I’m in my 70s and fifty years ago, in the 1970s, no one called any music yacht rock. We called it soft rock. The California sound was the Beach Boys.
And later there was the Calif- LA Sound that featured tight jazzy bluesy grooves like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Toto, Boz Scaggs, etc.
It's absolutely stupid. It sounds like some commercial scheme that K-Tell or Time Life came up with to sell records to a specific generation.
The best of bread is one of my favorite albums!
Agreed. Although I went to college in the 80s The Best of Bread was a huge album in our Dorm and I so love it still.
For me for a great Bread album - Bread Anthology
Totally agree! Great album. 😅
It's a must-have as far as I'm concerned and it's also a great road trip music
People are mad at the obsession on genres - this is NOT YOUR ISSUE! Everything back in the day was hard rock or soft rock.....that was it. You guys are great!
Not exactly true. You forgot about at least 3 that I can think of off the top of my head.
Country
Jazz
bluegrass
All of them were prominant depending on where you went. My parents tried to crush my soul with SOOOOOOO much country. I still don't like hearing Conway Twitty come on. ugh
Yeah - don't get so wrapped up in the comments about GENRES (we didn't, back in the day)....at least no one I KNEW did....you listened to it - if you liked it: YOU LIKED IT!! :) SIMPLE! ❤❤❤❤
@@realtorjames33 "jimmy, jimmy pls. don't cry, you'll forget me by and by..."
Nonsense, we had many labeled genres back in the '70s: 1) Rock (CSNY) 2) Hard Rock (Led Zeppelin) 3) Soft Rock (America) 4) Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath) 5) Punk Rock (The Sex Pistols) 6) Philly Soul (The Stylistics) 7) Disco (The Bee Gees) 8) Country 9) Jazz ... do I need to go on?? smh
There’s Classical, Jazz, Country, Blues, R&B and Rock. Then you have your subsets, but it was never about “genres” per se. It was on the radio! That’s all that mattered, if it played on the radio, we listened to it! Top 40 AM Radio.
I'm 64 and didn't hear the term "yacht rock" until a couple of years ago.
Dude, it was Yaught rock for anything YUPPIE trying to look smooth until we rolled up on the bikes and then it was Thorogood bad to the bone
Same here! I heard of Corporate Rock like Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles etc.,
No yacht rock,lol.
Bread had a number of great songs. There was a time when men and women got close to each other, slow dancing. Bread made songs that were perfect for this. I miss those days.🎶🎸
I'm 66 yo and man this band was so good and this song really hit me I would sing this song to my girl back in the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Memories
I'm 66 years old myself and I loved Bread, a man. We called it soft rock. At the time.
Bread is the band hard rockers made fun of with their "friends", but then snuck away to listen and dream of their crushes... amazing band. "Everything I Own" and "If" are a couple more fantastic tracks.
And "Diary" and "Aubrey" are two more.
Yacht Rock is a millenial/Gen Z term, which is fine if it works for them, but the boomers were not as obsessed at slotting songs into categories. This was much more radio and marketing types who were looking to capture a
demographic. We listened to EVERYTHING back in the day, and it wasn't till the 80s that radio stations started slicing up the market. The suits who have corrupted the art and economics of the music industry invented this crazy shit.
Exactly
'The Guitar Man' is another great song by Bread.
1 DIARY
2 AUBREY
3 GOODBYE GIRL
4 IF
5 SWEET SURRENDER
6 EVERYTHING I OWN
Guitar Man
Lost without your Love
It Don't Matter to Me
I'm 62, and the first time I heard "Diary" as a kid, my heart was broken. That song made me realize the fragility of love, but nothing prepares you for real heartbreak.
Not even the last heartbreak.
I always felt sorry for guys who didn't get into Bread back then. Girls loved me. 😂
AWWWW - I'm kinda diggin' you from just the remark, Randy! :)
@@Jude_196 😂 In all seriousness, The Best of Bread is one of the best albums ever made. 🙂
I love Everything I Own and Guitar Man by Bread. I cry every time I hear Everything I Own.
