In the mid 1950s, when tv was live, they had to fill space when a show ended early. A film of Candy doing this number was one of the fillers they used fairly often. I was 10 or 11 at the time and loved the video and really loved the little man who did it (though i did not know his name). Move now to 1973 and at LAJC one day a fellow student, Theresa Candido was playing this on the piano. I told her about my knowing the song and, lo and behold the next thing I knew I was meeting Candy. Over the next two years i was invited to their house where Candy dug out his bass and played for me and his family. The more i knew Candy and his family, the more i loved them all. I am the proud owner of a demo 45 rpm that Candy made with "The mouse that wanted to fly" on one side and "Barnacle Bill" the sailor on the other. My love to Candy's family and thanks for the memories. By the way Jacob Keene, all of that was Candy's real voice. everytime you watch the Wizard of Oz and hear the apple tree complaining...that's Candy!
Michael, that's a WONDERFUL story. I'm thinking what a thrill it must have been for you to "discover" this hero of your childhood. And how wonderful it had to be for Candy, all those years later, to be able to connect with a "true fan" (because aren't those affections we develop as kids the purest?). And the fact you went on to become an actual friend of the family just makes it all the sweeter.
Fidget went for dinner. He had only 15 cents for one meatball. He then wanted bread, but waiter being the Captain Crocodile says, “You get no bread with One Meatball.”

Tremendous vocal range from Candy Candido in an entertaining bit . He also voiced many cartoons and was the voice of the angry apple tree in The Wizard of Oz .

I'd never heard his name before today, but Candy Candido must have the widest vocal range of any vocalist I've listened to. I recognized the low voice from some of his voice work in Disney movies (though I had to look him up to verify which ones), but my GOODNESS how can those highest high notes and lowest low notes come from the same singer?
CANDY CANDIDO'S "ONE MEATBALL" IS BACK ON AGAIN AT LAST! :D Thanks a million for posting this on youtube again, laird23! This is one of my alltime favorite versions of "One Meatball"! :D ;)
Candy Candido’s vocal range was just unbelievable the fact that he could a high pitch voice one moment and switch to a very low Beltone in a second that’s impressive
I've seen this song twice at the Alamo Drafthouse recently - once for Spider-verse and once for No Hard Feelings. They always put on the best stuff before their movies.
Just how in the world did Candy make his voice sound so gravelly like that? You'd have to smoke packs of cigarettes everyday since childhood to make a voice like that.
That kind of voice doesn't come from smoking! His vocal chords had the ability to be very relaxed for the low notes and very tight for the high notes. He made good use of what he was born with! He was a bass player and a vocalist in his early years and then got into acting. Very funny man!
For all you Candy fans...be sure and watch the film "Roberta" with astaire and rogers....Candy does a great dance with Fred and is sprinkled throughout the film as the bass player in the group "Wabash Indianians".
Candy did a lot of work on radio ( Jimmy Durante Show ) and was quite popular in the 40s and 50s….remember the Bugs Bunny cartoon with the construction guy in the hard hat…”I’m Feeling Mighty Low…” Bud Abbott even partnered with him after his split with Lou Costello but the chemistry was not there…
I've actually seen him perform a few times, 60 some years ago, at Crescent Bay Council Scout Exposition, at Corsair Field, Santa Monica Community College, Santa Monica, CA.
