Don't feel ashamed to get emotional by this song, everybody does. As a Swede, I cried like a baby first time i saw this video. Next, Carolus Rex from the same consert
I'm half Swedish. Both my mother's parents were one or two generations removed from Sweden. I started learning Swedish about 12 years ago but life happened, so I know only the very basics. Like toddler level Swedish😂
Anyway, when I found Sabaton about 3 years ago, I dove head first into their music. When I looked up the lyrics to this song, it really hit me hard. Musically the English and Swedish versions are exactly the same but, the English version doesn't even come close. Let alone the live version in front of fellow countrymen.
And after Carolus Rex, you have to listen on Konungens Likfärd (with translation on)
I am Indonesian, and i cry to this song as well
As a norwegian I also cried. Cried that I realized that I could have watched them live years ago but missed out.
@@joshuaswanson1977 Keep working =)
This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life.
The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it.
This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it
This song usually makes veterans cry, because in a way it is a song about every nameless soldier fallen for someone elses cause or pointless war, and that strikes close to home.
So glad you reacted to this, as you know by now Sabaton has this way of evoking patriotic feelings for any country they sing about, it inspires pride and patriotism and they don't discriminate. One song it's the Germans, the next the Polish, Americans or Russians.
What makes this one so special is that it's a Swedish band, singing about Swedish history, In Sweden and it just gets you right in the soul, especially since the lyrics about a soldier in the 30-year war can be related to anyone who has been or know anyone who has been at war.
This song is just something else and this version from Gothenburg, Sweden is just incredible. You have to show this to Sara later, I am sure she will enjoy it, especially with the lyrical content. Keep em coming!! Backseat having a blast following your journey.
would like to Sara's reaction to this 1
#sabatonEffect
As a swede, I can tell you that these sort of semi-patrotic, historical, reflections on Sweden are super rare. That's why Carolus rex is very special to me. There simply is nothing like it in Sweden.
I feel a bit weird sometimes when people feel pride or patriotism about this song. For me it is the opposite. It is the story of the 30 year war fought for plunder and conquest in the name of religion. More and more men were sent to be canon fodder. At the end, 20% of the army had to be replaced each year because of deaths, diseases, wounds.
Young people were conscripted, kidnapped by force to fight a war in another country they knew nothing of. With lack of modern logistics, they had to survive on plundering food from the natives. No heroes in that war.
Back at home, the disappearance of manpower caused poverty and famine which took 200 years to recover from. Church bells were melted down to finance the war. No one had the time to mourn those sent to fight as they were themselves struggling to survive with the kings taxmen demanding more and more.
The English version of the song gives the background of the war, calling it an insanity and criminal. That is the context needed to understand the situation the young soldier is placed in in this Swedish version. It is certainly no song for patriotism. More like an anti-war song.
This song makes me cry EVERY time. One of the most powerful war songs I've ever heard. So much truth and honesty...almost too much...💔
Great reaction, Tom. Have a wonderful day...💛
EDIT: Actually, I'm going to take back the term "war song". It's really an ANTI-war song if I ever heard one. Too bad somebody in America never came up with this. But sung in Swedish by Sabaton....who could possibly ask for more...😢🌹...
Yes I consider it a war song. But not for battle, it’s a war song about the sadness of it.
Now thats what i call a reaction!! I got tears in my eyes because you was fighting to keep them away!!
Cant stress how difficult it was, but damn what an amazing performance
When its on swedish it realy hits hard. You need to see the engliah version, its better than translated
There is an english version of this, but the lyrics is from another point of view.
When they ask the audience which version they should do, it's (from what I've seen) always the Swedish version.
It doesn't matter where they are, in Japan, Hungary, Canada or the US ... I don't think there are subtitles during the live show :) and still....
Happy you liked it. I didn't even know you where in the military when I requested the song, I see how that would make a already emotional song even more so. This song usually end up with a singing crowd when sung in Sweden but this is probably the greatest yet that I have seen. Part of why, might be that before the song Jocke (the singer) asked everyone to rise their phones with the light on and then said they where going to have a crowd competition between Gothenburg and Stockholm that where the concert the next day. I guess we didn't want to lose to "big brother" Stockholm :). Last concert I saw before shutdown, about 15 months now. Damn I miss concerts...
Yea, that one certainly hits home pretty hard. The best thing about this band is that they are sure to bring people back to the realities of war after pointing out courageous and daring acts.
I was at this show (sitting somewhere in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) It was an awesome night, sadly this was just before covid broke out and started canceling shows (had for once gotten tickets for 5 shows and 1 festival that year) Just before this clip started Joakim asked everyone to hole up their cellphones since no one carries around lighters anymore. They had sold out the arena that night so there were over 10766 people there (going by statistics from newspapers the day after the show) as for the subs, it's kind of hit and miss on some of the parts.