Bread- Everything I Own
Its true, the term Yacht Rock never existed and is a new term. it wasn't west coast it was simply Soft Rock and Bread was the epitome of that music in the 70s.
David Gates was the lead singer and song writer. Bread was huge and had a bunch of hits. Gates went solo in 1977 and had a hit with the Goodbye Girl that he wrote for the Neil Simon movie.
I remember hearing "Everything i own" on the radio in mid 70's
I had never heard the term Yacht rock until until recently, maybe the last 10 years. During the 70's, 80's and even 90's it was just called soft rock.
Please jump on the “bread wagon”. My opinion they never made a bad song. I’m in my 70s, old girl from Australia and love watching reactions from young ones to our music.
Gorgeous couple 💞🇦🇺
“It Don’t Matter to Me.” Tears my heart in a wonderful way.
This was NOT music you'd hear on a Yacht party, lol!!
Im 65 and Ive been loving them for over 50 years They are timeless
OH YEAH, THIS WAS A GREAT SOFT ROCK BAND T AND TASHA, JUST LIKE AMERICA! 😊 GUITAR MAN, IF, MAKE IT WITH YOU, 👍 ENJOYYYYYY GUYS!
The definition of soft rock. Their Anthology Album has inspired me to write a trilogy book series. Love them!
“ Yacht Rock” is a very recent term created by Sirius Radio . Back in the day, this music included R&B , funk, soft rock, etc. There was so much musical creativity back then that no term could encapsulate it all.
I remember this music from when I was little on the soft rock stations. Never heard it called yacht rock until this channel.
I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "If", "Make It With You", "Everything I Own", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
I was born in 1962 and I just called the music of my time TOP 40. If Casey Kasem played it, I loved it. ❤
This is softer rock and roll at its best. Girls dug it when out in the car. Mood music for lovin'.
The duet Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright collaborated and released their beautiful smash hit single back in 1979 with the song "With You I'm Born Again" that is easy listening and might be worth checking out. Syreeta was a former wife of the well-known recording artist Stevie Wonder. Billy had several popular hits back in the day. He also recorded with many renowned artists such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones and among others. 🎤🎹🎵🎶🔊💎
There is also another genre of rock that most forgot and that is Bubblegum Rock.
This song is from the Fall of '71 ---------at the same time Richard & Karen Carpenter had their Masterpiece, " Superstar " . Both were giant hits. ------This was another David Gates ballad masterwork, & my favorite by this group. -----------MJL. 77 y/o
I grew up listening to these guys. 'Make it with you', 'Diary' or 'When I need you' are my favs. Their songs were about love.
When I need You was sung by Leo Sayers
Thank you for changing the designation to soft rock. It is much more accurate of a description.
Grew up a 70's kid and these soft rock songs are classic 70's. Another song from the group America is " Daisy Jane" . Such a beautiful song from this same era.
soft rock was later teased by those who like a harder sound but then some bands like chicago who are considered harder also had some softer hits- early 70s soft rock was big; in the later part of the decade harder was more popular but then there was disco as well which many also rebelled against- I grew up in the 70s and enjoyed it all
Hi guys. Great reaction. If you enjoy Bread, try the songs "If", "Diary" and my personal favorite, "Aubrey".
Bread actually has some great songs. Alot of story telling.
I found her diary beneath the tree...
Oh, yes indeed
Oh yeah.. love me some Bread!! One of my favorites is the song "If". Enjoyed your reaction! And thanks for the reaction!
Bread has so many amazing songs. You really should dive into their whole catalogue. Also check out Carly Simon (You're So Vain) and Jim Croce (Time in a Bottle).
Great reaction...My favorite song by Bread is " If"... David Gates has the best voice I think I've ever heard for the soft rock genre... This is a good rabbit hole to go down if you want to hear more of this great band and their music...
