this war, but now they also can't spend Christmas with their family. Now they are also expected to fight during Christmas.
To be fair, commanders on both sides tried to bring the Christmas spirit to the trenches. Christmas trees, the soldier's families had the ability to send the soldiers gifts, letters, the whole deal. That lifted the mood up again, that and the fact that the weather, which has been horrible for weeks now, cleared up. For the first time in weeks or months, they didn't have to worry about their trenches filling up or collapsing. They also had their first "solid" ground under their feet since weeks, because all the mud froze.
So here we are, Christmas eve of 1914. gun fire has dwindled across most sectors, in some it stopped entirely. Imagine how weird it must've felt to hear nothing but silence after getting used to hearing gunfire pretty much 24/7 and that for months. It's said that the German lines started singing Christmas carols, because.. why not. Then the British sensed a challenge and joined in, they sang for a while, and then they started shouting Christmas greetings across No Man's Land. Then one German soldier peaked his head over the trench and started walking into no man's land. Then a British soldier walked into no man's land. Then one soldier at the time both sides started meeting up in the bombed out fields of no man's land. they started talking, exchanging gifts from home, played football. A German barber gave haircuts. Stuff like this happened all across the western front. Not everywhere of course.. There were sectors were people kept fighting and ignored every attempt at a truce. Sometimes the truce only held for the day. But some even held for about a week, right before new years eve.
The commanders put an end to it by ordering artillery barrages or sent snipers to break the truce.
I don't think I have to say that something like this never happened again during WW1, at least not to this extent. In the following years the few soldiers who actually managed to see another Christmas often wouldn't even think of doing something like this again. By that time they saw gas, zeppelin attacks on civilians, tanks, brutal battles like the battle of verdun that started in early 1916 and ended in late 1916 right before Christmas, leaving around 750.000 casualties.
There were still attempts of doing something like the Christmas truce of 1914 again, but the commanders didn't even give them a chance. They ordered 24h artillery barrages during Christmas and everyone who still tried to form a truce was court martialed.
The Christmas truce was one of the last beams of humanity that shined through the clouds of war, before the storm started. A storm so violent that it caused an entire generation to be lost (the generation of WW1 is called "the lost generation").
I heard this story many years ago. People can learn from this.....but I am afraid they won't.
@@annemarie9602 Some will... some always do ;)
One sad note to add to this that during the month of December 1914 was the Winter Operations launched by the British to stop fraternisation over Christmas. These Operations would of course go disastrously leading to huge amounts of casualties with little to no ground being taken.
So many comments and no one is stating the obvious:
There is a lot more "Humanity" and peaceful spirit in humans than what we are led to believe. The fact that this amazing episode is left out of school books and most history books is a testament to how even these books are made to demonize "humans" in general and further promote a hate agenda under the hood in a very subtle way.
The fact that commanders and generals feel the need and/or are given orders to punish those that wish to behave like humans and not like warmachines is a testament of how every modern (and many old) war is a matter of propaganda and putting people against each other, while the Elite that designed these wars laughs at Humanity's face and uses its workforce for personal luxury.
Sabaton is such an amazing fucking band... they went like "lets make a christmas song" and its one of the most epic masterpieces ever made.
Coming from the UK I was already aware of this but it's great that it's being shared to so many people. And Floor at the end is just an added bonus.
Now you can also the husband of Floor Jansen that is Hannes the drummer of Sabaton.
Yes, that is Floor at the end.
i teach History in highschool and use Sabaton videos any chance i can. Greets from Costa Rica!
Wish my teacher was like that....that old hag literally forbade me to mention sabaton in a research saying that "it's just crap with nothing to do with history"
To me, this is sooooo much more than a Christmas song, it is about being human in inhumane times. I hope they will perform this one live in Antwerp next year.
Sabaton created a Christmas Classic. Beautifully and brilliantly done. They are masters at what they do. Great reaction as usual Tom! Top notch… and thank you for this… I’ve been waiting for your reaction for this gem because I knew it would be really special… and it was. Also… That was the amazing and phenomenal Floor Jansen singing during the closing credits. Did you catch that? 🙂
We REALLY need a Sabaton and Nightwish co-headlining US tour and we need Floor to come out and sing “The Christmas Truce” with her hubby Hannes and the rest of the guys. Wouldn’t that be the best show ever? 👍🏻🤘🏻🌲
I agree, unfortunately it will not have the recognition that it deserves 😕👍🎸🎸
Love Sabaton song and video gave me goosebumps. Loved the reaction.
Good to see you back. You missed Floor - in fact you turned down Floor’s wordless soprano vocal over the credits at the end - sacrilege!
Thats Tom jellynuts for you
Forgive me! I was just so blown away by the story of this song. Just incredible from start to finish
The fact that they had Floor Jansen singing during the credits, adds something extra to it all.😊 The frosting on the cake.. 🤩 (It might be a little easier for Sabaton to get her involved, since she's married to Hannes... 😉)
And yet, the song and music video itself, is mindblowing! 🤘
I don't know what problem people have with credits. Most of them simply stop the song, at least Tom let it go in the background, but talking over it he missed Floor beautiful harmonies.
@@lionfromthenorth4580 I keep thinking of that “can we have ____? we have _____ at home” meme, but this time it’s turned on it’s head because what they have at home is Floor!
What an Amazing Christmas

