    the OG posi-trac is the eaton 28 spline found in the original muscle cars it used disc style clutch's way better than auburn cone clutch you can find eaton posi in 68-77 A body 77-96 B body and 76-87 G body 8.5" rear ends its rare to find a eaton posi in a 7.5" housing. just know that gm went from 28 to 30 spline in 1990 on all 8.5" rear ends.

    When I made this video I was just messing around in the backyard. I had no idea that so many people would watch it. I am blown away at all of the comments. I see a lot of people needed help and I'm sorry that I did not reply at the time. I had forgot the password to this page for years. I know most of the people that commented probably no longer have the vehicles LOL. Just to update the info given in this video, the Auburn unit is not rebuildable. Once it wears out it is trash. But it still is the better unit for a straight line burn out. The torsen is a better unit for motocross or doing donuts. I still prefer for the Torsen. The govloc is still a dependable unit but if u try to put power to it, it will not live too long.

    My 87 Grand National WE4 came stock with 28 spline limited slip posi. I just pulled my gears out to rebuild and replace my clutches, plates, and preload S spring. I’m seriously considering ordering some 4.10/4.11 gearing to replace my 3.42 stock gearing because I noticed one single 1/4” chunk of gear missing from my ring gear. All the other gears look ok and nothing is broken other then the clutches are worn well past the service limits. Now not that it matters but I’ve owned this car since it was brand new. On my 17th birthday my mom loaned me the cash to buy this car because I was a very disrespectful person especially to my mom and was expelled from my high school for fighting (what can I say I was very angry that my farther was taken from me at 9 years old by cancer) so I was transferred to Automotive HS on the other end of Brooklyn NY. 2 hour commute by public transportation (the school purposely did this so I would just drop out)
    So my mom who worked 2 jobs made me a deal that if I stated and completed my last years of high school she would lend me the money in cash to buy what was then and still is my dream car a new 87 Buick Grand National. At that time I was running with a bad bunch of guys who most have passed away from traumatic injuries in the streets. But I did have a job working in Waldbaums supermarket. So I accepted that offer before she could finish saying it.
    So we started looking for my first car. Every Buick dealer we went to told me to give up trying to buy any turbo regal because they are completely sold out of every variation Grand National, turbo T, limited T Type. They all tried to talk me into a regular base regal painted black. I wasn’t going for it. So fortunately enough my mom left out phone number with every dealer just in case. On February 25th Garden Buick on Long Island called and it was a lady supervisor who said we don’t have any Grand Nationals but we have a Turbo T WE4. St that time not myself nor anyone else who worked there knew much about it other then the person who ordered it had to back out of it. So if I was interested. When I came to see it I knew this was gunna be my first car. It was basically a lighter, faster ,and limited edition of the Grand National and literally everything on the exterior was black. Has lighter aluminum rims, aluminum front and rear bumpers, but had the exact drivetrain as a Grand National and the interior was exactly the same. The dash and trim was the same colors. The only interior differences was the carpet was gray instead of black and the seats were all grey instead of 2 tone. The person who ordered it special ordered it with all painted black rims. I fell in love with this car. And the best thing about this was they were able to sneak it past the dmv and titled it in my name only even tho I was only 17 in 1987 but fortunately I shared the exact same name as my dad who passed away a few years before. This was back in 87 and they probably thought it was him. So I still have the original title and every single document I ever received regarding this car. I still have the window sticker. And my mom didn’t want anything to do with the sale. No co buyer, no lien, not even a promissory note to pay. But I treated that loan like it was a real car payment and every month she got her payment. I paid that loan every month even before my rent was paid.
    I do have to admit that buying this car was the best thing that happened to me. It taught me responsibility, respect for other people’s feelings, and it showed me how badly I was treating the one person who had my best interest at heart. It brought my relationship with my mother very close. There are horrible things that I said to her that I wish I could take back and the guilt still haunts me to today. So I finished high school. Went to Kingsborough community college got my degree in communications and radio broadcasting (I did a lot of freestyle and Latin hip hop which was very popular in those days). I interned at HOT 97 (at that time it was all Freestyle, dance ,and house music with a little hip hop). I had a very bright future as a hip hop and freestyle DJ as well as a great Turntablist. But ,,unfortunately I followed my real dream and became a fdny firefighter I just retired in 2011 after 22 years of service and a fractured hip along with severe asthma from responding to the wtc collapse on 9-11-01.
    But on 6/4/1997 my mom unexpectedly passed away at 56 from s heart attack and I’m still crushed over that. That was a hard one to swallow. After her passing I couldn’t even look at this car without tearing up. My sister owned a house on Long Island and she let me park it in her garage. So I drove it there some time in 1997 parked it. Removed the battery and never touched it again. Nobody touched it for 21 years. I moved to Florida a few years ago after I retired from fdny. My sister retired last year from her job and sold her house so last month she shipped me the car snd for some reason I don’t feel sad looking at it anymore. It actually reminds me of how she changed me through this car. So I’ve been fixing it up. I never prepared it for storage so the gas tank had 21 year old gas inside it and was rotting from the inside out I’m amazed that it didn’t leak. It was nasty looking so I replaced everything from the fuel tank to the injectors with the exception of the fuel rails i just cleaned them. I replaced the ECU because for some reason it wasn’t sending the fire wire signal to switch on the fuel pump, oil pump gears and packed them with petroleum jelly, I replaced every drop of fluids in the car, unfortunately my powermaster brake booster died so I had to come up with $500 for a good used one, I put kyb shocks all around, AEM wideband, oil pressure, water temp, boost, Casper’s knock gauges, a scanmaster, Walbro 255 pump, fuel pump hot wire kit. I always had the alcohol injection kit but I don’t trust the pump sitting all those years so I’m just replacing the whole kit. 60 lb injectors and a turbo tweak chip. After replacing all that plus 4 new tires oh and all new vacuum lines and a major engine bay cleaning. I took it for a ride and it drove and boosted great but something felt off about the rear diff. It almost felt like driving on a very loose “open” type rear diff. And the rear end was literally the only fluid I didn’t change because it still looks new underneath the only grime on the rear was the goop leaking from a pinhole in the old gas tank. So I opened it up and found that chunk missing from the ring gear. (I think it was seized and the shipping company dragged it with a winch onto their car carrier and broke it.
    But omg I’m so sorry for rambling on. I was thinking about my mom tonight and had a few drinks. My wife left me so I’m all alone and I guess I vented on your video. But my original question is my car has the turbo v6 231 with a ton of power and I want more off the line (slam me into me seat torque) torque. I don’t and never have really beaten on it my car runs,shifts perfectly and only had 59k miles on it. All I have left to do is figure out this gearing dilemma and I want a new paint job same paint all black.
    Again I apologize for my rambling.
    Should I go with 3.73 or 4.10-4.11 ring gears?

