- See master gaffer James Mongrain and our Hot Glass Demo team explore traditional Venetian and Italian forms during Mongrain's extended stay as a guest artist in our Amphitheater Hot Shop. In this demo, Mongrain makes the decorative glass animals used later in the week in his 2300° demo. Watch the 2300° video, showing the vase with this dragon • 2300° Fire and Ice wit...
Leonardo Da Vinci would have marveled at this technique. James is a master. His pieces are priceless. This is intense work that can only be appreciated on the highest scale. This dragon design is gorgeous.
accidentally found this video, stay till the end. what show, great smithing!
I just love to watch people create. Something like this, or an animation, or editing a video...it's just really cool to me to watch the process of a creation.
I love the internet. A world of knowledge at my fingertips.
Thanks for showing me how glass is mastered!
Edited to add: The production value here is great! The sound is good, the camera work is nice, and the commentary is interesting. Awesome!
Thanks for watching!
Shame you guys didn't keep the audio from the shop and simply fade it out whenever narration was necessary.
I just like hearing the background noise of the shop while watching these videos.
+Glenn A Hi Glenn, we chose to only include the narration since we had music playing in the hot shop that has caused copyright issues on RUclips in the past. Thanks for this feedback, we're continuing to work on the best scenario for both in the hot shop and what gets posted here on RUclips and it's great to hear this feedback.
+Corning Museum of Glass Pity youtube's copyright thing is so sensitive, it makes taking videos of everyday life difficult sometimes! Thanks for the upload
+Corning Museum of Glass Suggest at least having a little initial narration, then, because I thought something was wrong with the video when it started with 2 minutes of silence.
I was wondering if the lack of sound was my tablet or the video itself, so came down to the comments to see. I agree, I wish they kept the audio.
@@TheChipmunk2008 Which is ofc ridiculous
Thank you for recording and sharing this. It's a beautiful thing to witness talent and creativity of his caliber.

I realized I watch these videos while doing stressful things (lol). Very silent backgrounds with the occasional mention of fire and "fluffy torches"...makes sense why I like this so much.
fluffy torches do seem comforting during stressful times, kinda like cuddling in a goose down comforter. Maybe a bit too warm though
I had this on while working, it is quite relaxing to listen to them working and see the process as it happens.
+Simon Dann Thanks for watching!
That strange moment when I realized I don't know how I got here after watching this for an hour lol
ikr. enjoyed the shit out of it tho
Yep lol
+kim smith 25 mins in, so glad i'm a pot head. this is very enjoyable.
get a notebook and take notes!
+kim smith I'm pretty sure it was in your recommendations.
There's probably a really good reason for why we are here. Probably advertising money and good tags i'm guessing. 3.5million views is for a reason.
Just wonderful. Thanks for showing the final artwork for all to see.

I wish I could eat molten glass. It looks so yummy.
So one says u can't it might burn tho
The leidenfrost effect could be enough of a protection it might not burn you, or at least not severely.
Ngl tho same here
You can. Try it.

The process used to make this piece has blown my little mind; especially the ridges and rings of the dragon's body. What an absolute master. There are a lot of comments about the end result; if you don't like it that's fine, but this video is about the astounding process, not just the sculpture at the end. Thank you for sharing this video, CMOG, it is truly inspiring.
Thanks for watching!
I can't believe I just spent an hour of my life, watching a man make a dragon out of glass.
I'd love a piece of craftsmanship like that. Looks amazing.
Skill, talent and teamwork. Awesome and thank you.
For the makers: Thank you very much for this video, filming in your amphitheather gave a unique opportunity for us intrigued to follow glass sculpting!
For the kids: Read/learn a little on the subject you're talking about, if you don't like being called as a simpleton.
Thank you for showing us the finished project at the end of the video. I wish other glass blowing videos would do that!!! Normally we only get to see them put into the annealing oven.

Jim and crew, what an amazing job of team work including the narrator!
Your dragon is an exquisite piece of art.
If I were allowed to criticize,---- it would only be the eyes.
Slanted or half lidded would have brought out more of the ferociousness the creature was during that time.
Okay, I don't mean to be eccentric here but this is my art.
I remember my past two deaths and return to Heaven and all the process entailed until coming back here (Earth).
My biggest regret in Heaven is not spending enough time in the public (Heavenly) ARTS.
Yes we have our own domains or Dominions but I wished I'd spent more time in the Heavenly (Public) Dominion.
You Jim and others have awaken me to pay more attention to the ARTS that so proliferate Heaven in my next time around.
THX SO much!
I'm terrified that one day they'll drop it and there'll be glass everywhere.
True pain will be felt on that day
Qy
Keep watching, I've seen a few where they have dropped the whole thing
Dude believe me they dropped hundreds of pieces
Vvvvbvbvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
honestly, the only thing that bothers me (not counting the broken bottom
from the detachment) is how i have never seen a glass dragon with the
face of a dragon, they always have bird or fishlike beaks.
Chaosium I was going for chicken face. wish they'd done more work on the wings
That's kind of my point, everyone always goes for the bird face or fish face when it comes to glass dragons, i understand how difficult it gets, and is to learn, but they always just look... silly.
also, wings looked surprisingly good IMO for how little attention they got.
I was thinking duck with that profile, tbh
That's because it's a traditional Venetian dragon design, which have, as you said, more "bird-like" features, rather than the "lizard-like" features of the traditional oriental dragons or the like.
Alex Parker Even so, there are plenty of birds that are not ducks.
Aaahhhh, visual ASMR...SO very relaxing-and the artistry is quite impressive!
Magnificent work of art, good job. Thank you for making a video.
Definitely looks like an Italian dragon. People don't realize but dragons are very different in actual real world lore (fiction) compared to fantasy.
Nordic dragons were usually wyrms or wyverns. And the old art isn't very pretty.
+Peteru Avertis the modern fantasy dragons aren't exactly made up on the spot neither...they just developed later, when dinosaur skeletons started to become more common in the peoples' minds. so you have to look at culture AND time. just a little "the more you know" for you there
I agree