the music

And the video✌
It's also a piece of history.
You can learn a lot.

They fought because their kings wanted it, not because they wanted it.
The balls on the German soldier to get out of the trenches and say Merry Christmas is truly made of the steel used in the construction of Bismarck.
Imagine Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve Sarajevo transiting into Sabaton Christmas Truce they need to tour together right now.
Other way around. The Bismarck is made out of the same steel that that German soldier's balls are made of
thanks for reacting to this masterpiece.....now for the history part.....there is a statue in england that shows one axis and one alied soldier shaking hands with a soccerbal in the middle.....and the cross still stands here in belgium....in ypres....and has the inscription..."Lest we forget".....
and the vocals of Floor Jansen on the endcredits....love that....
My first reaction to this song and video was to cry. It really hit me hard.
Sabaton have really got this right. The song, video and emotion from it all are just perfect.
I lost 2 greatgrandads and a great uncle in the trenches during ww1.
Millions of men from a host of nations killed and degraded, their humanity stripped for what? - so the hierarchy gets political gain, land, money etc. They didn’t give a damn about the ordinary soldiers like my great grandfathers and great uncle.
Only death wins in war.
Thanks for a great heartfelt reaction
I've got a great-uncle buried in the American Meuse-Argonne cemetery, killed with less than month left in the war.
As one of Sabaton's shirts says "The Great War" "What's so f***in great about it?"
Yes you right.
Not only are they on opposite sides, but there’s some thought put into how it’s done.
The ones with more German-sounding first names are on the German side.
Joakim Brodén
Pär Sundström
Hannes van Dahl
And the ones with more American/British sounding first names are on the Allied side (In this video, the Allied combatants shown are France and Great Britain; Belgium was not very prominent numbers-wise at this stage of the war, not to mention the fact that they didn’t participate in the Christmas Truce at all, to my knowledge. Russia was fighting on the Eastern front. America didn’t enter the war at all until 1917.).
Tommy Johansson is wearing a French Uniform
Chris Rörland is wearing a British uniform
Memorial cross is in Ploegsteert, known for its war monuments like the international cemetaries (about a dozen, maybe some more) and a war museum. It is located about a mile of the French border and was the location where the most heavy fighting took place.
Thanks for quoting me... LOL (on Just Jen's reaction video and I commented on Argantyr)
@@mariogansbeke Yes, I took it up there, though I wasn't born or never lived there. Thank you for excellent summary about the history and presence of this memorial!
@@MustaLaatta Yeah no problem, it's nice to know someone is reading my comments, LOL. 🤘🤘
I've seen a lot of reactions to Sabaton's Christmas Truce video and It amazes me how few reactors recognize Floor's voice at the end, there were only 3 or 4, I believe, Tank was one of the first I saw and Just Jen. Even reactors that 'worship' Floor didn't hear it. I saw the video when they released it a few weeks ago and only one second into the end credits I knew it was Floor singing. That voice is so distinctive and unique....
You was faster than me, I was like....wait I know this voice...let me listen carefully...yeah it's Floor 🤘😅
To be honest it wasn't totally unexpected, she did a instrumental version in the previous album too.
As it's present only in the video and not in the single version, I suppose they will release the Floor whole song as a bonus track this time too.
same
This song and the video is full of emotions. I thought wihile listening it is a great song but at the ending the vocal by Floor Jansen gave me real chills.
One of my favourite songs by Sabaton.
Greetings from Germany
Great reaction Tom - it is so nice to see you react to the layers of the messages Sabaton gives us in their music and videos. Many reactors never see those - great stuff!!
It happened and beautifully presented by Sabaton as always 😃🎸🎸
Tom, jump to 19:00 and immediately hit pause, then look in the middle of the screen at the credits. You might see a familiar name.
TOM is a bit slow ..doubt he would ever have figured it out ...lol
True, I am getting close to your age...atleast in 50 more years ;)
This is why the bards of Sabaton are here... to tell you the stories you were not told in school.
This was a different time, would not happen today. Great song. I will also say like a few others, you have been missed. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺
Tack från Sweden 🌟
Totally agree, a very thought provoking story & a brilliant music score to go with it...would have been very interesting
to have Sarah's reaction as well....take care..
Thanks for not muting Floor´s outstanding Outro-vocals.
I write the same comment. Is the outro he he goes out. In my opinion, Floors angelic voice, make it to Masterpiece.
Sabaton has another great story about humanity in the war.... please, please, please react to NO BULLET FLY animated version, I know you will love it.
