In that first episode when the boy is being tested in the QZ there's a chart on the wall that shows how long the infection takes depending on where you're bit. For the algorithm.
The score is from Gustavo Santaolalla, who is the same composer from the game. So glad that they brought him back for the show. His music is one of the many things that make the game so great.
The infection takes a few hours to completely affect you. Tess got infected at the museum when they were fighting the two clickers. Once you’re bitten within 24 hours, you’re done.

You can see the bite on Tess before it was revealed.
The sound effects of the clickers in the museum is brilliant.
The woman at the start dropded the cordyceps out of her hand like that because it moved a little bit and scared her. Tess got infected in the Museum fight with the clickers. During when she is looking at Ellies bite in the game she points at the bite on Ellie and says "this is 3 weeks, I was bitten an hour ago and it's already worse". Earlier in the game when questioning Ellie about her bite Tess says "everyone turns within 2 days". I think they may have even shortened the time it takes to turn for the series.
The intro melody is from the game. HBO outdid themselves in the way that they took it over.
Your doggie is so sweet, and I can tell he's so spoiled. Also, the woman doctor didn't get bit. The fungus moved in the tweezers, and it scared her.
That Scientist at the Beginning wasn't infected then (with The Hand). The Fact the Viral Fungus (that causes the infection) was still alive on The Tweezers made her jump. It even amazed me too (when I first watched it), seeing how they (The Fungus) has outlived The Host (the Dead Woman). Which is why she asked if anyone else came in contact with the woman.
When the General said that there were 14 missing people that they couldn't find, I pretty much knew it was too late. Which is why she asked for the bomb. To save the species (humanity).. and asked to go die with her family. She kinda didn't understand that it was already too late by that point.
Also, Ellie is a "Mutant". I'm guessing something in her biology counter-acts the Fungus' Infection.. which is why it stopped. Tess got infected during their fight with the 2 Clickers (Monsters) in The Museum. She only got infected a few hours ago, but her Infection is so bad.. that's what she was trying to show Joel.
Final Thoughts on Ellie. This is a completely Hail Mary assumption.. but I am thinking, Assuming Really. That Ellie's mother might've been infected before she gave Birth to Ellie. Which is why the infection won't work with her.

First episode, they showed the stages of infection. The fungus wants to travel to the host's brain. The closer you get infected, the faster you turn. First episode showed it took at most 24 hours.

The further we get in the series, the worse that last scene with Tess hurts. She tried to get close to Joel and he straight up flinched and backed away. I couldn't imagine how much that would hurt, not even being able to properly touch my sometime lover right before I had to blow myself up. Crazy.

Well it’s scary because she technically could have already turned because of how long it had been. Don’t lie to people. Especially people you say you care for. Your infection and death isn’t your secret to keep.

The fucked up thing about the cordyceps is that they ARE still people, at least for a while. The fungus hijacks their brain and the infected person is just along for the ride.
In the game, you can sometimes hear newly infected ("Runners") crying in pain or because they're eating someone and they don't want to. Messed up

I'm late, but happy birthday sweet, sweet pupper!! I've only watched two of your videos so far, but already your pups are so sweet and so cute.
This is one of the first video game adaptations that's actually been good. The game is SOOO good, highly recommend it since you haven't played it. There are some small differences between the game and the show. For example, in the game, there ARE areas you HAVE to wear a mask cause the infected release spores in some areas. They couldn't use that in the show cause in real life spores are pretty much everywhere. Also, the theme song is from the game itself!

Tess was bitten during the clicker encounter in the museum, the bites take fast and they said earlier no one lasts more than a day.
Tess was once Olivia Dunham. She worked with the FBI/CIA and for fringe division (depending on what universe you happen to be in at that time) so she’s well trained. It’s garbage they killed her off so fast. HBO always rushing through things that need time to breathe

Much of this episode was filmed here in Calgary - the footage you see is a combination of real-life effects with a bit of CGI added.
The sequence where they walk the curved bridge, which takes a minute or two of screen time, took THREE DAYS of shooting on the Fourth Avenue Flyover. Some motorists in Calgary were NOT happy as it's a main artery into downtown :)
The final sequence (and explosion) happen at the Alberta Legislature (equivalent of a US state house) up in Edmonton. The Alberta government was in recess, so the filmmakers could take their time to totally redressethis lovely old building - it was INSANE to see :)

There are dramatic differences between the show and game, but so far the overall story is the same. It's just how you progress the story may be different because hours of gameplay doesn't make great TV, and some type of TV storytelling wouldn't make a great game.
One could view this show as a "variant" in the wide-open multiverse. Where things still largely happen the same, just in different ways. Best part being, if you're a fan of the games, this show enhances it by filling in some of the blanks. If you've never played the games but love the show, you'll LOOOOVE the games :)

Mushrooms are cool. I'm no science whizz, so I might get this a bit mixed up, but I think;
Mushrooms are fungus, more specifically the "fruit" of the fungus. And the tip of the iceberg.
Its "roots" are a network called mycelium. This network of roots is one organism that is many, many times larger than the mushrooms it fruits.
The fungus will grow the mushrooms to release spores in to the air. This sort of reproduces, by allowing a kind of "clone" offspring into the wild, but when it roots, it can join up with it "parent" fungus. This creates gigantic fungus networks that join up root systems, making them effectively one.
(In the show; Spores spread the fungus, all the infected and fungus growths are technically one organism, all connected as one forming a sort of hive mind. As the fungus that spread from the first infected to the latest is a "clone" of the original fungus.)
A fungus will grow a lot of mushrooms giving the illusion that they are individual "plants" each with their own stem, but under the surface they will all be growing from the same mycelium network. (In the show, they explain the infected work the same way; "Disturb one and wake dozens elsewhere.")
The largest record living thing ever is an enormous fungus network spanning around 4 square miles.
Mushrooms are closer to flesh than plant.
When the fungus takes over a host infected person, mushrooms begin forming on/in their skin.
Given enough time, an infected will lose the sense of sight as the eyes are destroyed or "grown over".
This is when an infected becomes a "clicker". Now blind but still a sense of hearing (Big fleshy head can feel vibrations in the air, effectively making it a giant "ear") a clicker will echo-locate. By clicking repeatedly and "listening" to the echoes bounce around, this gives them a sense of spacial awareness. The longer a returning echo, the further away something is. Same way submarines, and some animals, "see".
@JL I assume she was bit when they fought the "clickers" the clicking hissing infected... so figure 30 minutes hour tops? Yea you can turn within 8 to 12 hours usually (in game)

They technically SHOULD have a mask on. In the video games they DO have them when going into places like this. They look like gas masks & you will see a nod to them as the series continues. But probably bc it makes the characters harder to hear when filming with them on & also probably bc you don't want the big leads of your show like Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey spending half the series with their faces covered, they made the decision to do away with spores in the air like the game version & instead chose to go with the tendrils in this version. Thus, this eliminates the need for the gas masks when they go into certain environments & it gives the TV series a different look/feel that separates this show from the video games themselves. That confused me too when initially watching this the first couple times, brother..lol. Hope this helps.. You weren't alone in thinking that, JL... Keep killing it, my guy..❤.