Such a great song. I tear up every time I see this. Although it is about the Swedish forces during the 100 year war, it speaks to all who go in service to their country.
About 11.000 in the crowd, it's normally an Ice Hockey Arena. Before they started the song Joakim said "People these days doesn't have cigarette lighters anymore, but you all have mobil phones so could you please turn on the Torch and hold it up towards the stage...". Cheers / B.
Night witches - The great tour / Live from Leipzig. You will love it 🤘
i can only imagine what the guys felt when the crowd were singing, and Joakim bowing to the crowd as they sing just shows how much the band respect their fans
The proper translation should be: Because the war, can destroy a man. Stil an awesome song! Keep it up!
Totally agree.
I mean lets directly translate the words in their syntax.
För =because
Kriget= the war (but lets not use "the" for the proper english translation. It sounds unnatural in english the same way using plural "krig" would sound unnatural in swedish)
det = it
kan =can
förgöra =destroy
en man=a man
Because war, it can destroy a man.
Translation in the video = "because of the war, destroy a man". It makes me think they might have been high when doing it.
No. "Because (the) war (,it) can, destroy a man". It even rhymes in English then.
If you think that's the worst part of the translated lyrics, you're wrong. I don't know the process for getting the subtitles updated, but Sabaton should pay someone to do it properly. The translation is horrendously bad. I think the worst part is "Men se meg så her; en make, en venn." I imagine most native english speakers struggle to understand the translation for it.
Fields of Verdun is also a very powerful and emotional song from this great band
The song is about the 30 years war, (Sweden was involved in it). Gotenburg is a Swedish city, so it was emotional song and well known (and in Swedish) by most a the people present. That made the performance so special.
Sweden pretty much was the 30 year war 🤟🇸🇪
who were they at war with?
Keep listening to Sabaton, studio version and live - both a incredible as far as brining out emotion to the songs.
Not enough credit is given to Joakim for the way he ends the song. Those vocals are so powerful.
Sabaton has some slower and sadder songs. One of my favourites is Price of a Mile. Liked your reaction
Today in Sweden was Veterans Day. And stumble on to this reaction after seeing the Air force flew with JAS39 Gripen over Gothenburg earlier to day, and hearing the king speak, it hits pretty hard. Länge leve konungariket Sverige!
Such a powerful song. It always makes me tear up. Thanks for the reaction.
I love that they didn't just strip away guitars, bass and vocals when the crowd took over, but also the pyro. It gives the song the "naked" feeling that it deserves.
Damn, the futility of war, this song hits me hard in the feels every frikken time 🤘🇬🇧
What a wonderful reaction! Thank you so much! If you want more Sabaton songs to react to, the whole Carolus Rex Album is a a source to scoop from. My favorite is Karolinens bön (or Caroleans Prayer in english). /Micke P
Thank you for your service! It was about 11000 people at the concert and im happy to say, Sabaton is touring again as of today
The Scandinavium has a capacity of 14000 for concerts. Considering its Sabaton in Sweden, I'm gonna bet it was sold out if not damn close.
Sabaton is an super badass liveband, all of the songs from their last tour the great tour is great!! Just watch and enjoy 🤘🤘🤘🇸🇪🇸🇪🎸 great reaction once again 👌... and you know they are from Sweden so This one is in Swedish😁
Wow, awesome reaction, thanks. I was at the show..and yes, we were loud! \m/. Ive been to a few Sabaton gigs and this is always the one I wait for..besides Carolus Rex, Both songs cover the 30-year war.
I noticed you perhaps want more of the audience singing sort and a video popped into my head:
Blind Guardian - The Bard's Song & Valhalla - Live at Wacken Open Air 2016
There are some 40-50 seconds at the beginning of talking German with no subtitles that I could find, but then you have a beautiful piece of the first song: The Bard's Song
What can I say, A Wacken crowd is an AMAZING crowd.
To be honest, I look at this video over and over again, I just love your reacton☺️
I can feel you , I have goosebumps every time 🥰
I have seen sabaton before, and I am going to see them in Stockholm, Sweden 5 mars , I already baught the tickets 🙌
Wow, thank you! This song just moves me each time I listen to it. I can't wait to see them Live someday, hopefully!

Fantastic reaction. You becoming emotional is what sets it apart. I myself shed a tear every time.
So happy that U finally came to this song. I was there on the left and I can tell U that this brought me to tears, laughing, clapping and singing. So emotional.