This definitely makes me proud to be British ❤
what I like about the video is there is a defiance in it, its like the song is a big FU to fate and the people that put them there, especially the way the piano is being played
Great reaction!🤘 Sabaton keep on blowing our minds, again and again! I just love this band!
You mentioned that you like Christmas... ? The guitar player, Tommy Johansson, (playing the solo in this video) is also lead singer in another band, Majestica. They released a Christmas album last year, called "A Christmas Carol". It's totally based on that tale by C. Dickens. I highly recommend you to check out some of those videos. I'd suggest "Ghost of Christmas past" (official lyric video. And it's not just a lyric video... 😉), "Ghost of Marley" (official music video) and "Joy of Christmas" (official music video ). Also check out their new bonus track to that album, released just a month ago, "Glory of Christmas".
Did you honestly miss that it was Floor who sang those last hymn parts in the end? She's even credited there.
If you look your own vid timestamp 19.02 ending credit vocals Floor Jansen.
Great reaction and insight.
That was a time when a Semblance of integrity still existed
Great reaction to this powerful song.
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
They have an live and acoustic version of this
Sabaton - Christmas Truce / musikhjälpen 2021
Great reaction as usual! Lets continue to believe in humanity ❤️
yes a moment of humanity
Great reaction 🇸🇪 If you like christmas metal, Sabatons guitarist Tommy Johansson has his own band, Majestica. They made a christmas metal album called A christmas carol. Made from the book by Charles Dickens by the same name. Its such a great album, been playing it the whole year since it got released a year ago 😀 And Tommys vocals, man he got some serious pipes
❤ thank you for every word
Someone else mentioned Majestica's "A Christmas Carol" album, which is a concept album based on well.. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. And while a couple of the tracks that have music videos and such would make for a good video. I'd still heavily recommend just sitting down and listening to each of the tracks in order with the lyrics to hand, in your own time. Just follow the story.
And to your point about history education, I am of the opinion that the way that history is taught in most places of the world is just.. wrong. As someone who has found a very deep interest in more modern history, it's all too much about names, places, dates, etc. That you have to try and learn for a test in a week before you forget it for the rest of your life.
Whereas if you teach people (especially younger people who are still in school) about a certain event in history, like for example the Christmas Truce of 1914, you can branch that out into different things related to that. How was Christmas celebrated 100 years ago? Differences between the opposing sides? I believe that at that time, some of the Indian Expeditionary Force had arrived as well.
A story is almost always more engaging than just names and numbers where if you get one of them wrong, you automatically fail.
Anyway, just some ranting, rambling thoughts ;D
This is a really cool song...it's not a typical Sabaton song. To be honest, their songs were starting to sound a bit "samey" so I haven't been listening to them much. I hadn't heard this one before, so thanks for uploading it. A good song with a great story behind it. One thing about Sabaton that I really appreciate is the quality of their videos...spectacular stuff visually. Cheers!
Floorgasm shes gives me chills sabaton is my favorite
I give Tom some credit some people stopped it when the credit started and trust me if Tom knew it was floor singing, He would have been quiet lol
100% without a doubt. Atleast I have 1 person on my side haha
THIS is the real Christmas Spirit
A friend of mine was a soldier in the Wehrmacht in WWII. He wasn't a Nazi, in fact he spent time in work camp for resistance to nazis, but in the end even he was drafted.
He was stationed at a new place when suddenly in came several Americans with wine and guitar. Everyone was incredibly surprised, but it turned out that the former German troop had befriended the Americans when they were stationed there. No one wanted to fight the other, so instead they met up to trade pictures of family, play card and teach each other songs.
Sad to say, my friends officer was one who went by the book and the Americans became prisoners of war. My friend survived the war, spent two year in US concentration camp and then became a pacifist, dedicating his free time to the peace movement where I met him.
He's dead now. Still miss him.
Great reaction.
I know its not heavy metal but Paul McCartney back in the 80's with his band Wings did a Christmas song called The Pipes of Peace based on the same part in history. It played here in the UK every Christmas. Check out the video
Yes this hits hard with known faces, not being anonymous makes a difference too.
You heard that female voice at the end,
Hannes van Dahls wife...
Watch the credits after the band members names,