nothing like watching a master at work
most aesthetically pleasing video i've seen in a while
Why did I watch this whole thing at 1am...
That's a dragon? It looks more like a seahorse with a pair of fairy wings.
Dragons come in many forms. Chinese dragons look very serpentine, like snakes with wings and moustaches... so the term "dragon" can describe a pretty wide variety of designs.
+Michael Angel This particular style of glass dragon has its beginning in styles set by designers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Artists have adapted their own variations and styles of fantastical animals and creatures, some of which have become the contemporary glassmakers' idea of the glass dragon. In short, the style of the dragon has roots in historical designs, but each artist can interpret that differently.
+Milander just milander That's fine. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But realize there is more to life than what you like, and other people can love it. The person who posted this video explained the history of glass dragon sculpture, which explains why the dragon is formed the way it is. My suggestion would be you not buy this sculpture, since you clearly don't like it.
+Laynie Fingers other people aren't artists
+Laynie Fingers I too don't like this seahorse. some are called masters due to a lack of artists in said medium.
Stunning piece of art.
Absolutely beautiful!
nobody searched for this, let's be honest
glad i came across this though!
I did.
This is actually what I searched for though. I like watching this stuff.
It's an amazing piece of work using incredible skill. Although I realise that it is in an old Italian style it still bothers me that the spines don't run all the way down the back bone. Spines on it's belly just don't look right to me. Just my own opinion. Love these video though :)
Wow, I'm in love (with the art of making things like this happening)
This is amazing and inspirational! Love it!!!!
I think glass blowing is very cool
I'd be pretty scared to accidenatlly whack that thing on the edge of the ovens hole.. :D
I read "accidentally wack" and instantly thought about him accidentally hitting someone with a glob of hot glass
It'd be fine. When glass is that hot (hot enough to be worked) it has a consistency somewhat similar to clay, but a firmer and resistant to change. The hotter it is the more malleable it is, so this comparison or simile is subject to a pretty wide range of variety. For the sake of discussion though, it's accurate enough.
Really fascinating to watch... thank you for sharing!
This is simply beautiful, its oddly soothing.
bruh that's a sea horse
Yeah with Two legs.. ??? I am corn fuse ??
@@r.l.mashburn5246 it's a sea horse with two legs

if you listen its just the mic moving/sqeaking
I did listen to it carefully n thats not the mic AT ALL!! I had TONS of friends listen to it also and they ALL said the same thing I said that he farted. PLUS listen to the dude when it happens, He trys so hard to stop from laughing while hes talking. Ur not gonna do that cuz of a noise ur mic makes lol Listen to it again carefully man, ull hear wat I mean. Hell the dude was trying not to laugh at his own self for farting so loud that a mic picked it up n everyone heard lol

So happy that "ViviOvo D'Oro" by Jack Storms brought Me here.
The beauty created by these artists is mesmerizing. :-)
This is absolutely amazing
thats a crazy $15000 profit for 50 minutes of work
+geekaboo14 , I think that price is for the finished product, container and lid, so more time than that
He probably doesn't do it for the money but because it's his passion
after 30 years of experience*
Make your own then.
It took 30 years to get that good, the cost mentioned was for a full goblet, lid, and topper, and those would take a lot longer to make than the fifty minutes for the topper. That's also only the gross cost. The materials (Glass, oven, tools, kiln, brace, rod, etc.) would seriously reduce that gross cost. All in all, that's a relatively fair price for this sort of work.
This dragon makes me sad...
Neat to watch the process, but the dragon makes me sad.
Those spines...so....wrong.
+Melissa King It's a drag huh ?
It looks like a chicken. Also its wings are way too small to support its body. That bother me the most

This is amazing!!!! Does the glass ever get over heated or is it possible for glass to be burnt?
Great question. Here's the answer from our Chief Scientist Glen Cook:
Burning is, by definition, a chemical reaction where a fuel combines with oxygen, changing it into new, “burnt” stuff, and in the processes gives off enough heat to keep the burning happening.
Wood or paper or other things that were alive will burn, with the oxygen from the air turning, say, the wood into carbon-rich ash, as well as carbon dioxide gas and water vapor.
Metals can burn, like magnesium in fireworks, giving off intense heat and white light, as it turns into a chemical called magnesium oxide.
But glass is made of chemical compounds that already include a lot of oxygen: silicon dioxide, sodium oxide, and calcium oxide, for example. In a sense, glass is already “burned” - at some time in the distant past, perhaps even before our solar system formed, the silicon or sodium or calcium combined with oxygen in the heat of an exploding star!
So the additional heat we use to melt the glass, enough that masters like Jim Mongrain can turn it into beautiful things, only makes it move and flow. It doesn’t, and can’t burn it, any more than it already is.
Corning Museum of Glass Thank you so much ! :D
Glass is sand. No joke, I am not trolling.

+Leonardo The Mage i wish
Yeah same
+abnormality16 Me TOO! It's sooo pretty.
+Kitty Noir Well if you train you can get stuff for less in the long run
Why do they keep heating with the torch
Shaping on the pipe occurs in the 1500°-2100º F range, 800°-1150º C, so they are heating it to keep the glass in that temperature range. If it gets too cool, it will crack and fall off.
so amazed with these techniques