What ? Yacht rock ? never heard that ! i m 67 and rock of the 60s 70s and 80s bands, was and still is my music ! i was more a underground rock, heavy rock and also soft rock ! Rock & Roll ! 😎
David Gates vocals: OH, MY!!! See Nordeguzman's suggestions...they are ALL FIRE!!! Mine are in a lil' different order - but: THERE IS NO BAD BREAD SONG!! :) LOVE THEM!!! ENJOY!!! I enjoyed the live!!
"Make it with You" is my favorite Bread song. Second is "Aubrey"
Would love to see an everything everything cold reactor reaction! It's criminally Underrated.
Any Bread song will be soft, sweet, probably romantic, well written lyrically and well performed.... hit after hit after hit....
Soft rock, or singer/song writer was a great genre back in the late 60's and most of the 70's. Never ever heard of Yacht Rock.
You can’t go wrong with any of the songs on the album The Best of Bread !!!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
"Yacht rock" is not a compliment.
I remember listening to a "Best of Bread" album my mother bought. It was great! And we were nowhere near being on a yacht! :) :) :)
Love your commentary, btw! :)
Yacht Rock was nerds with talent making amazing music. There was suddenly a market for great sounding music that wasn’t fronted by hot people. It was easy to mock because as good as they were at making music, was as bad as they were at looking cool. The Yacht Rock moniker comes from the attitude of Yuppies in McMansions trying to set up the best Hi-Fidelity audio experience… and soft rock had the best production. Rich people snapping their fingers to Steely Dan and feeling like winners.
wore out Best of Bread on 8 track 4 times. Then wore it out on cassette then on CD. It is the ultimate theme song tape for back seat athletics
You'd like the song "Fresh Air" by the band Quicksilver Messenger Service.
There was hard rock and soft rock back then. I never heard of yacht rock until decades later. Not sure where or why that term was created. It’s soft rock to me lol! 😂 Bread was a fabulous band.
Yacht rock is music you listen to with your boat shoes on :]
Or more likely, what you were listening to as you were speeding away trying to avoid the Coast Guard after that little "exchange" done in the middle of the ocean. ...
Yes, the term "yacht rock" implied that the songs weren't real rock and roll and listened to by people who were your brie and wine crowd. But rock was always a huge tent and, as other commenters have noted, most of us didn't pay attention to whether a song was hard or soft or whatever, but whether it was good.
Yes, there were plenty of bands that did soft rock music that weren't from California, although many of them didn't exclusively create soft rock. For instance, the Bee Gees have some soft rock hits, but they're also well known for their disco beat and they are definitely not from California or even American.
Excellent reaction!!! Great song!!! "Diary" is a great song. They have so many.
Back in the seventies stuff like Bread and The Carpenters were what we called soft rock. We had Soft Rock, Bubblegum Rock, Rock and Hard Rock. That's how I remember it. I was born in 57 so I remember these days well. Bread was actually an incredible band, they had a lot of #1 and Top Ten Hits between 1969 and around 1977.
Check out "Guitar Man", you'll love it.
Peace ❤
Anyone that was alive when this music was made does not call it yacht rock - simply called it soft rock. Was calling it that long before the labelling yahoos were born, hell, before their parents were born.
Great band
Man..1975..8th grade party in my basement. Put the Best of Bread album on and brought out the coke bottle for spin the bottle😮😂😂got to kiss the girl I was in heat for and made out for the rest of the album… a awesome memory I had forgot about until wstching your reaction.. thanks for the memories for this 63 yr old Rock n Roller👍👊😎🤘
I'm a big fan of Bread, I think you would like " guitar man" its a great song but any one you pick won't disappoint! Thanks so much 😊
I was rocking in the 70's and I have never heard that term yacht rock.
I’m 65 and have never heard the term Yacht Rock.
Its an after the fact silly term made up by a group of Gen Xers who hated Micheal McDonald and did an entire Internet Parody in the early 2000s. Its on YT. Its like a Junior High version of SNL. Then, because of the internet, it started being used by clueless corporate Radio Suits and the new Digital Radio stations to create interest.
"If" is my favorite
Sweet Surrender is my favorite Bread song. You’ll love it
"If" is another one of those songs.
