  • Looking for a solution to grow more fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers in a small space? The answer is to grow up, not out. In this video I’ll share why you should reconsider using pots and containers if you're growing with little or no land but want to maximize your growing space and garden production. I’ll share the results of what I’ve been able to do with 2 vertical Green Stalk planters that only take up 2 square feet on a balcony or patio. Switching to vertical gardening this past summer was undoubtedly the best decision and has been a solution to a number of walls I was hitting as a small space gardener. Transitioning from a garden that was 100% made from containers, I’ll share why I’ll be moving away from them. So, if you’re on the fence (or just curious) I’ve got 6 ideas for you to consider.

*I agree that growing 'Vertically' is more advantageous to **_small spaces._* But, the Green Stalk IS technically a COLLECTION OF CONTAINERS stacked on top of one another. It is more CORRECT, in my opinion, to call it _Vertical Container Gardening!_ As opposed to REGULAR container gardening or FLOOR container gardening.
There are also some things you would still need a POT or bag for like... POTATOES. Planting the wrong thing in the wrong pocket can still potentially SHADE OUT other plants. And there are certain veggies that should not be grown in the same dirt as other veggies.
Feeding a family with children would call for more investment and space if your goal is to at least bring down your grocery bill. Some people don't have a backyard patio, they have an Apartment _Landing or Balcony_ and could not get away with having such a NOTICEABLE object.
You always have to know all the pros & cons and then pick what is best for you and your family & your situation.
      Just grow something, somehow!

I’ve read that fertilizing isn’t advisable until at least the third set of true leaves are well established (and I learned the hard way you also have to be sure to dilute the fish emulsifier wayyyy down for seedlings 😁😂). Snaps and foxglove take forever to get going, so I’d say just hang in there. Everything looks great!

Stick it right in the soil and train the ends of your plant between the poles and jute. I have container cukes this year and am praying it works.

I have a couple I haven't unboxed yet- I know, I should be ashamed of myself. I just wasnt convinced I could grow everything. If you could do some more videos that go into a bit more depth about growing various things, that would be super helpful. For example, when growing tomatoes, do you need to grow with a smaller variety like cherry tomatoes? Do you need a determinate variety?? Anyway, nicely done video, I'm subscribed!

In purchasing three of these towers I have both the Mover base with wheels and two of the Spinner base with wheels. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Spinner base with wheels because I can literally turn the tower with three fingers easily!! Turning the Mover base, although it is not difficult, it does require both hands and more effort. After three weeks of this comparison, I purchased another Spinner base with wheels and will be placing one of my larger pots on the Mover. That particular plant will not require turning. The company runs sales routinely so it’s easy to plan your purchase. Lovely to see you again!

And.. I did not have any pest issues in my greenstalk. Setting up 2nd one for fall... will probably add a 3rd by Spring!

Hello Ms. BK! always good to see you! I sure wish I would've jumped on vertical growing faster, and now that I am, wow I really enjoyed increased production and efficiency unbeatable compared to what I had growing in containers. I'm right there with you on a third for spring (and then I'm telling myself I'll stop...we'll see how that goes!). Continue to take good care, friend!

I agree with you that vertical gardening is the way to go if you dont have large space. How can one get these green stalk planters if you are in Kenya?

Great video! I just purchased a greenstalk during their BF sale. I have since filled the bottom 4 tiers with Dwarf snap beans and the top with kale. I'm afraid I'll regret not buying the supports as well! Fingers crossed the beans are short enough to not need support for now🤞🏾 have you grown potatoes in yours yet? I'm thinking about trying that next.

@@BecomingaFarmGirl cassandra the aerogardens are awesome and you get a lot of veggies and herbs in a small space. They are a great investment.

Loved the video. Your deck looks great. Even though I now have space Ill be trying a few of these near my kitchen for herbs and tea items, as well as interspersing them throughout my larger garden. I have dreams of a hanging garden of Babylon with vegetable and fruit/flowers and will use these to help create the look.
I didn’t realize they help with bugs outside so thats good to know, did they help reduce disease?
Im with you on the growing bags, I couldn’t recommend them, way too much watering. Have you looked into orya water pots for some of your larger containers? Those are amazing. Thanks great video!

Hey SmallTown Homestead! The description of your dream to have a hanging garden using fruit and vegetables gave me such vivid imagery! Wow--that's going to be stunningly beautiful. I really wanted grow bags to work because they support great root development but, from late June to mid August, they are water guzzlers and I still needed cages or garden pole supports for each container. I haven't thrown them away in hopes of passing them along to someone else or repurposing them. And yes, growing vertically is the best way to prevent disease because you have better air movement (better ventilation diffuses disease particles floating around in the air) aren't fighting as many soil borne diseases because less soil is exposed in your planer, and have virtually no ground walking pests bringing in external variables! It's the healthiest my garden has ever been and, since I make my own fertilizers, I noticed that despite growing the most I ever have this year, I used fewer applications of worm castings, none of my tomatoes, peppers or eggplant had blossom end rot (although I did feed them tons of calcium and it was a dryer season than last). I am only familiar with orya pots from other channels I watch and I certainly could see myself exploring them in the future, but for the cost/space I don't see it as a practical solution for me right now. But, speaking of clay pots, I am interested in repurposing a few of the ones I have to make a zeer clay pot fridge to see how that system works as a long term food storage system. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi Emma! I’m in MD zone 7a-b. It’s so lovely to e-meet you! After growing in 2 green stalks this summer I’m 100% transitioning to them (a total of 4) this growing season. Are you also a small space grower? I’ll be sharing more gardening videos next month. I’m so excited it’ll be growing season again!

Oh my goodness, did I need to see this video. I just recently purchased my first Greenstalk (on Monday!) and considered canceling the order yesterday (before it ships). Your video has inspired me to NOT do that. Starting with one Original planter to see how it goes. I'm a beginner gardener so if this works well, I'll add a Leaf version next. Definitely going to Subscribe and go binge some of your content! Any recommendations for books/resources for the beginner gardener? Thanks Cassandra!

Greetings Becoming Farm Girl, I was wondering if I can use the Green Stalk indoors on my closed in sunroom, I don't have an outdoor space at all, I live in a 55 and up community, HOA doesn't allow it they're concerned about attracting wild life that could pose a danger to some of the older folks here. My sunroom is just that very sunny full of huge windows, thanks for all you do, I love your channel ❤

I have not had much success with my greenstalk. I had a very small potato harvest. Two lunchbox pepper plants that only produced 2 or 3 peppers each, and just lagged behind my other pepper plants. And lots of failed green bean plants. What did I do wrong!? How often did you fertilize?

How do you keep harmful bugs away?

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 года назад

Hi Nakisha! Good question (I had this too). Here's what I've experienced...many of the harmful bugs are the land based and so, growing vertically really reduces your exposure to the "harmful bugs"-It's also incredibly easy to use the greenstalk supports to full drap covering over your garden (for shade during the summer or to extend your growing season during cooler months). I'm also intentional about planting a variety of crops that attract and repel bugs alongside my plants. The comparison on the health between what I grow in my small raised bed to what I get in my GreenStalks is night and day!
