    Hi all, I was just out for a quick overnight camp in the TENTON sport camp cot and wanted to share my winter camping experience.
    The temperature was mild for this time of year (-10c) which made for a very comfortable nights sleep.
    I really enjoy how quickly I can setup and take down this system, allowing me to spend more time enjoying my surroundings than assembling my camp.

    I've been using my XXL cot for years now, its so comfy. I have the outfitter mattress as well but Im getting tired of setting up a tent for the cot. I think this Quick Tent is the answer: its tropical where I live with some respite in June/July/August when it almost gets down to single digit celsius overnight, but when I head south it goes a few degrees below freezing and rains like hell.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  Год назад

      I'd recommend getting the Elite Fly with the Quick Tent. This option allows the fly to drape all the way to the ground, providing better protection in heavy rain - Check out later videos where I film a complete overview of the setup! 👍

    Michael try putting a layer of Mylar (silver emergency blanket) inside the mattress cover under the foam. It doesn’t breathe enough for summer use but will keep your heat from escaping down in winter. I just bought the tent and I have to order the cot and XXL mattress yet.

    I'm looking forward to trying my new rainfly out (the large one) with my rig like this. Don't know why (when I used it the first time) it hadn't dawned on me to put the mattress INSIDE the tent, instead of between the cot/tent (DUH). I'm also thinking of staking a tarp to the ground on the back side, then using four poles to create an awning up/over, allowing me to stand up (under shelter). Could also alleviate that accumulation of snow in the open door when you want the view/fresh air. And... minimizing WHAT gets soaked in the rain. Amazing how much more sophisticated and yet, SIMPLE our gear gets as we get older and seek more and more convenience while "roughing" it. LOL
    I have the very same "match/lighter". However, the striker rod became dislodged from the side of it and has gone missing. Be careful of that annoyance.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Ahhh very cool - The Elite rainfly is very nice an it does keep a lot of wind and stuff from blowing under the cot. I just dislike the colour 😔 I just bought a new hammock that I hope to be testing next week - so the tent cot will have to wait until after that time - but I miss its simplify and speed for setup! Great gear! Yea - I have one part of the striker come loose and I ended up jamming it back in again. Not built for the long haul but they are interesting!

    I have the cot pad and I love it. The only thing that bugs me is that is absorbs water like a sponge, so if you sweat, beware. I've had the cot for a couple of years and have used it many times. I just purchased the tent and I'm really excited to try it out on a camping trip in a couple of weeks!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  5 лет назад

      Hi Jeff - I like the pad too. I haven't found that it absorbs water but I'm sure it would. Perhaps spraying it with waterproofing for canvas might help. I really like the TETON setup for any time in the season - great all round camping solution!

    What sleeping bag are you using. It looks like a Woods -45C bag. I've been looking at doing some winter camping this year and it seems there are only a few out there and the price is all over the place. I'm in Calgary

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Homeguy 4X4, I bought the bag from Wholesale sports and it was one of their -45c bags and I LOVE it! It's too big for anything apart from car/truck/hunting trip camping but worth the money. I paid about $250 for it on sale and bought 2. TETON Sports sells a -37c bag for about $130 CAD on amazon (TETON Sports Deer Hunter Sleeping Bag) - haven't tried one bit the price looks good. Hope that helps.

      Hi Richard - The lantern was a UCO Candle Lantern with 9 hour candles fitted www.ucogear.com/candle-lanterns/ - You can also get beeswax candles and candles with citronella for summer. Cheap and time tested - love em! Podcasts I listen to mainly are Security Now with Steve Gibson, This Week in Enterprise Tech & Level 1 Techs (for fun).

    Have you ever tried "Wetfire" fire starting cubes? They are fantastic, I discovered them while camping in the Yukon of Canada. The start easly with a ferrocerium rod. I have started wood that had been rained on for many days with these cubes, hence the name "Wetfire"

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад +2

      I have used wetfire and it is awesome - I keep something similar in my emergency firelighting gear especially for the winter months. You don't have time to mess around if you get cold at -30c or -40c. You need fire to stop you getting into a bad spot or worse.

    I love this setup, I currently use the Ozark Trail Instant Tent Cot (which is a copycat of the Oztent Bunker Pro Tent Cot). I have a concern about your set up, mainly being the Teton rain fly doesn’t properly cover the cot, so I have a concern about standing water accumulating between the tent and cot

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  2 года назад

      Hi Joseph - I have only heard good things about the Ozark products 👍 The TETON system can be upgraded to the Elite fly which does cover the whole cot with a small vestibule on the door side. They supply the short fly so you can use on a cot OR as a floor tent 👍

    In the video, you were finished setting up by 5:26, but that looked edited. How long did it actually take you to setup camp? I'm interested in the Teton for that reason. As you are tired of blowing up mattresses, I just don't think I can push a pole through another set of eyelets!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors

      The setup with the TETON is that quick - I can have all my camp setup with a chair, table and open my first beer under 10 minutes easy 😎 Pack up is about the same but you need to roll the sleeping bag. Be aware the TETON quick tent or Vista 1 is not suitable if you are over 6ft tall 👍

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад

      Hi James - You could store some gear inside but like most 1 person tents there isn't a lot of room. You can get a sling from TETON www.tetonsports.com/Accessories/Organizers/under-cot-storage.htm#.V447wJMrKw4 to store gear underneath. I use the tent without the cot sometime too - I really like quick pitch at the price of a little more weight. For the money, you can't beat this little tent!