If this song doesnt get you, your heart must be made of ice
Gothenburg is my hometown, west coast Sweden, cheers
so need to start reacting to the Sabaton History Channel (Deff checkout "No Bullets Fly" animated video) also for a gut punch watch the Sabaton History "The Final Solution" then the music video for it
Yeah i agree Tom needs to react to Sabaton - No Bullets Fly (animated video) especially since he have a background in the airforce
I don't know if there is a good quality version of it, but the acoustic version of Final Solution is way better than the metal version. I've only heard it live at their show tho.
I am going to Stockholm Sweden 28/4 , and I really hope they play this song 💞🤩
Great reaction and I am from UK. Got tickets for next year and the Hu supporting Omg 😲
With your background in the airforce. You need to react Sabaton - No Bullets Fly (animated story video) version. Be sure it is that version. You're gonna love that song
the drummer fromsabaton is the men , from floor jansen
This song is so good at shining a spotlight on any every single soldier. No matter what you call home.
You should have Sarah join you and react to the English version of this song. It’s awesome, moving, and beautiful as well. Sabaton is amazing. And please don’t forget about reacting to their songs “Night Witches” and “No Bullets Fly” ... the complete animated story versions by Yardhub. Soooo good. Amazing songs and stories. 👍🏻
I just found your channel and I like what I have seen so far. Thank you for postning!
thank you very much. great reaction!!!!
AWESOME REACTION !👌 WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST! 🍀
Love youre reactions. and thank you for your servivece. Youu are one of the brave ones
So I know this video was posted a year ago - but since you asked how many are there in that arena - that's Ullevi in Gothemburg sweden, that concert was sold out, and Ullevi holds 43'000
I can't help but choke up to this one. I really loved how much you loved it.
I’ve had the pleasure to se Sabaton live a couple of times and it’s always amazing
Very cool song. Sabaton has another great one called Ballad of Bull. You should take a listen
Very from the ❤️reaction, Tom.👍👍👍 Don’t know so much about Sabaton myself so I will join on your journey finding out more.👋👋👋
Tom, listen.... This song is for everyone that has served or are serving. No matter what country you liv in.
Yes they say Sweden because that's were Gothenburg is. And Sabaton are from Sweden. But that country could be swapped to US if you want (not that they do that but anyway).
The song is for you!
Much love
I second this, I am a US Army vet, and this song about made me cry thinking about how I felt leaving for my first deployment.... I was scared to death and this song put a lot of thoughts I had to words....
Swapped to US, well not realy, the song is about the 30 year war, the US dident exist back then but otherwise I agree
Well lets be fair now. Sweden was a big player in the 30 years war and this song in swedish is from a swedish soldiers perspective so thats why they say its about sweden.
Something even "cooler" you americans have forgotten to realize is that this war happened long before america was a country. Therefore many of your ancestors were probably also involved in this war just as much as any other european of the time.
Who knows, they mgiht have even left to the colonies exactly because of this war.
In conclusion, you are a part of it, every one of you with european ancestry.
SABATON ALWAYS AMAZING 🔥💥🤘 I LOVE IT💫
I cried with you brave guy. Thx for your Services for your country
They have an english version of the song. The lyrics are different, but it's still very emotional. "A Lifetime of War".
Great reaction ♥️
From Gothenburg Sweden 😮👍🙂
I love this song, and it's a million times more emotional when you understand the Swedish. The English subtitles on this video do an OK job of showing what the song is about, but the Swedish is just beautiful. :)
If we needed a second national anthem 🇸🇪! Everyone there know it by heart including myself ❤ Saw them a year ago in Stockholm and still haven't recovered 🤟
I am here because of Floor Jansen. I had no idea her husbands band was so wonderfully awesome. I love that they are singing this in Swedish. No wonder my kids(30's) like them and told me I wouldn't like them. Sorry my dears they are really good.
΄΄ I give my life for my homeland΄΄.This lyric is all the song...Every person on this planet that respect himself, fight for his homeland...NATIONALISM till the end of this world, till the Sun will freeze...Greetings from Golden Dawn-Hellas!
One thing I am proud of, as a Swedish woman, is that our country consisted of free farmers who actually had the power to select or neglect their king.
A Swedish man was never forced to go to war. He went of his own free will. I love my people, and especially our men. They are amazing!
Sad to say that there are not that many left.
I got emotional that was so powerful
10/10 reaction
If you want to continue on the Sabaton emotional path - then watch the animated story video No Bullets Fly - I'm not crying either *sniff*
You are in good company, this video has that effect on people, haven't kept up with you and what songs you have been through with Sabaton, but you being from US try Devil dogs and 82nd all the way :)
They have This song in english aswell 👊🏼
Indeed. And it's underrated, because the lyrics are somewhat different but in their own way not less powerful!
