  • In this video we compare an Open Differential (Ford Ranger) to a Yukon DuraGrip limited slip differential (Chevy Silverado). We are going to put them in a situation where they don't perform well at all, when one tire has lots of grip while the other side nearly doesn't have any.

It takes too long to get going, and I can feel the tires spinning and it irritates me. Knowing that one tire just spins.

    Thank you as this seems like one of the few if not only video that shows some isolated, trackable results and reasons for how different products work. And I'm STILL confused. I don't think it's anything you missed... I just tend to be one of those people who has to eliminate all possible wrong thoughts to totally understand something, or... some people say they got it when they're actually still learning and I'm the type who wants complete mastery otherwise I feel lost.
    I have an old Isuzu Trooper (it's all I could afford but I desperately missed being off-road for years, so I bought it). It's a '99, so actually one of the last versions, but still that's old tech. It actually does well off-road because of the good rear wheel travel (quite a range for stock!), but i think the front is open and rear is limited slip.
    Here's some stupid questions;
    With GM parts used in "Frankenstein" joint-products like the Trooper, it actually says "G80" on the plate under the hood where options are listed. I've heard this is sometimes what is labeled even though the version may only be limited slip, not an actual "locker". The behavior of my Trooper's "G80" option tends to support this, as I was stuck like a helpless baby when bogging down in foot-deep icy snow... you know the type of snow like a snow cone consistency-- the worst. The layers underneath slightly melt if you spin, compact into a dense, sweating, ice-ball if you continue to spin in place. The other rear tire did not spin. This is in 4 "Hi" and 4 "Lo". The "Hi" in this case is Isuzu's T.O.D. part-time 4WD system, sending power to the front only if needed... a precursor to what most 4WD trucks offer today. I finally got out by using my little shovel do dig out around the wheels somewhat, threw some dirt and sticks in front and behind each wheel, and aired-down to about 27psi all around. It just walked right out after that. No winching.
    I went straight to some large dirt shoulders of rural roads after that to test it in 2WD to see if anything kicked in besides one wheel... yup.
    Interestingly though, one test gave me a right wheel long continuous peel-out, and the other kicked in for about 10 feet and then no dirt torn up... just the right. That's right side about 20 feet, left side maybe ten.
    The second time... I floored it good and got two long torn up patches in the dirt about 15 feet each. Even a slight fish-tail. Started and stopped at the same spots with enough throttle. I'm confused. Wished it did that when gently trying to go through slushy snow. You know what? In fluffy, new, well below-freezing snow, it DOES kick both wheels in better it seems. I even feel it kick in kinda hard with not much throttle. I'm still confused.
    The old Trooper does okay, and actually rarely gets stuck. When it does get stuck though, or fails a climb (VERY rare actually)... it is very stuck. I wish the limited slip was always ready to engage but ALSO a locker could be flicked on just in case. I want both in one. Does that exist?
    Finally.. I didn't know the "open" diffs would actually send power to the other side. I guess I never understood it. Does that mean it's just never going to turn both wheels at the same time, because it's "open"? I thought only one wheel turned the whole time. Just ignorant, but mostly because many, MANY people are lousy teachers and can't explain something to save their lives. When I was young they just said stuff like "yeah that's open diff... just one wheel" and left it at that. No internet back then... it came down to how much time and money you had to mess with that stuff.
    Anyway, that means if you apply the E-brake, somehow that can make power shift to the other wheel even on an open differential? I didn't know that.

      Front and rear Eaton True Tracs would be awesome in your application.

    • @CL-ty6wp
      @CL-ty6wp 2 года назад

      open diffs will spin both in dirt and sometimes wet tar. It sends torque to the wheel with the least resistance. A lunchbox locker in the rear might be worth looking into. You will have to be careful turning not to accelerate or it'll lock/bind and wet/snow covered roads it'll want to come sideways on you since it locked. It basically acts like a welded rear end or a spool unless your off the gas turning. It also will click in turns. But they are cheap, relatively easy to install and are locked except when turning carefully. It is like gm's g80 locker, a simpler design but a little more aggressive.
      Like the video stated none are perfect. His recommendation in the reply is probably your best, most practical option.
      Any locker in the rear if you're willing to deal with on road characteristics.

    The yukon duragrip as far as i know is a spring loaded type, not a proper clucth type, so it's like always "locked" until the differencies in resistence torque overcome the spring loaded torque.
    In both autolocking differential, clutch type and torsen, the locking activation is from the torque applied from the engine to the tyre, so if you have zero traction on one wheel also the clutch type will slip, it locks partially because of the inertia of the tyre.
    In offroad you want to use a manual lock to overcome this problem.
    Thanks for your video, it's strange that even with an open differential without the obstacle the behaviour is quite similar.

    • @kyleclearwater7380

      Auto locking differentials, such as lunchbox lockers do not require any tire to have traction in order to lock.
      Lunchbox lockers are held locked by the center pin of the differential and therefore only need torque from the driveshaft to keep them locked.
      That is why you can jack up one side and rotate that tire by hand. But if you have one side jacked up and give it throttle in gear, both tires will spin.

      @@AnthonyJ350 Thanks. This was better info, but does the Yukon LSD cause any kind of chirping or bucking driving on normal dry pavement. The ability for one wheel to spin at a different rate is really what all these diffs are about. I have a Rubicon JK with air lockers. It climbs chain-link fences with its 4:1 transfer case. However, any locking on dry pavement turns it into Mr. Toad's wild ride. Now I also have an older 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 with a LSD. It does great burnouts, but on wet payment, the hemi motor puts down too much power. With no weight in the rear, it slides big time. So much so, I can't pull out in front of anyone. The reason for all of this, I am having a new OLD 1974 Chevy K5 Blazer being delivered. It's retired, so no off-roading. However, we do live in wet Washington State and it does snow. The open diff it has now will not work 365-days a year, so I want a LSD that truly works without drivability issues during nice weather. The K5 makes a nice sound with the 383 stroker, but no racing. Just pleasure driving. The Yukon LSD is recommended, or do you have a better solution? Thank you!! 👍

    I went from a Colorado with a G80 to a Sierra with open diffs. Can anyone tell me anything good about an open diff? The G80 just kicked in on snow and ice. I just kept on trucking. This Sierra gets stuck in a parking lot and I have to engage the 4wd just to get started moving. Total waste.
