Why the violence is happening: a) Hospitals are throwing out mental health patients who run out of insurance. b) The city is investing too much in cops and not enough in job programs and mental health programs. c) People are stressed out due to global pandemics and lack of jobs, plus global warming. Poor folks rarely get mental health help. When rich corps need help, they get lawyers, accountants, and taxpayer bailouts. When poor folks need help they get arrested or pushed onto tracks.
You can't arrest your way out of this mess New York is in. Look at the root cause and provide the necessary resources..
I've traveled in Europe. The subways are modern and clean. And most importantly, many of them have a barrier between the platform and track. When a subway car pulls in, there are doors in the barriers that open up. Why is this so hard to do in NYC?
They claim the NYC subway is old and installing barriers would be too expensive. Amazing how the London and Paris subways find a way to install barriers.
There's 500 stations in nyc. Not an easy solution.

Paris retrofitted them onto Lines 1, 4, and part of 13, which are all old, because they had high ceilings and/or few columns. The MTA has said it's possible to build them at stations like that, of which we have a handful. But both London and Paris have said that much of their systems can't accommodate them for the same reasons the MTA gives.

What I can't understand is, how much trouble would it be for the train to come to a near stop BEFORE entering the station and SLOWLY pulling in so that if some lunatic does push someone, the train can stop before running them over. I know they slow down and there's a lot of momentum, but an extra few minutes to enter the station slower and safer can't be too much to ask for. Or how about gates that keep people away from the platforms' edge that don't open until the train comes to a stop.

You're referring to the incident that happened at a subway in Philly where there was an altercation before the subway pushing. This is not that story and the murderer was unprovoked by the victim; it was not a retaliatory action based off the actions of the victim. This man straight murdered the victim for no reason at all. They are not the same 2 stories.