There was som 12500 in the crowd; I'm the one with the cellphone lit up
I'm jealous bro)
This should be our national hymn
Joakim conducting a choir of thousands...
if you found this hard you'll be bawling your eyes out if you listen to Diana Ankudinova you survived soldier, you will need the subtitles on as it's in Russian.
This song comes from carolus Rex album that came out in both swedisch and English so next song from this album do a dubbel reaction 1 song in both Swedich and English.🤘🤘👍
That was actually the best pronounciation attempt of the song title that i have heard by an english speaker. Well done
Also, whenever you listen to a song from Sabaton you Will get a history lesson (regardless of if you were taught about the events in school or not), which is quite unique for bands in general out there.
10,766 paying visitors (That is max for this arena). Gothenburg, home of VOLVO, Ericson, SKF and much more...
the best part is that this is a song about Sweden, performed by a Swedish band, to Swedish people
♥
50 000 was at that concert!
I have heard both the Swedish and English lyrics to this song, but when you know Swedish this song hits even harder. Somehow I just find the words much more personal and emotional in Swedish. But it could also be because it is my home.
It's so damn good I get emotional every time I hear it and I can listen to it on repeat for hours.
Best damn song they've made up until now, in my opinion.
Like when he sings about going to war with his kinsmen from his village when he is barely even a man yet. Literally his own personal family and friends and many of them (Husbands, friends, fathers and sons) will never come home.
You definitely have to react to "No bullets fly" and "Night witches" (the animated story video in both cases) ... those should give you a lot of goose bumbs as well!
that is up there with Dire Straits Brothers in Arms, this one has me blubbering, just a magic band crowd being one
You should check out their song “To hell and back”. It’s about Audie Murphy and PTSD.
I think this is one of the reasons Sweden hasent been in a "war" in 200 years. Poltava and so on left a deep scar in the Swedish soul....
scandinavium is the name of the arena its my home town i think it was 16000 people
i said in chat, this song is powerfull...Do you want see brazilian crowd?...Queen "Love my life" live in Rock um Rio 1985...Salute from Brazil!!
As a Swedish person. i feel so connected. We been in so many wars in are country we only want peace
👍🔥
You should do 40:1 at the Polish Woodstock: it ended with approx 700.000 Polish attendees singing their national anthem.
From here (En Livstid i krig, A Lifetime of War) you go to Carolus Rex (the lyrics video). 👍👍
Blind Guardian - Bard's Song and Valhalla live in Wacken please please please
Great, no I mean really great, reaction.
Not sure how big but I think Sabaton concerts host in the hundreds sometimes thousands but I’m not sure.
As a Swede thats in the armed forces this song just hits so hard
A life time at war
There is an english version of this awesome song, a lifetime of war :)
I disagree with whomever told you to stick to music videos. Sabaton is one of the best live bands out there.
I say it depends on the song. No Bullets Fly, Night Witches (the animated story videos) and Bismarck (the music video) are three that I would suggest the video over the live, or possibly doing a dual-reaction to the video and the live. But for anything else, if there's a live, go for the live.
@@MsCatstaff I agree for “No Bullets Fly” and “Bismarck,” but the live video of “Night Witches” from Leipzig is one of my favorites from TGT.
Agreed!🤘MsCatstaff has a point. A dual reaction is a great idea. 👍😉
No Bullets fly, Bismark, Night Witches, Price of a mile...
You need to listen to Blind Guardian performing at Wacken the Bard Song and Valhalla the same thing happened there
This song was my favourite on the Carolus Rex album when it came out. I attended my first Sabaton concert in Stockholm just after that album was released and I will never forget it. When they played this song, the whole audience sang along to every word in the whole song and Joakim just went quiet and listened to us sing. It was a magical moment that I will cherish for the rest of my life. So seeing the way this song spoke to you on an emotional level brought me right back to that moment. It was such an amazing thing to see.
P.S... How long were you in the dog house for doing this reaction without your wife? :P Had to ask.
Of course it is an emotional and absolutely wonderful song. I cry and get goosebumps every time I listen to this one. Wants it to be our (is Swedish) new national anthem. Can't you make a video while listening to their new song Defense of Moscow? It's about Russia. So heavenly good song.
I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to fight
And the world burned
For war it can
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
But who will mourn me?
So see me as
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
But who will miss me?
Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time
Far from home
Baptized and die in battle
And the world burned
For war it can
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
But who will mourn me?
So see me as
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
But who will miss me?
And when my time runs out
Who cares then?
They fight on
Does a soldier get a worthy end?
To fall asleep
Pass away
And never wake up
For war it can
Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland
But who will mourn me?
So see me as
A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes home
But who will miss me?

Your swedish is awesome 😀