      Hey man, sorry for the late response, I rarely check for the comments. I really need to do better about my RUclips account. I’m yaboyace though. Life can be real cold at times man. I’m sorry to hear about the things you’ve been through coming up. As far as gear swap, I would not do 410s. I have a buddy that is really into the turbo Buicks. He says, turbos like having something to push up against and adding too much gear takes that away. I’ve done quite a few a few gear swap on GNs and every swap has been from the stock 42s to 373s. And most of these cars had a bigger wheel on them. Side note, the jump from 342 to 373 will not blow your mind, but it is a noticeable difference and worth the upgrade.

LOL the things people will say and all the need to do is grab a book or google stuff to learn. Great video tho

    No base V6 Camaro got a Posi. Y87 packaged cars, however, did. The wheels were hard to turn because you where in park. The wheels aren't meant to move while in park. If you were to put it in neutral or even a forward gear, it'd take less to turn the wheels. With an open diff, the tires will spin in opposite directions. With a Posi both will spin in the same direction.

  • @chadportenga7858
    @chadportenga7858 4 месяца назад

    You forgot to mention that the first one (G80 Locker) will fail catastrophically if you try to spin the tire with one on ice/water/sand and the other on pavement. When the locking dog engages, if the axle RPMs are too high, it just destroys itself.
    Also, you didn't talk about the 4th one (far right). What was that one?

    Good video :) I'm looking at Auburn posi for my truck. I just blew up the stock locker that you talked about there on the left. Caught some metal in the ring and pinion and shredded my drive shaft. No damage to my transfer case or trans luckily. I was able to take the drive shaft pieces off and drive home slow in front wheel drive.

    In my experience You will get stuck with Limited Slip just as fast as with an open diff, Limited Slip is a joke, unless it locks up both wheels. the only real choice you have is to Lincoln Lock, a Lunch Box locker, or a complete unit like a Detroit Locker, then there's spools and mini spools, If you rely on a LS differential, you WILL end up stuck if you go off road at all, trust me I have been stuck on wet grass with an open diff,in a long wheel base pick up, bad ass motor good tires, just a shitty one wheel spin open diff, I learned right then and it never happened again. My very first FULL POSI was a Lincoln Locker.

