wow as a gen-z kid - it took me a couple hours but I vividly remember that ending with the general dude falling over with the alien and the window showing chaos outside when I was little little swore this was a fever dream
If you watch the full episode his power was on reserves and he had no water. The aliens have about a week max where he can still push the button, maybe less if the power cuts out, which would mean the bomb would just go off. Also he would probably be unable to move/not be unconscious after more than a few days of dehydration. Depending on if the aliens have access to the general's brain they could probably get down there and stop it in time, since they would know all the traps and workarounds. If they don't have access to all his memory or there were traps or whatever that were only known by someone who died than the aliens definitely lose.
They definitely left that ending open to so many possibilities. If it takes the aliens a week to get there and neutralize it then they can forget it. He'll be dead in days without water. Not sure if the aliens are aware of that. But whatever happens its now a race against time for the aliens to get to that bunker and deactivate it.
@@invisiblesun6595 What I'm pretty sure of The aliens are parasitic and the General was on the delegation for talks the talks were a rues to infect and control the delegates and to control the doomsday device. They controlled the general and his body but NOT his mind the aliens kept things "peaceful" while quietly dismantling the doomsday device they didn't understand it though and made it deadlier. When the time ran out and the warheads armed the aliens had no choice but to take Washington and seize control.
@@danielmiller9012 That was the main reason I didn't respond to him. He made a lot of assumptions that the show itself never even touched on. I do agree they've had access to the doomsday device since they drilled into one of the bunkers and presumably killed that poor Aussie. But they never quite disabled it, which is why they needed the LT still alive. And it left quite a cliffhanger. We DO know they've only got a day or two to get to him before he dies of dehydration, as he was already delirious.
This was a great episode. Too bad it couldn't be shown in its entirety. Another good episode was one called "The Refuge." The fact is, Showtime's Outer Limits outpaced the original show from 1963. It's a shame more episodes can't be uploaded and viewed here on You Tube. It was one of the best science fiction/horror/fantasy shows produced in the 1990's!
my favorite episode of the outer limits, the fact that you don't know the whole story until the end, so you and the main character are lost wondering, what do you do?
Yeah, it's an abominable ending, regardless. The only question remaining was which way did that abomination flow? Did the aliens get there in time to successfully disarm the device? Or did the LT die due to dehydration first, effectively ending the dead man's switch? I'd wager he had days to live. If it takes the aliens any longer than that to get to the bunker then BOOM.

Not really, the idea was that many different counties have created those bunkers really deep and will need some time to seal them. But more important you want to have some time to see how the soldiers inside manage the isolation and looming treath.

it's actually pretty hard to terraform a planet. You need a lot of conditions that are almost impossible to find. a viable planet with the right gravity and distance from a star ... that would be enough right there.
@Joseph Bourne Pretty sure as well, if a species has the technology to reach earth, they as well have the technology to stop missiles in their silos or anywhere where they are to be launched. Nothing we could do. On the brighter side, such a civilization hardly would be focused on warfare.

Perfect episode to watch during Quarantine AKA=The REAL Dead Man's Switch.
I had a conference call with my family and it made me think of this episode.