    I just bought the tent last week in preparation for kayak camping. Now I’ll need to get the cot after watching your video. I’m wondering if the cot will pack small enough to fit into a hold, or need to be strapped to the deck. Man my wife is getting sick of these camping necessities.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад

      Hi Dan, the cot is pretty big - I don't think it will fit in a kayak and it weighs 26lb. However, the tent is great solo and pitches so fast it awesome.

    • @danbolton3180
      @danbolton3180 6 лет назад

      Yes I set it up this morning to re attach the clips. The sales person thought that the tent would last longer if it was taken apart first, but after watching a few videos I am leaving it in fast set up mode! I know that giant pad won’t fit in the boat unless I leave the food and sleeping bag at home. I’ll check the cot out though because river camping in the Northwest can mean soggy ground most of the year. I’m hoping to paddle Portland to Astoria this summer, about 90 miles. Thank you retirement! I have a bivy tent also, but it takes 10 times longer to erect, and is less spacious.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors

      Thanks for the reply Michael. I’ll set the tent up on a ground sheet later this week and give it a try in the back yard. We’ve had a week of rain, so the ground is saturated. A good test. I like that you camp with Esme. It’s good to share with another being at the time. I would camp with my dogs, but 10 and 8 pounds make for wildlife treats more than companionship. It appears that they’re not responding to anybody, (and haven’t for a while). Would you know any Canadian retailers for the bigger rainfly? Or, did you manage to get a direct number? (Their answering machine is full). Kind regards!

    i would cover it more with another tarp if it rained really hard the rain could hit the cot and roll under the tent and get soaked

    Does this tent fit the Universal Cot?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors

      Hi Nate - I believe its designed for the XXL Camp Cot. The Vista 2 double uses 2 x Universal Camp Cots.

    Do you consider this superior to the Kamp Rite cot/tent ?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Rudy, they both have strengths and weaknesses - the Kamp-Rite is the better camp cot but its bulky to transport and store. The TETON is modular so the tent and cot can be used separately, which also means its more transportable. The TETON is also a bigger bed size but the Kamp-Rite provides better headroom overall (weird I know). For what I use it for, the TETON has the edge because it has more uses. Either way they both serve as excellent tent cots and you can't go wrong with either! Hope that helps a little. Best wishes Michael

      Hi Clifford - this tent is designed for the TETON XXL Outfitter Cot and attaches via elasitcated toggles. I think the tent is just $90 CAD on Amazon and is pretty cheap for what you get. You can also use it as a regular ground tent.

    How can you be in such cold weather and your breath never shows in any of your winter videos?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  4 года назад

      When it gets really cold the air doesn't hold much moisture - So the breath is not as visible as when is slightly cold 😉

    Is the tent long enough for someone who is 6’3”?

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  4 года назад

      Hey Terry - The tent is 80"x37"x34" and I'm 5'9" and fit with me and two dogs. I would say 6'3" is getting to the limit and you may brush the tent with your feet of head if fully stretched out but as its a double skin tent that's not a huge problem. I'd recommend buying just the tent from Amazon perhaps and set it up in the living room to see if it fits. If it doesn't return it and get a refund. People do that with cloths all the time! 😄 The cot will absolutely fit you as its BIG 85" x 40" x 19"! Hope that helps!

      Oh my, such Beautiful mountains near you. Banff is by far one of my favorite places on this earth. My wife and I spent an anniversary at Banff Springs Hotel. I have backpacked and camped all through Banff and Jasper parks, and of course, Athabasca Falls!!! I have often thought of moving to that area. Just a wonderful place.

    As much as I don't like seeing litter. I would rather see tin cans, than broken glass. Easier to clean up, and little safer. Besides, empty beer cans is money. Last summer made 40 bucks off of discarded empties around camps and trails. And a tip of the hat to anyone that keeps a clean camp, and cleans up after others.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Brian - I guess it was better than glass but all the same it's disappointing. One thing I've never understood about Alberta and maybe other provinces is that people spend time collecting cans from the roadside or other public places and make a little cash. It's great that they do - don't get me wrong but who is throwing cans out on the highway in enough volume to make it worthwhile for others to collect?! Blows my mind! Thanks for clearing up your area - people like me appreciate it! Best wishes Michael & Esme