You mentioned Chicago and the best of their soft rock songs was COLOR MY WORLD. The best of the era, us girls loved it cause we’d slow dance with that cute guy. Wink wink
One of my favorite songs when I was a kid.
The lead singer is David Gates. He grew up in Oklahoma and went to school with and was friends with Leon Russell. I dont put music from that day in categories really, disco being the exception.Bread had some beautiful music. "Diary" is one worth listening to.
Great song, they had some other big hits, too! I have never heard the term yacht rock until I clicked on this video lol!
i grew up listening to this group and every song of theirs is so sickeningly sweet it will give you diabetes. if i had to pick a favorite i guess i would pick "If" because the lyrics, by themselves, are amazing. i'm sure you will enjoy all of their songs.
Tht's "Baby I'm a want you" n u aint heard Bread till ya hear 🤟MOTHER FREEDOM👊💥Baby!
Bread was the best concert I ever attended bar none. I went to so many rock concerts that when you came out your ears was still hearing the music a week later but Bread was Awesome. Relaxed atmosphere. Yeah heavy rock n rollers would not care for them
I'm a heavy rocker and I think The Best of Bread is one of the best albums there is. 🙂
Guitar Man is a goo one.
I love the. way you both groove along fantastic you can see you really feel all of the music . love you both .Kevbo&Babyjack
Finally. Someone who does some research. Thank you, Tasha.
All of Bread’s songs are great
True…..yacht rock. Never heard of that. I’m cool either way. Bread will blow your mind. Serious acoustic guitar players, singers, songwriter and composers. Lot of smooth songs from bread
I Love Bread's music❣... Definitely react to more of them, and more Soft rock/Easy listening songs that were in the top 40 from this time period of 1970-75, frm my favorite groups/singer-songwriters

✌👧📻🌼🌻🌼
Bread was the make out music of my college generation (early 70s).
So romantic. I always loved Bread. Thanks😊
The "West Coast Sound" in the 70s did come from the LA area, mostly Laurel Canyon. It was different than the Beach Boys surfer rock in the 60s. Bands that epitomized the 60s/70s laid back West Coast sound included The Byrds, Mamas and Papas, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Poco, The Eagles, Carole King, Crosby-Stills-Nash-&Young, Neil Young solo, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Jackson Browne etc. It had more of a hippy/folk slant and even country rock emphasis. Whole different than most of what is claimed as "Yacht Rock".
Diary by Bread is my favorite song by them
Such a sad song.
Great song from a great band brings back memories when I was a kid. I only heard that term yacht rock about 5 years ago I don't know who devised it but its a very modern term because it was not used in the 60s. 70s or 80s.Try listening to some of their other great songs like -'Make it with you' , 'If', 'Diary', Aubrey', 'Guitar Man', 'Everything I own' just to name a few.
Going on a date in high school in the 70’s every guy had the Best of Bread 8 track queued up.
Short & sweet...that's what you call easy listening!
Every rock band has a few soft rock songs.
I had the Best of Bread on tape and nearly wore it out.🥰
I love the reactions! This is "Laurel Canyon" meets "Soft Rock".
This is my favorite bread song!
My favorite song is If
Right on brother!
Good perspective!!! Some people just like to hate on certain type of music!!! There was a time when people would hate on Disco!!! I think all this music is great
It's simply 'Soft Rock' and the term "yacht rock" was never part of the lexicon when these songs were popular. It's a dismissive term referring to older mature people that are financially comfortable. You can include some 'Pop' songs in the Soft Rock category just as you can add some R&B like songs from the Chi-lites or Roberta Flack and Barry White.
Goodness what memories !!❤️❤️
"Fishin' Boat Rock".......I like it.
Bread was SO good.
As a teenager in the 70s this is the greatest make out group of all time!’ 😉
How great was this band!!!! Bread has religious undertones. Listening to their music is like breaking bread together.
I'm really enjoying all the music, I'd like to make a suggestion. Surgar Loaf : don't call us we'll call you. Thanks again.