to see it spelt out...
Definitely not a commercial Christmas song,
it was released early November, possibly for Rememberance Day, this is Sabaton, respect.
The fact is that after the Christmas Truce their morale was absolutely fucked. It was hard to kill someone after you've gotten to know them.
Steven Spielberg will be VERY envious! He missed an Oscar nomination...
my fameliy fight with the germans in this war but they was force to do it so this song giv me chills
If you like those nice stories from Sabaton, you HAVE TO react to Sabaton -No bullets Fly - Animated Story Video. You WILL LOVE IT!
We need a really exceptionally talented Soprano to sing at the end of the song during the credits. Does anyone know who we can get?
Hannes ( The Drummer ) Yes I am married to her, but she is going to be very expensive. LOL.
As you probably Know Hannes is married to Floor Jansen of Nightwish. The Goddess herself.
😁
hi my grandpa was a german soldier at ww2 . he was captured by the allies (USA). The first thing he noticed was an american soldier in a sherman tank . The american soldier gave him his hand and asked him if he wants a chewing gum :) . merry christmas to all . sry 4 my bad english im not a native speaker . and btw god bless u all .
Hello Tom, great Reaction.
You did a good analysis of the picture in the beginning with dead bodies in the snow. 😢
In a war situation we dont know anything about the enemy more than that they are the enemy and must be killed and defeated. But one thing is for sure, they also have friends and families, parents, wife and kids who loves them and wants them home safe as much as your own family does.
Sabaton are masters of storytelling and genius musicians.
Another great Sabaton song is called The Final Solution, and Im sure you have an idea what the title is refering to..
If you wanna try it, make sure you pick the official animated video with lyrics. And I can asure you one thing. you will be touched cause that song also hits different.
Yeah this going on my short christmas songs list together with Valhalleluja :)
dang i love your reviews! havent u said u were serving? This would be a perfect one for you and your wive... ;)
don't worry that you missed floor. some people are mean. i love floor too but i didn;t yell at everyone miss the end. you can hear it again on your own it's amazing
There is a film about this Event i think its called christmas truce too the Film is really good
This truce wasn't authorized by the military command on both sides but was a spontaneous act where the German soldiers took the initiative. After the truce many soldiers on both sides refused go back fighting and some were even executed for not obeying orders.
The British Queen was the aunt of the German Emperor and there is no traditional enmity between the English and the Germans (the Anglo-Saxons were also German). Therefore it was possible to agree a ceasefire in advance to get the dead comrades off the battlefield. The spontaneous stopping of the fights is therefore not as crazy as it sounds.
The situation between the Germans and the French was different. For centuries people had argued about the course of the common border and were deeply enemies. Millions died to defend the border from one another. There was no fraternization there. It took another war and the forerunners of the EU for the border to become meaningless. Today the Germans and French no longer understand why people shot at each other.
The relationship between Russia and Germany is special. Most of the time they didn't have a common border. Both sides also know that the other is too strong to conquer him. So they fought in the area between them. The peoples who live there hate both sides for it.
Kaiser wilhelm, george v, and tsar nicholas were all cousins
ask Wiki....the Cross they portrayed in the video, is still there...next to a flanders field
Great Reaction aside from talking over Floor, for more on this topic there is a decent movie (2005) "Joyeux Noel" (Merry Christmas) shows the German, French & British (well a Scottish unit) , sadly when word of these events got out many units were punished and relocated to other sections of the line were the fighting was more savage. and then they made sure on holidays they would launch attacks and such. but the war took a turn and got more deadly esp once GAS started to be used in 1915 some soldier tried to repeat the event of 1914 but were shot .
The key to this magnificent event was that at the time still was something that we still only approach by now, after more than a hundred years and that is the idea that though the men where enemies in what was already the greatest war so far in history with empires clashing all across the worl they where still socialized and *knew* they where part of something that should be understood as "European Culture" - there still was a level of social compability and mutual understanding of being, while enemies, still part of a (hugely priviledged... until this suicidal act) cultural class that had ruled the world for the last 200 years...
It was a great and glorious momment in European history in the midst of this grand European suicide...
Best regards
Raoul G. Kunz

