I bought the VHS of this when I was in high school. Even 18 years later, it strikes a chord. This was a labor of love. The acting, the Red Elvises. It's so lovely.

After half a dozen furious Google searches and scrolling increasingly desperately through someone's 303-item 90s IMDB list, I finally tried "post-apocalyptic elvis vegas movie" and this was the first hit so that's the story of how I finally remembered the name of this movie.
Tvtropes has once again ruined my life. Reading about Fallout New Vegas mentions an icon that references this film, so of course I had too read about it, and here I be, watching it. Good times.
My life was honestly shit right up until I watched this absolute masterpiece and decided to put my hair in a pompadour and do martial arts. It may have made no money and ended the careers of everybody involved, but this film did save my life. Can we really put a value on that? And Mungia, Falcon, if you could see my hair right now I'm sure you would be proud.

The folks working on the Fallout show best look to this movie for inspiration, as it kinda nails the Fallout aesthetic on a microbudget, despite such different subject matter. Been in love with this movie since it first came out on DVD and I listen to the Red Elvises all the time because of it.
I've been looking for this movie for more than a decade! Saw it once as a kid and the only thing I remembered was the last scene with the child in Buddy's clothes and guitar- no title, no plot, no nothing. I can't believe I finally found it after so many years of fruitless searching !!!
Fun factoid: This was one of the first films ever scored by composer Brian Tyler. But he has gone on to have great success in twenty years since, including scoring several films in both the "Fast and Furious" and "Marvel Cinematic Universe" franchises.
SPOILERS: My thoughts are the kid is the Samurai. The Samurai is wrestling with his humanity as he kills and nears Vegas. The kid is his memories of his own youth. He's trying to leave that weakness behind. His death is the death of his inhuman self, and the kid walking in his clothing to Vegas, then turning into the Samurai, is his regaining of his humanity.
God I love this movie. It takes itself *just* the right amount of serious, just the right balance of cheesy camp and the rare sentimental moment. The main character is just invincible and OP enough to be entertaining (esp since he only really cares about Vegas and doesn't want to be dragged into these dumb fights over and over). Really a solid film and a great watch lol

I just bought it only to find out its 4:3 and wont even play 16:9 on my new hd tv. Kinda pissed about that. Wish they would rerelease it on bluray with the right dimensions.

IIRC, there was an interview where they said they would track backwards, making a trilogy. The sequel would've been Buddy as a teenager, and then as a kid himself. Elements would've included things like machine-gun toting soda-jerks at a Diner of Doom, and [I think, hazy now] a love interest from a gang of gals in poodle skirts. :) Maybe one day...
I was a DJ on my college radio station, and I remember getting a kick out of the cover for the soundtrack (we never played it on our show, though; it was a metal show, so this didn't fit our format).

Some genius modded the Six String Samurai soundtrack into Fallout: New Vegas, and I rock that shit ALL the time.
FalloutNV has some a melee achievement with the Vault Boy dressed up as Buddy.... The makers knew the film.
The 90s gave us slick action movies like this. Real martial arts and not a not of computer generated special effects.