  • @HeavyOlds

    Somebody swapped an open diff from an 87 into my 1986 IROC. So if I bought a new Auburn HP, that would be pretty much the same limited slip it would have originally came with? I’m trying to keep it stock so I don’t void my collector plates insurance.

    • @acetherepp
      @acetherepp 4 года назад

      I always tell people to go with Eaton. A 69 Cutlass should have an 8.2 10 bolt on it. Either the limited slip or the true track are good units. You can get them online from places like summit or jegs. If you really planning to burn some rubber it is best to buy new. When you buy a used unit you really don't know how much life is left on it

    There are basically 3 types of rear diffs: Open, 1 wheel squeal, Posi, 2 symmetrical rotation with Limited Slip for cornering and Spool, basically a permanent solid axle. Probably the easiest vid on type of Posi (LSD are available). Too many kids today say "I want a Posi to drift with not an LSD!" They really want a Spool not a LSD. A LSD will NOT lock up under Normal, light throttle driving. You WANT that for daily driving because when you go around corners the LSD allows the outer radius tire to turn faster and the inner to Actually push the car. If you had a Spool, every time you turned a corner, the inner tire and the outer tire are rotating at the same speed causing tire chatter and excessive tire wear.

    • @DjJtown
      @DjJtown 9 лет назад +1

      +jimm41 7 Yah, spools are are unbeatable when it comes to the drag strip but for daily driving that hopping gets old very fast; not to mention the cost of replacing the tires yearly if you drive it on the street even occupationally.

Are they a different size than the original G-Body 7.5 axles or can I order standar 28 spline G-Body axles? I read somewhere that you had to get Grand National axles... but I think they're 8.5's. the one on the left is the truck/SUV van Automatic rear locker (g80) performs like an open differential but when you slip and spinning it will lock up like a spool to give you traction especially when your wheel is of the ground and the other is planted the plant wheel moves the rig or the one that has the least resistance will move it. had a 98 burb and z71 Silverado both 4x4 with this differential powered by a l31 (vortec 5700 5.7 350) miss both them trucks. you used the g80 diff for towing, going through rough terrain, work not hard acceleration or racing ,great units for all around driving and will last when you don't abuse them! and a side note don't put additive in the g80, will glaze up and go boom!

Ive been through a few rearends now so is there anything I can pull from junyard that will fit my rear thats stronger or is my only option to order an actual posi unit from summit or jegs or somehwere. Thanks

      You can get aftermarket axles, or Grand national axles. Grand national axles. The "C"clip button has to be ground down a bit and the "C" clips opened up. People tell me you can use the 8.5" "C" clips. I have not tried this

    • @zackbush2531

      Richard Wright In my honest opinion I would get rid of the 22's go back to 20's. Honestly depending on your rear that you have now, possibly a 3.55 I wouldn't go above a 3.90. For optimal fuel and and power. If you're only looking to for Drag I would go with 4.10 for sure.

    Okay i am new to posi rear ends...i bought a 2005 silverado that has one...not sure i like it.seems great if you drive in mud or dirt...but making turns on pavement seems to wear tires out....not sure the truck came with it or not...does anyone know if you can convert it back to regular differential? or maybe ill just leave it as is since i am going to sell it anyway....just not sure a silverado with a posi rear is something that people want....thanks

    The only thing you'd have to take off is the inspection cover on the housing. 10 bolts and 15 minutes of your time to get it off, check it out, refilled with new oil, and back on. You are also saying "..all my strength to turn the wheel with only one wheel off the ground..". It's not hard to turn because it's a "clutched posi", it's hard because you have to have BOTH tires off the ground. I have a clutched posi in my 93 Z and I can turn it with minimal effort in N, both wheels off the ground.

    i would go with the auburn design, with a zexel or torsen only one wheel will spin if said wheel has no traction just like an open diff, its a torque bias system, if one wheel has 100% traction while the other has 0, the wheel with 0 gets 100% of the torque

  • @carlherrerasr.8392

    I truly understand what you are conveying and the misconception of POSI traction, but there is a difference between the lockers, that's where limited slip comes from, before the "80s" there were no such thing as limited slip. On take off limited slip lockers only lock during hard acceleration and then release to allow normal driving, hens the name "Limited Slip" a true POSI will lock both axle all the time and will break loose during turns and cause your tires to chirp, that's a true POSI. and Auburn is the weakest type of locker if it has the cone clutches, (may be they stop making that unit) -as not keeping the wheels locked.