This video shows that common people (the soldiers) during that time are better than governments (politicians). We The People can put aside our differences for the better good rather than bureaucrats fighting over an agenda. I wish We The People could learn that lesson today.
Please consider doing Sabaton's "No Bullets Fly" - the YarnHub animated version - it's about 9 min with videos (history) attached. Also "Night Witches" same ...
They're not videos are more of a mini movie
even if people can't/won't see the parallels nowadays - let's hope it'll NEVER come to atrocities like that of the 1. and 2. WW EVER AGAIN! Peace - Love - Understanding, that i wish upon every last one of the human race!

Hello mr.
If you like to watch Sabaton live performamces you MUST see and react to the live version of Swedish Pagans from Wacken Open Air in 2019, where the lovely lady Tina Guo plays the cello.
Tom , Tom , Tom you spoke over the Valkyrie Goddess ...and for that you will not " ENTER VALHALLA "

So you should listen (and watch to) the animated Video of 'No Bullets Fly'....
Good reaction......Of you like Christmas do

It's the age old tragedy of greed of higher ups. They command and the normal man have to fight and die in useless wars.
Talking about Floor, we are all waiting for The Poet and the Pendulum Tom.
Hey @Tom Can you not imagine this happening in the US Civil War? I can. It's cold as F, the ppl on the other side are culturally just like you, it's the most important day of the year due to religion and they all share it. No one wins or loses, it's just a brute force attack over and over with bodies.
Лишь минута в Войне....
From this song you can see very clearly which reactor really appreciates and knows Floor Jansen. That's not many. All that remains are those who really listen and immediately after the first second realize that Floor is singing here. The voice is simply unique.
I always say a video ends when a video ends. The credits, if available, are part of it and must be respected. Especially the people who build their content on it. If there are credits then people should be named who have put work into it and musicians also make it interesting and beautiful through their music, which belongs to the video.
When I see the reactor credits cut or quietly make and talk over it... 😡
Then I always get the impression they say the song is so great and blablabla, but can't wait to finish the video.
I think the main reason why they have the band members on different sides (besides it's more interesting cinematically) is so they don't pick sides with either party.
They have stated earlier they normally never dress up as soldiers because of this and it would make their music "opinionated" for some people.
How did they get a piano to the front line 🙂
Could u react to sabaton art of war?
I wonder how Sabaton got Floor to sing outro?☺
Easy, just by asking would she be intrested & she was :)
hannes the drummer of sabaton is also the husband of beautyful floor jansen, by the way....greetings and love from germany
When Hannes isn't hitting the drums on a regular basis he's hitting the Floor on regular basis

That on/off switch is a thing for professional soldiers. You learn how to switch it off, and at that point you just teach the raw recruits to do the same. War is off today. Maybe he did shoot your buddy, who was also MY friend. Doesn't matter today. We're taking today off. Show me you can be a gentleman, boy. Just for a day.
Can you maybe check out Blind Channel new song"We are no saints"? 🔥
I wouldn’t have been first outta the trench. Nope. No way in hell. I bet the piano regrets leaving the trench. RIP Wagner piano, we hardly knew ye…

A lot of reactors say "we are learning history", "Sabaton teaches history". While I understand the sentiment, I must say that these statements are false. With Sabaton we see and hear an artistic vision of historical events (which is cool, don't get me wrong). History however is not just the description of events. History assembles and analyzes sources (written, archeological, etc.) to figure out what has happened, cause and effect relationships between established events, and a lot of other boring stuff. For History "why?" is as important as "what?".
My point is don't fool yourself by saying "I learn history by listening to Sabaton", because you don't :)
Tom , you missed Floor Jansen, she did the end of the video :D
Talking while Floor is singing is like spitting on the Mona Lisa!
Germanic brothers who were treated as pieces on a chess board by the people higher up to further their agenda.
We should have learned by now, not to die for a cause that is of no use for us common people.
"No more brother wars!"
Enough!
